I’ve owned my GL450 for almost 13 years and have almost 250,000 miles on it. I tow 2 boats with it; each one with trailer is over 5000 pounds. This vehicle is a beast and has NEVER let me down. You need to proactively maintain them or they will eat you alive but this kind of vehicle is never cheap. I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off!
Hi Pat , I listened lot of reviews about GLS and Mercedes and most them worried about maintenance. I order new gls450 2023. These car worth to buy it for long time?
@@sobyandrews7217 Mercedes Benz vehicles are worth it in the long run if you keep them for the long run and stay on top of the maintenance. I've owned many through the years and I tend to keep them for at least 8-10 years and do a lot of the maintenance myself once they are off warranty. Frankly, I'd never buy new... they depreciate WAY TOO MUCH. I've always bought CPO (Certified Pre Owned).
@@Mrwinecontreras The M273 engine in the 2007-2012 G450 and G550 is a great engine, but those manufactured before around 2011 have some very expensive issues including head issues (covered under warranty for me) and a gear on the front of the engine that was not covered under warranty... a $5,600 US repair I had to pay. Also, the intake manifold was replace under warranty at around 90k miles. I've had my truck so long that everything has been replaced and it runs beautifully. I wouldn't touch a pre-2011 G450 or 550 unless all the recall works has been done. Mine is a 2007. You want documentation.
I have a GL 450. The suspension failed because of time, but fixing it was not to bad, tail gate also had a problem with the actuator. Got fixed kind of easy. Coolant leak from old hose, also not big deal. By jumping it, the tail gate module broke. Got it fixed. These are the issues I have had, besides this, runs perfect. It comes down to how well you maintain it
My 2008 GL450 runs as smooth as new, has the original engine, 2 sets of front air shocks and one set on rear. It’s still 380,000 miles young. Will reach 400,000 miles by the end of the year and is awesome. Best car I ever bought and I’ve had it 15 years. Stransmission is super smooth and a lot of long distance driving has averages 20.5 mpg. Not bad for a v8. This is a classic, runs forever Mercedes
A few things... You said it's made in Alabama, which is only in part accurate. The engine/transmission are completely made in Germany, so is the suspension, the steering and almost everything. It could be that the chassis is made there and for sure it's put together by the fine people of Alabama. I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm originally from Stuttgart and I live here in the US. I only drive MB. I had the ML430 up until I got this GL450 in 2008. It's black on black and today we look at 190250miles. ZERO problems! Secret? Do the maintenance by the book; don't be cheap on consumables and don't treat it like you stole it; it will love you back. Had transmission fluid replaced the third time in it's life two days ago and the MB technician said he's like in a time capsule in my car. There is a very big difference between those units which have been leased and returned; those most of the time are used like they stole it... Next; those who get a pre-owned one and don't have the means to do high class maintenance will see it degrade in front of their eyes, but this is valid for every luxury vehicle. I'm only installing Michelin tires and more specifically, those with the lowest life expectancy; those handle the best, superb actually. It's a darling of a car if you do everything by the book. Cheers mate! P.S. Regarding the drop in value... It's rather a drop in price and it's based on more than one factor. The unit you are presenting is a pile of crap; just think about it how the car can't scratch itself... The loose knobs got loose because a tractor operator owned it. A real Mercedes owner would never allow his car to feel like that. It most have changed multiple times the owner and for that reason, yes, it dropped value. A good one with a solid history will sell for a decent amount and one which needs attention, will sell for less. In my case, after 190k miles, all I have to say, it served me well and 14 years later I could not care less how much someone would pay for it; it's not for sale. We have other cars which are renewed every 3-5 years, but not this one. BTW; your mechanic... Nothing... Suspension is a very easy job; you don't even need specialty tools; no springs to compress. A kit will last 60k miles for sure, but it could give you over 100k miles. I did the job myself recently (Bilstein Made in Germany) front + rear including air springs $1200 all together. Yes I replaced a thermostat for $50 genuine and it's a15 min job; done at 180k miles...
@@tedlu008 You say "some"... No apparatus is 100% fail-free across the entire production. Can happen to anyone at any given point in time. In any case it never happened to me, if that matters. I'd stay with facts and my fact is as described. Cheers!
We picked up a 2011 GL450 with 60k miles back in 2017. Almost 8 years later at 170K miles, I am shocked how easy it is to wrench on. If you have basic mechanic skills you can get a super capable car for not much money. On my own, I have replaced the air ride units on all 4 corners, including the compressor, control valve, rear shocks, oil cooler gasket, transfer case chain, ac compressor, condenser, drier, expansion valve, drive belts, idler pully, brakes and rotors, and of course the oil. We religiously change the oil and the valve train is immaculate.
Great video and some amusing social stereotyping! I have owned a 2009 Gl350 cdi for 3 years now. As a family of 5 with three teenage boys this car works🤜 (and works hard) We have a heavy enough boat and take it on holiday full of gear and the adventures we have help justify the maintenance cost. We do like the luxury combo with off-road ability. Yes old European cars don’t age well. I purchased the car knowing it will likely have a fair few issues and it has. I have kept cost down by sourcing parts and having a mobile mechanic who is ex Mercedes. If I bought my parts from Merc and paid their labour cost I would not feel value at all, but I don’t. I have owned GL 450 for over 8 years now, its have been an amazing, reliable and 5 star experience till date. Few years ago there were minor issues in air-suspension, this vehicle needs premium tires for sure due to its size, apart from these 2 things everything else has been superlative! Ofcourse, you cannot be a penny-pincher and decide to drive a MERCEDES :)
Air suspension eventually breaks in all equipped cars from yukon denalis to jaguar etc.mercedes is nobdifferent.fortunately air ride shocks could be replaced much cheaper with regular suspension or aftermarket.
Bought my 2012 GL550 about 18 months ago with 100k miles. Vehicle looks almost new. Put about 10k miles on it in that time, hauled a 6x12,' trailer with 1200 lbs in it like there was nothing being towed. Gas mileage is decent on the highway. I love this car except the following complaints. washer nozzles front and rear leak, so the rear one leaks into the cabin. Also, it eats tires, but i found a post online blaming "sport mode" so I'll see if leaving it in comfort mode makes a difference. 21" wheels doesn't offer a lot of options for tires. Finally, some of the plastic parts are cheap and are not holding up. All that said, I absolutely love this vehicle. Not as much as I loved my 2000 Landcruiser, but still, love it.
I owned one for a few years, drove all over the east coast with it, off road and towing. It was a breeze on the beach, effortless through rutted trails around Lithgow beyond what people would expect to find one of these but it handled it all easily with only A/T tyres being added It was brilliant, comfortable, efficient and reliable. The air suspension is their bugbear, but cleaning them regularly did help increase the longevity. Interior quality is robust, I think the interior has the good balance of soft touch, good ergonomics and comforts whilst being robust enough to not break apart. Overall, I think you like many others have said went in too hard. You don't seem to know what angle to review the car as A luxurious SUV, or a hard-wearing 4x4. It's a bit of both, and it does that well.
@@MrR4ge89 do you know the difference between a robust interior and a specific used vehicle with an interior defect or we just going to assume this one used car reflects the 250 odd thousand they produced?
@@MrR4ge89 Ahahahhh... I am not sure he was honest... For me, not really want any Benz. Any BMW, any Range Rover in my driveway. Only Lexus and Toyota for years now. And peace of mind.
It's like any product or service that exists: Whenever you look for issues, you'll find plenty of people to complain but it fails to account for the countless other people that aren't having problems. The other thing too is that you cannot lump every owners experience, or car condition, just based on that particular vehicle. Chalk me up as another owner, mine is about to pass 200k miles, I've owned it since 100k. I've replaced the battery, the air compressor one time, a thermostat, and a transfer case timing chain. I've towed a 7,000 pound travel trailer a hundred miles with zero issues, and have none of the creaks and groans that the vehicle in the video is being used to demonstrate. And nitpicking on interior button quality on a nearly-15 year old car and forgetting what time period you're comparing it from is silly. At the end of the day, it comes down to maintenance and a little bit of luck, especially with anything with higher miles. Any that have exceeded the original warranty become a crap-shoot. Original owners trade them in when the warranty will cover nothing more, and new owners generally aren't going to spend the money on repairs out of warranty and often times just let the vehicles degrade over time. Find examples with proper maintenance, don't shoehorn yourself into only paying a dealer for high labor rates and excessive OEM-only part cost (there are great aftermarket options for things like the air suspension, for example) and there's no reason to not take a look at them if you're interested. Oh, and ironic to complain about the size of the car while driving around, passing other cars parked on the street that are the same size or even larger.
I have 145k on my 2012 GL550. I bought it with 110k on it from an MB dealer where it was bought new and was serviced. So far I replaced the rear airbags at 115k and then fuel pump at 138k. It now needs front bags as they have developed a leak. I do go over the top on changing oil (5k), transmission (15k) and differential (20k) changes due to it being used for 4000lbs+ towing regularly. I am planning to rebuild full front suspension of while replacing the front struts. I am planning to drive it to 200k before replacing it. It won't be easy to replace.
I purchased the 2008 MB GL 320 cdi diesel in 2014 (2008 sticker price $66,000.00). Looked brand new then and now, 8 yrs. later still looks new. Yes, a hail dent on the carriage top, one small fender scrap (from someone in a parking lot)! Gets better fuel mileage than the sticker states (18-24), I average 20- 25 and long vacation driving 28-30 cruising! I have all the upkeeps done on schedule. This car is a Dream to drive! Comfy, small turn radius and it loves to cruise! It is the Capri Deep Blue exterior and the interior is tan leather with woodgrain. My version has the extra luxury features and they are nice!
Have bought one a 2011 gl500. Early days but sofar so good, prior owner replaced air suspension 2 yrs ago, lasted 100000kms from new. Will be expensive if something seriously goes wrong but saying that its $40k less than a landcruiser and even these when they go wrong will cost a fortune to fix. Reports indicate the 2009 onwards models the best pick
Hi Michael, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I don't feel I went in hard, we approached this car in the same manner that we approach everything we review. It just failed to live up to it's manufacturers image. Also, it had a full and thorough service history although, after we filmed this last year, this GL managed to get worse. The electronic issues became more frequent and the air suspension eventually failed. - AK
What does your rear sunroof look like? I live in California USA and mine is hazy/ crackled and I can’t see out of it- absolutely no visibility. I’m trying to think of a way to refinish it... any ideas?
I would like you to tell me your experience with this car. I'm thinking about getting a gl500 and I don't have information about maintenance, durability. thank you very much for your understanding.
Great video, offering a realistic, sober analysis of the potential pitfalls of GL ownership. I would only add that this thing corners well for a large SUV, despite how much the tires get punished. I have owned two. I bought a 2008 GL550 and we loved it so much we bought a second 550. The first one was totaled in 2017 because of an electrical problem caused by mysterious water damage. We received insurance money equal to the value of the car. It was a shame, because that car gave me almost zero problems during the 5 years we owned it after buying it in 2012 with 50K miles. We did have an extended warranty that paid for a steering rack that would have been $4K, but otherwise the only repairs over 5 years were a couple new struts for the air suspension. I think the water damage thing was a fluke. We still have the other 2008 GL550 that we got in 2013 with 30K miles. About 10 years on, it now has 123K and has continued to be a great car. We had to replace the steering fluid pump, the starter, the AC compressor, and the battery (twice). I think we had only one wheel go bad on the air suspension, which I learned can be easily fixed by an independent mechanic for half the price of a dealership quote. We are currently contemplating a sale of the 2008 (before something major goes wrong) and a purchase of either a GL450 from 2013-2016, or a GLS450 from 2017. I really don't want to sell, as the car looks fantastic and still drives like new. Just worried about potential catastrophic repairs that could happen at any moment, and we are no longer protected by any kind of warranty. We bought a used 2011 Infiniti QX56 for our other SUV, and it has been outstanding car (170K and going strong), with many more features than the GL550, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. However, my wife hates how the Infiniti drives compared to her GL550. The only thing I would say about the GL interior is how absolutely lousy the quality of the window control buttons are--definitely not consistent with a $80K+ MSRP. I actually broke the cheap plastic pieces off of the rear window controls on the driver door when I applied too much pressure when I quickly tried to lower the windows. Mercedes said it was something like $600 to replace the stupid little plastic pieces so I said NFW to that and just (kind of) snapped the broken ones back into place on the driver door. Now the back windows can only be controlled from the rear doors. Anyway, I would sum up my ownership experience by saying it has been good overall, but just be aware of the potential maintenance costs and try to get an extended warranty if you can still find one. If anyone has advice on whether we should get the newer body style of GL450 (2013-2016) or pay extra for a 2017 GLS450, please let me know. Thanks.
My uncle had one of these (US 2010 Spec GL 550) and while it was great at hauling his and my immediate family around, it did suffer from the occasional air suspension fault, headlight/taillight failure, and random creaks and rattles. He still has it now, but it's on steel springs. I'll never forget the road trip to Chicago where it decided to throw a suspension fault 3 times and each time go right back to normal after it had been turned off and then turned back on.
The best version of this car comes with a 5.5 litre V8. The diesel is great for fuel mileage, but once the emissions start failing all that money you saved on fuel goes right back into the motor for repairs. I have a 2011 GL550 that I bought with 60,000 miles. The air suspension issues are par for the course on any Mercedes with that feature. Considering the car is billed as the S class of SUV's it falls a bit short in the quality and workmanship department. An S class has metal buttons and switches throughout the cabin. The GL doesn't. Mine has door lock/handle gremlins. My driver-side front and rear door handle work intermittingly. My passenger side door has to be locked and unlocked manually. My rear hatch works most of the time and has a mind of its own. The Bluetooth for the telephone will just drop out for 20 to 30 seconds at a time. The netting behind the front seats is trash. The kids will ruin them by stretching them out or if you have a kid in a car seat their feet will be rubbing up against the netting. They will look terrible. Mine don't look great. Why Mercedes put nets there is beyond me. My guess is they wanted something to look utliitarian. They should put a leather-bound pouch-like they do on their other carts. The GL is an absolute BEAST off-road. It can handle trails and mud holes with the best of them. Some GL's come with the off-road package that has the locking diffs. Those are unicorns and should be held on to like gold. One thing I learned from having an S class and a GL class with the same engine and transmission set up is that the belt tensioner and idle pulleys are service items that should be changed every 65,000 miles. Mercedes recommends a transmission service every 39,000 miles and they mean it. Oil changes vary depending on driving conditions and should be between 5000 to 7500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Keep up with the scheduled maintenance and you should be fine. If you make it to 100,000 miles do that service and you should be good for another 100,000 miles. Having said all that, these are not the worst cars out there. They defiantly have their issues, but the ride and comfort make up for a large part of their shortcomings. These trucks eat up miles on a long drive with power, comfort, and a quiet cabin with a beautiful 12 speaker system. Some GL's come with Distronic and all you have to do is set the system and be a steering wheel holder. If you prefer a more sporty ride set the suspension to Sport and enjoy throwing the truck into the corners while utilizing the steering wheel paddle shifters to amp up the excitement. The GL can also tow 7500 pounds, which is on par with SUV's like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 7.5. If you want a 10 get yourself a Toyota 4Runner. I had two, and they were fantastic. Virtually maintenance-free. Oil and brakes, that's it. One of the biggest regrets I have is trading in my 2005 4runner limited edition with the V8 for a new 4runner. I should have kept it. The MB GL 550 is the closest thing I have had since that 4runner in relation to power, towing ability, and off-road capabilities.
Agree, I get 13.4l per 100km, I'm on my 3rd one, all v8s , I have 3 friends who bought 2nd hand on my recommendation and love them, as well as 4 mates who bought cayenne instead and whilst on par off road, on road they can't get under 20l per 100 on the daily commute. I've dragged camper trailers up beaches, over sand dunes and gone everywhere the same year landcruiser will go, except on 21 inch wheels! Really are a great all rounder and very capable 4wd with only the rear departure angle a bit low. They also tow like a boss and I've done Brisbane melb in a day a few times and it's easy.
Really tough to take the mechanic seriously when he criticises the V6 diesel. It’s well documented that mercedes make some of the best diesel engines in the world and this OM642 has been placed in millions of cars, vans, trucks and ambulances and have a remarkable reputation. But wait, his brother had one 😅😅😅
I bought my GL320 in 2018. Other than a new set of tyres, all I've paid out for is a compete flush and change of fluids once and the obvious regular servicing that I've always done myself at fairly low cost but always used top quality fluids and oil etc. Fantastic and reliable care.
Not a fair review. Safety is spectacular. Its a proper 4wd, with low range as well as centre and rear diff locks, bash plates etc.. you do feel like a king driving one.. I had an ML320CDi for 8 years with min problems.. asolid and quality
Now 164k.Everyting works, Loads of room in the 3 rows of seats. Replaced front air shocks, repainted left rear fender (clearcoat was coming off). Looks great, pleasure to drive. I use liqui-moly in the engine coolant and oil (just me). Highly recommend Michelin tires. 5:15 - "The chances of a GL class owner actually going off road is pretty small". True, but great in bad weather, snow, or towing.
I have owned my 2016 GL450 with tow package and other luxury/safety options since 2020. I bought it used for $22k at 83k miles and it was still looking mint in its iriduim silver. It was dealer maintained to the book with log. I was initially scared of the high mileage but it sounded and ran like new during my test drives. I travel a lot for my job and today have 110k on it. I only have replaced the OEM Pirelli tires with same and did three oil changes @10k miles. I call it my kick&go vehicle. Maintenance checks show that everything is still top shape. My Mercedes 2016 GL450 ( and most others) is built strong with no corners cut. It is a luxury vehicle and expensive too because German engineers know and assure quality in performance and durabilty. Has anyone gone under a raised benz truck and saw the quality alloy frame materials used? There is practically no cheap painted steel that will rust easily. My 6-yr old truck is as fresh underneath as it can be, not even a single rusty screw from years of Chicago snow salt. I had used three Ford Explorers from 2000/2006/2015 models and could compare. Within the same time period my wife used Mercedes C240/C300/E300 and while I struggled with everything like radiators, calipers, harmonic dampers, hubs, evaporatives etc at about 80k mileage she never replaced anything at 100k or more before trading in. That made me decide to change and go with benz with a solid heavy build for travelling. Eventually things will break but when. If you are careless/carefree and used to trashing stuff don't go near an expensive luxury vehicle unless you can afford the cash flow. If you use your benz vehicle normally with care it will serve you for many many years with good return value. If you want to go for a used benz make sure you check it out well with warranties. It is easy for a bottom feeder to jump on a $5000 GL450 that was badly maintained only to find out later all the cost and trouble involved. That has nothing to do with the quality of the make but all about the vehicle owner. Some "youtube" mechanics get ratings trashing luxury vehicles, and that is understandable since trashing cheaper ones will hardly be worth reading. If you are jack-of-all vehicles and master of none there is a tendency to be equipped with general repair tools and not invest in the special tools required for a benz. A level of frustration sets in when you could not use your general tools to work on a benz and the trashing starts. Have you seen a benz dealership trashing a benz? A mercedes benz truck is not a cheap vehicle. You buy it for its utility value. If you need it, you buy it. If you can buy it but can't maintain it then you bought something you don't need. You bought something beyond your means.
This is a great review. I was heavily discouraged from purchasing my 2011 GL450 because “Mercedes’ is expensive to maintain”. After a year of ownership I say if you are a seasoned car owner yes go for a Benz. Only individuals who have years of experience owning and maintaining a vehicle would enjoy a Benz. I love mine, my secondary air pump is going but she drives and looks like a dream.
With the recent "Stop Driving" order due to the brake booster recall, these now have a negative value. I looked at one of these on a used car lot two years ago. They were asking $10,000.00 USD and the car needed $12,000 of work to be drivable. Since I own one, I can spot the needed repairs in a minute. Air spring failure, intake manifold bell crank, failing steering gear, broken rear hatch ...
I'm a sucker for that interior combination. Wood trim is always a favourite of mine, especially that rich dark brown. This car has a very "Russian mobster" demeaner to it. Looks like there would be a few variants of the Kalashnikov rifle laying around the space.
My 2014 GL W166 Bluetec was perfect an at 30+ mpg the cost of operation was very good. Loved the massaging seats and air suspension. At 180K miles was like new. If this is a W164, it was no where near as reliable.
When you add up the future cost of maintenance, the present value of these is negative. That’s why the happiest day of my motoring life was trading for a Mazda. I feel I got paid to do the trade.
These are more than ten years old, so should have some battle scars. I’ve known someone swear by these cars for their reliability. He’s fastidious about servicing it as at when due.
I have A 2011 Gl350cdi with 330000km on the clock . bought 2nd hand @ 210k on the clock. Replaced rear air spring when i got it ,Replaced water pump @280k .tailgate lock stopped working @320k , back row seat stopped working @ 320k .Air- suspension just started acting up recently. I would rather repair all these than purchase another car. For the ride quality , features and safety you get in these cars it's definitely worth it. what would you get for the same price.
This review needs to be acknowledged in a certain way, people who buy this car usually have a lot of money. They say more money more problems. If you want a reliable car buy a Dacia
Just got a 2010. Depreciation is not an issue. After owning an ml320, I assumed the common issues . They have often always been related to cosmetic or electric. Regular maintenance makes sense. My biggest concern is what I might have to take apart to repair myself. Even then I found repairing was just a matter of the right tools but it was easier to replace parts than some other cars I had. Once you get to the part the tools seem to be very calculated for ease of removal and replacement. I bought it at 166k miles. Biggest concern I have is timing chains life, what I see is common issue with suspension ( as suspected given the ml320 signaled the what became an issue that made it un-driveable. I work from home so if I get ahead of issues I only got it at the price I paid and mileage because the last ml class I owned gave me 7 years with only replacing the alternator.. battery, and of course due to suspension or drive line issues tired were balding more than normal
The example you tested is a real shitheap unfortunately . It’s been really abused. I have an ML35O and a lot of the bits are the same and it’s done 180000 and it’s like new. I’ve had to replace the rear shocks and airbags and that was a surprisingly cheap job. I tow 3T with it regularly too.
Ok Just the "Facts " a few complains are Normal for any car manufacturer, from 2006 - 2018 ( 370,000 MB SUV's Sold ), by all means the Mercedes GL has been a Success ,in many categories, We... (the Happy Owners Don't Make Videos ) about how happy we are with our Mercedes Benz GL's
All I know is that these are a POS in terms of reliability, I know this as my mum has a 2011 ML 350 CDI which is obviously the car that the GL is based on I should also mention the issues with our ML that we’ve had: The ignition key barrel failed which stranded us as it wouldn’t start, the car would randomly go into anti-theft mode (both of those happened when the car was only 4 years old), the air suspension compressor failed, the fuel pump failed (although that was the result of being broken by a mechanic) and last but not least, the car ate through 2 serpentine belts in a 6 month period due to a massive oil leak Lastly, I should mention that it only has about 130,000 kms on it lol
Just get a Toyota Kluger or Mazda CX-9 to replace it if your mum wants a large SUV. Go for the Grande/Akera luxury grades. Should give you the luxury you want with some actual reliability. Lexus RX is an option too.
@@User-cb4jm too be fair we’ve owned it since new so they got their moneys worth out of it and we don’t know when we’re going to get rid of it but probably not for another year or two. We’ve considered the Vw Tiguan and Touareg, BMW X3 and X5 (we had a 2004 X5 before the merc), Mazda CX-5 and maybe the Lexus NX (all current model but likely used with low kms) Other than those problems listed in my OC the car has been fine.
@@HughRussell06 Sorry but I just can’t help but laugh at that statement. My friend says a similar thing about their family’s Holdens “only” having a few major issues in the time they’ve owned them. That is a very low bar, we’ve owned a new car for as old as 14 years, with absolutely nothing to be spent on it past routine wear and tear components (wipers, batteries, tyres, etc). We pretty much only buy Toyotas or Mazdas, the 14yo car in question was a Mitsubishi. Don’t bother with VW, unless you want a car with an even worse reliability record. Seriously though, own a Toyota or Lexus and your perceptions over what is reasonable will change. You start to expect that you can go decades without issues and for the amount of money you pay for a car, with the manufacturing technology we have today, I would expect no less, but it still feels like there are cars that have issues but logically shouldn’t in this day and age, especially “luxury” cars. Given the fact most of the “luxury” sits in the option$ list, what luxury am I paying for, the luxury to take it to the dealer when some electronic component cacks itself?
theres a 08 gl550 for sale near me w 103k miles on it in immaculate condition for 5000us. while apparently they have some problems its a really good looing suv. i really like it having almost 400hp and 400tq as well. im debating whether i should go look at it and risk the biscuit lol. i can fix any and everything myself so im not worried about labor costs. i am worried about parts cost. my biggest worry would be the air suspension. i do know though you can swap out the air struts for standard struts. which if they went bad thats most likely what i would do. just eliminate it all together. again damn good looking vehicle w the 21" amg wheels on them. walmart just totaled my jeep because they installed the battery backwards and left it hooked up for 30 seconds. needless to say it melted all wiring and took out the pcm, alternator, tipm aka fuse box, complete wiring harness that goes from fuse box to starter, and some module. sad thing is i was going to install the battery myself but figured i could run in and grab what i needed quickly and leave in 10 min. i thought it wasnt possible to mess up a battery install. boy was i wrong, morons never cease to amaze me. they did however fire the guy who totaled my jeep. currently waiting for a check as we speak.
my 07 was 85k brand new. it has 116k miles on it, and it is only worth 5k. i'll tell you what though, for the 8700 i got it for, it was worth it. i do agree though, that whoever bought it brand new for 85k definitely didn't get something as nice as they should have gotten for the money. it does NOT feel as premium as it should for that money, i couldn't agree more. for the 9k i paid for mine, however, i can't complain at all thing is mint
Can you guys do a review of the 2016/2017 GLS350D model? I would assume that comparing a mid 2000's model to a mid 2010's next generation model that all these problems would have been resolved by now.
Now I wouldn't buy one of these, but I do feel you are a little hard on this GL-Class 450. You do carry on about on how much it has dropped over the years, but isn't this good for the secondhand buyer. Forget the Landcruiser, the prices are just a scam, are they really that good eg a 2012 GXL with 206k on the clock for $85k plus on roads is stupid, would you pay that. You really can't really compare price drops with the landcruiser and by the way LC spare part prices can be over the top to. In a lot of cases having big price drops on some makes and models is good for the secondhand car buyer and also it could just be that the new price was the problem, way over the top.
Problem is the servicing cost doesn’t change because it’s depreciated so hard. I’d hazard that not many would have deep enough pockets to keep them on road once warranty is out.
Argh. The only annoying thing is the criticism of the front cup holder. The centre can pull out intentionally and then it reveals a couple of tabs you can pull the whole cupholder out with so you can clean it in the sink. Sorry, but that’s frikin awesome.
I like this Merc mister but running one could well Be a problem because if it breaks you'd better have deep pockets. No, if I wanted a Merc it'd have to be the old Military style G Wagon but I'd more likely go after the Landcruiser!
Buddy bought one brand new drove for 2 years and transmission went out another issue I have with Benz is a family member owned a dealership and said the rear end seems to be engineered to fail around 130k miles. Crash test ratings for getting hit from behind by a vehicle going around 30mph. Is pretty damn scary.
New design, new twin-turbo v8 that has its own issues if not maintained. Same diesel emissions issues But, that is industry-wide and not just limited to Mercedes-Benz. Similar suspension issues. Better quality interior.
I have the 4L, V8 CDI diesel version and it's a 2011. I purchased it for the towing and i like luxury, I like quiet. I do most of the repairs and maintenance myself, so no biggie for me, but things do wear out or stop working. When I upgrade, I probably will go for another Mercedes, but I can also see myself in a full electric car, like a Tesla or maybe a right hand drive cybertruck when they come to NZ.
Back in the day one of my colleagues bought one of these things new. Let's just say she looked over her head trying to maneuver this thing in a parking lot. Previously they had purchased an E65 7 series. That piece of junk was lemon lawed.
Great Episode guys. It is very pleasing to watch a local channel that provides insights about older cars. I can especially relate to this one because I made a mistake of buying a 2006 Gl500 back in 2014. Was luxurious on the interior however mechanically was just a Lemon. As Jim talks about the potential issues with this car, I am sitting here nodding along, transmission problems - a big yes, suspension imbalance - yes, loose driveshaft - yes! Would have made a more rational decision only if It watched videos like this back in 2014. Really hope, any one watching your content doesn’t make a similar blunder!
I had a porsche s cayenne and gl550 porsche was faster but mercedes look better ! Mercedes is a great car or suv its awd just keep up the oil changes and the airpump for suspension and you will be ok also they make springs and stuts do delete the airbags but anyhow its nice all the motors and parts are the same gl is top suv and s class is top

Its a good used vehicle to buy if the previous owner took care of it. Paying for some repairs is better then having new car payments every month.
I owned a GL 320cdi for 10 years. I can't think of any other car that would allow me to do so many things so well. It did have a few failures (gearbox being the min one) but it aged really well and was still looking like new when I let it go. I now have a 2015 GL 500 (V8 435hp) which is amazing.
I bought a 2008 with 53k miles for $6000. 1 owner Clean full dealer service. Already spent $4800 with maintenance Tanny fluid, Transfer case and Differential fluid changes and CV Axel repair at dealership. Its drives like a dream though. Im in almost 11k.
I work at a wrecking in southern California, a 2008 glk450 with 133k came in and i bought it for $1700. the front carrier assembly needs to be placed its $200 for a used one, the labor will cost me $300 from a mobile mechanic. wish me luck
When I first saw the GL models from 2006-2012 on pictures I didn't like them very much, I went to see them live and I completely changed my mind too beautiful the design is real monstrous.🤩
After living in Sydney for a number of years the only people I saw driving these were badge pretentious foreigners that were obsessed with designer labels and caught up with the bigger the better
Wonderful car. i ve got a 2009 w211 e420 cdi diesel. It is a beast. Total comfort. Rediculous pulling power for a diesel and stil 8 liters to a 100 km when i seriously use it. Love the facelift look
The budget version of this car would be the Kia Sportage(before 2010 model years). Exterior looks like the Gl went on a little diet, and the interior is not filled with high tech stuff, but it is very comfortable and has much room on both the front and back seats. The 2.0l diesel model with 83 hp is the one I own and from what I have heard my mechanic says its the most reliable one out of the 3 engine configurations that are available in Europe. I get about 7 to 8 litres per 100km, and the car overall is just great to drive
@@ReDriven could you also do a review of either the e90 or f30 3 series? If e90, specifically one with the N52 engine (323, 325 and 330i) or if f30, the 320 or 328i
I've heard it from my friend that ML series he bought was a shame for Merc, so now he is a bit skeptical for another suv from merc. I, being a poor guy can swear my life on my lexus rx 350 2012. Now i can show him this expert review too
Love your vids dude....looking at getting a ford Endura and doing my research into them. Came across a video of you doing review with your missus on the Ford. Any chance you could do a review on it. Would be interested to do the comparison of your view today.

I wish I would’ve seen this before I bought mine. A month and a half ago I bought a 2012 GL550. Mainly because I just needed something that was a little bit larger than what I had. It seemed like a decent deal. It does look like it was kept in a show room inside and out. And it was only a one owner vehicle. So I’m hoping that I’ve ended up with one that won’t give me a lot of problems. Because I am definitely not in a position to pay thousands of dollars for repairs on some of these items that you have listed in this video. 😵💫😵💫😵💫. So fingers crossed…🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 lol Awesome video I will definitely be watching others.
@james malin I’m going to live in ignorance and bless for now. lol. Maybe get one of those after market insurance plans to help pay for things if they break down. Hopefully if you do get yours it will work out okay.
I own a gl 320 CDI and seen I live somewhere that has a lot of off-road it is pretty good off road it has been abandoned for almost 10 years it has some problems but it is till going strong it doesn't get stuck in sand easily and I love the gl
Thanks for scaring away people who don't know any better. Us who know how amazing these trucks actually are when maintained, will buy them up at a discount because of it :D
Does anybody know if these rear sunroofs can be refinished? They’re not exactly glass and get spiderwebbed and hazy to where you absolutely can’t see out anymore.... Maybe refinished like a headlight I’m thinking? Helpppp :)
Having worked for a Mercedes dealer sort of recently, these along with the majority of the mid-late-00s Mercedes vehicles were absolute garbage. Built like crap, unreliable, and COMAND was just pure arse.
My father owns possibly the lowest driven km GL. It is a 2010 350 CDI Blue efficiency Luxury model in Australia. The car has done just under 45000 km. My father custom ordered the car brand new back in 2009 from Hunter Star motors located in New Castle. Being a medical professional my father could maintain and afford it brand new. Over the years it became his favourite road trip tourer over his daily driver a 2012 Australian made Toyota Camry SL. I will try to summarise with all issues he had so far with his GL 350 cdi. This particular GL is actually a V6 diesel version. In the last 12 yrs of owning not even ONCE the Big SUV was driven off road. Like I said his daily driver to his work and local shop was his Camry. In 2013, few months after 3 Yr warranty period expired, he had to replace the left rear led lights as few of the globes were blown. Mercedes insisted to replace the entire unit for around $800! In 2015 on a road trip the car was stalled due to a "Differential Lock system overheated" message flashing on the dashboard. The car had to towed to Sydney Parramatta Mercedes dealer where they informed us that it is an electronic sensor issue and an electronic chip needs to replaced. The chip arrived from USA in around four weeks where the car was sitting at the service centre for the entire time. It costed about $2700 to replace the sensor chip! Last year the car's air conditioning system broke down during summer! The car was no longer blowing cold air. It costed $1500 to replace the compressor! These were the major problems! And now to the minors. The car sometimes locks you out or it dosnt want to lock. The cheap feel plastic handbrake (it has a foot operated parking brake) lever broke twice! The wheel nuts are rusting. Mind you the car is almost 12 years old but it is still a pleasing looking big SUV which still receives compliments after a good hand wash thanks to its Ceramic Obsidian Black color and custom ordered color coded interior! From my observations and my father's experience, do NOT BUY THE GL! THESE ARE OVER 10 YEARS OLD NOW. VERY EXPENSIVE TO SERVICE AND MAINTAIN AND PARTS ARE BECOMING MUCH HARDER TO SOURCE! These are nothing but, time ticking bombs! You never know what is going to break down next 😢
You tell the Truth I own a Merk another bag of bolts , e280 Cdi 200 km goes like a rocket I’m a fan of the V6 CDI But I’m not precious,it’s a work horse not a toy Great video
I love hearing this. Love these cars and hope to buy one.
That’s the 450 , I’m hearing horror stories on the 550, I’m looking into buying one 08 550 with 170k miles for $6k but I don’t know what to do
@@Mrwinecontreras The M273 engine in the 2007-2012 G450 and G550 is a great engine, but those manufactured before around 2011 have some very expensive issues including head issues (covered under warranty for me) and a gear on the front of the engine that was not covered under warranty... a $5,600 US repair I had to pay.
It comes down to how well you maintain it
You sound like a guy that gets cheated on repeatedly by a girl and you keep making excuses for her. 😊
Actually the new name is the GLS not GL-Class
So a much lighter C300, with a simpler I4 engine, would be very reliable, then.
That is an excellent price for suspension. Where did you buy the parts?
Thats a great price for the set of air suspension parts. What is your store source?
Thanks for the input. Some may see transmission conductor plate replacement at 50k miles. Ac compressor at 90k miles.
@@tedlu008 You say "some"... No apparatus is 100% fail-free across the entire production. Can happen to anyone at any given point in time. In any case it never happened to me, if that matters. I'd stay with facts and my fact is as described. Cheers!
Hey, do you live in california
I keep a record of work I do and thought it is worth sharing some facts.

I have owned GL 450 for over 8 years now, its have been an amazing, reliable and 5 star experience till date. Few years ago there were minor issues in air-suspension, this vehicle needs premium tires for sure due to its size, apart from these 2 things everything else has been superlative! Ofcourse, you cannot be a penny-pincher and decide to drive a MERCEDES :)
i keep a can of "filth be gone" in the car--
Air suspension eventually breaks in all equipped cars from yukon denalis to jaguar etc.mercedes is nobdifferent.fortunately air ride shocks could be replaced much cheaper with regular suspension or aftermarket.
It was a breeze on the beach, effortless through rutted trails around Lithgow beyond what people would expect to find one of these but it handled it all easily with only A/T tyres being added
It was brilliant, comfortable, efficient and reliable.
You don't seem to know what angle to review the car as
A luxurious SUV, or a hard-wearing 4x4.
It's a bit of both, and it does that well.
Robust interior that doesn't break apart? The interior of that GL was LITERALLY falling apart on video.
Is the GL550 BETTER OR LARGER THAN THE GL450?
@@rhoodj larger no.
This guy went in hard on this car. I have one and I swear it gives no problems. Regular maintenance is all it needs. To me it's a amazing SUV..
I agree - use a good independent Mercedes workshop and keep the maintenance up and they are good vehicles to own
Hi Michael, thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@discoverycar I'm driving it still... no issues with it mechanically. Still one of the most solid cars I have ever had....
Love mine. 280,000 kms and still beautiful.
I have GL 320 CDI 4MATIC he is so GOOD!!!!! And in it I put Android 10 TV.
Thanks.
Those Alabama trash cans run for 300k miles and still pas inspection in California i am smog tech and mechanic and those ml are built like a tank
I had one, trouble from 1st service till I sold it, the air suspensions are a nightmare.
Why not just get reliable coil springs/struts? I’m reading of owners ditching the air suspension
You know it’s going to get rough when AK says “…to keep things as objective as possible…”
2012 GL550 resonator and muffler delete with an x-pipe. My shit rocks. I shit on everyone. King of the Road. Get one.
Bought a used one last year, replaced airmatic suspension…drives nice 535000km now
Not a fair review. Safety is spectacular. Its a proper 4wd, with low range as well as centre and rear diff locks, bash plates etc.. you do feel like a king driving one.. I had an ML320CDi for 8 years with min problems.. asolid and quality
Loved the descriptions of the families buying these new ! And should you buy one ? No, just no, run away, and run quickly....
I love mine, my secondary air pump is going but she drives and looks like a dream.
that one you guys have in the video is looking nice man whoever detailed that thing deserves a medal
Looks like there would be a few variants of the Kalashnikov rifle laying around the space.
peristrioka !
“Towing your investment portfolio” LOL…😂😂😂
My 2014 GL W166 Bluetec was perfect an at 30+ mpg the cost of operation was very good. Loved the massaging seats and air suspension. At 180K miles was like new. If this is a W164, it was no where near as reliable.
Please cover the Alphard/Vellfire if you do have them over there. It's a vehicle segment seldom broken down by the pros.
When you add up the future cost of maintenance, the present value of these is negative. That’s why the happiest day of my motoring life was trading for a Mazda. I feel I got paid to do the trade.
A mazda was the happiest day of your motoring life? I feel sad for you.
😂 funny
😂😂😂😂 that’s sad
All I know is that these are a POS in terms of reliability, I know this as my mum has a 2011 ML 350 CDI which is obviously the car that the GL is based on
I should also mention the issues with our ML that we’ve had:
The ignition key barrel failed which stranded us as it wouldn’t start, the car would randomly go into anti-theft mode (both of those happened when the car was only 4 years old), the air suspension compressor failed, the fuel pump failed (although that was the result of being broken by a mechanic) and last but not least, the car ate through 2 serpentine belts in a 6 month period due to a massive oil leak
Lastly, I should mention that it only has about 130,000 kms on it lol
'We' got 'our' moneys worth?
Lolol sorry bout your jeep smh..that sounds like a great deal if you’re handy
Wish I would have seen this video before I got one. Bought it and just realized the air ride system is going out. 4k to get fixed car was $6500 wtf
Every review you do I pray there's an ashtray just so I can hear what you have to say about it 😂
Hi mate, thanks for the review. Could you please do a review for the best reliable, affordable and luxury off road vehicle that are below $20k? Cheers
my 07 was 85k brand new. it has 116k miles on it, and it is only worth 5k. i'll tell you what though, for the 8700 i got it for, it was worth it. i do agree though, that whoever bought it brand new for 85k definitely didn't get something as nice as they should have gotten for the money. it does NOT feel as premium as it should for that money, i couldn't agree more. for the 9k i paid for mine, however, i can't complain at all thing is mint
When you say, “people say these things tow really well”……behind what?
Hey guys, can you do the same "should you buy" video on Infiniti FX/QX70? Looking at getting one so would be great to see your opinion on it.
Great request, we'll make it happen. - AK
I like this Merc mister but running one could well
Be a problem because if it breaks you'd better have deep pockets. No, if I wanted a Merc it'd have to be the old Military style G Wagon but I'd more likely go after the Landcruiser!
Suddenly, a disco is looking very reliable 😂😂
Buddy bought one brand new drove for 2 years and transmission went out another issue I have with Benz is a family member owned a dealership and said the rear end seems to be engineered to fail around 130k miles. Crash test ratings for getting hit from behind by a vehicle going around 30mph. Is pretty damn scary.
How about the 2nd gen GL? I mean the X166, did they fix the problems or are they just the same shit?
We need to find out. - AK
New design, new twin-turbo v8 that has its own issues if not maintained. Same diesel emissions issues But, that is industry-wide and not just limited to Mercedes-Benz. Similar suspension issues. Better quality interior.
They call it the S-Class of SUVs but the QC on them was worse than Kias of the time
Qc?
I have the 4L, V8 CDI diesel version and it's a 2011. I purchased it for the towing and i like luxury, I like quiet. I do most of the repairs and maintenance myself, so no biggie for me, but things do wear out or stop working. When I upgrade, I probably will go for another Mercedes, but I can also see myself in a full electric car, like a Tesla or maybe a right hand drive cybertruck when they come to NZ.
Great video, you guys deserve a lot more views. Detail is really useful
Back in the day one of my colleagues bought one of these things new. Let's just say she looked over her head trying to maneuver this thing in a parking lot. Previously they had purchased an E65 7 series. That piece of junk was lemon lawed.
I hate Benz. The worst enemy of my wallet😢😢😢😮
What about the model after this one. 2013 to 2019. Please review that too. Especially the petrols
This brother is saving people thousands of dollars.
They are Bluetec not cdi.
@@zfunk9 Mine was the 320cdi, not the newer 350 bluetec. The one I just bought is the V8 bluetec.
I also liked the specifications of the GL models and the interior design I like very much.

Great Channel Team. Are you able to do video on CLA/GLA 45 AMG
Already deep in planning it mate. - AK
Has the vehicle had a full scan? Are vehicle software and maps up to date? Are the date completed, i.e. timing chain and emission for the 350.

Loved it. Can y'all do a redriven review of the facelift W211 diesel (2007-2009) E-Class?
Kia Sportage? Hahahaha. What are you smoking?
Some wicked humour in this one. Made my evening. Cheers!

😵💫😵💫😵💫. So fingers crossed…🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 lol
Awesome video I will definitely be watching others.
How's it working out?
@@jamesmalin5988 so far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t have any major issues. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@chuckwallace4791 Glad to hear! Looking at a 2012 GL450. I saw a ML63AMG, but think it's just asking for trouble.
@james malin I’m going to live in ignorance and bless for now. lol. Maybe get one of those after market insurance plans to help pay for things if they break down.
Hopefully if you do get yours it will work out okay.
Its best in class…2012 GL550 rocks…bought it with 55k, now at 110k. Muffler and resonator delete with an x-pipe . Baddest SUV on the road…hands down.
Hi! We are looking at the Mercedes GL CDI 350 can you tell me what its like towing a caravan?
When it works, it's great. - AK
Show us more of the 6 series BMW that Jim is leaning on, in the video! 😍
Helpppp :)
In general no. I know some people have had some success using polishing compounds. You will never get the haze completely out.
I have an extra package "entitled arrogance" on back-order with my v10 twin turbo diesel
Having worked for a Mercedes dealer sort of recently, these along with the majority of the mid-late-00s Mercedes vehicles were absolute garbage. Built like crap, unreliable, and COMAND was just pure arse.
Which cars were considered as 'good cars'
What about the 2018 GLS 450 issues ?
I enjoy the videos but love the Mercedes ones. Any chance of a W210 and/or a W211 video please?
You tell the Truth I own a Merk another bag of bolts , e280 Cdi 200 km goes like a rocket I’m a fan of the V6 CDI But I’m not precious,it’s a work horse not a toy Great video
You can't blame owners on depreciation, blame the Australian government for luxury tax.
This is the reason they are so highly priced new!
