“…and there we have it!” authenticity, beauty, style, strength and grace. she conveyed the message of the lyrics effortlessly with her voice, her eyes and angelic face
Pure clean notes without all the face scrunches, warbles, trills, etc., that current artists feel the need to express. I'd forgotten how beautiful she was.
Thank you -- it's nice to hear someone else considers the current fashion for warbling is just a mask for the fact that the "artist" can't hold a clean note on pitch for more than half a bar.
Helen and Karen Carpenter both shared a clarity of tone and range. Neither of them ever had to struggle to hit notes. They both made everything look and sound easy.
In my humble opinion, Helen Reddy was the most underrated female singer of the rock era bar none! She had more hits than most of the so called "more popular singers", she had a better voice, and sold more records than they did! Not to mention Helen was the first Australian to win a Grammy, she has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, she was the first pop female singer to win an American Music Award, she was the first western singer to be invited to sing in China, she had the second most Top 20 hits on the Hot 100 in the 70s next to Olivia Newton John (who only had more because she did a few duets and weren't solo performance) etc. etc. etc. R.I.P. Helen, you were the best!
She wasn't all over the place or straining her voice or sounding constipated and sang this song to perfection. One of THE most beautiful songs from Andrew Lloyd Weber and the best rendition in my opinion.
Helen had a very distinctive voice. Clear, controlled, powerful and expressive. A string of so many memorable hit records. Good stuff. Well done Helen. Great analysis Fil! 🎼🎶🎶🇨🇦
But if her label had let her, she would have been able to show what an incredible voice she had - she was mostly strong-armed into singing "commercial" music. As a result, she rarely had the opportunity (except in live shows) to show her amazing range.
I saw her live on her last tour in Agoura Hills, CA at a small club. She sang the %$ paint off the walls - she was early 70s and still had every bit of her awesome talents. And was absolutely charming. She should be in the RRHOF without question.
I really like the way you can watch her facial expressions close-up. She is telling the story while she sings and her attitude comes through both in her face and in the sound of her voice.
Because there is none more respectful than you Fil, I knew you'd do a Helen Reddy analysis following her death. I wouldn't have figured it would be this performance. Thanks for the video and explaining why Helen was so good to those who may not have known.
Fil, I have a special needs (autistic) son who is now 30 years old. Growing up, he loved to watch many movies over and over! One of his favorite movies was a Disney movie 'Pete's Dragon'. Of course, Helen was one of the stars and sang several songs in it. But the one song she sang (and I heard it so many times!) that I vividly remember was 'Razzle Dazzle Day'. What memories! Thanks for this great analysis!!
My elder brother had an LP of the soundtrack of Pete's Dragon. I managed to buy a VHS video of the film and loved listening to the music, particularly Candle on the Water - such was the figurative way of mentioning the lighthouse in the movie. Thanks, Helen for giving us the privilege of listening to your songs. Rest in peace dear Lady.
Pete's Dragon was my exposure to her as well! It was one of the few movies that I was super obsessed with when I was little (you know how kids are, wearing out their favorite VHS tapes...) I later got into the rest of her music, and now it feels like at 25 I'm one of the youngest people who even knows her name lmao. Glad to see I wasn't the only Pete's Dragon-obsessed kid out there! It still holds up to the test of time, even if the animation is dated. Can't believe there was a whole Disney song describing how a bunch of adults want to beat/kill a kid XD
Helen is important in the career of Olivia Newton John, firstly after Olivia failed to win the Eurovision Song Contest, she had her first big hit in the USA, Helen advised her to relocate to the USA to be available there. Later in the 70s Helen invited Olivia to a dinner party, Alan Carr was there, struggling to find a leading lady for Grease, he found Olivia that night
Great Australian Singer I grew up in her era and was a fan of hers read a story on her only a few months ago how she gave it all away and came home t Australia to retire and lead a simple life. Thank you Phil for recognizing her. RIP Helen.
I remember when Helen won the Grammy and she thanked "God for She makes all things possible". It created a lot of comments. A strong woman and a beautiful voice!
Thank you so much for covering Helen Reddy. An exceptional 70s singer with a velvet voice. She was a tremendous success here in the states. We enjoyed her music immensely. Another huge loss for the music world. Very good analysis of Helen's music ability. She had proper vocal and body techniques that you pointed out. Cheers.
Our man Fil has a lot of depth. He specializes in hard rock guitar, vocals, etc.....---but he has a deep appreciation for multi genres of contemporary music.
I appreciate the educational review of the music, techniques and the history. I am a true fan of Fil. Listen to the music, it makes one's day a little better.
Thank you for highlighting Helen Reddy. She's been one of my favorite female singers since I was a teen. At the time she was popular, the music industry was stacked with female talent: Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, etc., but she stood out because of the purity of her voice. She could belt them out and was in a class of her own. It's funny that you noticed that she sung from her diaphragm! My dad first introduced the practice to me when we watched old Doris Day movies. He pointed out that you'd never see Doris take a breath because she pushed it out from her diaphragm. So, I immediately noticed Helen doing the same thing! Thanks, for giving some of Helen's history. I always found it very interesting. She never got the accolades she deserved. Her rendition of "Somewhere in the Night" remains my favorite.
Best female singer I've ever heard. I fell in love with her voice when I was about 12. The sweetest singing voice. Thank you for covering Helen. She and Mac Davis passed away on the same day - September 29, 2020.
Thank you so much for choosing this song. I had concentrated on her breakout hit/anthem since her passing. I had completely forgotten this original gem of perfection. Smooth clear calm effortless range. A person like I, who can only play the stereo, does not always appreciate how truly gifted a performer is. But, I do notice 'prepackaged', entirely technically created garbage. Helen was, bless her, the real deal. TgT
Thanks for the review and analysis. Informative and convincing. Although a superstar, Helen Reddy is a terribly under-recognized, under-appreciated artist.
Once heard never forgotten she was “Woman” and a very special one who achieved the heights making the songs her own in a very individual stand out way. RIP Ms. Reddy you were a great.
A great woman ... her voice is wonderful your excellent comments also the selection of the song you chose is fantastic and I think it is better and with more feeling than Yvonne Elliman one of the best songs of the 70s no more words ... rest in peace HELEN REDDY...🎙🎤💔💔💔💔😓😓🕆🕆🕆
Thanks so much for this lovely analysis, especially the breathing explanation. This song was iconic for me when it came out. I think it was the only one I knew by Helen. Always remembered her wonderful voice.
Excellent breakdown of Helen Reddy vocals Fil. Helen was another artist that held her own in the music/entertainment industry. always like her version of this song. "Rest in Peace" Helen great to have television and film footages of artist to look back on.
Wow!! This one followed another one, and I've only just discovered it. What a beast performance. I will share this forever. Everybody needs to hear this performance.
Thank you for this very loving and insightful look at the talents and unique gifts Helen had. I am 59 and from the US and was a fan from the very beginning, from this actual song. Every time I hear this song I want to cry. She not only has such great technique but amazing emotive ability. Just as an FYI here in the US it was not just a tv special but a comedy/variety series that ran an entire summer. She was overlooked at the time and was such an influence on my life. I am so happy to see people showing their appreciation of her now that she sadly has passed. I am also thrilled for her that at the end she was content and overjoyed having wonderful relationships with her 2 children. She was diagnosed with dementia 5 years ago and it seemed her last day was spent with her daughter and she was able to take it all in. Thanks for this. Your love for her talent touches me kind soul. When we can share such joy and passion thru the gift of music it is a special gift. Thanks for passing it on.
I constantly listened to the radio in that period of my life: in the car, at home, at work, etc. More than once I had to collect myself and my goosebumps when this song was played. She was a consummate performer and her facial expressions during this performance perfectly coincided with the sentiments she sang. And there you have it. Thank you for this special analysis of this special lady, Fil.
Another damn sad loss to music and all Fil! What an absolutely incredible voice this lady had! Hats off to my mum again for introducing me to her beautiful voice at a young age! Sensational Fil! Cheers Mario! 👌👌
Thank you Fil... I hadn't heard of Helen's passing but it's the passing of an era - the hope of the early 70s when people thought the whole world could and would change for the better. Helen gave voice to that spirit in "I am Woman" and it still rings out clear and true today. It's good to be reminded when some of what was fought for is at risk of being stripped away by people who only have concern for power and not for individual freedoms. Helen stood clear and strong, just the way you described her vocalizing, and there were plenty of folks who hated her for challenging the status quo. She had an honesty and a courage that came through her performances. Her voice always comforted me - it was clear as a bell and could be as gentle and moving as it was strong and bold. In Pete's Dragon, the song "There's Room for Everyone in this World" has a message that only gets more important as the years pass. Candle on the Water is a personal favorite that makes me cry (I sang it to my niece when she was just a toddler) Thank you for honoring her. I'm glad I heard of her death this way, from someone who feels like a friend. Rest in peace, Helen, and thank you for what you gave us…
It seems like we are going to have to do a rerun of the 70s. Who will play Helen's part? I was in my 20s then with energy. Who will play my part? My granddaughters shouldn't have to go back in time to the bad old days.
@@barbaraburton8914 My cousins' children are now entering their college years or are in their early to mid-20s. They have great passion for the earth and for human rights. We just have to help them ring some bells for freedom. I believe their generation will fight the good fight. And we can encourage them by being honest about what we've witnessed, and by having faith in them.
@@douglaso6428 I so hope you are right. I thought we had fought that fight and won. We can't go back. For the life of me I don't think men have thought this out. Why don't they invest this much energy toward abused children who were born and live horrible lives. The 2 most frightening words to a child are " mother's boyfriend". And then sometimes it's good ole mom. Not all women should be mothers. Same for men/fathers.
@@barbaraburton8914 The world has so many problems, it's true... And I understand just how you feel! If we all came together to put funds and energy into family planning, educating young people (both male and female) about the realities and risks of sexual activity, provided affordable daycare instead of declaring war on women. But this issue became a knee-jerk reaction. They always pushed that abortion equals murder, when (before Roe v. Wade) it was poor and middle-class women who were being murdered (or permanently scarred) by illegal, unqualified abortionists - or, just as tragic, were trying to terminate their pregnancies out of desperation and forever harming themselves. This is a "win" for those who don't truly understand that the abortion issue is about the life of the mother and the existing children who are already more than a family can support. And there have always been abortions. It's not anything women WANT to do; it's what they MUST do. If Mitch McConnell had been censured and possibly impeached for obstructing Barack Obama's Supreme Court nomination, if he had been held accountable for slowing down the judicial nominations of all kinds for 8 years and then ramming them through under Trump, we wouldn't be in this predicament. Too many words late at night! But God save our Republic from the corruption and power games of those who clearly have lost respect for a nation of laws and a great tradition of checks and balances.
I like she just sang the song, she didn’t make any body or hand motions. Just sang it cleanly. To me, it makes listening to her wonderful vocals easier than if there were distractions to watch.
Unfortunately, that was kind of her downfall on stage. People react better to entertainers than just singers, generally. Helen had an amazing talent, and she eventually learned to be more animated on stage.
Helen Reddy had one of the most distinct and recognizable voices in recording history…unmistakable, like Peter Cetera, Roy Orbison, Bing Crosby, Julie Andrews, Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash.
You make music so much deeper beyond the performance. Your analysis gives a multifaceted view of the hidden talents of artists we almost take for granted. Cheers!
Now that your analysis's are less frequent, I really look forward to them a lot! Thank you for helping me to understand and appreciate the songs I've listened to all my life.
I am old enough to have enjoyed her string of hits when they came out. She was a remarkable singer with a distinctive voice. Thanks, Fil. She was one of the greats.
Thank you for acknowledging the Queen of 70s Pop! I have been her number 1 fan since 1971 since this song came out! She is absolutely one of the best female singers of all time! If you have an questions let me know! You're My World was another big hit for Helen where I personally think was her best vocal performance! Love this tribute and thank you again!
AHhh... the incredible Helen Reddy... who doesn't love her? Beautiful voice, beautiful and talented woman and a HUGE voice for equality and justice for not only women but for all. As an advocate for social justice and human rights, Hellen Reddy is one of my heroes. Love this song so much, so beautiful, just wonderful. RIP Ms. Reddy.
Thank you so much for this tribute and all the information and instructional comments. I Am Woman was a big influence in my life in my tender teen years. She, along with Heart and Tina Turner, gave me courage to pursue things I may not have otherwise.
Hi Fil! She had such a distinctive voice...I really loved her singing, and the way she delivered the songs! Thanks for remembering her! Btw...Angie Baby was one of my favorites of hers...such a strange song but I loved it! She will be missed! ✌️
I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you have showcased Helen Reddy. The last time I had thought about her was in high school; you have reminded me what an influence she had been on my childhood. I've been watching her videos all week. Thank you!
I've watch your analysis and Helen Reddy's performance several times now. excellent job on pointing out the little details that I have miss in the past.
She sings so effortlessly, such an amazing voice. Thank you Fil. I really liked the song You and me against the world, that was my favorite song of hers, rest well Helen, you've been loved by millions, rest well.
I was nine when this song came out, although I can remember hearing it throughout my youth. Growing up as a hard rock Child of the 70s and 80s. Secretly back then I always loved Helen's voice and songs🙂
So many artists that created the soundtrack of my life, our lives, are leaving us at a too rapid rate lately and it's like a punch in the gut😢. Thanks Fil for easing the pain a little. 🤘
Your critiques are the best. And you're absolutely adorable, too. Sorry, had to say it. Your smile melts me. Especially since it shows you truly appreciate and are loving these beautiful songs.
Absolutely fascinating. Definitely one of my favorite analysis. That business with the breathing/ diaphram actually explained something visually to me, I was unable to comprehend despite many 'vocal coach' videos trying. LOL, Fil + a tight fitting top = ah ha clarity ! As for Helen, she was immaculate in what she did, and her voice had just a hint of nasality that provided some added interest and distinction to her work. I know what I like, but I don't always know exactly why. That's where these videos come in.
Fil, I love your analysis, but sometimes I can't wait to get through it because I can't wait to go back and listen again. This was one of those times. She really grabbed my heart with this one.
Fil, you provided a wonderful musical analysis and tribute to the legendary Helen Reddy. As you mentioned, her vocal talents were immense which included tonal consistency, clarity and pitch accuracy. Though I was too young to remember her then, I remember Helen performing "I Am Woman"--she had me convinced. As always, you teach and remind me: your mention of songwriters composing without the mindset regarding singers' vocal abilities(in opera and musical theater)did both. Fil, thanks again for this tribute and for all you do. RIP Helen.
This was a vocal masterclass for female pop singers Brilliant Cheers Phil in Australia 🇦🇺 a huge fan of Helen Reddy ( I’m a former singing coach Thank you 🎶🎶❤️
Wow, Thank you great analysis of Australia’s Queen of Pop and also especially her history. I still listen to her music it brings back so much memories of the 70s and 80s in my teens when we only could afford to listen to music on the radio in cats and at home.
Oh wow rip Helen Reddy. What a wonderful analysis.👏 If I could have any singing voice it would be hers. I think her performance here is a master piece. My favorite lines "I don't know how to love him" , " if he said he loved me I'd be lost", "he scares me so". What a voice. Have a good day Fil, stay rested & don't work to hard.❤
Once again you analyze a song from my younger years and nailed it. I was in high school during the early 70s and Helen Reddy was playing on all the radio stations. I'm repeating myself, but the positive way you cover these artists is great. I'm in awe of your musical knowledge. I had both voice and guitar instructors who never conveyed what you describe.
Very nice tribute Fil. I remember her song "I am Woman" when I was a girl and felt empowered by it. Your analysis of her vocal strength was informative, thank you. RIP Helen
Helen Reddy was a huge party of my musical memory. I heard her on the radio all through my school years in NZ. Interesting to see that someone I enjoyed so much had so much real skill to back that popularity
As always, a great, in depth analysis of another wonderful, late, artist whom I admired! I appreciate the time you spend to provide the artist's history and to articulate your insight into his/her music/style. Also appreciate your high energy and clear delivery!
I was a child of the 70s and always loved seeing Helen perform. She has a very natural singing voice. I was very sad when she passed. I just finished watching a movie about her life on Netflix called "I Am Woman" it was a great movie. R.I.P. Helen. I miss you.😪
I love hearing your take on things that I never thought about. I grew up as a young girl listening to her sing and never could appreciate it, I was just a dumb kid. LOL!! Thanks, Fil!
I enjoy your channel, there are a few reaction channels I visit from time to time, Your pleasant analysis and educational information is very interesting, as a music lover since the late 60s , I am amazed at the talent of my generation, simply a generation of great people, so much talent, thank you
She was simply lovely in so many ways. I don’t want to think of her as gone. 😢
I do think it's cute but maybe not necessary when current vocalists grimace a little on one side of their face to emphasize a note. 💕
She sings it perfectly without putting too much salt in the soup
Helen and Karen Carpenter both shared a clarity of tone and range. Neither of them ever had to struggle to hit notes. They both made everything look and sound easy.
Both my favourites, wouldn't want to choose between them
100% true
Yes as did Londa Ronstadt and the very underrated Marilyn McCoo. Angels singing songs for us.
What awesome note and word emphasis.. feel every word and emotion.
Could not agree more though slightly different styles both had similar talents that emphasized tone, melody, words et al. May both of these angels RIP
Instantly recognisable voice which immediately takes you back to days in the mid 70s.
In my humble opinion, Helen Reddy was the most underrated female singer of the rock era bar none! Helen Ready was underrated in Australia but she was a house whole name in the US because of her hits and tv programs.
I never knew she passed away until today. Now I’m sad for awhile. She was part of my youth.
She had such a distinctive voice. A wonderful voice. Thank you for featuring her.
Everything she sang was beautiful. A unique voice so lovely.
She wasn't all over the place or straining her voice or sounding constipated and sang this song to perfection. One of THE most beautiful songs from Andrew Lloyd Weber and the best rendition in my opinion.
Without a doubt, the best vocal of that great composition, what a strong pleasing voice she had.

Such an amazing performance. I remember being mesmerized by this when I was a kid, even though the lyrics had no meaning for me yet.
Jim Ward , so true!

I had such a crush on Helen Reddy, back in the 70's.
This video reminds me very much why that was so.
She was so beautiful, all around.
I still do when I think about her, in the way that she will live forever on film
Because there is none more respectful than you Fil, I knew you'd do a Helen Reddy analysis following her death. I wouldn't have figured it would be this performance. Thanks for the video and explaining why Helen was so good to those who may not have known.

But God save our Republic from the corruption and power games of those who clearly have lost respect for a nation of laws and a great tradition of checks and balances.
hEY wINGS , THANK YOU FOR THE TRIBUTE TO THIS GENIUS OF SONG
God bless the authentic and talented Helen Reddy.
I like she just sang the song, she didn’t make any body or hand motions. Just sang it cleanly. To me, it makes listening to her wonderful vocals easier than if there were distractions to watch.
Unfortunately, that was kind of her downfall on stage. People react better
to entertainers than just singers, generally.
Helen had an amazing talent, and she eventually learned to be more animated on stage.
Magnificent Failure Her downfall? Reddy, Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter all had tremendous careers without histrionics.

Helen Reddy had one of the most distinct and recognizable voices in recording history…unmistakable, like Peter Cetera, Roy Orbison, Bing Crosby, Julie Andrews, Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash.
She was amazing. Fascinating history of how she became successful. Thanks for the analysis.
Helen Reddy is as good as Streisand in my opinion. Strong controlled and seriously has the mojo on top of it. She's a super star!
Wonderful woman and loved many of her songs, thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful lady ❤️❤️ She had such a strong voice. I remember listening to her when I was just a kid. RIP sweet lady.
So sad to have lost Helen Reddy and Mac Davis so close to one another. Two top tier artists that I grew up with. Brings my own mortality into focus.

Strange coincidence indeed...
Until now I didn't realize she had passed. Both were great talents and the world has a large void.
When I was really young,I never really gave thought to the phrase
“ What a Priveledge it is to grow old “ So many don’t ever get that privilege.
Always remember Mac from North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte 😀

Growing old is a privilege denied to many. - (Almost the same great meaning.)
Yes true.,.
I loved her singing. She was an inspiration for women everywhere. Your analysis is spot on.
AHhh... the incredible Helen Reddy... who doesn't love her? Beautiful voice, beautiful and talented woman and a HUGE voice for equality and justice for not only women but for all. As an advocate for social justice and human rights, Hellen Reddy is one of my heroes. Love this song so much, so beautiful, just wonderful. RIP Ms. Reddy.
_ME!_
Yes many don't know how much she did or how much money she contributed to and raised to social justice issues.
Helen along with John Denver were really the sounds of my childhood
Strong voice, strong lady.
May God be with her. Her voice touches my soul.
RIP Helen.
This was a vocal masterclass for female pop singers
Brilliant
Cheers Phil in Australia 🇦🇺 a huge fan of Helen Reddy ( I’m a former singing coach
Thank you 🎶🎶❤️
for me its the magical/emotional feeling her singing gives to the song..
Helen's facial expressions are sooooo engaging 😵💫
Great commentary Phil!
She was a great talent with a beautiful unique sound , she is on par with greats like Karen Carpenter.
What an inspiring woman of my youth. Thank you for this!
I would love to see a video on Olivia Newton-John. Hint, Hint.
Thanks for the kind words!
Fantastic that you spoke so nicely of her. She was great and you showed a lot of class recognizing her talents in such a friendly way.
Very nice tribute Fil. I remember her song "I am Woman" when I was a girl and felt empowered by it. Your analysis of her vocal strength was informative, thank you. RIP Helen
Strong rich voice was so compelling that she led the women's movement with her anthem I Am Woman.
Helen Reddy was a huge party of my musical memory. I heard her on the radio all through my school years in NZ. Interesting to see that someone I enjoyed so much had so much real skill to back that popularity
You are amazing your analysis is second to none.
Man, you impress the Hell out of me, and there's not a lot of people who do that. Your analysis of music is excellent. I liked Helen's hit songs, but
Thanks!
I enjoy your channel, there are a few reaction channels I visit from time to time,
Your pleasant analysis and educational information is very interesting, as a music lover since the late 60s , I am amazed at the talent of my generation, simply a generation of great people, so much talent, thank you
