There is A LOT of stuff from back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s that wouldn't fly by today's standards. PC successfully manipulated young "manhood" (and womanhood) tremendously..
FYI Van Halen’s video for Intruder/Pretty Woman was actually banned from MTV it was one of the first videos banned along with a Madonna video I think papa don’t preach
There were less cry babies in the 80s, and if you whined about "you hurt my feelings" you were made fun of (rightfully) or told to grow a pair. Words don't hurt unless you let them.
@@ekgrafix Political correctness started to take hold with companies targeting big business back in the 80's. It was a 'save the kids' era. With alt-right groups like the PMRC trying to save the kids. Drinking ages went up, Parental Advisory warnings started being used for recordings, Reagan the a war on drugs, some areas were really pushing for mandatory bicycle helmets (it hadn't hit the ski industry yet). Some of it was sensible but some of it was stupid, mainly where music was concerned. For example, taking metal bands to court by parents of kids who killed themselves due to the music. Bands accused of putting satanic hidden messages in the albums. I remember a rumor going around that RUSH's band name stood for Rock Under Satans House. Anyone who is a fan of Rush would find that laughable. MTV was very commercial though and had to appeal to a wide audience. Huge companies like Nike for example were pressured to take their ads off due to videos with sexism, racial issues, violence, etc. But in the real world, outside of the commercial BS- it was sex, drugs, and Rock -N- Roll for many. TV was interesting because it didn't allow profanity or nudity ( and it still doesn't for regular network channels.) but the themes would have been eaten up today by all the various left wing cry baby groups we have today. As Tim said, some big business and a few powerful 'religious' groups were whining but the average guy wasn't overly bothered with that noise. Or even aware because you didn't have all the internet noise going on and news everywhere you looked. [ps. speaking of internet noise- sorry for all the words I got carried away.]
There was love between everybody then. No PC, no hate, just love for everyone! This played easily on MTV because it was tongue and cheek. Just a good time!!
It's not as bad as what happened with Sussudio. I got onto a bus and it was playing, a BUS. It was everywhere. Overplaying that song ruined Phil Collins for me, I used to really like him, but just getting back into him now.
I can hear moms today saying "how could you let your young son be in a video like that?!?" Trust me....women in the 80's would have LOVED to have their boy get the chance to be in a Van Halen video. Well..except for Tipper Gore.
It was directed by David Lee Roth, the lead singer. This was around the time where the relationship between DLR and guitarist Eddie Van Halen was about to come to a head. Roth wanted to make videos and movies; Eddie wanted to make music. If you wanna see more of Roth's videos -- which are fucking HILARIOUS -- check out his cover of "California Girls" and "Just a Gigalo/I Ain't Got Nobody."
The eruption guitar solo is the most impressive live guitar solos of all time. Definitely worth a review. Right Now is probably their most serious song. It is also great and from their later period when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth on vocals. From the Roth era I recommend unchained and mean streets, but strongly recommend the studio versions of everything but the eruption guitar solo which is a must to do live.
I can verify that yes this song was definitely played on tv. It might’ve been Friday night videos, which started late in the LA area, but it was on. And I know MTV played it even years later.
You encapsulated the time period perfect. The 80’s had to be the funnest time period in history. Loved Van Halen’s elite level musicianship combined with upbeat songwriting.
7:20 It was actually on MTV quite a lot. The day after it premiered one afternoon every red blooded American at every high school across the nation was talking about it. By the way, Eddie Van Halen was the man who played the guitar solo for Michael Jackson's classic song Beat It.

Van Halen has so many great songs. You have to listen to some of Roth's songs ain't talking about love, jump, running with the devil. Then you have to listen to Hagar's songs right now, poundcake, feelin, and Human beings. All great songs.
Nope. This was perfectly acceptable in the 80's. I went to see this tour. I was 16. Back in those days if you didn't come back from a VH concert reeking of sweat, cigarette smoke, beer, pot smoke and possibly even vomit (either yours or someone else's),then you weren't really at the concert!
Eddie Van Halen is one of the most influential guitarists in Rock and Roll. Chuck Berry brought the guitar into the forefront of R&R, Jimi Hendrix changed the things you could do with it, and Eddie Van Halen ushered in the era of INSANE solos.
That was Eddie Van Halen on all guitars, one of the most brilliant rock guitarists ever! And the video really was great, and so funny... I first saw it when it came out on MTV way back when, and it's as funny now as it was then! David Lee Roth always has been an over-the-top showman, but the rest of the band keeps up with all the hilarious choreography! So, yes, an amazing video, and welcome to the world of Van Halen!

OMG! This came out when I was in Jr. High. I thought this was the coolest video back then and you know it's still pretty damn awesome. I dare you to try to do that opening drum sequence on Guitar Hero World Tour, expert level. Go ahead, I'll wait.... LOL.
Man, you hit it directly on the head!! Today's stupid, thin-skinned and ridiculous PC society WOULD'VE banned this song!! This videao played on MTV round the clock back when it came out. Van Halen was my 1st arena rock show. Van Halen was my favorite group at the time. Admission seating and I payed $12.50 for the ticket. Stood on the floor maybe 10-15 ft from center stage. What a night for a 15 year old kid!
If you haven't done it already, the song Mean Streets. I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California in the 70's. I went to many back yard parties that Van Halen played. They lasted about 15 minutes before the police broke them up. Many were held in the South Pasadena/San Marino area. Very rich neighborhoods. They didn't really dig hundreds of teenagers showing up all fucked up and the band playing loud enough to be heard blocks away. Cops and helicopters were commonplace.
My man! I'm sorry for you that you missed the 80's. It was the best of times, It was the "Bester" of times. No Tale of two cities then. Van Halen, with David Lee Roth, gave us the "Panama" video and "Jump". These were the greatest video days. Rock on my man! I loved your review, awesome!!

This was on at least 25 times a day, it's first year, then about 15 times a day for roughly two years. When the next video came out it dropped to about 10 times a day. Lol! Awesome song, video and band! We all thought the Mom at the begining was weird the first time we saw it but figured she was just trying to get Waldo off to school before the mail man showed up. Lol! The video's story line is basically from elementry school up through graduation. The jail cell denotes two things, they are old enough to do something about their feelings but she's still the teacher , so they can't (hence the smokin hottie in a leather teddy with a ridding crop, almost dominatrix but not quite). Also, they are almost old enough to "go out into the world" but not quite (second meaning of the jail cell), then they are let out and the bus is now a hot rod because, basically, they are now "hot rods", not little kids anymore. And the teacher "stripping" is supposed to be their imagination. When she walks out in normal clothes, that's reality. When she tears them off, that is their imagination kicking in. Story telling, bro, story telling! I would recomend other things by them and Eddie but as I notice this is about 4yrs after the fact, you've probably been told already. Lol! This was one of the videos they played for congress during the PRMC hearings to show how bad rock n roll was and to prove they needed those parental warning labels. The other song was “We’re Not Gonna Take It!” Miss u Edward. RIP
Van Halen was a fun band with serious musical chops. I mean, yeah, the music video was ...well ... yeah (same with Motley Crue's Girls, Girls, Girls video). Van Halen is a rabbit hole worth going down. They had their own style and inspired a lot of others.
Holy cowwwwwwwwwwwww You reacted to a Van halen tune...I been messaging you over and over and over but YOU DID IT.😊 You & ur Wife need to react to the song that started it all for Van halen- Aint talkin bout love (studio version) Its gonna drop ur jaw i promise
Eddie Van Halen revolutionized playing the guitar in rock in the late 70s early 80s, the same way jimi hendrix did in the 60s. another great Van Halen song, with the most iconic intro riff of all times would be "Ain't talkin bout love".

I was just going to mention that!😂
I've been watching you almost a year now and somehow missed this react video of my fave band lol. This was Alllllll over MTV. Haha. We didn't care about political correctness back then. Everyone was having fun no matter what race they were lol
Lol hahahahaha...... I recently showed my wife this video and she loved it
This song came out when I was 10. It’s like they were in my mind man. ;)
Absolutely played daily on MTV.
it was all over MTV back in the day .. it played at least 12 a day for months
In the eighties we didn't ban real life,
Holy cowwwwwwwwwwwww You reacted to a Van halen tune...I been messaging you over and over and over but YOU DID IT.😊 You & ur Wife need to react to the song that started it all for Van halen- Aint talkin bout love (studio version) Its gonna drop ur jaw i promise
Im a Patreon now...I finally found the patreon link or i woulda joined much earlier😁
This is a classic song and video.
It was played on MTV ALL THE TIME. :)
Love this!!! Not banned but played ALOT!
Eddie Van Halen revolutionized playing the guitar in rock in the late 70s early 80s, the same way jimi hendrix did in the 60s.
another great Van Halen song, with the most iconic intro riff of all times would be "Ain't talkin bout love".
This has aged well. Finding Van Halen in 2020. RIP Eddie. Good for you!
This definitely wasn't banned from TV. Where do you think we watched it? There was no internet back then - it was on MTV constantly.
Yay! I’m glad you liked it.
It was on MTV all the time!!!
Eddie Van Halen is one of the greatest guitarists in the world. RIP
It was on MTV that was made for videos and that was Eddie Van Halen on the guitar and David Lee Roth was the singer and Alex Van Halen was the drummer
Yeah, not banned...was on heavy rotation in MTV back when they actually played music videos. The guitarist is Eddie Van Halen, one of the top guitar gods. Want to hear a solo? Check out Eruption live 1986.
