More importantly, I’m learning some new key concepts in these positions that’ll help me improve! Thanks man!

Kinda of a newbie over here, got to 1200-1300 all thanks to your videos (many thanks)... maybe this would sound too dumb... but it would be nice a video of what openings are counters for other openings, or work best against it.
Also, i started playing tournaments and blitz, and it would be nice a video about openings for that could work better for speed chess.
Another thing i think it would be usefull is a video of transposing openings.
I learnt caro kann, scandinavian, dragon sicilian, closed sicilian, sicilian, english, traxler, liver attack, king's indian, pirc, dutch (classical, and leningrad), london, queen's gambit, vienna's gambit, evans gambit, stafford gambit, danish gambit, and sometimes i've got by instinct to other openings.... Oh and now french.

Once again, Levy, I think you're very easily one of the best chess teachers/coaches out there. There is a world of difference between being able to play well and being able to teach well, and you're exceptional at both.
I would like to say, though, anyone learning the French, once you're comfortable with it, Johnathan Schrantz made a video about a variation of the Advance French (1. e4, e6; 2. d4, d5; 3. e5, c5) that is really sharp, and can easily be fumbled, but it will catch a lot of people sleeping if you get it down. In my experience with it, most players don't have a deep enough repertoire against the French to defend against it. But...I wouldn't even watch the video until you're already comfortable with the French in general.

If anyone is interested. Happy playing.

Decided I ought to learn the Advance variation because I play the Scandinavian and sometimes these guys are like "no thx" and they push e5 and then I gotta do the French or the Caro-Kann and since I judge things by their name alone the French sounded less intimidating to learn.

    Heavy metal.
The french defense is my favorite opening defense as black. I learned it through Simon William's "Killer French" videos. This video does a fair job of covering the main idea in a concise way, nicely done.

When I played tournaments, I used the Pirc as my surprise and the French as my forever. I once heard the French described as similar to a vacuum cleaner. It soaks up all the pressure and you are left with a slightly better endgame in many cases. I found this to be true.

I have a question. What are the advantages of this opening over the caro kann? To my scrub eyes, it just looked like a more cramped version of the ck.

    • @NakasDougen

as a complete beginner, for me the french feels more attacking than the Carro Kann, especially in the advanced variation of the c-k it feels very much clogged for black

    • @tongpoo8985
      @tongpoo8985 3 роки тому

@@NakasDougen I've played a bit of the caro kann and it really does feel cramped. Have no experience with the french because the main perceptible difference to me is that you don't get your light squared bishop outside of the pawn chain and you get to play c5 in one move. Due to the bishop being stuck, I always figured the advance french would feel more cramped than the advance caro. There must some difference making the french so popular, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. What makes the French feel more attacking to you?
I always return to my trusty sicilian dragon.

@@tongpoo8985 I am a french player and I have had a lot of succsses with this opening .Let me first explain why the french is not bad according to your dislikes
1.About the bishop on c8 ,yes its bad ,its cramped but in my experience you just put it on d7 to shield the king from checks[ the bd3 discovery trick ] I can understand why its not the best bishop but it is certainly not the worst .The bishop can be traded on b5 or fianchettoed .Its not the worst really .
2.The french being cramped is its whole idea .What I mean by this is that whites pawns espicially on e5 and d4 occupy more space and thus are naturally futher advanced which is why you undermine with c5 or f6 .Often times this applies pressure on whites postion more than he would like .This often compensates for the lack of space as you will have just enough space to develop you queen side pieces which is what you want to do in the french I will explain later about how to develop the king side pieces .
      WHY I LIKE THE FRENCH
      1. EASY DEVELOPMENT
blacks way of developing is the same almost always on e5 . Queen on b6 Night on c6 Rook on c8 Bishop on d7 or b7 and the pawns lined up to attack on d4 .The king side pieces
Ok I have enjoyed this setup throughly Knight from h6 [ if they capture then the g file is open and they cant safely castle ] to f5 , bishop to e 7 and castles the roook on f8 doesn't active till endgame the most important H5 H4 and I am not kidding this setup completely restricts the king side attack as well as being defended very well .
      ND2/NC3
I prefer to take and go for bd7 bc6 bf3 c6 .This defence is very solid and they should think before saying that they can defeat this variation .Its very good .
      2. UNEXPECTED OPENING
Most players will study the sicilian or the ruy but the french will be completely unexpected that paired with you a prepared opponent is awesome
      3. EASY STUDYING
If you stick to the simple lines with take on e4 followed by bd7 you need to study less then the average compared to playing the caro or esspicially the sicilian .There is another ppoint that there are less gambits to study .Often time gambits are complicated and are hard to study but the french has....................one that is the bb2 line no hilberry attack or nothing while the sicilian has quite a bit honestly and the caro has hilberry which is rare but is needed for studying .
      4. EASY PIECE ACTIVITY AND PRESSURE
The french is just easy and fun to play with your peices as well as putting A LOT of pressure on white. I would not like to be white and be pressured like this .
Anyway the french just suits my style , you might have a different one .

Thank you so much for the video, I play much better defense now! I was wondering if anybody got a tip for when white brings the bishop to support the center pawn as well? It happened to me a few times, making it so that I am not winning the trade anymore. Anyone got tips?
