- Food Globalization: The Truth Behind Cheap Food | Investigative Documentary from 2013
Who’s paying the real price for the cheap food in our supermarkets? We investigate the conditions under which three staples - bananas, vegetables and fish - are produced. In Italy, illegal workers from sub-Saharan Africa live in appalling conditions, working long hours under the control of omnipotent ‘caporalatos’. In Cameroon, the banana industry stands accused of appropriating land, polluting the environment and bribing local politicians. Meanwhile in Guinea, fish stocks are plundered by foreign fleets. The African workers on these ships are often exploited and abused.

Most of us say we would have spoken up about slavery, holocaust and other terrible things. But how many of us won't even try to buy differently 😔. Please people, we've got to let our spending speak.
Most of us don't have choice. All the stores around me are huge chains except 1.
I cant afford to shop there.
I would rather shop there. But minimum wage doesn't go that far...
@@amandap9332 what a world... Wishing you all the best 🙏
@K lake are you kidding?
@K lake you can go on with what? Jobs that dont exist in my area? Jobs that are still ridiculously underpaid? Jobs that abuse employees? Jobs that encourage abuse from others? Jobs that require expensive schooling to qualify for?
Do you have any clue at ALL what type of income a minimum wage job was meant to have? Obviously not. Go educate yourself on the subject. Until then, stfu.
@K lake no, I wouldn't. You have no idea what my life is like. And I dont cry "victim" I call out the system.
Which is what we ALL should be doing.
And I notice you did no research on what minimum wage was meant for....
Careful, your bias is showing.
Shocking! I'm going to think twice about buying fruit and veg...I would rather get locally sourced produce in season than be a consumer buying food where people are victims of modern day slavery!
I agree
I agree also. But these things need to change. Sometimes we don't have a choice on where we work to just survive. We can only change ourselves and help others. I pray that this will change for them. Its sad
Plant your own fruits and vegetables!
and locally grown produce holds the right vitamins against local illnesses .. imported fruits, meats and veggies have not.
Buy fruits and veggies from an individual farmers, or if you have a piece of land and time, grow your own food.
Not just food, construction , manufacturing, retail etc. Wage fixing, wage theft . Human trafficking.
Slavery never ended
That’s like saying hunger never ended. Idiot
Very true.
you’re right

Nope. Wrong. Videos are monetized by content creators themselves, not UA-cam. If you don't like the ads blame the content creators, but understand they are putting out content for free so they need to be compensated for their work. Either that or just pay the measly $9 per month UA-cam Red subscription then all your vids will be ads-free.

GREED...ITS HEART BREAKING TO SEE THIS...
What is shameful is all these levels of governments who close a blind eye, they just do their job! And then the leaders of the countries which are complicit to this enslavement so they can live wealthy! It s all so shameful. Communism will not fix this and unions at first will make a slight difference but then themselves will become the abuser! # shameful!
The reason why these working conditions exist is because these companies pay off corrupt government cronies to turn a blind eye. The fish rots first from the head, surely. Excuse the pun..
I was thinking the same thing. "There's no way government officials don't know what's going on"
True in part, however it is the consumer who wants cheap food, unseasonal food all year round.
@@samdasilva1914 Unbridled demand, that is!
True...in this corrupt countries, big companies bribe from the top office. I was working in a certain company where working hours are from 7.30 to 6 pm. Working for 9 and half hours per day. I resigned after 3 months, I was one tired person full of stress.
Reporting to labour offices is just a waste of time, because the big companies have already bought protection.
@@samdasilva1914 If your options were cheap food or no food, would you choose to starve?
As a young man I was working in agriculture in Spain and Italy(grapes, oranges, patatoes...), this film is the truth, if you eat , even plant food, especially exotic, not local, you drink other human's blood, you're not a vegan, you're a cannibal
What's worse is people exploiting both.
Well said my friend
You can't make me stop eating exotic fruits!
I hate when people ask to remain anonymous, BUT the interviewer still shows some body part or clothing or cars or house which is identifiable (using an actor is good or blurring ALL/ Everything of the anonymous person) leaving nothing to chance

The Italian tomato pickers remind me of my many summertimes as a young teenage kid picking blueberries at a rate of $4 per beach pale, and each pale took about an hour to fill. I worked along side mostly Jamaicans who sent the money home for their families while the farmer provided housing to the illegal immigrants. I was doing it because i had no other way to get weed and booze money. Keep in mind this was in the early 2000s in Massachusetts.

I bet you’re so much fun at parties.
In Italy not only people from Africa work in those conditions but also from Europe: from Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria or Moldavia.
Those people set their own terms. It is not exploitation, like it is of the Africans. You’re a horrible bigot for trying to defend modern slavery.

It's called slavery in a different name, still going on amongst us with the same people.
Its cruel soulless exploitation, but not slavery. There are no fences, no chains, no dogs, no whips. The people work there because its the only job they can find and if they quit they would have nothing. I'm in exactly the same situation, like hundred of millions other workers, except my living conditions are not near as crappy. But i still work a crappy job very hard for very little pay while my boss drives to "work" every day at noon in his sports car. Nothing in this world is fair.
slavery with extra steps
@@heinkorbee1459 Its society, they work for each other, they pay each other, they buy houses, they get married and make children who replace them when they are too old to make food...
Although despicable, and depressing, it also burns my soul that slavery, disrespect, and the exploitation of the poor, hardly sustaining their livelihood, working long hours, hard labor, and abuses, are extremely disturbing. ..and this goes on literally "blatantly" in other countries. the leaders fail their own people. Thank you for your attempt at real change...I will forward this video to many.
Sadly, this just happens on multiple levels to different people. Lower end workers too but they think they are getting a ok deal since it's "not as bad as others" but they may be educated into thinking in a completely opposite way or making others complacent and not seeing a lot of the world as it is. Also stoking flames and making other issues pop up to hide the real problems and hard situations. This is also coming from someone who has lived in a lower-income family and the mindset instilled upon poorer people for generations.
Slevary is disrespect right but people small work or big work no disrespect ful. I gave u ultimately rediscovery. Don't worry Slevary is finished but take to a tone. Patelvimal.
Worlld people's are sleeping of empty stomach but take to a time please save my sentence. Patelvimal.at this time I am working a small work but high thought not low.
Yup...is in fact despicable that now in loads of the European countries the companies are pressuring governments for allowing even more migrant workers treated as slaves because according to the "industrials" the local people don't want to work receiving misery salaries like before...just for their profits to remain high...!
Ironic how their own black kin sold them into slavery isn't it? Funny how the only white man in the video is the one giving them work, pay, and housing, and yet they still complain when they aren't legally allowed to even be there.
the rabbit hole is deep.

Cheap food depends on where you live.
Thanks for your documentary video.
This used to exist in my agricultural area for decades up until late 90s in Northwest USA. Thank goodness its almost all gone. We were blessed to be able to provide free housing to our workers. But yes many of the "Corporal" would only distribute maybe 50% of pay to actual workers. Whats crazy is field labor only affects market price by pennies. Now most make $12-$20 an hour which is a decent wage.
3-4 Euro per hour is the standard pay in this type of low skill jobs in Poland. And life is as expensive as everywhere else in the EU. That's why people don't even think twice, poverty simply forces them to migrate to the West.
