    Thanks for the great videos. I preparing to build my 16 x 18 deck. My situation is just as yours, where I have stucco wall and the deck is about 10 feet off the grounds. After watching you video, it was a good guide and reminder of some of the steps I did building my last deck about 10 years ago. Glad I also too picture of my house while under construction, so I know where that rim joist is located. So, like you I don't have to search for studs behind the stucco.

    I wanted to attach the Ledger Board high up to build a roof over a patio, so thanks for the video. I have scuppers that pour too much water to a deck below, so with a patio roof I can add gutters with downspouts to manage water volume.

    Right on time.The exact thing I'm getting ready to do. Should you caulk the top of ledger for water ?

      Yeah I put a roof on so I didn't, but if not, there should be some flashing and caulking there.

    Thanks for sharing your video. I am a DIYer and have a similar project for a 18” deck height. You mentioned using stud finder to find the stud inside the stucco wall. Have you tried it? Which stud finder do you recommend? Some people say stud finders do not effectively detect studs because of the wire mesh, etc. Thanks

    • @jiggidaboo
      @jiggidaboo  3 роки тому +2

      Hey bud. Honestly my stud finder didn't work through the stucco due to the metal screen, but luckily my rim joist lined up exactly where I needed the floor of the deck to fall. I would recommend using the stud finder inside the house through sheetrock, find your stud spacing, which may be 16" or 18" on center then apply that spacing to the outside of the house. Drill a small pilot hole and check to make sure you're hitting wood with each new stud. You can always put a little stucco patch in the pilot hole if you miss.

    Can I ask why it's not fixed to the house beneath the stucco? I'm going to be doing a roof ledger soon on a stucco house. I figured for best water shed I would need to do so...

      The porch? I built a roof over it so was not really concerned about water intrusion where porch meets the house. Rafters for porch roof sat on top of a ledger on top of existing roof at outside wall of house. End product ua-cam.com/users/shorts5_com-Zv9R4?feature=share

    Hello Bart How do you determined the location of the ledger board, you say you measured it below your window! By how many feet or inches. Thanks Bart.

    • @jaydu-sauzay4276
      @jaydu-sauzay4276 Рік тому

      The top of it is going to be the same height as your floor maybe an inch below. Measure inside from the floor to the underside of the floor above (You'll have to get into the ceiling). Then use that same measurement on the outside of the wall. Or just look above the ceiling at the perimeter wall and see where that ledger board is.

    Question no barrier membrane before the ledger board for stucco🤔

    • @jiggidaboo

      I covered the entire deck with a roof attached to the existing roof so I didn't worry about it. Only the bolts are penetrating and the area never gets exposed to water.

      You can also just use ledger board offsets. Those will keep the board slightly away from the house, so that no moisture can build up behind the ledger board. Make sure to apply silicone to the offsets on the side to touches the house.

  • @kegawinek7628
    @kegawinek7628 4 роки тому

    What do you use for a moisture barrier? Is it not required if only the bolts penetrate the exterior stucco?

      Thanks, I'm looking to attach a patio cover to my stucco directly above my windows. There is no eave I can build of of. I was planning to install a gutter above the ledger to direct rain away from the patio area, but am unsure if it would be enough. I'm in Vegas and we typically get less than 4" per year.

      @@kegawinek7628 worth a shot. I would also squirt some caulk in each hole before inserting bolts and caulk the top side of the deck to the stucco.

    How can I find the rim joist if I'm attatching to a 2 story house?

    • @jiggidaboo
      @jiggidaboo  4 роки тому

      You may need to cut a small hole in the ceiling inside your house and measure the height to the floor or to the bottom of the nearest window then apply the same measurerement outside. Chalk a line on the outside showing where the rim joist is.

    If a person has to attach to 2x4s
    1. Link to a stud finder that works through stucco, please.
    2. A half inch bolt hole through a 1.5 inch wide piece of wood seems to be risky, no?

    • @andrewg3454
      @andrewg3454 3 роки тому

      Obviously the bolt there is longer than a half inch, I heard him say 5' and it looked like 5'. No one is that silly. As for the stud finder I never use them personally but if I know the area that is going to be covered I could always drill a test hole to see if a stud is found, then go 16' from there, but double checking to make sure its catching them all as you go. Patch the holes after with caulking or something.

      The 2x4 ribbon which the floor truss connect to is on edge. There is 3½" horizontally along the entirety of the house side to side and then foor trusses with 3½" vertically probably 18" tall and likely 16oc or 19²/¹⁰oc and also double 2x6 wall plate above and below the floor truss.
