Onyx Kaleido 3 with GOOGLE PLAY | Boox Tab Mini C Review

  • Onyx never seems to disappoint. This unit is one of the most capable and portable color e-paper devices on the market. Kaleido 3, 300 PPI and a whopping 5,000 mAh battery. You even get a Pen Plus in the box, although it would have been nice to have a Pen 2 Pro with the eraser. Google Play is front and centre ready to go, and there's really no shortcomings aside from it not having an SD card, and editing PDF files.
    The Tab Mini C is designed for two things, consuming content and creating content. You can draw, edit and doodle. You can read ebooks, manga or webtoons in full color, either with Android apps or sideloading your own. You can listen to audiobooks, podcasts or music, which is an added bonus. I like being able to sign PDF files with a stylus, such as contracts or tax forms.

    The lack of SD slot and limited built in memory means this is a pass for me. I also find it ironic that a review by e-reader puts the book/comic abilities second to raving about the note taking.

      @wernerarts yes but that forces me to carry around an external storage accessory which can be easily lost or forgotten, something built into the device is a lot more convenient letting me just grab my reader as I'm leaving the house without the hassle. It is also possible for me to access my Google drive but again it has the problems of connecting to WiFi when I'm out and the size of my downloads. My photography magazine I subscribe to is normal 600mb to 800mb for example.

    Hello, sorry to bother you. I have a paper white from 2010. I would like to know if for reading native PDF files you can make the font larger or you are stuck like in the kindle. Also I would only read pdfs and kindle books, should I get just a boox e reader instead of a colour one?
    Thank you for your advice it is very much needed.

    I received my Mini C yesterday, which will be an upgrade from my Nova Air2. I’m not quite to the point where I can compare speeds and the display experience, but I do have a couple of quick observations.
    -- I like the Mini C’s more Android-ish interface. It seems more natural to me, based on my Android phone and Android tablets. The color, though not vibrant, does make the app icons a little more friendly. Because of the reader and note-taking focus of these products, I think the Mini C’s balance of Android and BOOX commands is a good compromise and much better than the version on the Nova Air2 (and similar B&W models of that vintage).
    -- The color also seems to give an overall better user experience. Going from 100 dpi to 150 dpi in color helps. With the news apps (I read several of them) the muddy B&W interfaces were sometimes a bit of a pain.
    -- As other reviews have mentioned, the case is surprisingly good. One thing to note is that the box for the case is labeled “BOOX Tab Mini Series”, which I can only take to mean that we should see a B&W replacement for the Nova Air2 soon. I’ll still be looking for a third-party case, since I like having a hand strap when reading, and also like an elastic stylus loop - my favorite BOOX Stylus is the (non-magnetic) triangular with eraser. (I also ordered the pro stylus - belt and suspenders.)
    -- One thing I noticed in CPU-Z (downloaded from the Google App Store) is that on the Device screen, it shows the model as the TabMiniC (BOOX), but lists the screen size as 10.32 inches and the Screen Density as 226 ppi. The SOC data is exactly the same for both the Nova Air2 and the Mini C.

      How is the black and white content ? I don't need the kindle white, but something that's not too dark to need to have the lights on the device on all the time

    • @Gallery90
      @Gallery90 9 місяців тому +3

      @@kat.inthesky I'm fine with it. The Mini C replaces the Kindle Page White. You have controls for both the overall brightness of the screen and the color temperature. I've been reading books like crazy lately, often with the Mini C on the dining room table (bright room lighting) while I eat, but I also use it in the living room (more subdued) and sometimes in bed (dim lighting).
      However, compared side-by-side with a Kindle Page White with the lighting turned off, the Mini C page is darker. I don't have something to make a direct comparison, but it generally, the Mini C at mid-setting for brightness is about the same as the Kindle with the lights off. I have not found this as a problem and I run the Mini C at about 75% brightness and the color temp somewhere around the mid-point.

    • @DanielKravetz
      @DanielKravetz 9 місяців тому

      If you'd be so kind, I have a few questions, I'm looking to buy either the Air2 or the Mini C... Is the writing feel of the display different between the air2 and the mini c? When reading using the front light, how is the battery usage with the mini? Would you say that the Mini is overall better (ignoring the price difference)? Do you use any screen protector/paper-ish gizmo?

    • @Gallery90
      @Gallery90 9 місяців тому +1

      @@DanielKravetz I haven't done that much note taking with the Mini C, but my initial impressions are that they are about the same.
      I'm happy with the battery life. Probably not as good as a current Kindle PaperWhite, but I'll go a week -- generally read with Mini C on a book easel whilst eating breakfast, lunch and dinner.
      No screen protector.
      The biggest advantage of the Mini C over the Air2 is the combination of color and a more Android-ish interface. Combined with the color, it just makes for a better user experience. (I have and Android phone and two Android tablets)
      One thing I haven't tested yes it how the screen renders PDFs. I don't know if a document is rendered differently in B&W vs color.

    Maybe I'm missing something catastrophically important like a super advanced alien tech in the form of a color E-Ink.
