NYC's BEST BAGEL & Coffee! Better Than Ess-A-Bagel

- When it comes to the best bagel in NYC, everyone knows all about Ess-A-Bagel. Others will say Absolute Bagel, Russ & Daughters, or even Forest Hills Bagels. But what if I told you that New York's best bagel was Best Bagel? No you didn't read that incorrectly, the best bagel in New York City in my mind is Best Bagel & Coffee, located at 35th street and 7th ave. This isn't another restaurant in the vein of the movie Elf, where it's a generic bagel with an equally generic name. What's even more suspicious is this place is also in a very touristy location, being just a block away from the Empire State Building and Herald Square Macy's. Despite all this, Best Bagel and Coffee backs up its name and is, in my mind, the best bagel in Manhattan and the best bagel in New York! While many people will go for a bagel and lox sandwich, or a bagel egg sandwich, the star at Best Bagel & Coffee (or any NYC bagel shop in my mind) is to just get a flavored bagel with cream cheese. My favorites here are blueberry bagel with blueberry cream cheese, garlic bagel with garlic cream cheese, and toasted onion bagel with scallion cream cheese. Of all NYC deli foods, especially NYC cheap eats and NYC cheap foods, the bagel is one of my favorites. It is the ultimate New York breakfast and the bagel is the most portable of all of them. If you're a tourist you can't leave NYC until you have a NYC bagel, and if you're a local you have to head to Midtown Manhattan and check out Best Bagel and Coffee, one of the best restaurants in New York for breakfast and one of the best cheap eats in New York City!

Tip from a pro bagel eater. If you do a savory bagel, do a sweet cream cheese. If you do a sweet bagel, do a savory cream cheese. The goal is to balance the flavors.

You can also add free chives to your cream cheese if you have a backyard that grows natural onion grass.
Hi. Not sure about the blueberry bagel because I only eat the everything bagel. I never put in a sweet cream cheese. Please google. Many people agree savory is a great option.

You ought try the Za'atar bagels at Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe on Vanderbilt. Very good stuff. Also Shelsky's on Court street for smoked fish

It would be nice to see you do some videos is Philly. Not even for cheesesteak reviews(in my opinion overdone) but for some local markets that offer some unique things. Specifically some Amish farmers markets that have some great local eats. I’m in Delco, a county right outside of Philadelphia and there is a famous market not far from me that delivers in terms of atmosphere, people, food, and the origins of the Amish that first started. Booths Corner is the name. At least half of the businesses are run by the Amish who usually arrive in large vans in the wee morning hours (Amish can’t drive motor vehicles but can travel in them with a driver.) if you’ve never had SCRAPPLE, then this is the perfect place to try the greatest breakfast meat the world has ever known!
Yes good idea! I definitely want to do a Philly video soon. To be honest I probably will start with a cheesesteak video since that's what they are most known for but I definitely want to introduce non cheesesteak foods in Philly too!
If you do, go for the Barclay prime cheesesteak and champagne one but I’m not sure about their film policy.

I would think a blueberry bagel with blueberry cream cheese would be a LOT of blueberry/sweet flavor - maybe next time try a blueberry bagel (if you like those) with a plain cream cheese or the scallion cream cheese. I have actually never been to this place and I prefer Ess-A-Bagel in general but this sounds great - your reviews are always very comprehensive!

The rule about toasting bagels should be: When the bagels are fresh, you eat them untoasted, but if you still have any the next day, then toast them then. The only exception is when you are getting a hot breakfast sandwich. In that case, a toasted bagel will be better for the sandwich.

I grew up in NYC and I'm probably in the minority of people who don't have a such strong opinion on how to eat bagels and what spread is "appropriate". Do what you like and don't waste food because you feel pressured to eat like others. If a bagel is fresh then it doesn't need toasting, but if I have leftover bagels from the day before then i feel like it needs to be toasted when I'm at home. I personally like anything crunchy.

I'll have to give it a try. One important thing to know about the NY bagel scene is the difference between Ess-a-bagel locations. the 1st Avenue location is my pick for the best bagel in the city, followed by Utopia in Queens. Absolute has the best cream cheeses and many friends like their bagels the best, not me. Ess-a-bagel's owners split up several years back, one having the 1st avenue location and the other opening the 3rd ave location and then the 32nd street location, inferior to 1st ave in my book.
Been enjoying a lot of your videos, love the channel. I would like to make a comment on your thumbnails, to hopefully help you improve your channel overall!
They are a little bit hard to scan, there's a lot of writing in 1 small place. Some have the pictures with the business names already on it, then you add the business name title on top of it, then added blocks with info on it. Some titles are slanted, have different typefaces and colors. It's a lot to take in and requires some effort to understand fully what the video is about.
I definitely recommend the "less is more" approach. There are thankfully a ton of good videos and articles out there that explain how to improve a thumbnail. But yeah, just some feedback based on my personal experience going through your channel.

There is a town in NJ called haledon, they have the fluffiest bagels I've ever had.

Tal is # 1 and Ess-a-bagel # 2 both on 1st ave around 18th street
I'm glad to see someone reppin this place. As much as I don't want the lines to get longer (it always moves quick though tbh) it's embarrassing how the IG and YT echo-chambers direct everyone to Russ or Tompkins Sq (no shade to them) while this place hides out on a side street and just churns out amazing food

I guarantee this is the best place for bagel in New York. I can't eat somewhere else after you try bagel at this shop. High recommend " smoked salmon cream cheese bagel " it is heavenly delicious!!! Actually they are great everything. Service is fast even the line is very long. And Korean family owns this shop. We used to talk to son and he is very nice guy.
Yeah! I love this place. People often overlook it because of its name and location but it is my favorite bagel in the whole city

hello ua, thank you for the stream - it was looking like a nice location on 35th street near 8th ave - usually near there my place to go from anywhere i am coming from even to the 34th street amc theater - sitting in the mcd's on 8th ave. the blueberry is great for a sweet bagel. you look really bundled up near thanksgiving then with the shopper crowd. elle for philly plain

Never been to New York - I wonder why they don’t like toasting their bagels…?
The New Yorker bagel purist rationale is that bagels are already baked to make them crispy and hard, so by toasting them you're supposedly overdoing it. Still, this is just a view that a minority of dogmatic bagel eaters hold. Every bagel shop in NYC will ask every customer if they want it toasted, so it really truly is 100% personal preference. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Are bagels bad when they’re toasted? Is it because you can’t appreciate the way the bagels are made (the chewy texture etc)? My bagel place automatically doesn’t toast the bagel either..
Yeah I think the argument against toasting them is that it makes the bagels less chewy and also bagels are already baked so you're sorta overcooking it. I like them toasted though and, despite what very opinionated bagel people say, loads of people in NYC get them toasted.

I haven't had Russ and Daughers in a long time. I remember liking them then but I may need to try them again sometime. Ess A Bagel is good. Absolute and Best Bagel are good too. Totally up to preference imo!

Dunkin Donuts is good. Sometimes your local gas station will have good breakfast sandwiches too depending on which state you’re in
Never had a Dunkin employee lecture me when I order a large coffee, lots and lots of sugar, lots and lots of cream. Not only that, they've never messed the order up.
Now Starbucks on the other hand? Great bathrooms if you really, really need to poop.
@@jamesbael6255 I disagree about Starbucks bathrooms. Starbucks is usually very busy with lots of customers so the bathroom are used a lot. As a result the bathrooms will commonly have that lingering smell if you know what I mean
I like Dunkin Donuts coffee! Now I'm not saying it's my favorite coffee or it's the best coffee ever, but it's decent and I still prefer it to a lot of non-chain store coffees. Also here I was just saying I thought Best Bagel coffee was worse than Dunkin Donuts, to clarify I wasn't saying Dunkin Donuts was the gold standard.
