The game takes place within the larger #BattleTech universe. In MechWarrior: Online, players takes the role of a ""MechWarrior"" who pilots large bipedal combat vehicles known as BattleMechs (Mech for short). Players can customize their BattleMech with an array of weapons and equipment, and engage in 12 versus 12 battles, the outcome of which earns the players experience and c-bills for future BattleMech purchases and customization. There are currently seven game modes that involve protecting and attacking a single base (Assault), capturing and holding several points (Conquest), take and hold the center of the map (Domination), attacking a space defense system (Siege/Counter-Attack), protecting and attacking field bases with turrets and walls spread across the map (Incursion), and team death-match (Skirmish).

    One potential benefit of x-pulses I haven't seen someone mention is that you can easily swap between targets and just continue shooting as people swap in and out of cover.
    With cooldown reliant weapons you sometimes don't get to get off that second shot fast enough to take full advantage of their exposure time.
    With x-pulses you can capitalize on every second of exposure as long as you have the heat. Even just 1-2 shots on people running across the screen adds up over time.
    The second match had multiple instances where this happened, where you would have been unable to shoot due to being in cooldown when the opportunity presented itself.
    Considering this and the longer range, I have no doubt you probably would have done much worse with regular pulses in that second match.

      On the contrary if you see an enemy dart out of cover you can't capitalize on their expose time with XPLs. With other weapons you dump the alpha and it doesn't matter if they duck back in cover. With XPLs your damage output relies on the fact that they expose and remain exposed, that you expose and remain exposed

      Benefit of Xpulse is, you can do tremendous dps in short bursts (its far far better than LPL in this regard) AND you decide before anybody when to retreat into cover. Since its gradual heat build up, overheating is the easiest thing to manage in this thing. I no longer underestimate these things. Its 10 damage per shot, every half second. And thats without any cooldown or laser duration bonuses (which increases its overall dps significantly unlike other lasers, since cd is 0.25 and it doesnt start before laser stops firing, which duration is 0.25 seconds by default too)

      Your XLPL damage needs about 4 seconds of continuous face time to overtake LPL in damage done over time on target. PPFLD is a lot stronger in shorter engagements. XLPL gets stronger when you have a longer time to shoot the enemy (like RACs), but unlike RACs, the heat generated is so high that you can rarely shoot longer than 5-6 seconds straight, thus almost negating the effect of the higher damage over time XLPL offer. That's why I have been calling for a XPL heat reduction of 15-20% for the past months.

      @@TTBprime By my math, you need five LXPL shots to overtake a LPL, which you can get out in 2.5s (2.25s if you don't count the final cooldown) before skills/quirks.

      @@foamyesque Yes, but remember the LPL shoots again at 3ish seconds, which puts LXPL behind again.

    What i like about the X-Pulse: The steady amount of heat they generate, instead of the big amounts of heat the firing of another type of laser produces, you can slowly get to the heat limits without overheating or cooking yourself. And what i also like, you can use the 4 Laser Duration skill points and the Cooldown skill points to make the X-Pulse lasers literally laser machine guns. Especially if you put them in a mech which already has the right quirks. I had really astonishing results for example with one of the Locust variants with just one single Large XP as weapon. And such a mech is a the ultimate annoyance for the enemy.

    That second match in particular was almost Zen-like. You were really on it. The damage numbers for everyone that match were relatively low, but your damage was critical there as it pinned 3-4 high damage/high-alpha mechs while your team slowly moved into position and annihilated them piecemeal. You pinning their center like that was a big deal honestly. GG TTB!

    Few things irk me more then useless jumpjets.
    If I had this build I would probably drop the JJ for extra heatsinks or something.

    Now just need a video with 4 standard LPL to see how it performs. Having to get closer might be an issue.

      I tested this on testing grounds with 4 LPLs compared to 4 xLPLs: the difference is about 1-1.5 seconds of shooting the CT of a cataphract with the xLPLs being faster. The total time of shooting the XLPLs was about 6 seconds I believe and the heat was better.

      its more than 60% more dps, but its damage per heat is same. So you'll deal far more damage during each of your engagements but reach heat cap faster, just need to be careful about return fire. Most efficient way would be fire on them until they fire, and as they retreat back, and you only return to cover when their cooldown is about to be ready again. So essentially you & your target both play around your opponents CD.

    I want to love X-Pulses, I really do… but RACs are better in pretty much every conceivable way: way less heat, more DPS per gun, better range (I think…?), etc.
    Literally the only thing X-Pulses have going for them is that they don’t need ammo. That’s it.

      Spin up time on RACs is a disadvantage over X-Pulses.

      It's actually bonkers with ECM in QP. 4LXPL pumps out insane DPS

      @@stephentriol369Sure, but you can still get better DPS with a pair of RAC-5s on a lighter platform (i.e. the Bushwhacker)…
