  • LYRICS:
    Isn't it rich?
    Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
    You in mid-air..
    Where are the clowns?
    Isn't it bliss?
    Don't you approve?
    One who keeps tearing around,
    One who can't move...
    Where are the clowns?
    Send in the clowns.
Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours.
Making my entrance again with my usual flair
    Sure of my lines...
    No one is there.
    Don't you love a farce?
    My fault, I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want...
    Sorry, my dear!
    But where are the clowns
Quick - Send in the clowns
    Don't bother, they're here.
    Isn't it rich?
    Isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late in my career.
    But where are the clowns?
    There ought to be clowns...
    Well, maybe next year.

What a heavenly version of this song. I was so glad to see Judy have a hit with this song two years in a row. A perfect blend of voice and orchestration. Makes me miss the days when popular singers were people who could really sing.

I am of the age when Judy Collins was first releasing folk music, this song and "Both Sides Now" are my favorites. The young lady below, Ms. Sivapriya really summarized well what this song was all about, too bad the other writers did not listen well to what Ms. Collins was singing about in this beautiful folk song. Has nothing to do with today's insane issues, this was a 60's folk song. A real tribute to a Colorado raised Lady, Ms. Collins has always been one of my favorites, along with Joan Baez of course.

judie's lovely rendition is enhanced by the placement of that haunting sound of an, english horn, and it sets a mood before she starts to sing; then again just before the last refrain... this is just a beautiful experience, and draws tears with each playing... great listening !!!! thank you, bedford joe

An audience recognizing an ageless, beautiful woman with an ageless, beautiful voice singing an ageless, beautiful song.. Can't type so well for the tears in my eyes. She makes the world a better place just by doing her best. No life could ever hope to be more fulfilled.--Tom Reilly

Saw Judy tonight in Wimborne (UK) in the art deco Tivoli theatre. She was wonderful and her version of this was magnificent. How, at 80, does she manage to sing so well and move so many people? You could have heard a pin drop in there tonight. Speechless!

Was forced to learn this on piano as a child in the '70's. Had no idea of the beauty and breadth of this song as my mother watched over me. She's gone now, as is any piano knowledge I had back then, but, this song, this version, will always be in my heart and memory.

She looks (inside and out) amazing! Not many artists/songs affect with spirit.... and certainly not these days so....it's nice to go into the way-back machine from time to time. Musicians now-a-days don't possess the passion for words like they used to. They're more about the beat and melody.

This may just be THE heartsick love song of all time. Few melodies and lyrics express the feeling of deep, passionate love the way this song does. If Tchaikovsky, the Grand Master of love music, came back to life, even he would wish that he had written it, so enthralled and smitten with it would he be. It is that good.

This song was a construct. A design or a pyramid of a song. It hails to an era long gone and living only in the hearts of those lucky enough to experience a particular time in musical history. Out of so much madness came tranquil moments of the most lucid conversations with the soul.

A classic, beautiful song, immortalized IMHO by Judy Collins. A song of heartbreak and irony, and love. Selectively, the lyrics could be applied in 2013 to the U.S Affordable Health Care Act and the comedy/tragedy surrounding it. "Don't you love farce? My fault, I fear. I thought that you'd want what I want... Sorry, my dear! And where are the clowns, Send in the clowns, Don't bother, they're here."

Sondheim himself has explained the meaning of the title:
"I get a lot of letters over the years asking what the title means and what the song's about; I never thought it would be in any way esoteric. I wanted to use theatrical imagery in the song, because she's an actress, but it's not supposed to be a circus It's a theater reference meaning "if the show isn't going well, let's send in the clowns"; in other words, "let's do the jokes." I always want to know, when I'm writing a song, what the end is going to be, so "Send in the Clowns" didn't settle in until I got the notion, "Don't bother, they're here", which means that "We are the fools."
As I think of it now, the song could have been called "Send in the Fools". I knew I was writing a song in which Desirée is saying, "aren't we foolish" or "aren't we fools?" Well, a synonym for fools is clowns, but "Send in the Fools" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Stephan Sondheim out sis himself with this song. God, this is so beautiful. The play which this song was written for is incredible A Little Night Music. But it's the words that are rich with memories for anyone who thinks he/she may of made some wrong choices.
