- Sony seems to keep making the wrong moves in trying to enact their live service strategy. From Factions 2 being cancelled, to Helldivers bungling and now displaying games like Concord and Fairgames which seem to be very generic. Let's discuss what has gone wrong and how they should be doing things differently.

@@mapuggs Really not a fan of capeshit in general, but it seems foolish to cancel it, knowing how well that stuff sells. I'm just still salty over factions being cancelled. My PS5 has basically been a tlou machine that doubles as a paperweight, and I was putting all of my hope into that game.
Tlou online was cancelled as Naughty Dog would have had to shift to a live service studio only to support the game, meaning no more ratchet and clank, uncharted or TLOU story games, which they’re best known for - we’ve seen what’s happened with studios known for single player games (rocksteady) making live service so I think it was the best decision

I agree with everything you've said but just to correct something:
The Rachet and clank games are not naughty dog's.
They're Insomniac's(they've also made the last spiderman games).

Helldivers was actively hurt by Bungie's strategy.

@PunishedCoyote not really but ok? How so? Arrowhead has said that that hurt so bad they'll never bounce back from it. They didn't do it. It changed NOTHING. They lost. Now still to this day they're running victory laps like they manhandled Sony when Sony manhandled them while they screwed over their favorite game maker for someone else's transgressions. So yeah. I’ve worked with Japanese clients before. Their highly hierarchical structure usually means old and out of touch managers make unilateral decisions that the younger engineers know won’t work well, but cannot challenge. Honestly it’s baffling to me how such companies even survive, let alone thrive.
also these mobile clone games like concord they keep showing are the types of games that end up HUGE in Asian markets, predatory and extremely grindey and expensive monetisation systems are also the normal there and hit with that region particularly.
I am still just so disappointed in the cancelation of Factions 2. I bought a PS5 at launch and held off on picking up a Series X until later specifically because I thought the game was coming
At this point I've built a PC and find myself regularly playing games on it rather than playing games on my PS5. All my Factions friends have gone their separate ways, and we rarely get together anymore
It really does feel like the end of an era :(
Helldivers works because it was made as an immersive love letter to the best sci fi franchises that people actually love
Concord is a fucking corporate slop game with no soul no love nothing
Ghost of tsushima and uncharted 4 multiplayer was amazing and they came with amazing singleplayer games FOR FREE

Great video, man! Seems to unfortunately be an industry-wide thing at the moment where innovative approaches to high-budget games are just not being greenlit anymore. Huge shame and I hope that they'll reconsider a sequel to factions one day.

Great deduction and insight Poop. I think you're spot-on with how things played out re: Naughty Dog having worked on a clear vision for Factions 2 (for YEARS) only to have Bungie make impossible demands at the 12 hour. They seemed genuinely gutted by its cancellation, but were clearly having to tow the company line and not offend Sony/Bungie by parking the blame with them (where it belongs). Here's hoping they'll come to their senses and bring some version of the Last Of Us mulitplayer back
a couple of thoughts from me johncoltrane69. I don't know if its age or what but NOTHING appeals at all. Ok, Alan Wake 2 does, but i can't justify a PS5 purchase as things stand. Games just seem generic and aimed at teenagers. Still can't believe that Factions 2 was just cancelled and not just scaled back. It still doesn't make any sense.
You were right. Jesus they cancelled factions for this. I blame Sony and Bungie, what a joke.
At this rate we probably won’t see a course correction until the end of the ps5. Both Xbox and Sony have put out maybe the weakest generation we have nothing new jaw dropping or defining that you couldn’t fathom on previous generations. Sony doing live service, Xbox buying shit and doing nothing with it. At this point Nintendo needs to come with it. I have no faith that ps5/series x is going to improve and I wouldn’t be surprised that we are looking at reveals for the next next gen consoles in 3 years or less to wipe the slate.
I'm glad Sony don't know what they're doing and these games are probably going to crash. It might show them that they are best at single player blockbuster type games, which is all I care about.

Stop making online only games and go back to making great single player games gow and gowr are still the best games iv played yet if sony just stick with single player games then thats how theyre going to improve if its not broken then dont fix it
singleplayer games make like 2% of what a successful live service game can make in its lifetime

I want factions but I'm not going to write off a PvP Hero Shooter by the most minted and successful Publsiher in PlayStation. This is a game they bought the studio for. They investing in. In a time where there are no hero shooters on PS5. Just Apex (not an arean shooter) and Overwatch 2 which is notiroously fumbled and in the dumps. A perfect oppurtuniy for Concord imo. Especailly if the dodge mechanics acts how i think, destiny gunplay, variety in mechanics. weekly cinematics, roatotion of gmaemodes and the character screen implies variant loadouts for heros, Unprecedented to have some kind of character building in a game like this. So, I'm open minded. It could be trash but I have no reson to write it off. HD2 was written off. Live sercice doesn't make it bad and looking like GotG and Overwatch doesn't ether. Gameplay is king, I'll judge it then. I hope it doesn't suck and it'll be awful if it does but.. I just can't see it. We'll find out next month! Glad tyo have some varitety though, still.. TLOU Online shoulda been apssedto a new studio not abandoned. So sad. Arc Radiers and Taht mintrocket game need to save us
idk man concord have that paragon style 3d that looks bland (without soul). Overwatch still is a strong competitor and Marvel Overwatch game is coming soon too. Sony doesn't have a good history on online games to be fair. Ghost of tsushima legends for example is a prime example, the art and combat mechanics of the main game is NUTS, and the online is bad.
Another mistake is enforcing psn accounts on other platforms like PC when they don't need it, unless they start really making good PC games (like factions 2). FPS games on console is kinda janky and fast paced ones like concord will show the restrictions on controllers. Might be a pink money cash grab and die out super soon sadly

Bungie’s opinion should be irrelevant to Naughty Dogs games because they’re not even the same genre. Allowing Bungie to come in and call the shots on something not even remotely related to them is wild. On another note, if PlayStation cared about their fan base they would start banning cheaters starting with Faction MP.
You have to think of it like venture capital as long as one live service makes it big it pays for all the other failures. It’s why they invested in 10 live service games it may look foolish on paper but they do have a plan
I agree with almost all of this video, and I love your stuff, but calling Horizon games "endless" feels disingenuous. There've been two main releases, and one VR game.
It's fine if you don't like them, but that was just a little thing that really bothered me idk. Again, great video, you did open my eyes to some stuff I didn't know about
It’s not so much too many games are out now but there is Horizon 3, horizon lego, and 2 Horizon multiplayers in the works. Not to mention a potential horizon remake. I like horizon but all that is too much imo and it feels like that ip is getting some favoritism while others are getting their games cancelled

yeah, but the problem is ... Fortnite has story. The characters - if only loosely but - has story. I remember when one of the DC seasons came out. The Fortnite bad guy corpos met with Batman... IN THE COMICS! How awesome is that? Sony will never be able to pull out a trump card like that...
