I loved this lady in the 60’s, I loved this lady lady in the 70’s, I loved this lady in the 80’s, I loved this lady in the 90’s, I’ve loved this lady through the century we are now in, I will love her long after I’m gone from this earth. I will spread her love throughout the universe!
I'm 62 and love Grace Slick! I've listened to all the albums.
This woman is probably the true groundbreaking female rock'n'roller'.
I had friends that knew Grace. They said she was funny, and crazy, a joy to be around! Anything for a laugh!
She was all of that and more. I was there. Amazing times
I remember this episode! Grace was always fun as hell and had (still has?) a wicked sense of humor! Thanks for the memories and great music you left us Grace!
Grace is still alive! Going on 85!!
Grace is Somebody To Love.❤❤
Letterman was must see back in the day. Fun, funny, snarky, smart. You don't know what you got till it's gone.
the best female rock singer in history
I AGREE!
There's Debbie Harry from Blondie, Ann Wilson of Heart, Stevie Nicks and Chrsitine McVie from Fleetwood Mac. All are great singers.
she was ranked #4
❤Truth.
Grace used to sing on the jazzy spies cartoons that featured on Sesame Street back when the program debuted in 1969.
Not only was she probably the best female rock voice, she was always one helluva of an interview.
She was an arrogant over-rated egotist. Her bandmates hated her guts. With good reason. Maybe she mellowed with age.
@@robertlivingstone442 I dont think she ever did 😄
I think Ann Wilson blows her away but Slick does have a great rock voice.
My thoughts exactly she can't come close to Ann's pipes.@@j.alexander4948
Grace Slick wasn't only a great singer, but, even pretty decent comedian
Grace Slick is for real, not a fake and a great singer.
She's so great. Love Grace!
Grace Slick is a great personality.
She's always been Grace Slick when interviewed. Never know what she'll go off on. Rock Star.
Charlton Heston used the "not blowing my skirt up" line in True Lies 7 years after this appearance. This appearance was 6 months after the movie Mannequin came out and Grace and Starship had a #1 hit with the theme song "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."
Grace was a true classic. One of a kind.
‘IS’ … a true classic
Spitfire/Red Octopus are great albums. I love her voice talking and singing.
Spitfire -- Great cover! And... St. Charles!
Agreed! 'Spitfire', imho, is one of the greatest of 70's albums! Have always had a soft spot for the beautiful "St.Charles" and Slicks "Switchblade". The great cover art by Shusei Nagoka is without equal. I could sit and stare @ it for hours, as it ties-in w/the music so perfectly! 🔥🐲🐉
Love White Rabbit , and many more . I havent seen her much on shows , this was a great clip. Looks a little nervous , but shows her great sense of humor.
Grace is still among us 😊
You wouldn't recognize her.
@@mrschuylersays he who has a dog for his profile instead of his own face.
I like how Grace credits phrase friends.
Jack took me in with him twice at the Fillmore East when we poor boys were begging for spare tickets outside. Righteous dude!
cool story. what year was that?
@@wesleyrhoten8505 late 60's --early 70;s Can't pin it down further than that. If I could remember the first song they played (as I can with s few other shows such as the Dead) I could find a playlist and nail the date..
First thing I have to do before watching the video is check the comment section to make sure she is still alive.
You must be living under a rock or you're under 25 years old
This is when late nite TV was worth watching. David was a great interviewer and had the best guests. The present day people cannot come close. Does anyone remember Tom Snyder? A fantastic talk show host. I'm showing my age. These young people are jerks. Where's my lunch?
Guess I'll show my age too 'cause I remember and enjoyed Tom Snyder, loved Dave, loved when he threw watermelons out on the street from top of the building, and when he interviewed his neighboring store owners. Hate and do Not watch Anyone's Tonite show Today!
Man she could sing
Grace could write,sing, and Perform!!! M O'B
Letterman was the king of 80-90s late nite.
4:11 "Oooh boy, here we go!!! I'm back at the Fillmore!"
Growing up in South San Francisco during 60's, I had a Major Crush on Grace Slick❤!
She was smokin'
Wow, the 80s hair.
Im sitting in a casino hotel watching this while they are selling tickets for Jefferson Starship down stairs.
the fountain was like an acid flashback, eh Grace
What a good segment.
Her daughter is now 53. Grace is now 84.
Thanks for depressing me!!! Ugh!!!! I'm soooo old!!!
I wonder if she puts cream on her elbows now 😆
Wow, time passes.
Grace was already nearly 30 years old when Jefferson Airplane played Woodstock in 1969. She was amazing back then. Grace and Janis were the first two great female rockers, though Joplin was actually a blues singer.
Things got tougher for Grace in the late 1970s through the 1980s. The pressure of being an aging rocker trying to keep up in a business that favors the young affected her ..as did her band changing into something unrecognizable from what it was when it began 20+ years earlier. Hip & idealistic San Francisco psychedelic band turned into an 80s corporate rock act by its management and record company…with Grace the only remaining original member.
She didn’t handle any of this well. Fortunately she sobered up and finally followed the advice she’d given an earlier interview: “All rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire."
Grace Slick was incredible during the 1960s and early 1970s. Many great female rock singers have pointed to Stevie Nicks as an influence. Stevie points to Grace as an influence. Imho Grace Slick should be put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a second time, this time by herself and getting a Musical Influence award.
Is Grace still pretty sexy today at 84? I bet she's aged like a fine wine.
Feed your head. Feed your head.
Ahh! To travel back in time!
LOL!! Letterman, what a fringing goofball!
When I was entering puberty, Grace was doing something to me from afar.
Grace is so cool!!!!!
Grace was the hottest thing to come out of the 60's.
Does anyone remember the musical comedian, Martin Mull? Well word has it that during one of Martin's performances back in the day, Grace gave Martin a "gift" right in the middle of his act. A lesson in oral hygiene. Heard this from many sources. My kind of woman.
raquel welch was better.
Grace looks very intense and intimidating but she's actually quite charming.
The "Thing" she was looking and asking about was called at 1 time, "The Dancing Waters".
Dave was threatened with lawsuits by someone who had the name copyrighted. Dave had to
call it something else.
If I remember correctly, it became the "Prancing Fluids"
@@bobcunningham9469 YES !!! I was trying to remember but, this long ago. thnx
@@bobcunningham9469 Weird. I only remember the original name.
Don’t know if anybody else has heard this story. Apparently, back in the days when Grace fronted the original Jefferson Airplane, she used to wear one contact lens with a blackened star shape in/on it. It looked like her pupil was just a complete black star. Not sure if she’s short - sighted and had a clear contact lens for the other eye also. Grace Slick was/is one of the first “rock chicks”! I did read somewhere that Grace had a brother - in - law called Darby Slick who founded the band Great Society.
She was in Great Society. It was her, her husband Jerry, his brother Darby and Peter Van Gelder (who is my father). They were the first band to play White Rabbit (written by Grace) and Somebody to Love (written by Darby). The band broke up when she left to join Jefferson Airplane because their lead singer quit after she had a baby.
She is an icon
THE legend of legends. THE one and only maverick queen of rock! 🎤🎸🎼🎵🎶🌉✈️🚀🐇🐼
See those fierce eyes...in many pictures.
"Blow your skirt up" is a term that means doing something you're excited about. ✨️✌️
"Winds of Change"
Go Ask Alice ..
I think she'll know.....
@@tigrismask8450 . . . and the White Knight is talking backwards . . .
Remember that solid white outfit that she wore at Woodstock without getting mud on it.
she is so funny
Grace is the Queen of Rock. Linda Ronstadt is the princess of Rock !!!
Linda, who was indeed blessed with great pipes, was interpreter and more Pop than Rock. I would say Ann Wilson would be more of a princess of Rock than Linda but, as they say, to each their own..
@@duffbaker9554 WELL LIKE , THATS JUST LIKE YOUR OPINION MAN ?
Beautiful woman, great singer, and not one to be trifled with.
Also invited H. Angels to Altamont! Brilliant?
Upon her suggestion. She had used them before and suggested it to them and the Stones. I could be wrong I will check and get back.@@mrJimCharles
@@culpritcanine6059 Wrong. The Rolling Stones management hired the Hells Angels on recommendation of the Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead.
@@duffbaker9554 According to various sources, including Rolling Stone and other interviews, Grace Slick, the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane, suggested hiring the Hells Angels as security for the Altamont Free Concert in 1969. Slick had previously worked with the Hells Angels at a Jefferson Airplane concert in Golden Gate Park, where they provided security without incident. She believed that the Hells Angels would be able to effectively manage the crowd and keep the peace at Altamont.
Paul Kantner’s Confirmation
In an interview, Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane’s bassist and Slick’s partner, confirmed that Slick had suggested the Hells Angels as security for Altamont. Kantner stated that Slick had mentioned the Hells Angels’ previous experience working with the band and their ability to handle the crowd without incident.
Jagger’s Agreement
According to Slick, she and Jagger discussed the idea of hiring the Hells Angels as security, and Jagger agreed to the suggestion. Slick recalled that Jagger was hesitant at first but eventually agreed, thinking that the Hells Angels would be able to provide a more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere at the concert.
@@duffbaker9554 Sorry. Airplane used them first then suggested it to the Dead. Even in an interview fellow guitar player admits it was mostly Grace's idea!..thanks!
Grace was 48 years old here, and still looked good then.
Damn if I could have guessed late 30. Amazing.
She was a good-looking woman and what a voice!
Grace is no nonsense
Nice entrance, warm handshake. She briefly conducts the band🪄. Dave, give her a kiss on the cheek, she's rocknroll royalty!
Mtv ruled the 80's🎼📺📼. That is a swell light fountain disco holiday season doo-hickey,,,blew my skirt up💃

And shes still hot
Have you seen her lately ?
Umm, yeah.....
Wow, celebs are kooky in real life.
Yes sir
Shes in no way in the same league as Ann Wilson...
Dumb, nonsensical tag line for the video though.
It looks like Maggies Mom with black hair? Right?
How is she handling OLD AGE and...the INEVITABLE?
she's wearing pants
Oh yea, Grace (stumpy) Slick
She sounds like segourny weaver from aliens
Click bait.
Too much acid.
It's people like Grace Slick that make me wish I had a time machine: I would go back to 1979 where the members of Jefferson Starship had just found their classic line-up and subsequently released their landmark album 'Freedom at Point Zero'. And I would have pleaded with them to 1-- Make 10 more albums just like it; and 2--- Not under any circumstances to ever let Grace back into the band. Worst thing they ever did, and it shows on all their '80s albums, especially the horriblation Letterman is holding. Yuck.
Blame the band’s record company not Grace.
Every band at the time was being pressured to have HITS which meant bringing in outside writers the 1980s hits were written by outside writers.
@@jaycareaga9929 I know some of what you're saying is true, but it's also true that a number of top-notch new bands --- such as Cinderella, Poison, Guns'n'Roses, The Go-Gos, and even the renovated AC/DC with new singer Brian Johnson --- had hits with their own songs. But as far as Grace coming back into JS, that was something the members decided. And given her whole track record, especially her recent track record at the time, her return didn't keep them at the level they attained with 'Freedom At Point Zero.' Listen to the song 'Find Your Way Back' from 1980, and tell me if Grace's vocals or video appearance added anything to it. Mickey Thomas could have gotten someone from the audience of an all-night movie to do the backing vocals and no one would have missed Grace at all.
@clarkleach6733 clearly you're not a fan... why are you here?
@@bluzmansb5683 For the same reason I just spent much of December going 15 rounds with AC/DC's 'Bon-Is-Better' crowd: to tell all of you a simple truth that no matter how much you may like one singer over another, that doesn't mean it's true.
Once past the days of Jefferson Airplane, I thought her contributions to JS were minimal at best, and more of a hindrance at worst. Didn't miss her at all on 'Freedom At Point Zero', but after they let her back in the band, I couldn't listen to her at all. I mean, what for instance, did she bring to the song Find Your Way Back? Mickey did almost all of the singing and work, and the band could've easily supplied all the backing vocals. To me, by that time, Grace was just there.
You can tell Grace was not happy with Mickey here.

60s Icon sold out for the 80s shoulder pad for women. And I’m not even gonna mention at length about hairstyles. Or whatever they were back then.
Most of the icons of the 60s sold out big-time in the 80's.

would anyone wear earrings like that these days?

She was so beautiful The original great voice of rock and roll, But she didn't take care of herself she did not age well
:)
She is funny but a little TOO aggressive.
Do strong women scare you 😂
She was always gross to me.
Dug the music, never could stand her.
Trying so hard to be on. Sad.
She lost her good looks very quickly.
Incredibly overrated. She hardly did anything in those bands. I guess she's good at inserting herself into groups of people.
Have you ever heard her sing?????She made the JA.
They sucked in the 60's, came back and sucked harder in the 80's.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You've got to be kidding? You can't be a baby boomer.
There’s just no accounting for some peoples taste, or in this particular case, the lack thereof. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
Hi Mr.Sunshine.
Yes, overhyped and Janis with her slim discography was worse.
