  • Boys Town, Nebraska. A village in the heart of the United States. An organization known throughout the country for it's work providing shelter to homeless, neglected and abused boys (and now girls). A location shadowed by controversy, suspicion, conspiracy and more. What really happened there?
Jesse, Tiny and Gehrt take a drive through this infamous town and share thoughts, feelings and information regarding the dark history that looms over a "safe haven" of sorts that proved to be much less than that.
    UPDATE:
I sat down with a former student and employee of Boys Town to discuss his first hand experiences during his time there. It's a very open, honest and blunt interview.

Boys Town saved my life in 1990-1992. I have never heard any abuse allegations while I was there. Most of us come from crazy abusive situations so if you are driving through a residential school full of hurt children, you will be stared at. We are not in a zoo display for your viewing pleasure.

I'm so glad you had a positive experience at Boys Town! I've spoken with many former students who were not as lucky as you.
Also, in regards to your comment about not being a zoo display for viewing pleasure. I understand where you're coming from but that's never been what this video was ever about. I'm a video creator. I create topical videos that express emotions, feelings, thoughts, etc. Just because we're discussing things in such a way that you may not agree with does not mean we are being intentionally disrespectful. We are simply expressing ourselves.
      Thanks for watching!

I was at Boystown from 1979 through 1981 and they were a model community for troubled children. They had excellent educational opportunities, a horse farm and well kept cottages. I remember living at 344 Franciscan circle and it was a very comfortable and homey environment. They had a fishing pond and taught teens trades that were useful for their future. there was no sexual abuse or exploitation when I was there. The family teachers would take us out on trips, summer camp was a fond memory, Worlds of Fun amusement park was also a fond memory. I don't know what it is like today as I can only attest to how it was when I was there. But word of mouth and making statements with no proof will never be enough to tarnish the name of Boystown or the good I believe it has done for the children and young men and women who were placed there due to troubled family lives.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with Boys Town! I'm glad you had such a positive experience there like so many others like you have had.
I want to reiterate that the point of my video was to provide information, not as gospel, but to be thought provoking and create conversation. I understand the things I share in this are controversial and butt heads with so many experiences of so many people. However, not everyone experienced Boys Town as you did.
I urge you and highly recommend you watch my latest Boys Town video that I released earlier this month. I spoke with a Boys Town alumni (former student and employee) who shares their personal experiences at Boys Town. I assure you that you will find them eye opening.

Of course a giant place like Boystown will do mostly good. But that doesn't negate how it was connected to a nationwide child trafficking network tied to Washington DC, and probably in the same industrialized system that The Finders 1987 scandal was part of.
For a successful front organization to work, it needs the predominant appearance of normalcy and actually to work. KGB illegals deep covers had to have successful business as part of their cover. And just like any covert operation, at scale, it will be compartmentalized so only a few people are aware of and/or involved in the alterior objectives.

Also graduate of Boystown 1977, and concur with some of the other remarks from alumnus, Boystown is a fantastic organization/community. As an alumnus of Boystown it has been a complete honor and privilege to have been a part of this community through its mission goals. The staff, the teachers the house parents the counselors and many of its personnel all dedicated employees for the advancement of the youth. Their program, certainly when I was their, delivered without question the opportunity of hope and life changing benefits absolutely necessary to advance a graduates productive future .They put their money, resources, time, support, training, skill facilities, skills in general, civic involvement as well as recreation and travel opportunities at the forefront. I have nothing but gratitude for the privilege of being a part of this community and the vision of Father Flanagan's outreach to make a difference in the service to, 'the least among us'.
Thank you Boystown for this history and steadfast devotion......

You gotta understand how intelligence operations and secret operations work and are structured.
A successful covert operation has a legitimate front organization/structure to conceal clandestine activities. For example KGB deep covers were required to have successful business running as part of their cover.
      Also, compartmentalization.
Like the Manhattan project, 100,000 of scientists and workers involved, but not knowing what others are doing, and only a handful of higher ups knowing the true goals and project.

@@itsallknee I have watched already......I was personally involved in student government in my tenure at Boystown was our school's Representative as well as one of the editors in the journalism department for the Boystown Pylon and school newspaper from 1976 to the year of my graduation. In that capacity met staff/editorial members at the Omaha World Herold newspaper in an outreach program helping to facilitate this discipline further.
I Had the privilege to meet dignitaries from a host of different countries and cultures from all around the world "mother Theresa" to persons in the entertainment industry, professional sports as well as local politicians. Our particular Cottage had dinner invites from the wife of the mayor of Omaha who had a personal commitment to the success and objectives of the programs at Boystown.
I'm aware of the malfeasance which you eluded to in your video interview with another Boystown alumnus. But will only speak to my own personal experience and participation as a student and school rep interacting with my peers, student body, staff members and people of authority. With one exception, all were as I stated before, incredible people of support committed to their professional and social contributions towards Boystown's success.
And the one exception I refer to was known among the youth for his proclivities and predatorial dispositions and was to be avoided at all cost, we watched each others back!!!
Unfortunately this breach and violation of trust in many of our private and public institutions is rampant across our nation and across the board. The best antidote to these perverse abusers of power, certainly from my perspective, is empowering the youth with this knowledge, personal responsibility and boundaries of accountability.
Needless to say I appreciate your participation in this conversation and would offer only one important suggestion, never approach these inquiries with conjectures, personal feelings or personal vibes as a means of informing your audience which was mentioned when you were driving through the facility. Sensationalizing this topic is not useful to this discussion or inquiry as your audience is more than likely not familiar with Boystown's history, contributions, community structure and Boystown's program altogether, which is broad and multifaceted. Aside from this I encourage you to keep reaching towards excellence in this ever expanding genre of vlogging and information, make it count by enjoying what you do and do what you enjoy with the edification of your viewers in mind.
      Godspeed and much success.....

While I don't doubt there's been corruption and wrong doings I would like to speak into your reaction to being watched. My wife and I worked at facilities like this for almost a decade and I can tell you we had multiple cases where youth were hiding from abusers and many had name changes because of people pursuing them that wanted to hurt them. We were always on guard of unknown vehicles because of the kids' safety. We even had an instance where a car stopped and the driver pulled a gun on a kid who was on his way to the cafeteria. Lots of drug drops that way, too. Again, I want to stress that these places need to be held accountable, but you're exaggerating the wrong part by focusing on how weird it is that people are watching you.

I live in Omaha and I lived just outside of Boys Town for many years. I drove through there all the time, sometimes as a shortcut, sometimes to avoid a traffic jam, and sometimes just while driving to relax, and I was never stared at or followed. My friends and I used to go walk around the pond and feed the geese, as did many people from the surrounding neighborhoods. We were never harassed, asked to leave, anything like that. It just felt like any other neighborhood. Also, I'm sure experiences vary, but I've known a lot of people who were at Boys Town (sometimes for short stays, sometimes for years) and they've always spoken of it positively. I'm sure there were unhappy kids there, kids who never took to it, who had bad housemates, etc. But I've never heard a single word about abuse. Just a lot of stories about people trying to save as many kids as they can. I really think you've done a disservice to them here.

Thank you for commenting and sharing your experience with Boys Town as well as stories you've heard. You are correct in saying that everyone's experiences are different.
I never shy away from the controversy of this video. Nor have I ever claimed to know exactly what happened here. However, through my research and speaking with multiple former students and staff from many different eras of Boys Town, I can assure you that there's far more negativity that has come from BT than most people know about or are willing to acknowledge.
I refuse to discredit or overlook the terrible experiences so many people have had at Boys Town simply because others might view it as a disservice. They deserve to have the truth shared as well regardless of how difficult it may be to listen to or understand.
I'm grateful you had such positive interactions with BT. I hope that never changes. But to claim my video as disservice because you disagree or have never experienced or heard stories from survivors of BT abuse, well, that's just unfair.

I also encourage you to look into the Franklin Scandal from the 80's. I'm directly related to one of the people named in the court cases, so I've done a lot of research on this and believe that Boys Town was, at the time, offering select minors to accompany Lawrence E. King who was involved in atrocious sex crimes against these minors, but wasn't convicted of such due to knowing WAY TOO MUCH about many wealthy and prominent people. That's how are justice system works. If you've been in it, you probably know that already.
Still, I absolutely believe Boys Town was established for the good of minors, but fell into bad hands for a short time. Thousands of lives were undoubtedly restored through the organization, however, I believe a fraction of those lives were lost to unspeakable atrocities. I wonder if any of you folks that flourished in Boys Town knew that the founder was a Roman Catholic Priest or that over 200,000 children were abused by Catholic priests between 1950 and 2020, and that around 80% of the victims were boys.

I know 10 times more about this place than you do or any of these kids that spent a year or two living there with a bias viewpoint. The biggest gripe that these kids had was that they couldn't get drunk, high, have sex, and hang out in risky environments like they did before they came. I also know how whiny a lot of these kids are and how much they like to complain about their situation rather than appreciate the good things in their life. I also know that the kids that tried their best were given every opportunity to succeed even if it took a while. I know that a large percentage of kids made major positive changes to their lives. I know that kids from my home ended up having the opportunity to go to college for free, or trade school, or given free money to join the workforce if that's what was best for them. I know the good work that the kids in my home did when they tried their best and im very proud of them and that's the story I will always tell.

I think you'll see a vast track record of me being extremely supportive and open to ALL people who comment their experiences on any of my Boys Town videos, good and bad.
This has never been about lifting up any one specific stigma over anything else. I'm a content creator, who is always my genuine self on screen, regardless if people approve of my responses to anything I film or not. I'm not trying to impress, change minds, offer up false perspectives or any of the like. I speak in the moment and of the moment. Period.
I've never claimed to know everything about Boys Town. No one I've spoken with ever has either. We all simply speak to our own experiences, long or short, good or bad.
I understand your perspective of coming into the comments section here and trying to find the silver lining in people's negative experiences. I can appreciate that. Truly. As with any text conversation, there is no context of voice or delivery and can cause tensions to rise for no reason.
I'm extremely happy to hear you had a positive experience at Boys Town. As I've mentioned, I've spoken with tons of people in the same boat as you. If you're serious about speaking with me on camera, I'd love to find a time to do so.
Like so many people in this world, we're all looking for answers. That's where this all started from. I wanted to know why BT evoked an emotion within myself and those with me. Upon further research, I wanted to find even more answers. I'm a researcher of all types. I have been for over 20 years.
You can email me jessealne@gmail.com and we can schedule a time to speak about your time there!
Thanks for watching and commenting. That, in itself, means a lot to me! 👊🏼

His Museum faces my house and the Flanagan Family were brought up on a humble farm just outside the village , Fr Flanagan is honoured in our beautiful peaceful kind village, I came here 2 years ago after many years of travel and couldn't believe that there were people so dignified any where in Ireland. I am guessing Fr Flanagan was dead by the time the Rotters took over what he started.
