"On the streets, you don't wish for things. You just wait for them to happen. Because you cannot control really anything", EJ responded trying to think of a second and third wish.
EJ is homeless in Hollywood. He is 18, and when he told me he has been homeless for 11 years, I could not even comprehend to do the math. (I'm a drummer and drummers can't count past 4 anyway)
I cannot even imagine being on the streets at such a young age. I once interviewed a kid in Wichita homeless at 5 years old bit.ly/H2uOWq. I know how horrible my first day homeless was as an adult, so my heart breaks thinking about what these kids must have done through. But to them, the streets were better than the abuse they were going through.
We will never end homelessness until we can fix families!

Firstly, no, I'm not dead.
Second, I am no longer on the streets. I have, in the many years since this video, become an apartment manager and I am also a fulltime student in college. I was on the streets for 3 1/2 years after this video was posted. I am currently in contact with the creators to do a follow up video. If you guys have any questions, I don't mind answering them.
But can we stop saying I overdosed on Fentanyl, please? Because, wow. That's horrible, ya know?
I think it's great to hear your update. Look forward to hearing more. I do have a question, what was the turning point, or what helped you off the streets. And what are you going to school for. Hope u continue to thrive. And maybe one day you will be able to help other youth in situations like u were in.

Well, I don't think the kid had to DO the actually math to know himself what age he started on the streets haha. He didn't have to count back 11 years, then and there in the video, he just remembered. Its personal for him, not math :P
Emmett Kubes It’s still embarrassing for the cameramen to not be able to subtract 11 from 18 lol
@@l.arandom1631 I count on my fingers for things like that quite often because I didn't have a proper education. I try to force myself to find other ways to do it but it's easy to revert back to simple ways when you weren't taught things at a certain age or missed out on consolidating those concepts for whatever reason. Basic addition, subtraction etc - these things are all taught. People sometimes can't comprehend what it's like to skip that and then try to navigate day to day math as an adult. It happens to many people, not just people who didn't do middle or high school (like me).
When you’re thinking on your feet 24/7 and younger, your brain is much more active
People on the streets tend to be more inteligent than people who are considered succesful in the modern society. Practice > theory

I mean I’m happy for him as he’s now living in a house with his partner :)
it's really scary to me that in this day and age, the only way for a homeless kid to get food and a bed is by applying to the ARMY of all places.
Or go into prison.
Or be nonwhite and apply for free housing.
There's worst honestly
That’s not the only way it’s just the only way THIS person chooses to get off the streets.
The army is one of the best career choices anyone can make, homeless or not. You get way better benefits in the army than you would with a regular civilian job

Just because someone may be in a worse position than you, it doesn't mean that all your problems are insignificant. Sure, being homeless is not compared to not being able to buy a brand new supercar, but you may lose a loved one or be very ill or lose your job. What I mean is, you may not have the worst luck in the world but your own problems are still there and you don't have to guilt trip yourself and force yourself to be happy. Where's this kid's white privilege?
@@thatsright4194 White privilege doesn't mean a minimum standard of living for white folks, it means if a white and dark person are put in equal situations, the white person will be more likely (but not guaranteed) to get a better outcome due to conscious and unconscious bias. So they are more likely to be hired even if dark people are equally qualified, they get better options for housing from landlords and sometimes slightly cheaper rent, people are more likely to assume they're good and law-abiding people, etc. So for example, if a white homeless youth and a black, native or brown homeless youth are both asking for money on the street, the white youth might make $10 in an hour and the other youth make $5 or $6 because passersby got a less favourable impression of them.
SabakaJunglay in 2020 finding jobs that pay different based off race is very rare.

I found his thoughts to be negative in the same way a majority of people are - those that believe life happens to them. He sees "money" and "enlisting in the army" as his only options , but what about how he wants to feel, his passions and dreams, he said he's not even thinking of those sorts of things, because he's in survival mode, he's not able to go deeper within himself... Wishing only the best for this kid who is in his 20's now, hoping he has seen past the illusion of "life happens to me", and realizes he is 100% responsible for his life 🙏
HonestInquiry dude he’s not responsible for his parents dying. That idea of being 100% responsible comes from stoicism, and it is in reference to things that are within your control. Your parents dying is not within your control. If not being strong and forward thinking, evaluating the idea of enlisting in the army, and taking action towards that is not being responsible I don’t know what world you live in. Most people just beg for money. Homelessness is a complicated problem with no one answer, and certainly survival and stability should precede passions. It was just a bait to see if the story was real. Kinda like cops or lawyers during interrogation/cross-examination try to throw someone off.
Edit: at least I hope lmao.
@@Zer0Sen yea i think so too
He didn't do math he know how old he was when he dipped his house
So wise for so young. You can’t really control anything. Best wishes to this young man. 💕
This kid is probably more wise than a lot of adults
Yo I wanna hug this guy. He seems so sweet. Someone get him a job
It's been 6 years since this upload. If he was accepted to the army or wherever he applied, I'm sure he must be well off now
@Frank Martinez he probably doesnt live anywhere near this dude. Use your brain
He has a job, panhandling, homeless people that stand on the streets are alot different than the ones you never see who live out of sight, in fact half the ones on the streets arent even homeless, its like a growing trend to act homeless to beg for money...the world we live in
The ghostly fox don’t be naive
I don’t give these guys a cent. As a matter of fact I want their dirty asses off our streets
I hope he is doin alright now, he seems like such a good guy and someone I would love to have as a friend.

Ditto. Hope he's well established now.

Am really sorry for that experience bro. The streets are tough, wish you a break through.
Such a gem 💗
Bless you child thanks for teaching for giving me this special insight. My children and I may never walk in your shoes and I wish we won't,

He looks like a kind hearted person someone should have helped him
He ran away from foster. He ran cos they were abusive
he's a kind hearted BABY.... how does this happen??
Life isn't fair man. It fuckin sucks but it is what it is. If he put his mind too it he wouldn't be homeless.
people dont help kind people, kind people help people
Very wise as well, I m guessing any helped people gave him came with strings.
This is the look of exhaustion, hungry, constantly moving, having to be alert at all times, that is not drugs. He is not high, that's the look of a rough life. God-bless this young man always.

U are right in one way but hes veeeery high or usually is, I dont blame him for shit tho imagine what a rough life, taking survival of the fittest to another level.
Aye Victor he is 100% winged on drugs pal or just feeling the effects coming off them at least. I agree with what your saying about the exhaustion and everything though because God love him he probably is, look at the state of him sure

I love the way he talks. There are many people who are living in much better conditions, attending good schools but they speak bad english. This guy seems kind and intelligent.

This is why I hate when people just label homeless people as mentally ill... they all aren't.
Can being homeless cause mental illness - if it is prolonged maybe? Hunger and malnutrition? I once heard a reforming prisoner, in half-way house, say that the difference between being a criminal and a normal person is “the ability to make long range life plans, and carry through on the steps”. This requires some education about life goals, career planning, finances - things that good schools and families should teach children. I think there must be competing attention between immediate needs vs. making long range plans for a homeless person. What is sad is when they give up on any long range plans. That’s when they need a helping agency to put them in touch with education, job and housing opportunities. I applaud this young man for at least having a plan to lift him up - Army. Why he didn’t accept the earlier help provided (foster care) is a question - but, I suppose something might have gone very wrong there. Every case is different and requires good foster parents and counseling. Maybe this young man never had the opportunity to deal with the tragedy of his parents’ death in counseling.
He’s alright his Instagram is Darby.dabber he doesn’t post anymore but he’s still alive look at his tags
Well, if someone's homeless AND mentally ill, that's an even better justification to help them
@@davidjohnston710 homelessness at a young age can contribute to the development of personality disorders, but this kids story is very unlikely
@Onion Face if he is mentally ill it makes his story even more suspect, what's your point?
So happy for him. May God bless him🙏
Hope everyone is doing good and staying safe. Sending support and hearts to all. ❤❤❤

He obviously wasn’t on drugs dude was homeless for 11 years
John Smith not necessary everyone is not the same some people are just homeless
John Smith with that level of thinking you have, you deserve to live on the streets

Homeless kid has a better education than the cameraman.
18 - 11 = 7 (not 11)
He could just remember the age he started being homeless and didnt actually calculate it. The cameraman fails tho haha.
education has nothing to do with this lol
Michael Jay - Value Investing you're wrong, he had no way near the education the interviewer had
hes like 22-23 hes probably older than you lil man
It's not cool to gloat like that. Misscalcalculating a seamingly easy equation doens't mean he has no education and it certainly don't make you smart or look good for pointing it out. Being sublet or pointing it out with humor will get you farther. Thumbs down for being "that guy".
This Dude Have Guts Living On Streets Since Seven. I Respect You Man and hope you made to army! 🥂
Bless his heart.. I know how it feels not having parents, you feel alone and scared . I’m so glad he still smiles
That's exactly how I feel not having parents.
I was a homeless addict for 10 years. Got clean, worked hard at a job, just bought my own house. (I am not the kid in the video, i am another individual who risen out of a rough situation)
amazing! maybe one day i can flip my life for the better.
@@brytonduropan6741 I know this sounds cliche but if I can do it, anyone can. I lived for dope (heroin, crack, meth) been clean for 3 years, im going to bible college and working in addiction counseling

Proud of you 👏🏼
This is what recommendation is for. See how privileged some of us live.
Homeless people are not homeless so that other people can feel better about their own lives. People are homeless because they have been failed by society. Learning about these stories should be a conduit for change. Not something that comforts you.
@@ig-nat-ius1891 Vagrants are such because they choose to not trade their labor for money and their money for necessities. If I chose to be a bum I'd be unable to pay rent too but people would wring their hands and give me lots of free stuff enabling my work is for suckers lifestyle.
Ig-nat-ius it depends on how they got homeless. This kid deserves better because he never got the chance at a good life. Other homeless throw it away with drugs or just pure laziness. Some can’t work due to disabilities. We shouldn’t give the homeless their necessities, but rather help them get it. Give them a job, new clothes, help them have good opportunities.
You mean like the police lady who cried over her muffin that was taking too long?
@@littobud If one cannot work due to disability or mental illness then the government will support so claims this is why people are vagrants are fake. People are bums, ancient Rome had bums, just that today it has never been so profitable hence the growing horde in the work is for suckers lifestyle.
