that's pretty much the biggest compliment you can give to an english car guy i guess.
Multiply by 1.6... that's how hard it is to convert miles into kilometres. Kilometer is the American spelling.
I didn't realize it until I saw your comment but it pretty much is TG without the scripted bs.
It was the nicest that they converted the mileage to L/100 km. Mpg is for me to hard to easily convert.

EinkOLED nope not in germany, maybe a driving ban for older diesel (under euro 6) will come soon....

he literally wrote "under EURO 6". It's the exhaust emission standards of the EU.
it won't come even in germany....maybe for cities and all, but it certanly won't be banned from use, that's insane even for germany.
The Octavia doesn't need a vid like this to boost its sales. The market with these in Czech republic is ridiculous already. People are willing to spend as much as 3500 gbp for these. Its truly a legend. Only thing that makes it so great in my opinion is the VW engine in it anyways.
it's all vag anyway, škoda is just a badge of ex-czech brand.

@@reubinthomas Wrong. Top Gear did a hyper-miling test from Basel to Liverpool using a Subaru Legacy diesel, a Polo Blue Motion and a Jaguar XJ6 TDvi. Two of those weren't British, and it was the VW that arrived first, all having made the distance.

I know this is an old video now, but anyway. On a fuel economy run, it's amazing how much your MPG goes up if you sit behind a truck. Once drove behind a truck in a Prius. Set the radar cruise control to Nissan Qashqui mode (formerly known as Audi mode), and just let the car ride along. Achieved 90mpg on the 22 mile run, which did include a significant 2 mile climb at the start.

In the late 80's, I had a '75 Dodge Monaco.
When I first got the car, I noticed that, if I stopped quickly, and the gas tank wasn't full, the car would rock back and forth for awhile. I took notice of that, and purposely ran out of gas to see how much it would take.
I put 38 gallons of gas in, not including the gallon that I was keeping in the trunk for emergency.
About a month later, I decided to hypermile for a whole tank of gas as the car seemed to get good mileage on highway driving.
I got 996 miles before the car started sputtering. That gave me my numbers.
The spare gallon was dumped in, and I got my gas, and went home.
With the 38 gallons that went in giving me 996 miles, that came out as a shy hint over 26 MPG.
In a modern car, 26 MPG is no great achievement. However, in a two ton car with the aerodynamics of a filing cabinet, and a V8, it's nothing short of a miracle.
The car...
318 V8, automatic, no tag on the rear end...
However, two turns of the drive shaft turned the wheel once...
The car was very fast, but about as quick as a snail off the line.
I believe that the car was probably ordered new for highway use, which would explain its poor city performance, and city MPG.
excuse me, what does no tag on the rear end mean?
Karthoum means it didn't come stock with a l.s.d
thank you!
Karthoum no problem :)
It means there was no little metal tag attached to the axle housing denoting the gear ratio.

The glorious 1.9 TDI. One of the best engines ever build: quality, durability, mileage and decent power. Never disappoints!
Mehmet Uzun Which makes me wonder why it went totally wrong for Volkswagen with the newer generation of diesel engines
FrankypankyV8 do you mean the scandal or that they are weaker?
Because if you mean that the new diesel engines are worse compared to the 1.9, it is just a business plan. Give the people a worse engine so they will go to the garage more which means more money for the manufacturer. The 1.9 barely needed maintenance, regularly checks were enough.
But I have nothing to say about the scandal.
To be fair common rail would be even better if it had the same emissions regulations as the rotary pump engines. Pity emissions got so tight

New skoda could do this twice on one tank
Even the new Skoda could do this.
Yeah I had an old truck and it was the most amazing thing ever. Sat for I think 8 years-ish. We had it running in two hours. We had to rip the tank off because of the quantity of holes in it was overwhelming, but we just shoved a red gas can under the hood and filled it occasionally. It was quite efficient for a truck. That 1.5 gallon tank could get that thing far.

Simply Amazing and fully shows how these VAG 1.9 TDi are well built and economic. Even these bloody hybrid wouldnt be able to do this challenge or come any where near 400 miles. Another good engine similar economy and reliabily is the Renault 1.5 Dci K9K 6 Speed Variant now used by Mercedes. By the way, excellent challenge, top gear and grand tour would have never showed something like this. Keep it Up Alex & Car Throttle Family !
W Racer These hybrids have smaller fuel tanks, that doesn't help now does it!

A car from VW group reporting false mpg. Who'd have thought it?
16:15
I would say that solely due to tyre circumference error.. which result in differences between tripmeter mpg vs actual distance travelled
Please tell me the name of a car, that has accurate mpg in its specs. Those are lab tests under ideal conditions with non essential things like non driver seats and interior parts removed.
@@obi-wankenobi9871 mpg in lab test doesnt involve weight reduction or whatsoever... But the just use rolling road (or linear load dyno) which doesnt account for hill-climbing load as well as wind resistant...as simple as that...
@@AmirPomen i have seen such testing and they removed parts, that the car didnt need to be roadworthy. The laws have changed since then, but this car isnt exactly new, so the specs arent up to date either.
It is chiptuned to be more economical... He said that one or two episodes ago..
Eastern European taxi drivers blank out their EGR and get leaner tune on the engine to get crazy l/100 numbers
EGR valves were invented to improve economy as well as emissions, but driving with a choked up one makes it worse. You don't get a lean mix by blanking your EGR but as you reciculate less exhaust you add more oxygen which the ECU compensates for by adding more fuel (not to lean the mix out), the cabbies must apply another trick, The oxygen sensor needs to be fooled too?
An EGR reduces fuel consumption on part throttle (easy cruising), but the problem is that it gets clogged up and leaks all the time reducing power. Secondly it also fouls the intake valves which eventually makes your engine run worse. I too drive a 1998 petrol car made without EGR from the factory. I also get 45 US mpg highway and 40 in the city. If I sneak around however at 35-45 mph I get 70-90 mpg. So an EGR is really not useful if you know how to drive a car efficiently. It is just one of those gimmicks made for the manufacturer to pass the NEDEC driving cycle test.
Hi, I am from Hungary, but living in the UK, owning a 1.9 TDI Octavia estate. The first thing I did after purchase is removing the EGR. I drive my car regularly on long distances. Last year we had been to Barcelona, and back to Hungary. On a long run with a heavy foot, it takes 580-640 miles with a fill up doing 80-100 miles/hour (no speeding, I do high speeds in Germany on the autobahn). My car is a 52 reg PD engine with a VNT turbo (unfortunately).
EGR reduces NOx emissions (the worst kind of emissions), don't be a dick to the air you breathe, just clean the thing. I bet it is cheaper to clean it up a few times, than to remove it.
I have 2003 octavia tdi and first thing like most people do is get rid of the egr valve. Done plenty off long distance drives and had great fuel economy
reminds me of Jezza and his excursion to scotland and back in a 4.2 Audi A8 15 years ago. Old diesels are the best and the gouvernment can shove their idea's about efficiency up their arse.
great video ;)
I think Jezza did a thousand miles back then
Jakub Wójcik 800 i think it was too, you'll find it on UA-cam somewhere
Old diesels are very efficient, but they are not very clean unfortunately. Still, new engines are pretty good, even with all the emission devices.
Thanks for showing the stats in the Kilometers as well!

A true petrol-head what a senseless comment
A true petrol-head o yeah thanks captain obvious
1000 km is also a lot less than 800 miles. xD
100l/100km? Thats economic 😂
Well, tanks do 10L/1km so there is that.
The MPG calculator is not "lying". When you fill up all the way to the top of the filler neck, the computer is registering speed and distance traveled, but is not detecting a decrease in fuel level, so it'll keep adding range to your trip. I've got a petrol SAAB with the 2 liter that I took on a trip to Greece (from Romania), and on leaving Bucharest, just doing 90km/h it was showing over 1000 km range and climbing, which I knew couldn't be true, no matter how light-footed I was going to be.
The fact that the VW 1.9 Diesel is economical anyway lead to it taking longer for it to start registering your fuel consumption. That's also why you'll be potting along with the fuel gauge staying steady and then it'll seem like it's suddenly started dropping without you changing your pace.
That being said, awesome trip regardless and well done to you guys :D
I don't think so, there must be a sensor measuring amount of fuel going into the engine that's how you can read your "current" MPG, I would think this is being used to calculate how much fuel you burned over distance. But it may vary from car to car.
vtr0104 Current MPG and distance remaining figures are calculated using fuel levels passing through the injectors, not fuel remaining in the tank. Most cars will be inaccurate to 5.5% approximately.
Those trip computers are known to be wildly inaccurate. As an example, I recently did a long distance journey in a 1.6 petrol Citroen C4. With 4 adults in the car plus a week's luggage, we were driving down a 50mph average speed camera section of the M6 in Staffordshire with the cruise control on and the on board computer at one point hit 180mpg due the extremely low amount of fuel I was using (basically tick over)

Great video Alex, I have had 2 x 1.9 TDI Golfs but never got more than 54mpg so great driving I think that it is a brilliant engine.
reminds me of when I picked up a car a few weeks ago, was already in need of refueling but I figured "it'll get home, still got about 90km left of diesel".
about 20 minutes into driving home, I get a call from the dealership asking if I could come back to sign another paper. Said yes and figured "I'll fill it up before getting on the highway"
Didn't find a station before getting on the highway, but figured "can fill it up along the highway"
Didn't find a single station for more than half the trip home, with the warning saying 10km left of fuel for like 15 minutes straight. Turned off everything, even the daytime lights, and I guess got lucky enough to find a station like 20km away from home or less.
What a save.

I do not think so. The Octavia holds nearly 60 litres of fuel, but Prius got only 40ish. With the real Octavia's fuel economy of 3.8L/100kms, the Prius must have 2.5L/100kms and lower. And the official number from toyota is up to 60usmpg ~ 3.9L/100kms.

The 1.9 TDI engine is a masterpiece a true legend
A good diesel can make a strong argument for not buying a new electric car 80+mpg

, Best electric is the Tesla model S. The Tesla Model S 100kwh battery can only do upto 393 miles.
14.5 gallons (UK) of Diesel contains 700kW of energy most of that is lost as entropy. Therefore if the Tesla battery had the same energy density it would travel 7 times further. But of course, this is the problem with electric cars. Also, Tesla's have a tendency to catch fire in an accident, I'll take a Diesel any day.
Wow, fantastic stuff - great work again guys!
Still sad about Trevor :(
+riyan
why? And which car exactly was trevor again?
Etherion The Accoord ☹️ it got ran over by a tank
+Riyan
ah, that was also the one in which they tried how far you can go on a empty tank, right? I'm not so good with the names, sadly. I already forgot the name of project mudtype.
Etherion yes I miss it’s vtec 😕
Awesome video, just funny when people say 23 degrees is hot when it’s hotter in Australia during winter 🤣
Sam Barnett That is why sensible people don’t live in Australia.
This one is right out of the school of Jezza/Hamster/Slow, well done!
Next episode: How many laps to the Nürburgring on one tank, but this time trying to make the best times you can.
I did it too but my wife is tired from pushing.
Thanks for using standard units. Good on you, mate.
My Skyline with a 80 liter tank can barely get 440 miles on one tank 🤦🏼♂️ THAT'S HIGHWAY DRIVING. City driving is like 250 miles
