The Ruger Downgrade & The SR9 Series

  • If you buy a Ruger SR9c for $200 bucks right now you're not getting the same gun they used to sell for over $400 just a few years ago. How do they do it? I have a theory. I also have a theory as to why Larabars are always on clearance.
    Since the SR series was introduced, Ruger hasn't upgraded it. They've downgraded it. Instead of making a good gun into a great gun, they just made it cheaper.

    I bought my SR9c years ago because 1)..it was a Ruger,my favorite arms manufacturer,2)..it had the best trigger pull on a striker fired pistol at the time,and 3)...it went from a compact 11 round EDC to a 17 round reload in a second. Plus,adjustable rear sight,ambidextrous controls,chamber indicator,and thumb safety. Made the Glock 19 look like my unmarried sister. I would carry this for months,then take it to the range and fire it,as is,with never any issues. Great pistol.

    This hit me right in the gut. My SR40c was the first pistol I took the trouble of buying new. I spent a whole deployment waiting to pick it up. It was a thrill to shoot, comfortable to carry, and over at least 1000 rounds, never gave me a single malfunction. I ended up selling it a month ago because I listened to everyone who trashes 40 and I was trying to fund a P320 RX... Even so, I've been overcome with regret.
    Yeah, the safety and LCI make no sense. Yeah, there is no threaded barrel and there never will be. But it fit my hand and made me a better shooter than any other pistol I've ever had. After watching this, I vow to get an SR pistol again. I thought I'd loved a gun before, but now I finally know what it really feels like.

      The Security 9 isn't crap by any means but it's not anywhere NEAR as good as the SR series. The SR series had better finish, fit, ergonomics, sights and trigger. It also had steel rails, not aluminum rails.

      It's kinda like the grip zone mentality. Folks went apeshit over that. "why are they telling me where to grip???" - caveman mentality right there.
      I watch Colion Noir's video on the SR9C and when talking about the LCI, he was like, "why would you NOT want an LCI to be noticed, especially by someone unfamiliar with guns?", which makes a lot of sense. He also said, "you can't see it when you're shooting", which is true. Some folks like to hear themselves crying about things not worth crying about, I guess.

Used 9E in competition a good bit. Only thing I didn't like was the magazine safety (easily removed). The other stuff is no big deal for me. Both have a nice broken in trigger of 4lbs on my trigger scale. Rugers best pistol so far. Will have the new Galloway Lion Heart flat face trigger in on Thursday to try on 9E. Interesting points. I always felt this was a very underrated pistol. I was working in a big box retailer that involved waterfowl and mountains when the first ones came out. It was the first ruger handgun to come out when they wanted to instead of waiting for shot show. Lots of display materials and such came out with it. It also lacked the trigger saftey at first, they added it later because the Ruger reps said it could fire when the saftey was off and you dropped it.

    The SR was my first handgun. Excellent trigger. I replaced the sights with Trij HDs and put a stainless steel guide rod in mine. It's got over 2k rounds through it, with only a few malfunctions (it doesn't like Win white box). Very accurate and reliable gun.
    I have since replaced it as my "go to war gun" with a Glock, simply because of the aftermarket support and cheaper magazines for the Glock.

Finally I fixed it with aftermarket parts from Galloway Precision and filing and polishing the trigger bar. Biggest reason why Ruger and other manufactures changing things regardless if it's on the firearm or replace a hard case to a cardboard box or accessories, main reason for doing this? Keep production cost down.

    Keep the same type of slim, sleek frame design but have more aggressive slide serrations, a rail for more options of accessories, slide with an optics mount, ambidextrous slide release to match the other ambi controls, and slightly more aggressive grip texture. I prefer the peep hole indicator over the raised flag. Home run! This is just off the top of my head. Will meet with the engineers tomorrow morning. Let's do this! 😅

    No other pistol has a faster and more reassuring loaded round indicator than an SR when you are awakened in the middle of the night and it is pitch dark!

    A couple of quick observations. I have owned three of these so far. My first two had the mat stainless steel finish that you are showing here. The one I actually picked up today from the gun store is one with the shiny slide and the different back plates. I was a bit taken back when I saw that. Because I knew the two I had before were nothing like that. And I wondered why this thing was so damn shiny. But after watching your video, you definitely answer that question for me. And I wanted to say thank you for that. That definitely helped clear up some things for me. That and some other research that I did. However, there is a couple of things I would like to disagree with you on. Mainly the manual safety. I personally think it’s a good idea for it to be there. Again, it’s just my opinion. I am a huge fan of 1911 pistols. And as we all know, they have a manual safety as well so I am used to those. I guess that’s why this one doesn’t bother me. Now as for the loaded gun indicator. It could have been a bit less obvious let’s say. When it was loaded you could’ve had just like a little red notch that popped up or something or with my Ruger SR 1911 when it’s loaded, it just has like a little opening where you can glance in and see the round in the chamber. But on the flipside, it is nice that it’s there. Even if it is a little oversized lol but I do actually like having it there. Again, just my opinion, my friend. Overall, I will agree that I think Ruger gave up on this way too soon. These are good firearms. The design is good. I’ve always been happy with the ones I have owned. They’ve all been top-notch weapons. And I guess that’s why that even though Ruger has discontinued them that they have almost a colts falling. These guns people really like. You don’t see them come up for sale that much in the wild. when you do they generally run around $299 and up. Usually it depends on if it has both of the magazines with it or if it comes with the Crimson trace laser. Which the one I picked up today did. Unfortunately it only came with the 17 round mag. I will have to track down one of the 10 round mags. So it looks like the one I picked up today is one of the original versions of this pistol. If it performs as well as the other two did, then, I know I will be extremely satisfied and happy with this firearm.

    I love the SR9 and the SR9C. I love the thumb safety and would not carry a gun live chambered without it. I also love the pop up loaded chamber indicator, and this is why I choose SR9 over Glock and just about every other similar sized 9mm carry gun. The best part is the smooth short light trigger which the thumb safety affords. Glock triggers travel a mile before shooting, and they have to because there is no thumb safety. Sure, you could modify the trigger and make it travel less on a Glock, but you just make the gun much more dangerous to carry.

    The SR40C is actually good (as far as compact 40's go). If they had upgraded the sights and grip texture, left the mag disconnect off, and fixed the camblock pin problem then they would still have a competitive pistol. Jumping ship for the RAP just to throw a backplate and a new chassis system on their flagship was a mistake and they knew there was no way they were getting any contracts with that thing. The Security 9 is a decent budget pistol but I don't like the things. Unfortunately it looks like they're riding the budget train to the end of the line.
    And the Lemon Larabars are ok.

    Ruger included the safety and other features because it was persuing a government contract. "Growing up" on a Colt 1911, the safety does not bother me. Nor does the loaded chamber indicator. The best feature of the SR9 is the ergonomic feel. I have many shooters pick up the SR9 and remark how "comfortable" it is. They shoot well and are very reliable. Affordable also. I have owned many expensive pistols that were not as good.

    In fairness to the gun, (a) the thumb safety is easy to flick off, but much harder to flick on, so there's not much chance of accidentally flicking it on, and (b) the loaded chamber indicator is NOT visible when looking down the sights. As to the magazine disconnect, I've never needed one, but I have known cops who did, when they were fighting over their gun. Conversely, I've never heard of an armed citizen who HAD a magazine disconnect, where it somehow cost him his life in a gunfight. (Competition is a different story, of course.) So for me, the disconnect is a non-issue.

    I held my Hellcat over my SR9C without the magazines and I lined up the triggers, the rear of the slides, and the bottom of the grips perfectly only the front of the slide was longer on the SR9C at just under 3/4 of an inch due in part to a longer barrel.
    Folks, that's amazing.
    And after all the hoopla, research and development that went into making the microguns like the Hellcat and p365 they each now have multiple larger iterations That put them at the same or larger size than the SR9c!

    Kinda missleading saying the sr9 was downgraded. All they have changed on this gun over the years is they UPGRADED something on the trigger and they RENOVATED the striker plate for a cleaner look. Literally the opposite of what you are saying. As affordable as this gun is, they aren't going to customize it for you like a loaded baked potato, that's part of the joy of being a gun owner. You gotta do all that yourself. Maybe the socialists are invading the gun enthusiasts now idk but yes in a real world we work for things. Nobody is sitting around waiting for us to tell them our dreams so they can wave a wand and make them come true, we gotta get up and go make em happen, it's the joy of being American :) And if you want a gun without safety features go buy a Glock or a Sig lol. You admit that not having a slightly polished slide is BETTER than having it, a person might call that an upgrade :) You stoned bro? The ONLY thing a person could say they "cheaped out" on is some newer ones (like yours) coming out with black extractors which you totally failed to mention, which is supposedly a factory mistake which their warranty department will fix for free. That's because Ruger is a high quality manufacturer, they don't make junk like you are trying to say. The only reason the price has gotten cheaper is because everything gets cheaper after years of production, that doesn't mean they have reduced the quality of the gun. If anyone wants an honest review of this gun go check out Hickock 45 channel!

Best value I ever found in a handgun. Since I don't have a fullsize SR9 I did take and put a drop of the clear Gorilla super glue under the sleeves on the 17 round magazines, worked perfectly.

    You have good points. I have a first issue, came with a conventional trigger that was recalled for installation of the glock type replacement. Upgraded to oversized fixed night sights and a cerakote finish on the slide. Magazine disconnect is poorly rendered mechanically. Under rated player. They should have focused on SR instead of the American and Security series. SR full sized is more like a Glock 45 than a 19, full sized grip with compact slide.

  • @Lunetois

    You know, I've been foisting this opinion for a long time on people, or at least a variant of it. Constantly, I will burden friends and influences and mods on your Discord server with my tedious complaint that Ruger should nix the Security 9 and the American pistol both and create two new lines of handguns. I think an updated SR series with these features you just mentioned and the lock-up and take-down of the American pistol would absolutely slay the polymer-frame market, especially if they went back to the sleek, non-ugly look the SR series had. I also think they should make another line of DA/SA Sig knock-offs and try again with the alloy-frame P-series though admittedly with some very purposeful design changes to again reduce takedown time and get rid of mag disconnects; maybe a frame-mounted safety/decocker just for good measure. Not pushing down the ejector on the American or having to push a pin through the frame is a wonderful advancement compared to the original design in terms of function and the lock-up on those pistols is really cool but all the bits and bobs on the outside are sheer garbage, and nobody wants a square sitting on the web of their thumb and forefinger.

    • @Hoplopfheil
      @Hoplopfheil  4 роки тому

      Pushing the ejector down was a novel way to avoid pulling the trigger during takedown, way back on the P series. It definitely shouldn't stick around now.

With stainless steel pins that locks trigger assembly to the frame! and adjusted sights to my eyes and target so super accurate gun! Only 300 plus dollars do not remember the total price! And its a AMERICAN GUN! I also feel they cut the SR series and the P94 series guns short!

    When I saw the Ruger American I cringed. When I got my first gun it was right around then time the SR9 released and I actually was going to buy it. But for $125 less they had the P95 on clearance with 3 mags new in box. I decided to go with the P95 as I wasnt sold on all the safeties and I thought that the loaded chamber indicator ruined an otherwise gorgeous looking pistol. I always thought they were going to come around and correct it with getting rid of all those terrible safeties. Instead they released the much clunkier and altogether ugly Ruger American. Guess I have to wait another generation to hope Ruger makes something better. I always liked that their style was so distinctly different from Glock. But the Ruger American really, really, upset me. Idk why but it kind of broke my heart.

  • @joevarga5982
    @joevarga5982 День тому

    What's the problem with the manual safety? The trigger blade isn't a proper safety. It doesn't prevent you from inserting your finger in the guard and pulling the trigger. It's only good for preventing the trigger from pulling ITSELF if you drop the gun.
    The trigger creep on this gun is terrible. I hate a gritty trigger. It's not noticeable when firing live rounds, but it's indicative of cheap junk. It's basically a dressed up Glock.
