I was deciding between a S&W SV9VE and a Ruger Security... then I saw this video. Oh boy, I am glad you made this video. I went to the gunshow today and traded my Kahr with a Ruger SR9C. I love the trigger. Thanks for all your reviews on different guns. It is just a little bigger than my Springfield XDS, and with the added capacity of the SR9C 17+1 . I love it .
That's great, I'm happy the video was of use to you. Galloway precision has some upgrade parts for the Ruger sr9c. I've got a video on installing them. Its a great gun.
Good choice. I have plenty of M&Ps and love S&W but the SV models are one the most poorly made S&W and hand guns that exist. FYI XDs are notorious for the grip safety failure and even having live rounds stuck in the chamber... you may already be aware but be careful. 👍
My fave carry gun by far. Shoots awesome. Sold my Glock 19 to buy one for my wife too. Its very slightly wider than my shield 9mm. My SR9c has been very very reliable. Have the full size also. Shoot it in competition and its rock solid as well.
Sweet, I Carry a G19. My wife loves 19 so I decided that it would be a good idea for me to have the same gun so that if she ever needed to pick mine up and use it she wouldn't have to even think about it. I've been wanting to try out a shield. What's your overall opinion of yours?
@@davemaximillion5501 oddly enough I shot both today. Strongly prefer SR9c over my shield. Kinda thinking about getting rid of. Can drill a hole with sr9c, I just can't shoot my shield nearly as well. Also took calipers to them. Sr9c is only 1/8 th inch wider but handles way better.
Have you shot the Ruger more than the shield? I know the grip on the SR9 feels very natural, and points great. I've never handled a shield to be able to compare.
@@davemaximillion5501 Yes I have far more time behind Ruger. But thats kind of my point. The size diff is very minimal. But the shield is just small enough and light enough that its way easier to push it left. I dont really see any advanage to carrying the shield. I just cant perform as well with it, it has less capacity, smaller sights ECT. You should try and rent one and shoot them side by side. I'm sure with lots of training it will get better but all my other pistols are double stack so why train for profiency with an inferior platform. But this just my opinion. You may love it.
I also forgot to mention the Ruger is 5oz heavier. Which is not a huge amount when in a good holster. But that weight and the fact you can get a better grip there is MUCH less recoil compared to shooting a shield.
I love my Sr9c sent it back to Ruger they put new recoil spring and guide rod , and a new extractor is shoot and feel better than it was when it was new..
Phenomenal gun thanks for the review , i was hoping for an sr9c gen 2 . Unfortunately Ruger dicontinued th SR series. Scooped one up on Gallery of Guns shipped to my lgs for $347 .
I picked up a gently used one for $325 yesterday with an extra 17 round mag and sleeve. I modified the 10round mag to suit myself. I did not like the flat base or the huge hook so I cut the finger extension down to about 1/2in and it feels great for me.
Watch out Dave those shell casing will chip your paint on that Chevy Blazer lol. Actually that happened to a friend of mine and me shooting his Ruger Mini 14 one day. We was to close to the side bed of his new Chevy truck doing some rapid fire and those shell casing were beating the hell out of his paint. Ruger is a very good firearm manufacture, I have several Ruger firearms myself and have been very satisfied with the performance of them.
Lol, I know right. Unfortunately the paint is so oxidized that they probably wouldn't show up. Rugers are great firearms, I think they are largely underrated. Mini 14's are definitely a classic.
Have the Ruger SR45 and it's been nothing but a lemon and even sending it back to Ruger twice didn't fix it. After installing aftermarket springs and recoil guide rod, filing and polishing, was able to fix the issues. Regardless of caliber there are issues with a lot of SR pistols, if you see a mint use one beware. It's best to remove the magazine safety, been known to cause issues in some of the Ruger SR pistols.
FYI: the sr9 action is the same as a Glock. Glocks patent ran out and Ruger modified it to what is now the SR9 action. Ie true single double action where the striker is only half cocked until the trigger begins rearward travel. Drop safe. You can also ignore the manual safety as the trigger safety does it's job along with being drop safe. If you like Glock but have smaller hands, this is a great option.
I think my SR9c is the best concealed EDC I've ever owner. I like the ergonomics much better than the small Glocks. But that's my taste. No need for any micro .380 for me. Give me this 9mm with full sights. Can't be be beat, IMHO.
I think I would have to agree, especially the ergonomics and concealment. I haven't shot my SR9 a much as my Glock 19 so I can't speak to much on the reliability. But I'm sure the SR9 is just as sound. Thank you for your comment.
Had my SR9c a little over two years Dave and I really like it. As you may have learned the hard way (or maybe you forgot) the magazine has two clicks. No need to mash it, just press and wait for that second click. Enjoyed your video. A bit jealous about the great outdoors where you can ride out and shoot any time you want. About 25 years ago the railroad extended passenger service to the town where I live. Builders starting buying land and building around the clock and so many city people moved in that these days if you fire a gun a mile away (or even have a small fire in your backyard) there's a dozen calls to the police. And like the cops told me, if they get a call they are required to respond. Oh well, "that's the breaks of Naval Air." As the singers back then were singing, "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got . . . till it's gone; pave paradise, put up a parking lot." ( : { )
Lol I did figure that out after the fact. It is a great hand gun. I've had no issues with it. Sorry to hear that it's pretty hard for you to go shooting. That would be depressing. Do you have to go to a gun range then?
Yeah I sure do. It's a good range but the first year it's $270 (ouch), after which we can relax because the annual renewal is only $200. Heck I remember when you could get a good used car for that much, even in central California, and it would run for years.
We have a public range here but I'm not sure what the membership fee is. I just go out to the Badlands and do my shooting there. Much more private. How many rounds would you say you have shot through your SR9?
520 rounds total, all at the range. Living in MA now, range is half an hour's ride from my door and I'm not always able to motorcycle in the months when we have snow and ice on the roads. Plus I've had some mysterious illness that's kept me indoors for the better part of the last eight months. I'm 75 and when Illness hits it's not always easy to shake it off. I got hundreds of rounds of ammo here though, and I'm itching to get back to that range and get my money's worth.
Wanted to add how the last few times I've been to the range I've not used the sights. I just shoot from the hip (allowed at this range) or point at arms length and fire away. After a few practice sessions it's surprising how accurate I've become. Aiming is terrible slow Dave, trying to locate that front sight can be difficult, especially if the bad guy is moving and you have to stay on target while realigning both sights. If you haven't tried this yourself, you might give it a shot.
I got mine for 450.00 dollars. I asked for the best 9mm for a good price and I was handed the sr9c. I live in MA so we have to pay more for guns than a lot of other states. We have strict gun laws but not too bad. It's getting worse though. Just 2 years ago we could buy an ar 15 or AK. Now they are public enemy number 1. A lot of legal gun supporters in our state so hopefully we hold on to our constitutional rights.
Dave Maximillion I haven't had one problem. 6-700 rounds? Don't keep track of the round count, I probably should though. Lol, it's a fine little shooter. I'm thinking of picking the 40 one up also for the same price and place. Great video buddy. Keep them coming
I actually just shot this pistol @ the range on 11/15 and I actually liked it I’m thinking about purchasing it. Will you recommend this for home protection and carry? At least until I can get that .357 I want, that’ll definitely be home security no doubt
@@davemaximillion5501 I haven't shot it yet, but based off holding it in my hand/ aiming and dry firing, I can firmly say this is one hell of a gun and i would've spent way more for it than I ended up paying. Good video though about to pick one up tomorrow for $200 with some free hornady jhp. Considering jhp is running low in my area I'm definitely taking it haha.
Just ran rounds through my sr9c yesterday love it. Paid $425 with tax new in the box, don't know where you can find one for $275 in these times new in the box. Seems every site I visit they are out of stock.
I've actually had several people mention that to me. Think I will definitely put this into practice even though I'm pretty religious about cleaning my guns.
It removes all oil residues leaving it completely dry once the alcohol dries completely. And allows you to inspect the gun closely with out shiny oily spots. Plus it's cheaper to use alcohol than solvent.
Are you sure about using iso alcohol to clean? The concern would be plastic parts like the firing pin cup. I've had good luck with low VOC mineral spirits. Heck, back in the day I knew a Marine Gunny who would drop his 1911 parts in a pan of boiling water to clean them!
Thus far I haven't had any issues with it. I have heard of using mineral spirits. Haven't used it myself. Never heard of using boiling water. If it works though go with it.
Ruger the world before Glock..I was running armed security 20years ago..And my duty gun was a Ruger p90..police security all grab at the p series..even today I carry a p89..big yes blocky yes heavy yes..but after all these years Ruger will still whoop a Glock ass..lol
Too bad the stopped making it. I want one really bad. I picked up an American instead. If I ever see a good used one in the future,I'll probably pick one of these up too. I have a 10/22 a Mini-14 & a SD9VE. I've never had any problems with any of them. Well...besides the 22 jamming occasionally, but they all do that.
I didn't know they stopped making it. That is to bad. When a gun manufacturer builds a proven winner they should continue making a certain amount per year.
I found a holster on Amazon. Its by tactical scorpion gear, modular level 2. It's a retention paddle holster though. Not a thumb release. Also found a holster on cheaper than dirt. It's called the DeSantis cozy partner. It's an in the waist band holster. Also we the people holsters makes nice kydex holsters. I hope this helps.
Ok I may have found the one. Go to eBay and punch in, Tagua black leather mini thumb break OWB belt holster. Listed for $37.95, also go to midwayusa.com and punch in El Passo saddlery strong side select holster. Product # 742104. The last one I found is on the same website. It's the DeSantis thumb break scabbard belt holster, product # 766606. I don't personally have any experience with any of these but they are made of leather and look to be good quality.
Sometimes the gun will be more reliable with the factory plastic guide rod. I put a stainless steel guide in my SD9VE and it started jamming. It never jammed with a plastic one. Another thing is I've seen a few posts where people changed out their plastic guide rod for stainless steel and the stainless steel guide rod is harder than the slide, and it started damaging the slide, nicked it up or scratched it. After using a stainless steel guide rod,I wouldn't waste the money on one. It made my gun less reliable,I went back to plastic.
I'm a big fan of Ruger and have the SR45, Security 9 and EC9s subcompact. All are good, reliable firearms but the SR9c fits perfectly into my EDC rotation.
The SR9c is somewhat more compact and yet has the 17 round magazine whereas the Security 9 has 2, 15 round magazines. The SR9c has a long record of reliability and excellent accuracy. It's a higher end pistol but the Security 9 is no slouch either.
@@davemaximillion5501 any shooting course tells you never to trust indicators. Just be humble and take that advice. I about dropped my phone when I saw you attempt to chamber. I’m sure you’ve learned a lot more in 2 years though.
@@davemaximillion5501 Mine is all rough/gritty and it's a common complaint. Tomorrow I'm going to see if Ruger in Prescott, AZ is still open. Maybe they can fix it.
I was watching until he started firing. He has the worst shooting stance, and I completely lost all interest. The SR9c is the best EDC ive ever owned, but this guy is doing Ruger no justice.
Man thats a big waste of alcohol. No need to bathe it in that brutha. Way too much oil. NEVER....I MEAN NEVER put oil in your striker channel. It stays dry as a bone. The oil will attract all kinds of garbage. Lots of no no's here

NEVER oil the rear of the slide. Bad idea. Can gum up the striker channel resulting in it not firing when U need it most!
I've actually had several people mention that to me. Think I will definitely put this into practice even though I'm pretty religious about cleaning my guns.
I bought multiple full size magazines. Came with a 10 and 17 round magazine. The small one doesn’t seat properly.
That's unusual. I'm betting it might be a problem with that specific magazine.
Dave Maximillion I think it’s the magazine floor. No biggie, the 17 rounder feels much better in hand
Definitely, at least the higher round count magazine doesn't have issues.
Question...why do you use alcohol to clean your guns instead of solvent?
It removes all oil residues leaving it completely dry once the alcohol dries completely. And allows you to inspect the gun closely with out shiny oily spots. Plus it's cheaper to use alcohol than solvent.
got mine for 450 at academy sports but its a newer type of sr9c
Not bad at all 👍
Are you sure about using iso alcohol to clean? The concern would be plastic parts like the firing pin cup. I've had good luck with low VOC mineral spirits. Heck, back in the day I knew a Marine Gunny who would drop his 1911 parts in a pan of boiling water to clean them!
Thus far I haven't had any issues with it. I have heard of using mineral spirits. Haven't used it myself. Never heard of using boiling water. If it works though go with it.
Can u rack slide in while it’s in safety
Thats a good question. To be completely honest I've never tried it.
Ruger the world before Glock..I was running armed security 20years ago..And my duty gun was a Ruger p90..police security all grab at the p series..even today I carry a p89..big yes blocky yes heavy yes..but after all these years Ruger will still whoop a Glock ass..lol
Can't go wrong with a proven platform. If it isn't broke don't fix it.
Dave Maximillion ding ding ding ding ding ding
Nice job !
Thank you!
I don't like that you have to use a tool with the Rugers on breakdown. That's the reason I traded my ec9.
It is a drawback for sure. But with the overall quality and price. I think it's a great option though.
All you have to do is take one of those plastic chamber blocks that u get and its easy peasy .
First time shooting this gun I had a great grouping at 20 yards. That day I forgot my glasses.
Its a good shooter for sure. Did the grouping get worse when you remembered your glasses?
@@davemaximillion5501 All this time later my groups are always good. Even my buddy fired this pistol better than his own.
Very nice!👍
@@davemaximillion5501 Three years later and still have and love my "little" 9mm.
Hell yeah man, its a classic. Still a good option!
When a gun manufacturer builds a proven winner they should continue making a certain amount per year.
that's your back yard I wish I had a backyard like that so I can make plenty of noise
Yes its pretty nice. Pretty low population too.
@@davemaximillion5501 what state is that so I can move there lol and I want to b uy the ruger sr9c
Its a great gun. Especially for the money. I don't question its reliability at all.
@@davemaximillion5501oes the gun have a 20 round clip I love the 17 round gun
Mine came with 3, 10 round magazine's but it will also take the 17 round magazine's that come with the SR9 full size.
How is the recoil on this gun?
Its a bit snappy but not bad at all in my opinion.
I am looking for a lever 2 holster for my sr9c with a thumb release. I've looked everywhere. Any ideas guys???
I found a holster on Amazon. Its by tactical scorpion gear, modular level 2. It's a retention paddle holster though. Not a thumb release. Also found a holster on cheaper than dirt. It's called the DeSantis cozy partner. It's an in the waist band holster. Also we the people holsters makes nice kydex holsters. I hope this helps.
Dave Maximillion . Thanks sir. I'm looking for one specifically for a level 2 with thumb release. It will be for my Duty belt.
Ok let me do some more looking.
There is no such thing as a polymer recoil spring, U meant guide rod.
Yes correct, thank you.
I can believe it. I have a Hi Point C9 that I put a rat rod trigger kit in. I didn't think it could be worse than the stock trigger. I was wrong.
Nice truck
Thanks, its a 1979 K5 with a 400 small block.
Appreciate your review. Liked and subscribed. Have an SRc on order.
Thank you! I appreciate that. I love my Ruger SR9c, certainly worth every penny that it costs. There's other great guns out there but over priced.
I'm a big fan of Ruger and have the SR45, Security 9 and EC9s subcompact. All are good, reliable firearms but the SR9c fits perfectly into my EDC rotation.
Rich Weatherly I thought about checking out the security 9. Ended up going with the SR9C. Which one do you like/think is better?
The SR9c is somewhat more compact and yet has the 17 round magazine whereas the Security 9 has 2, 15 round magazines. The SR9c has a long record of reliability and excellent accuracy. It's a higher end pistol but the Security 9 is no slouch either.
Tell me what you think about the SR9 when you get it.
Nice
Thank you
I live in MA so I only got two 10 round mags. Yay for progressive politics.
A slow one step at a time infringement on the second amendment if you ask me.
Me too , feel so safe because of Martha Healy lol 🤣
Dude pull the slide from the back holy shit. I kept thinking you were going to shoot your finger off.
Lol, no worries
It has a chambered round indicator and wouldn't chamber a round. I was safe.
@@davemaximillion5501 any shooting course tells you never to trust indicators. Just be humble and take that advice. I about dropped my phone when I saw you attempt to chamber. I’m sure you’ve learned a lot more in 2 years though.
Will do, thank you! I appreciate that 👍
Yo I never knew the actual name was stern ruger
Yeah, kinda interesting.
Awesome!! Pistol
Thank you! For the money you can't go wrong.
An alcohol bath ??? Uh, me thinks not. Don't have a clue where you came up with that.
Gotta admit I got that from someone else. Not something I do anymore. It's just not needed. Luckily however it doesn't hurt anything though.
Mine has shit for a trigger.
Hmm? That's odd. Mine is outstanding but certainly isn't a bad trigger.
@@davemaximillion5501 Mine is all rough/gritty and it's a common complaint. Tomorrow I'm going to see if Ruger in Prescott, AZ is still open. Maybe they can fix it.
@joevarga5982 definitely a good place to start. Might just need a polish job is all.
I just put this thing on layaway at pawn store for 230$. Awwwww yeaaaaaaaa!
Hell yeah that's sweet. Let me know how you like it once you go shoot it.
I was watching until he started firing. He has the worst shooting stance, and I completely lost all interest. The SR9c is the best EDC ive ever owned, but this guy is doing Ruger no justice.
Work in progress. Gotta start some where.
Go watch some of my other videos. I admit my form was pretty bad.
Man thats a big waste of alcohol. No need to bathe it in that brutha. Way too much oil. NEVER....I MEAN NEVER put oil in your striker channel. It stays dry as a bone. The oil will attract all kinds of garbage. Lots of no no's here
Trial and error can be one of the best ways to learn I suppose.
Nice review, other than your profane use of the g-word.
LMAO 👍
Not learned anything about safety....thanks for the dud...
This wasn't a safety video. It really should be common sense. However if your looking for a safety video you should type in the search bar "proper gun safety and etiquette"
how about having a brain and common sense? there's your safety!..
Tom Rusch I could not have said it better👍
It blows my mind how ruger keeps skipping around on semi autos.. on their mk 1,2,3 and 4 series it's very similar.. same since 1949.. the others might be around for a few years even if they are popular and poof off to the next plastic fantastic..
Lol, Yes there are definitely some they shouldn't have stopped making.
Nice alcohol bath now the gun doesn’t have Covid
Lol 😆, that was my goal.
