Jillian Rebekah Tacoma TRD Shortbed Rig Walk Around Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 жов 2017
- Part 1 with our friend Jillian Rebekah and her 2016 TRD Tacoma Manual Transmission Shortbed Overland Build. Her approach is to wait until she encounters a consistent problem off the grid, then research and upgrades as she goes. It's a practical, and efficient approach that will result in an build that is specific to individual needs.
Head on over to our community and say, "Hi". We'd love to answer your questions about overlanding and help get you started!

Love her approach to the build. Don’t buy it till you really need it. I think it takes a way the joy of slowly looking forward to small new add ons as the years go by and you truly appreciate the functionality each add on brings to the adventure cos you know why you put it there.
Exactly! :)
I generally don't follow the walk-around series, this one I really liked. It's well thought through, she wasn't trying to build a monster but a classy and capable vehicle. Beautiful...
Thank you!!
That quicksand color is the best color for this truck.
I have to agree, haha!
I disagree! I enjoy my bright red one! It makes it easy to find in the parking lot too.
Yes quicksand and cement are the best colors on the tacos
What an unusually reasonable and non-materialistic approach to building a rig.
made me rethink my whole rig idea.
Need to learn from this…😩 I just buy….🥺
When we went looking for our truck, by the time we found it we called it the unicorn truck too. We are thinking of doing the Mojave in a week and we are like her, we didn't need a snorkle but we might need on for that trail. I respect her style. Thanks for interviewing a woman.
Have fun out in Mojave!!
You wouldn't need a snorkel on the Mojave. You can make it in a stock 4 runner and a tacoma. I did it 3 weeks ago
Purposeful. A powerful word and a down to earth perspective on where to spend money for your hobby truck that can also be your everyday drive. Great video.
Good job talking about tuning! That's the perfect way to do it. And Jillian is soooo right! With instagram or fb even you look at other builds and think, shit I need that... When in reality your stock rocker panels haven't even gotten close to hitting anything yet.
Function over form! Best way to go!
That truck is rad and, well, so is Jill! Welcome!
Quicksand + manual is the best combo ever! That's why I own the same thing.
Heck yea! :D
This overlanding is super interesting. Nice looking rig too.
I like Jillian's way of building her rig clean and simple. Great video once again. Looking forward to Pt.2
Thank you!!!
Oh ya!!
She seems like a super chill person to hang out with
Very nice video! I️ have been adding mods to my 2013 Tacoma the same way. Good advice for everyone!
Amazing, i love how she knows what she needs and wants.
Can’t wait to see the setup of what’s going on in the bed! Love that you went straight to stage six as well.
Part 2 Coming Soon! :)
I think I'm in love. She's building in the same order and reasoning I'm going with my taco
Wow she is super smart!! Great rig!!
Manual transmission is the best way to go! Love the build!
There are fewer and fewer out there...gotta enjoy them while we still can!
You lose the crawl control with the manual.
Not gonna lie im kinda of fancying her 🤩 love her approach to this build
Great build love the simplicity. Switch Pros is the best. :)
Cool build. Awesome person. Can’t wait for part 2!
:D Thanks Nick
Dude Michael you were just in my Apple store the other day holy moly! It was so cool meeting you!
Haha! Yes!
I'm doing the same thing with my jku. I'm focusing on certain recovery and emergency gear at the moment.
Excellent walk around - love Jillian’s truck! I feel exactly the same way in my personal philosophy of modification - just mentioned it today in a movie I was filming! Lift, tires, rack and sliders. My first four mods and only mods for quite a while. All because it was what I felt I needed for what I was doing! Needs evolve and so does the build! Great video mike and Jillian!
Thank you Jason!
love this build! Awesome truck.
Clearly a sharp gal. Smart approach to the rig and the hobby. Great episode M&C
Thank you Tom! Part 2 coming soon
Sweet setup
Thank you Nick!
Awesome Rig💪💪
Whoa she’s awesome. Great mentality and knew what she wanted. Tame and functional vehicle. Congrats!
Awesome !
She’s awesome!
really good walk around. best so far, as I share her mindset. modify only what you need. and make it in a clean way. the more stock, the less problems. I found myself struggling a thousand times over getting an aftermarket (steel or aluminum) bumper and winch. but you know what? better invest in tires and maxtrax, and learn to read the terrain. and put the money into an autarkic secondary (even third!) battery power supply with solar, a good quality compressor fridge, and other clever bits and pieces ..
My dream girl....
Sweet truck!
Love the rig. I'm planning on getting a TRD off road soon. I've been dying to get one but I need to save up more, the are expensive.
Very methodical process in modifying this vehicle. I wish I had the self control to do this, but in reality I see a part on someone else's rig that I like and I almost immediately buy it haha. I really like these new tacos, but they were out of budget when looking for a rig. I think tacos are a perfect balance between a daily and a rig, while my 80 LC is strictly a rig for me... can't afford to daily a vehicle that doesn't even get 10mpg. I daily my WRX and I absolutely hate being stuck in traffic with a manual trans so i'll just stick to automatic for my rig :D
Uh oh, your "process" sounds dangerous ($$$) ;) The 80s LC are awesome!
Hi! I like your rig and the set up!
Nice walk-around of your rig Jill.
Thank you Corey!!!
i like the fact that she carries a real knife!
great inspiring
I'm totally on board with the "upgrade when you NEED to, or when the trail rips it off" philosophy. At 6'2" of mostly torso, I went with the Chevy Colorado (Diesel) over the Taco's shorter interior height, so the comparative lack of aftermarket accessories has also kept my credit card in check a bit too... 30k miles in, and loving the California exploration!
Love it! Thank you for watching!
Sick build. I have a 09 build starting that will be on my channel. Overland and MTB traveling rig.
I really respect the "Add it when you need it" mentality. No need to add $1000 of gear you never touch
Smart lady!
best truck ever. nothing you don't need. get a vehicle, hit the road. best comment: "I'm not going to buy a bumper just for a light bar"
Basically exactly what I want haha. Great rig!
Thanks john!
Nice truck
Nice Jillian
Thank you Sir!! :)
I like that part about sharing locations. Hahahahaha right JillianRebekah you’re the best at sharing 😂😂😂
um...what? :P
Like the way she’s thinking.
Great build! I love your thoughts on the functional build.
Awesome Rig jill! Selling my FJ to go after a 3rd gen taco quicksand with the manual. #savethemanuals
Love that Taco! Awesome team @jillianrebekah and her husband @bfilk - I'm a member of the manualgearboxpreservationsociety myself!
Thanks!! :) Hopefully we get to share a campfire with you soon!
JillianRebekah MountainYot That would be a blast! For sure!
Goooooo Jillian!!
Thanks James!!
Awesome stuff!!
Cheaper alternative front mounted trailer hitch with 2 inch receiver you can use it for not only a winch but for other thing D rings bike racks. I might put one on my own Tacoma
Nice rig! I have 2014 Taco long bed TRD. Looking at ICON Stage 4
I like manual transmission vehicles I’ve driven them pretty much all of my life as I was born and Grew up in Ireland and the UK and pretty much nobody drives automatics over there. However I’ve just recently bought a Toyota Tacoma TRD pro to turn into an overland vehicle. And the hardest part for me was to buy an automatic I was able to get a manual transmission as I was buying the truck Neil but in my research I’ve over landers all over the world there are slightly more advantages to an automatic than a manual transmission so that’s why I went with the automatic but it is weird I keep looking for a clutch.
Is she a no.# member of Overland Bound now? Very smart build and in her own videos she knows her and her vehicle limits until the next upgrade.
OB 1655!
Im never giving up my #1655 ;)
2020 Tacoma anounced this week. Lets see if its worth waiting for or if this gen is better.
Love the Toyota Truck
TRD Sport can also be had with a 6-sp manual. For those keeping count.
Really? I guess I was mis-informed...good to know :) thanks!!
I was just saying the same. I have an 18 bbp trd sport M/T 4x4 sb
The pro also comes with a M/T but they are very hard to find
Great truck... check out her channel she goes into the bed rack and tent in her walk around
Yes!! Thank you! Or stay tuned for part 2 ;)
Hello. I like your videos and the way you explained the details. I have a Tacoma 2017 4x4 also. Can you give me more information about the tires, size, numbers. Thank you.
Jillian is a very wise young lady. Super cool watching her journeys on IG👍🏼🇺🇸
Awesome truck ! I love the more stock look over the really radical off road look but to each their own. Also nice to see a woman out off roading, you don't see it as much but it seems to be getting more poplar, especially in the ATV world. awesome build ! thanks OB !
Thank you!
She always pops up on my instagram. Looking at Tacomas, might reconsider a manual again.
Yes, then you can join the Manual Gearbox Preservation Society!! ;)
I know that "good" power, performance, and economy are all subjective, but as a 2017 4wd, 4 door, automatic Tacoma owner I would never advise anyone to buy a Tacoma. I've owned a half dozen trucks over the years (Fords and GMs) full sizes mostly and one Ranger. I do find the Tacoma to be incredibly lacking in torque. I'm still on stock tires. Because of this lack of torque, it needs more rpm to keep it moving which pulls the fuel economy down to what I averaged in my previous full size half ton trucks. This makes long excursions away from gas stations challenging without carrying extra fuel. Also it's only 1.5" narrower than my '97 Suburban, so it isn't any smaller or easier to maneuver on the trails. Don't buy into the hype and marketing of the Tacoma, like I did.
I'm a bit different in the philosophy except for the "rip it off so you can get a new one". First thing I did was bought a cheap '93 4 runner 5 speed and bought a winch on sale. I just got a tube bender and now I'm working on sliders. Should have done them first before smashing stuff
Liked and Subscribed. Looking through all your vids...nice job. Do some Jeep JK overland setups.
There are some great videos on here, thanks for watching!
Try finding a custom FJ!!!!!
My sport has manual transmission... it's not just the offroad
There's an upgrade software for your ECU transmission and engine now. You should have it with your dealer.
Very nice setup. I just purchased a 18 TRD off-road long bed. I went with the long bed because I do a lot of fishing. I plan to build very similar to yours I love the factory lines. The Tacoma is a great start stock it doesn't need that much more for me. Thanks
How much of a lift did that suspension give you?
Nice truck, Jillian. Good choice on the TRD Pro grill. Love your approach to keep the truck looking stock. I also love the 3rd gen body style and like your approach to your build. Also, good choice on manual transmission. Yes, the 3rd gen automatic transmission shift program leaves a lot to be desired. Safe travels & enjoy your Overlanding Adventures 😎
Great looking truck in my favorite color! I just find that motor under powered unfortunately and will have to wait for something new from Toyota. My 2nd gen. will have to keep going for a few years I fear...
I completely understand. I really think the 2nd gens are great vehicles, and you are in good company out there! :)
I think the front skid plate should come before sliders if I had to choose.
Did she do a re gear?
No re-gear yet
Jillian should run the Rebelle Rally.
Haha, maybe someday!! :)
Led her talk
Jillian.....👍❣
I miss when Overlandbound went wheelin.
Still do!
2016 and she has "a little over 46,000" miles on it. Wow!
49,000 now ;)
Stumbled upon this doing research on 3rd gen Tacos. What a great build! I really like her philosophy of only upgrading AFTER finding weaknesses and areas for improvement. It seems like people fall into the trap of seeing what other people are running, or all the cool stuff online, and go hog wild on mods and gear that they may not need. I also have experience in the Jeep and mountainbiking communities, and you see a lot of that there as well. It becomes more about the gear than just getting out there and doing it! (I DO like gear though, haha) The whole overlanding thing appeals to me too, I've recently learned about it, and saw a lot of it while I was out in Moab earlier this year.
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge there's not much opportunity to do that in the Northeast. I want to do some exploring and mountainbiking/camping trips in 2018, and if I don't get another vehicle by then, I'm actually thinking of setting up my '07 Volvo XC70 for it. At least I won't need a RTT, plenty of space to stretch out in the back of the car if I can store the gear/bikes on the outside. I've done a few tent camping/ biking trips in NH and VT over the past two years, and the XC has served me well.
Thanks Michael! Come visit us out west!! :)))
Great rig! Is that an ESEE 5 on her belt?
Good Eye! Yes, it is!
you could have gotten a 2016 SR 4x4 manual and built up from there with AT's, skids, sliders, ARB lockers, lift, shocks, fogs, winch, metal bumpers, whatever, and started off with a lot more money for mods to build the exact taco you wanted.
Awesome rig! Ever run into a situation where you needed to use the extra fuel on your bed rack?
I haven't run out of gas yet, but I will say that having extra fuel on the vehicle allows for more options. There have been a few instances in Death Valley where it has allowed me to risk taking a longer route...instead of the B-line back to the gas station.
So how did you register the truck in California if you bought it in Colorado?
I wanted to see the rack. I need some ideas and I know hers is pretty sweet. Is there a part 2 of this rig walk around?
....I mean this in the most non-sexual way, I swear.
Yes, there is a Part 2 coming :)
@@Charlie_Foxtrot_ I was just about to ask which rack you were referring to. Glad it was the correct and acceptable topic.
Weight will make a difference in sand and mud you dig in. Tires you lose hp with bigger tires. I know people that had 4 tires in the back they have 2 tires they get 3 flats.
Stock Bump Stops, need to swap those bricks out.
one of the best videos to date, awesome material, have a tacoma myself for about 2 1/2 years still got a stock bumper got sliders about to get tires but i did get baja roof racks and cvt rtt. love the setup, have a 4runner in the same color LOVE IT much love to all the OB members worldwide, doesnt matter what you drive, do some research to be safe and get out and explore. OB# member #2590.
Toyota Family! Thank you for the kind comments!
What size tires and how much lift with the stage 6?
i will give you Americans all of our Landcruiser 70's if we can have Tacomas...
Yo, is that a AR mag on her hip!? Hellz yeah.
Haha, not quite :) It's a knife
What brand knife?! Haha
Esse 5?
Jillian, a new subscriber here. I notice your sporting a knife on your belt. If I may ask, what is the make and model? I looks similar to the "FIRSTEDGE 5150" model.
Did the "Expedition Overland" series. Provide the inspiration for using the "ICON 6" suspension for your vehicle? Cheers, Mate.
Thanks for watching! The knife is an ESEE-5. They weren't the inspiration, but I do remember seeing their setup in their early episodes...the product highlight didn't hurt :)
what year is this taco?
I wish she would have xc told us what size tire she ended uo going with
Instead of a winch, I carry an 8,000 pound rated come-along, with rope and tow straps...
I have a similar set up... winch would be a nice upgrade, but I'm just not there yet.
Jeep XJ 😂🤣
what come-along do you have? I was looking at the "More Power Puller" by yeth.
JET 286530K 3-Ton Wire Rope Grip Puller with Cable
I used a cheapie come-a-long once that I kept in the back of my Jeep. The thing scared the crap out of me, I thought I was going to lose my fingers when I had to release the tension to reset. Hi-Lifts can be scary too, keep your head away from the handle, and if you're using it on a slider, open the door where the jack sits. I remembered to do that while jacking my Jeep ZJ, it saved me a big dent in the door when the letting the vehicle down.
The winches have come way down in price, but unless you drive a Jeep Wrangler, it's the cost of the bumper that kills you. It's ludicrous how cheap/easy it is to put a winch on a Jeep.
Great setup. Im taking the same approach for my FJ...but damn those bumper upgrades are making me feel like a crack addict! OB#6482
It's never ending!!
