Seriously. Some of these guys in the offroading community spend 10-20k on suspension and gatekeep/scoff so hard when you ask questions on a more affordable way to get more clearance or run bigger tires. "Do it the RIGHT way (spend 10k minimum) or don't even bother bro!" I can understand buying quality parts so you don't have to replace it in a few years but not everyone wants a long travel 18inch suspension and 4.0 gas racing shocks with a 4 link and full cage😂
@19:41 the second number is a percentage of the width of the tread (not the height of the rim). It’s a ratio of width to height on the rubber portion only, it’s helpful for dialing in performance on race cars but a total PITA for off-road stuff because it’s totally non-intuitive.
I chose a level-lift (spacer lift). It stopped the infamous Tacoma rear sag, allowed for 33" tires, and along with the Timbren blocks, I eliminated trailer sag and vehicle sway. In addition, I upgraded the shocks and a couple of other articulation items that were not under the warranty as such.. This has given me clearance, a bit more capability, but has also retained ride quality, and the factory warranty. Maybe when the truck is beyond its 5 year , 100, 000 km warranty, I may do additional work. The work done allows me to do a lot more with the truck, but I've never been into extreme off-road or rock-climbing.
I'm ordering a 23 TRD Offroad, I want to do some moderate trails (currently NH, moving to CO), how has your experience with that setup and have you done anything else since you left this comment? What articulation items were not under warranty? Upper control arms?
Mike, Just want to let you know that I absolutely love the content that you're putting out. Between Tacomas, EDC, camping and firearms, you have all the bases covered. Your EDC philosophy is spot on! Keep it up!!!
if the tires were 285, and you didnt have a wheel spacer, would they still rub? Considering those wheels, and I thought the negative offset would be good enough.
Wow thank you so much for such a great explanation. Been overwhelmed with all the different things to think about and consider. I finally feel like I have a grasp on the full picture.
I swap wheels to trd pro wheels that have a 1 inch spacer built in with the offset. I'm just about to install OME lift with heavy front and medium rear load rating. I'm replacing the upper control arm too because they are longer to keep them out of a bind at full droop, I just might add hydraulic bump stops as well to save all this from a hard hit in a hole. Nice advice
Good vlog, but my buddy works with king and what I was told is the Reservoir is not more for heat its more design not to mix the gas and oil causing shock fade and rapid heating
@@maen7321 removing the front sway bar gives more articulation/flex to the front end. Also, deletes a small amount of weight. No more than going on a diet though 😂
Nice, nice set tup. If I missed you saying this, apologies, but one thing you might want to think about is replacing the front driver side needle bearing with a clamshell bushing. The diff drop should help some I would think but the clamshell bushing might save you some headaches later.
Great video!!! Work hard play hard 👍 took my sway bar off on my FJ with King Shocks and notice no difference, shocks seem to be stiff enough to handle the swing.
Good video, I use fluid film on my whole frame as it's a factory replacement, I have a 2nd gen tacoma and the original frame was shot.I pretty much spray everything, frame, leaf pack, control arms, axel, stuff works great!
Very informative video. It put everything that I researched on my own together. It seems like adding just one leaf would allow for the addition of a tent in the bed. I have the same truck you have. Colorado seems like a great place for off raid enthusiasts.
Thanks for the video. Pardon my question coz I have zero knowledge on your subject. I have a 2018 Tacoma (not 4WD only 2WD) XP edition Double Cab short bed, if I will put a trunk bed rack and the iKamper mini on top of it. Do I need to upgrade the suspensions and tire size? If so, by how much? can you please tell me exactly what I need to tell the shop tech and what specific kit to buy? Approximately how much to budget including labor? I won't use my truck on difficult terrain (deserts and inclined roads) but mostly on flat roads and slightly inclined roads in the Tennessee Smokey mountains. Much appreciated.
I don't get the comment about body let's not giving any more ground clearance. Body lift allows you to fit larger tires, and larger tires are really the only thing that will give you more genuine ground clearance without messing up your CV angles. A lot of people go with 3-inch lift which really plays havoc with their suspension geometry. I think it's actually much wiser, and better Offroad, to do a modest 1 and 1/2 to 2 inch suspension lift, and then another inch to inch and 1/2 with a body lift. If you do that, and the cab Mount chop, you could fit pretty large tires, and maintain suspension geometry that's closer to stock.
I have nearly identical lift on my taco. Only difference is I have the light racing UCA's ......... Installed it all in my garage over a weekend and saved a ton on installation costs.
How much exactly did you cut off on the cab mount chop? I had the same thing done to my truck but I don’t think they cut off near enough. The tire still comes really close. I think they should’ve cut off a lot more kind of resembling the work that was done to your truck. And I have 285’s

Hey so I live in Colorado as well about by black forest. I have a 2000 tacoma running 31s open diffs and a small lift, and I was wondering where you go mostly in our state for offroading.
Couple of questions for you Mike. 1) In an earlier video you had talked about some HAM stuff. Do you have your license or are you planning on any sort of comms for the Taco? 2) Any particular reason why you went with the TRD Off-Road as oppose to the TRD Pro? Any regrets with not going with a Pro or with your TRD Off-Road? I'm currently going back and forth as to which I'm going to purchase here in the near future.
Yup, I do have my Technician's license, and do have some comms in there as well. No real reason to waste money on a pro if you are planning on modifying the suspension on it anyway. Basically would be an extra $10k for a fake hoodscoop and blacked out headlights (both of which I do like though). If you have the extra coin for the Pro though, nothing wrong with that. But definitely an Offroad or a Pro - not a Sport.
Hey Mike, new subscriber, just bought a 2018 Taco Limited, want to lift and add tires and rims, I love your setup, would you mind sharing what offset you have on your 16's? Trying to accomplish a similar look. Thanks!
Did you adjust the speedometer/odometer settings in the truck? Do you notice any acceleration loss with the size tire you run compared to stock? Any thoughts of changing gears in rear end? Love your truck looking to do similar mods to my 2016 TRD off road.
My boss got a lifted Tacoma on 35s. He says he regrets getting 35s on it. It got slower, gas mileage went up and he says it fucked up his gearbox. It's a bad ass truck tho. If you want 35s, you should consider changing your axel gear ratio

What’s the point of getting the TRD off road edition if you’re just gonna swap out the suspension and add a lift and new tires ? Why not just get the sr5 snd save a few grand
Ok so Iv lifted a ton of vehicles in my day all straight axel tho. I’m curious why do all the big name company’s like icon and king only lift Toyota’s 3 inches? I’m not saying I want to go higher I’m just curious what the reasoning is behind it? I see other not so good company’s that have 6in lifts granted it’s all drop brackets and no coil overs. I no king makes longer coil overs. Do they just not offer them on Toyota’s bc of the independence front suspension and with the control arms and cv shafts 3 is the max you can go with a coil?
Watching a few of you videos to see what your running. Don’t thing my 35 year old rig will fit in with your group, but I do have a full rear axle out of a 2nd gen Tacoma, and my bed is about the same length though. Still a Toyota so maybe that counts for something. Spacers under leaf springs aren’t really a good idea, seen them get tossed out during wheel spin and wheel hop. I haven’t heard of those shops, were in Colorado are they. I run wheel spacers and my rig and never felt comfortable running a spacer larger than 1.5”, mainly because of wear on from hub bearings. But I do have a solid axle with V6 brake upgrade so I’m currently running 1” spacers. When I get new wheels I will measure back spacing an adjust accordingly so I can delete the spacer all together.
Love the video content you put out. Keep it up. I was hoping to get some advice on want would be a good start for me since I recently purchased a 2019 Tacoma trd pro. Since it has the fox suspension what other things would you suggest to implement to have a better stance. Eventually will begin my adventures overlanding, put for now just trails for hunting and fishing. I will be adding bigger tires. The current ones are crap
do you have a favorite recommendation for a high clearance steel front and rear bumper with Winch plate and rock sliders? and in your opinion the best adjustable height bed rack to have support for a tent?
Do not know a lot about this but what weights are you running in different modes? I would assume you have to plan for add on weights like bumpers and racks. Do you have to adjust anything when fully loaded versus everyday around town weights?
Love this truck! I just picked up an 08’ with a spacer lift of 2 inches and 33” tires as well! I have been getting some steering wheel shaking when I’m going down the road with it and I’m hoping an alignment/ balance with help solve that but is there any other component(s) you would recommend to help tighten up the steering?
@@itsajoke631 no, you can go off road with the stock suspension but you will be limited to easier terrain, if you want to do harder stuff then you should lift it with bigger tires.
So i am about to get a tacoma, and wanted your opinion. I think i want one with a manual transmission, and i know yours is an automatic. What would you recommend? Or is it just personal preference. P.S. I intend to set it up for a camping/overland rig as well! thank in advance!
Good to know. I just bought the KO2 on 17” wheels. I would like to start overlanding sometime this year but I know the stock fox suspension will need some up armor i.e upper control arms, and some stronger leaf springs. Thoughts?

Yeah if I was regularly airing down much lower, and doing more rock crawling type stuff a lot - it might be worth it. I'm airing down mostly to smooth out the ride, with the secondary benefit of adding traction most of the time.
Hey Mike, noticed you had your rear shock reservoirs installed separate from the shock. The 2.0 that I received have the billet piece that keeps the reservoir together with the shock. How did you manage to separate and install the reservoir from the shock? I hope that makes sense
Nice truck etc. Now, show me to the money tree you have somewhere. Guns, truck mods, the finest gear. There gotta be a money tree somewhere. Now where is it!!

Question: I’m about to get 33s and ICON suspension installed on my Tacoma you think I would need a diff drop/spacers to keep the drive-line and CV angle closer to stock? I would hate to stress those components....Most people I talk to tell me that the diff drop is not worth doing and in most cases can cause damage. Do I really need the diff drop with 33s?
Hey Mike thanks for all the information another great video as usual Happy Wheeling out there in Colorado,Im in Va.hard to find great places to wheel around here.
If I’m not looking for real off-road performance and mainly just looks to clear 33’s, would I need upper control arms to go with a 3 in spacer lift, and do spacer lifts put stress on everything
No, you don’t need a new control arm for 33’s and you don’t even need a 3” spacer. You could go pretty much stock just don’t go stupid on the width (like over 11.50”). 33”x10.50 or 255/85R16 fit without any major mods. Anything you do like spacers is gonna limit the range of articulation, especially on the front IFS.
Hangers and Shackles are not actually the same. I was referring to hangers in the video, not shackles - though both components are often changed out / upgraded. Here is a pretty good breakdown - www.generalspringkc.com/Leaf_Spring_Shackles_Hangers_s/2014.htm
Last Line Of Defense my misunderstanding to what you were referring too. Never the less I enjoy your videos keep them coming love the overlanding/campings
Intend on doing some overlanding and doing tires and suspension upgrades AT SOME POINT, is it worth getting trd pro if you plan on replacing suspension?
I mean it's not really worth it even if you are not intending to replace the suspension, haha. But if you are intending on replacing the suspension, the only real reason to get a pro is for the 'status' or for the more blacked out headlights.
Last Line Of Defense that’s crazy. It looked just like your truck, same lights, bed rack and tent. Well if you ever wanna come check out the Big Horns hit me up on instagram.
I just want to clarify when you were talking about tire size the 75 is actually 75% the width of your 295 not the percent of the rim size as you stated
Correct - not sure what I said, but if it was not that, I may have just fumbled some words. If I recall correctly I was just trying to explain the height in relation to the rim, in the sense of a 285/75r17 will be taller than a 285/75r16 - as the height of the wheel does factor into the height of the tire (in addition / relation to the 75 part, which as you stated is a percentage of the width of the tire). Whew... haha
Its refreshing to hear someone say you do not need to get a lift this expensive or as high quality, a spacer lift might be just as good. Great video

I got a 2015 double cab long box limited. Way over my budget, but the wife says we can afford it, and I LOVE it.
2016 Tacoma, worse decision of my life. I want my Tundra back
I have a 98' and I'm saving up for a new one atm lol
Hey Mike, noticed you had your rear shock reservoirs installed separate from the shock. The 2.0 that I received have the billet piece that keeps the reservoir together with the shock. How did you manage to separate and install the reservoir from the shock? I hope that makes sense
Nice truck etc. Now, show me to the money tree you have somewhere. Guns, truck mods, the finest gear. There gotta be a money tree somewhere. Now where is it!!
chuckv5150 I know I’m jealous. I’d say it’s the holster making side-gig that feeds his “fun” budget.
Haha, let me know if you find it! Meanwhile, I'll keep working three jobs. ;)
10-4 bro. You keep pumping out the vids w/ the cool gear, we'll keep watching them. BTW, I noticed your new friend. Ya gotta introduce her to your peeps bro. You'll garner a gazillion views I'm sure.
Cheers.
So, what is the overall lift in inches for the front and back? Would you recommend a 6 inch lift where the crossmember would have to be cut.?
I do not see a reason for a 6 inch lift, no. This is around 2 - 3 front and rear.
I think you'll be good either way. My friend has my near exact setup and no diff drop and his rides fine.
david legaspi what is ur mpg woth the icon and 33s?
Curious if you had to do any cab/mount chopping to avoid the rub from the larger tires? Thanks.
Also...maybe I missed it, but how much overall lift did you get with that suspension? I'm looking at the same one.
I did do a cab mount chop and some fender trimming. Achieved about 2.5 - 3" of lift.
@@LastLineOfDefense - Great...do you happen to have an instructional video on how you did the cab mount chop and fender trimming?
Awesome video, Mike. Can you drop a link to your spacers? Thanks!
Hey Mike thanks for all the information another great video as usual Happy Wheeling out there in Colorado,Im in Va.hard to find great places to wheel around here.
Size (diameter) of the shock means the size of the piston and not the reservoir size.
The diameter of the shock body, correct. If I said something different it wasn't intentional - my bad.
Well done Mike, I got a lot from this video.
Nice lighting for the arms
LOVE your truck!! What's your mpg after lifted and bigger tires on the daily drive?
William Wang not good..
"Hangers" is a shackle for proper terminology. Great video always love your details
GREAT informative video Mike! Thx
Are your Fox shocks rebuildable? And what kind of mileage can one get before rebuild?
ML Gomez yes they are. According to Fox it’s between 10k to 50k pending usage. In most cases 50k seems pretty close to normal.
Robb M Thx for the reply.
Hey Mike, what rock sliders do you have? I dont remember seeing you talk about them in a different video.
They are the Pelfreybilt sliders with flare / kickout and top plates.
Nice, thanks take care
Maybe an incredibly dumb question, but is your spare tire stock, or is it also a KO2? Wondering if your KO2s would fit in the spare location. Thanks.
Who makes that grille?
Intend on doing some overlanding and doing tires and suspension upgrades AT SOME POINT, is it worth getting trd pro if you plan on replacing suspension?
I mean it's not really worth it even if you are not intending to replace the suspension, haha. But if you are intending on replacing the suspension, the only real reason to get a pro is for the 'status' or for the more blacked out headlights.
Thought so LOL
Appreciate the reply my man.
Should do a rig update and a tire review of the felcons
Has any of the suspension component/set up mess up your warranty?
I just see you driving down HWY 59 just south of Gillette Wyoming !!
Haha musta been an imposter, I haven't been out to Wyoming in a year.
Last Line Of Defense that’s crazy. It looked just like your truck, same lights, bed rack and tent. Well if you ever wanna come check out the Big Horns hit me up on instagram.
2.0 and 2.5 are referring to the shock body diameter, not the remote reservoir diameter.
correct
Did you need to lengthen your drive shafts, brake lines, and/or raise your proportioning valve?
Not unless you go past 2.5” of lift
hey sir, thanks for the good info. What size is your awning?
Great video! Cool options with zero pretension!
I just want to clarify when you were talking about tire size the 75 is actually 75% the width of your 295 not the percent of the rim size as you stated
I love your videos though!!!!
Whew... haha
What rack are you running on the roof? I'm sure you have told us what it is before
It's a Prinsu rack
