It is tough to compare games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2, which have considerable differences in game scope. The 2018 God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison was brutal, but it is even more this time. It is impossible to please both sides. But I'm inclined to choose BG3. The game is, in a sense, more profound and gives more experiences to players during the journey.

I'm so glad Zeke brought up the Twisted Metal TV show. It was a freakin' blast and so unexpected. Fun, silly action.
i wasn't feeling it in the beginning but loved it by the end. felt a lot like Ash vs Evil Dead series, had a similar weird vibe.
PeopleMakeGames definitely deserve Creator of the Year nomination. Their deep-dive videos are definitely worth checking out.

Only ones I disagree with the group on are soundtrack for XVI and BG3 narrative. It's crazy to act like stuff like Find the Flame, Away, or My Star isn't right up with the music in BG3 and AW2 imo. Many more forgettable tracks in BG3 and while AW2 has great tracks they are SUPER game specific and are much more sparse as a necessary part of the game's audio design.
BG3 story isn't really the focus to the point I think it's one of the weakest parts of the game especially in Act 3. The story functions as a device to push players to interact with the amazing characters and explore the world with it's cool combat encounters.
Yeah I find the soundtrack related categories the hardest honestly because even with critics it’s always somewhat personal preference based, I guess that’s how it is with arts. I agree though.
Narrative is not only about story. The player agency in the story can matter too
Their whole discussion during those categories screamed Recency Bias Frames.
All those e sports stuff and probably less than 20 percent of the people voting know who any of those people are.

I'm so unimaginably excited at the idea of Nintendo fans seeing baldurs gate win and being like "what the fuck is this game"
I just can't stand Nintendo being in every award thing with the same fucking IP being rinsed and repeated on some absolute scam of a console. Cool that people enjoy their shit, but good lord the toxicity of that company as a whole.

I’m a lifelong Nintendo console owner since the N64 but also a playstation and PC guy as well. I love Totk a little more than BG3 but Bg3 is just simply more impactful in the gaming industry and is going to win goty. However I dont like the toxicity between both fanbases and its just weird
In terms of narrative it is really interesting discussion if you bring books. Because AWII is the one that wins all sorts of literary prizes and is studied in classes, essays are written about AWII significance for literature, and if just one to read you probably read that, but BG3 is sort of ASoIaF series of books, it has giant fandom and fanfics are started, and theories on social media are constantly thrown around, groups nerding out about it. Based AWII later an Oscar-winning movie is made, and HBO makes series based on BG3.
Same kinda goes for GOTY discussion, imo, what games represent. With 90% critics vote it is most certainly AWII.
Although, if to add something, I think out Zelda, BG3 and AWII, first two would be re-played many years after, for different reasons (but cmon, modding is one of them), and AWII, while also being re-played, would be the game that is "ahh, yes, that one was a great one"
...and, honestly, if AWII wins best art direction, best narrative and best game direction, how come it wouldn't win GOTY?
The same way elden ring won game of the year but the majority of the awards were won by God of wars ragnarok last year
@@Vamparina413 I get it, but to me Elden Ring was unique ....idk how to formulate it properly, BG3 and Elden Ring are very different cases.
Also, to the point I was making, Elden Ring won game direction and art direction, while God of War only narrative. I think, it would be weird, if game direction and art direction and narrative (3 major awards) are won by one game, and GOTY by another. In case of Elden Ring it checks, 2 out 3 -> GOTY.

But somehow BG3 is GOTY, while winning only community (questionable) and RPG (for sure). It is pretty clear it won't be GOTY, but somehow the common knoweldge it will, a lot of people are setting themselves up a bit with BG3, especially BG3 fandom. Like Cohh here literally says that Act3 falls apart (which is questionable harsh opinion, but ok), but then votes for BG3, does it make sense? But what do I know, I'll probably smear crap all over my face when it wins, like that goblin in act1.
Anyways. I just found discussion about books when deciding on best narrative, though I'll comment something. Game Awards are kinda weird marketing show, presenting like Game Oscars, which I don't like really.
@@nickrubin7312 well cohh blasted his way through bg3 playing like 12 hours every day. Act 3 had issues on launch and for a few days but larian quickly fixed it with multiple patches and hotfixes. The narrative of act 3 being broken is false
I don't think he meant it's broken, but that the quality of the story takes a nosedive in the last act. The ending was not satisfying at all due to the lack of a proper tapestry ending despite the voice lines being there, stupid conclusions to some of the companions' storylines like Karlach. Even the "patched" Karlach ending is silly, she just monologues for 2 minutes while Wyll stands there like a moron making faces (they didn't get Wyll's voice actor back to record lines). Even if Larian fixed all the bugs the ending would still be bad just like their games have always had until a "GOTY" rework. @@bluemoon1716
44:08 If Forza won that would be ridiculous and show that their expert panel has no clue about racing games. The game has mostly negative reviews on Steam due to issues in many different areas. Even the nomination itself is already controversial within the racing game community.

Would Hogwarts Legacy have been as popular if it wasn't Harry Potter based? Probably not. But you can say the same about Super Mario Bros. Wonder. If that game was about an animal that could shapeshift, there's no way in hell a game called Wobadufi Wonder would've made it onto any GOTY category.
I'm surprised nobody on DF advocated for Star Wars for Best Action Adventure when it has deeper combat and traversal mechanics than all the other nominanees. (IMO)
It should be either industry fail presented by shareholders or presented by CEO's across the whole industry

Yeah Alan wake 2 and rogue trader at the last leg of the year can be rough for awards, but regardless they are great!

Something that would stop the indy discussion is if they just said game made by small team. Either less than 50 or less than 10 people. Something like that, because otherwise we will just go on and on about this category
Idk i genuinely think its worth specifically highlighting games that were made by independant developers on a relativley small budget, and the distinction that they aren't owned by a huge billion dollar corporation is important.

God, I hate Esports categories. Like most people vote for something they either somewhat heard about or their favorite Esport they watch. Like why tf is this a voting if there is no way for it to be anything but popularity contest?

I don't think MMO's or other games as a service model games should be in the community support category, it is not a achievement or step beyond for those, it is the basic premise of their business model.

Says something about general FFXIV sentiment that this is the first time I've seen the main FFXIV subreddit respond to the nomination with "Nope, doesn't deserve it this year."
I'll be curious to see if BG3 sweeps, or if it gets GOTY and the other categories get spread around more. With some exceptions, seems like a lot of strong nominees in all the categories.
to be fair when it comes to XIV it's at the end of expansion development cycle, it's less about sentiment for the game (there seems to be a LOT of interest in Dawntrail) and more just the fact that a long-term service MMO has a different interest cycle than games with more frequent updates like Fortnite/Genshin
Anyone saying ff14 doesn't "deserve" to win it this year is an idiot following equally idiotic content creators spouting nonsense. The game content wise is exactly in the same state it has been in the past, but it's not getting a huge surge of new players following a wow exodus.
Sure you can say you didn't like Endwalker as much as you liked Shadowbringers. But to say the game deserves the award less now than last year is ridiculous.

The convo around Hogwarts kind of bugged me. "If it wasn't Harry Potter would it be that good?" You can say that about everything on this list except for Allen Wake II and BG3. If it wasn't a Zelda, would the game had gotten as much attention? If it wasn't Mario, who would care about another platformer? "Enter Generic Zombie shooter" for RE4:R. What a contrived argument. Expectation matters. Brand names inherently give off expectations, scope and market viability, which all have to be considered for many games in today's market.
TOTK wouldn't have gotten as much attention, but it would've been praised for its physics & construction mechanics. Meanwhile, the notion AW2 has a good narrative only makes sense because it's linked to everything prior. Detach it from external titles, or deprive it of the franchise entirely, it's not great to follow.
Hogwarts legacy is a mediocre open world game with good but repetitive combat, little to no enemy variety, a bland, predictable story and weak rpg elements. It’s a 7 on it’s best day, with the score going either up or down depending on how much you like Harry Potter.

To me, the biggest disappointment / biggest industry fail this year is how pathetic a LOT of developers were trying SO hard to bring down BG3 from it's success, saying it shouldn't be the new standard. That's unheard of

Best Score and Music should have had Hogwarts Legacy instead of Legend of Zelda. It may not of won, but it at least should have been nominated.
I don't think BG3 shits the bed nearly as bad as cohh makes it seem in terms of story. The writing is fine, and I personally like the ending.
Also I think best direction is the award they're giving to Zelda.

He played and finished before patch 1, so he doesn't know about some improvements, and he had some issues in the end, that's fair and square.
But, I also think groupthink getting to him, idk why he said it falls apart, that was harsh. It isn't the greatest of the written stories and has some issues, but it's not like story goes to shit or something. It is also the story that almost has no progression in Act1, so if Act3 falls apart, Act1 doesn't even gather? Act2 storywise is probably the best, and the most linear tbh, the most Bioware-like of BG3 (not a bad thing, it's good, just saying). I also think, that in the end of his playthrough fell apart in the end, too many reloads for choppy experience, chat backseat intensified to the unseen levels, it was wild, a bit unwatchable tbf.
Probably the most important thing in here is that this harsh opinion by no-name on the Internet - alright, if content creator - gotta bring receipts instead of buzz words. Just imo.
If Cohh says the game is not finished or falls apart, there will 1000-2000 drones that would spread this subjective opinion as their own, and honestly it is a bit annoying.
Not that people have opinion, but because under every post / comment that just like the game, there would be some person repeating verbatim the things content creator said.

Honestly, people really need to stop saying things about Cities Skylines 2 if they havent played it. Yes, there are issues, especially with performance, but if you get rid of the very badly optimized settings (which are few), it actually runs fine. I have done multiple cities already, my current one is at 350k population and I am having a lot of fun with it.
People are just too dumb to do graphic settings. True story: I talked about Alan Wake 2 with a friend and he said: "I have a 3060 and the game ran terrible with max settings on my PC, so I bought it on Playstation and played there." - This to me means: "I cant do the settings, it has to run on max, so instead I play it on low settings." - How does that make any sense?

Hey, can't harp on Zeke by himself. Cohh was right there for over an hour trying to explain why an ARPG is not an... RPG? -- Also, they both have the same conversation about it every year for at least the last 3 or 4 years.
You know looking at these categories and i feel like it's missing something, like best gameplay, best combat, you know? The most important aspect everyone plays games for.
That's sort of what best Action game is there for EDIT: Also, I do think it's kind of reductive to say that's what "everyone plays games for" given there are entire genres of games that don't have combat at all that are wildly popular.
these days with gaming as big as it is, most people are not playing games for gameplay or challenge. they are playing games for a cinematic experience that they are in control of. this is easily seen in game sales. it's the rise of the casuals.

I never cared for Alan Wake 2, more probably because I wasn't ever interested in the original Alan Wake. Someday I may take a dip into it but I'm not a huge fan, really.

If Hogwarts wouldn't have been attached to harry potter I would still have LOVED it. I can already tell you right now that IF there was ZERO drama attached to that game with the author of hte books I can tell you it would have been on the GOTY list. you can't fuckign tell me it was so meh that it didn't evne get nominated ONCE?
Compared to other games that came out yes. The game to most people was boring and uninteresting. To me i disagree but like i said other games this year were on another level.
FF 16 does not deserve to be nominated for best rpg. Lies of P is more of an rpg than it is. What semblance of rpg systems there are in 16 were shoehorned in because of the series' legacy, and they add nothing to the game. They arguably make the game worse.

I like Mario as much as the next guy, but Wonder looks so out of place in the game of the year category. I'm convinced it's only there because Mario nostalgia + strong recency bias. That's pretty lame. Personally I think Dave the Diver and SF6 are orders of magnitude more deserving of goty than either Mario Wonder or RE4
I disagree. Mario wonder defined 2d platforms and how they can be and work. It kinda also had the weird wifi online gameplay and it was semi received well. Mario wonder is nothing like any of the new super Mario bros games. Re4 shouldn’t be on the list its a remake
The awards have a lot of recency bias, I bet if Alan wake and Tiktok swap releases, everyone would raving about Tiktok, for me all of the games this year were fire! I am OK with anyone of those 6 winning, my personal vote for goty is RPG... Errhh I mean BG3😅
I was kinda disappointed. Last week you guys said that you would commit sometime to the show this week to talk about WoW. The Race to World First in retail, Blizzcon, your Classic HC progress/experience & maybe thoughts on Classic Plus aka Season of Discovery coming Nov 30th.

I’m assuming they wanted to get the awards stuff out of the way since it’ll be here in a couple weeks, but you never know with their scheduling.
What inept industry people came up with this list of games? The fact Hogwarts isn’t nominated for anything at all is a capital crime. Maybe the industry thinks there’s too much controversy with J.K. but this is the awards to the video game not the IP creator. Everyone is passing the buck, covering each other’s asses. This year easily had 100+ 9-10/10 games and we only see the same 8 maybe a few others mentioned here. Do better next time. Just make it more organized, fair and structured like the Oscars. Best ESports team and Coach just need to go who cares… I suppose it hardly matters, we watch for the epic trailers anyway lol. Can’t wait to see what Elden Ring is cooking up

i love how they just coped about hogwarts not getting any mentions, as if it never existed because of woke politics, and their cope was "well .. because they didn't denounce and decry the author as born again hitler, its their fault !" . also alan wake 2 is overrated trash, giving that game any sort of praise is hilarious, its trash.
The only thing I'll give Hogwarts is that the music was amazing. Everything else was just mediocre and half-baked ideas that needed more development time and better talent.
That said, yeah Alan Wake 2 is simply a recency bias.
Hogwarts was an ok game, nothing special if you aren't some big potter nerd. It did seem amazing after having such a drought of good games in 2022 though. AW2 is a niche game that is very well made - but its still niche.

Games are subjective and everyone has different opinions. I own both Hogwarts and Alan Wake 2. Hogwarts was a good realisation of the HP world and lore but as an actual game it fell short for me and I found it quite average. Alan Wake 2 for me was amazing, with great story, excellent world design and some truly superb graphics. Both games have their audiences but you likely wont find too many people who think that both Hogwarts and Alan Wake 2 are excellent as they are aimed at different audiences really.
Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or what? AW2 has a 92% Google reviews score, 87/100 Metacritics score with a 8.8/10 user rating. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean your opinion is any more valid. Calling a game trash just because you didn't like it is the definition of a trash opinion. :)
