  • This solo says a lot. I think Jeff Tweedy wanted to show people that he could do loud guitar stuff as well as anyone else - that he don't need no sideman. I think he's right!

      Agree!
      Story goes Tweedy was really hitting a wall with his drug abuse at this time and they could only get through 2 takes - I *think* the version on the record is take 2.

      Chad Long I saw Jeff play a solo show in Melbourne Australia earlier this year. A guy in the crowd yelled out Marquee Moon which seemed random at the time. During a break between songs a little later in the show, Jeff impressively busted out the first couple of minutes of Marquee Moon on his acoustic. Makes sense now!!

    The band had discovered Bill Fay not too long before this album came out, and if you go through Bill Fay's guitar work, you'll see where much of Wilco's inspiration came from during this time. If I had to pick one particular song out of Bill Fay, I would say "I Hear You Calling" would be an interesting one to compare to Wilco, particularly their Sky Blue Sky period.

    Looks like Tweedy uses a capo on second fret when playing this song live. Probably gives him access to some 2nd fret open strings when he’s in the zone.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah I watched a couple of live clips when I was working on it. Looks like Nels plays it open, and Tweedy is capoed. But I swear the album version is no capo - I listen really close at 60% speed, going in 3 second chunks. That’s my method 🤓

    Well he did have Nels Cline or is that just live? I love this solo too though regardless it’s obviously very expressive reminds me of Hendrix or Neil Young. Definitely a singer songwriters kind of solo. It’s very expressive whereas too many guitar solos are simply impressive. This solo tells you exactly what the man in the song is feeling and it’s painful. The album version is one of my favorite Wilco moments. They nailed it. This was their peak in my book. Will always miss Jay though he was just a great musician. Piano or guitar.
