I have an ultra and medium rod that I bought in the 80s when they had a lifetime warranty and still use them regularly to this day. When I bought them I picked one up at the store and bent it from almost end to end and the sales guy was like "what are you doing!!!" I said "if it's gona break I want it to do it here", LOL
When i was a kid back in the 80's these were considered top of the line. You used to be able to bend the tip and touch it to the end of the grip. They used to have a pic of that right on the price tag.
I just bought the 6’6” 4 piece travel rod and when I finished lining up the reel I did a quick flex test and the second section from the top snapped in half 😢. I was completely in shock. I went right back to Walmart and got the 2 piece instead I couldn’t trust the 4 piece anymore after that incident sadly. Anybody else have similar trust issues?
The four piece travel rod has a chronic defect with the tip section constantly flying loose. No matter how firmly I attached the tip section to my 6’6” 4-piece, medium, UglyStik travel rod, I get about three or four casts out of it at most before the tip section flies off the rod during the cast. This is a chronic defect. Go look for reviews of the four-piece travel rod and you’ll see a lot of other people having the exact same experience. Even worse than this rod having a chronic defect is the fact that UglyStik customer service categorically refuses to stand behind their products. I wrote to UglyStik three separate times and advised that although I have been a fan of their rods in the past, this one could not stay together to be usable and asked that they address it under warranty. I never got a response. My experience has been very common among people who have bought that rod and I’ve not heard of anyone ever being able to get customer service on the warranty for this rod.
I have this rod from the combo for my ultralight break setup and 4 years and no issues. The reel is cheap but was $10 more for the combo over the rod. My father in law has these rods in ultra light that are 12 years old as well as 6.6’ medium casting and multiple 7’ mh spinning that he uses for small catfish as well as small surf bay fishing at the beach. They aren’t the most sensitive ever but he catches more fish than most people and has had 5 gx2 rods for over 9 years and all are still working as expected.
I love my Ugly Stiks for bass. I have a variety of lighter rods that I use for catching bait, but I like to keep the bass so I only use my Uglys for them. I was able to special order black/pink Uglys to give to my daughters.
Hell yea they’re still good own 4 gx2’s …. 2 med heavy , 1 medium , 1 ultra lite …. Don’t get me started on my ugly stik avengers edition dock runner … I’d be tearing em up on my kayak
Great Video! I'm looking at getting the gx2 rod and reel combo. I'm not sure on what size I should get? Should I go with the 5', 6', or the 6'6? I am looking to fish trout, crappie and bass. Also not sure what test line I should go with? Do I need braided line for fishing trout? Thank you!!
On the original style Ugly Stick I put a 50 series spinning reel with 20Lb mono on a 5' Ultra Light rod and was catching big 'ol carp on them. It's like a 10-20 minute fight!
My brother a fly fisherman uses G.Loomis , Sage Rods Able reels and a vintage Hardy Brothers reel , his ultra light set up a Shimano quick fire and the Ugly Stick you like ❤
They are affordable and work great, I use them for Bass and Kayak fishing. And if you manage to break one, it does not break the bank and ruin your day. Yes - to me they are worth it!
I have 13 ugly stik open water rods, 6 ice rods, and 4 dock runners. If I am fishing a tough landscape that will break my st croixs, I will bring the uglys because I know they will survive perfectly.
I still have my old ugly stick ultra light rod from the 90's... it is still awesome. My main fishing rods are 3x ugly stick GX2 6'6" medium each with a Penn battle II reel and 15lb braid... I've caught so many fish with the rods in 4-5 years I've had them, its hard to count... That said, I did encounter my first major bummer with any of my ugly sticks just yesterday. After catching hundreds of trout and 1-3lb, I got slammed by a monster bass so hard that my reel exploded out of the lower reel mount, the pole split open and the reel came out... and I lost the fish in the mess... so tomorrow I am going to wrap that portion of my rod with braided line and epoxy it, so that such a thing can never happen again...
I was just looking at these at Bass Pro. Just getting into fishing and I heard you say the combo is a no go because of the reel. Which one would you suggest. Just fresh water fishing on the Tennessee river and on the banks of local lakes. May get into some weekend camping trips also in a few months so that may be a factor.
I literally just bought this with the spinning reel for some 10-15LB fresh water and I can’t wait to try it out. I don’t know what a good reel is just yet so hopefully it’s not terrible
I’m looking at buying this but I’m not sure what size? I’m just looking to fish in ponds and lakes. Do you have a preference in like the length 6’0? Or 6’6? I’m looking to fish at Lake pleasant and Barelett Lake
@@jakenichols6328 if bass is all your fishing for, I think the 6’6” medium fast wound be the best. If u want catfish, carp, and other big species then I’d go with the 6’6” medium heavy

I bought two 6' ugly sticks one last year and one this year. I only have one problem, the rod tips last me about 3 months. I do not use brade I use fluorocarbon 8 pound Berkeley Vanish. I bass fish about every day and make a lot of casts. I do like the rods 😇🙏🎣
I fucking LOVE my Gx2s. My 2 piece 6’6 Medium is just a wonderful rod overall, I do urban fishing mostly and I’ve got it paired with a Penn Fierce 3 in 3000 and it is nearly perfect for what I do. Plus I’m super clumsy and the amount of times it’s accidentally hit my ceiling fan is embarrassingly high. I find the sensitivity to definitely be less than other rods but I mostly watch the tip with my eyes which helps a lot for knowing when you’ve got a bite. If I had to have a rod for the end of the world it would absolutely be the Gx2!
i absolutely love the ugly stik for fishing any type of fish in finland. you can read bites unlike this guy is saying, even with tiny perch it is easy to feel been using these rods since i was a tiny kid, i have ultralight, light and medium rods. they work perfect from tiny creek fishing where you need precise casts to ocean fishing for bigger fish (in norway caught a big cod on the medium rod and it handled it great, bent like crazy! even a 20kg pike will not break the rod, it will bend but never break. sadly i cant find any of these rods in shops anymore... been wanting to get a new one as mine are getting work out after 15+ years

You southern states tends to target crappie much different then the northern fisherman, we don't use the long rods. We are typically jigging for deep schools or throwing float setups into coves, so its not necessary. Grab a short rod tho, and try it out!
@@humbugvideos the shorter medium I think 6 ft has close to what I like in flex but very light and stainless reel seat and hardened guides and I think the best bang for the buck I tried one and ended up buying 4 more

I’ve been using the 4 piece for a long time- albeit I use 6 pound line all the time so I’m never straining the tip super hard….
