- After weeks of threats, speculation, and preparation, the U.S. has set the stage for a multilateral trade war. The White House confirmed Saturday that a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian imports and 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy will officially take effect on Tuesday. The Trump administration has communicated its intentions with the Canadian government, saying the crippling levy will be imposed on virtually all goods travelling south. The exception being Canadian oil and natural gas, which will face a 10 per cent tariff instead. Mackenzie Gray has the latest.
Trump’s incoming tariffs will not only hurt Canadian, Mexican and Chinese consumers, but it will undoubtedly impact the countries’ producers. It won’t stop there though, as the ripple effect will be felt by millions of American families. Reggie Cecchini has more on what Trump's tariffs will mean for political relations, jobs, and the price of everyday goods.
Speaking more about how these tariffs may play out in the days ahead, we're also joined by Canada’s former deputy prime minister and current liberal leadership candidate, Chrystia Freeland, for her perspective on the matter.

There are no permanent friends but permanent interests. Canada could simply buy billions more in military equipment and try to balance the trade rather they would lose billions more in a war they can’t win. All Trump is doing is giving American refineries time to retool their refineries to refine the USA's own oils and another country. In the end, Canada would have to come to the table and fold. It won’t win.

You really need to look up what Energy East actually proposed because it is not what you think. It was an extension of an existing pipeline that currently ends at the refineries and shipping facilities of Montreal it would not have increased oil exports or refinery capacity at all it would have simply spent billions of dollars of taxpayer money to save oil companies a couple of pennies in shipping costs for exports to the US east coast to supply the refineries that used Venezuelan oil after the US sanctioned them. I know it has been mythology in Conservative talking points that people think it would have been amazing and solved all problems but it was a boondoggle right from the beginning which is why it was canceled but the Trans Mountain expansion was not.
A lot of people seem to not understand that refineries have to be set up to process specific kinds of oil and it costs almost as much to retool a refinery to a different type of oil as it does to build a new one. The grade of oil produced in Alberta is not what most European refineries are set up for which is why so little of it is exported there and why even now Europe is still importing some oil from Russia.

We have a lot of resources and almost no supporting industries to capitalize them like the USA does. 2 Aluminum smelters (1 BC and 1 in ON or QC, can't remember), almost no manufacturing left, no oil refineries, and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. We traded long term stability for short term gain.
Our military is extremely small and has to work with old equipment, our RCMP is a shell of what it used to be so people don't trust them, and the feds aren't putting the people of our country first.
Whether you agree with Trump that Canada is letting in drugs (and illegal immigrants) into the USA, or our gov't that says the USA is doing it to Canada, or you think both are bad at border security. Why does our gov't not crack down on it at the border crossing and our ports?

We Canadian consumers will pay the cost of the tariffs when we buy directly as it will just be added to the price we pay by the importers and retailers. But the saddest part will be the Canadian sellers and importers will see this as a perfect opportunity to not only make the consumer pay for the tariffs to protect their profit margins but they will raise their profit margin as well by increasing the price much more than the cost of the tariffs. Easyest time to hide the increase. There has never been an exception to these over charges after tariffs were set in the past, so be rest assured it will be happing again. Hope those Canadian's that adore trump, and there are many in Alberta where I live, when trump said;

Realistically Canada depends a lot more on the US for imports than the other way around. We need to be more independent and build our own industries better. We have the resources to do it we just don't use them. Everything is either harmful to the environment or will offend a small group of people who stomp their feet loudly. It would also promote the expansion of our EV charging infrastructure. In order to minimize inflation, we need to boycott, or avoid buying American made products whenever possible.
