Good reaction. 'Karate' was the lead single from the second album. It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. In the video, as you saw, the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them - look for the reflections in their eyes). They used karate to illustrate this as it is a Japanese martial art and reflects their culture - it also has no backward moves. They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible. Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Moa let the fly go, Mr Miyagi killed it.
Live performances are the best except for Karate. I believe the MV for Karate to me is so artistically beautiful. My favourite parts of the visuals are Moa catching and releasing the fly, Yui destroying the camera lens with her kick which shattered her target, Su's "superman landing" after destroying the boards. I think in a way each of these represents their individual demons that they have just overcame. Finally the ending visual of each of the girls reflection in the eyes after the masks were shattered was epic! Bonus was Moa's smirk just before catching the fly. 🥰
Jerry George while I do love the MV for “Karate”, the live version at Download 2016 helps show not only Su’s stage presence and ability to play with/control the crowd, but also it’s the first time (that I witnessed) of any of them speaking English publicly to the crowd (outside of some lyrics of songs). It really shows that they wanted to interact with their fans outside of Asia and were taking the time to learn English, even with it being fairly basic sentences. It’s also fun to see her evolution of comfort with English from that to Download 2018, interviews last year, etc., so I think live for “Karate” is still the best, but the MV is absolutely required viewing!
I love seeing new BABYMETAL fans! My one and only wish for the last 5 years (found BABYMETAL 2015, "Gimme Chocolate" had about 90,000 views) is to hear this music on American radio! The radio stations in my area SUCK! Once BABYMETAL gets air play in America there will be a evolution for metal music as a whole!
Metal and rock music seem to be on a sharp decline over the past decade in the U.S., which sucks. Just over ten years ago, we had four rock stations in the Boston area. Today, we have one I think (maybe two of the Boston one hasn’t switched to being a Christian station yet...no, I’m not kidding) based out of New Hampshire. It’s been a real rough go of it lately.
I had kind of the same experience, where I discovered the different aspects of the band over several songs before I had a full picture. You're missing a couple of things, still, believe it or not. You've heard two songs, but neither was actually a fully live performance (Gimme Chocolate was a music video combining concert footage with studio audio), so I recommend that you check out a live performance next. "Headbanger" from the "Legend of 1997" concert would be the ideal choice, I think. You can really see the crowd engagement in that one, and their relationship with the crowd is an aspect you haven't really seen yet, and you also get to hear their actual live band, who are a cut above the studio musicians. Also, reactions to that performance never seem to get blocked, so that's a bonus.
Excellent reaction, Chels! (Mat will catch up soon 😁). Seriously, Chels gets it, "BABYMETAL just makes me so happy". This fits a core BABYMETAL philosophy: "Don't think. FEEL." Chels will soon absorbed into "THE ONE" (#notacult), don't make her go alone Mat! Arigatou! 🦊🤘

That didn't stop them from letting Crunchyroll use PaPaYa in a promo for anime. And it was smart. There were a whole lot of people in the comments asking, 'Who is that band?'.
I know. And I also like that Crunchyroll promo. KOBAMETAL’s intension is they won’t make theme songs for a specific anime series that has no relation to the concept of BABYMETAL. The words “BABYMETAL itself is a fantasy” means something like this. If they sing anime theme songs, that is to say, Black Widow or Wonder Woman sings a theme song for Naruto, that is too strange in the context of each fantasy.

Su, the lead singer, has amazing solo songs (gives the 2 girls a chance to rest during their 1.5+ hour concerts). Then the two girls, Moa and Yui, have 4 songs without Su, and they made those songs the heaviest songs of them all! 🦊🤘
If you've already fallen in the fox hole then it's going to be a long way down. They've got three albums full of excellent tracks and many different excellent live videos to react to. Great reaction. Suzuka's voice grows on almost everyone over time because she has a unique power and tone that fits really well with the music in my opinion, especially for her age (she's born Dec 1997). She's 16 in both performances I linked below and 18 when the Karate MV was released (Moa & Yui, the other two are born Jul and Jun 1999, so they were 16 in Karate). You said you love the band, but you didn't even listen to them yet. The official band, Kami Band (Kami means god), only plays live shows, they're some of the best musicians in Japan. Now you've done one of the two music videos that are worth watching from a music perspective (in my opinion of course), the other being Megitsune. Almost all of their songs are written to be played live and live is definitely where they most shine. A lot of Moa & Yui's chants/screams/backup vocals and choreographies are there to get the crowd involved or convey what the song is about, so that's another thing that's made for a live show. I can only agree with the other comments that Headbanger from Legend 1997 in 2013 should be your next one. Another great one that is highly "underreacted to" in my opinion is Ijime Dame Zettai from Sonisphere festival UK in 2014 ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html . This was their first performance in front of a bigger crowd outside of Japan.

Great reaction! You have gotten excellent info. from so many people, so I’ll make this brief. If you saw at the end of the song, they do a hand gesture that looks like they’re messing up the metal horns. They’re not. This is their symbol, a play on the horns that they call a fox. There’s a story saying when they were learning about the horns, they either made a mistake and commented on it, or just made the comment that it looked kind of like a fox. A light went off for their producer, Koba, as we call him. They created this whole lore of the girls and the band being chosen by the fox god (Inari Kami in Japanese) to bring metal back to Japan, which had been very underground at that point. It has evolved to spreading metal across the galaxy now. You will see them do that gesture constantly in videos, interviews, on merch., etc. This also leads to calling it the “fox hole” instead of the typical “rabbit hole” of falling into something. This video is probably their best with a couple others, like “Megitsune”, being VERY close in the running. This is just a lovely piece of art where you get the music, the vocals, the choreography, and the symbolism very neatly rolled up and shown. I’m looking forward to more reactions to them. You’ve had a ton thrown your way, so I won’t give more, but I know you’ll love them all!

I feel like giving a dislike just for the anime comments. Haha. It's like reactors are required to say "that sounds like anime!". Apparently everything sounds like anime. I've recently seen someone comparing a Metallica song to anime. 🤣 Im just kidding about the dislike. I'm glad to see you liking the vocals. Sometimes that takes a while for people to realize how good the singing is.
It's a fair point. Babymetal is, in a sense, Karen Girls II. And that was actually anime music. I put Babymetal into Pandora because i like putting weird music there to see what comes out. It was a lot of anime music. LiSA who does seemingly the opening to every other anime and soundtracks from anime. Nothing that i liked but it was similar.
@Drams O'Scotch - Japanese vocal melodies are so strong. it's overpowering if you're not used to it. It's like the anime song that you hate the first 10 times you hear it but then you start to really llike it.
I've been watching anime since before i was born, and consider myself an Otaku, i am a westerner but I've never thought that BABYMETAL ever sounded like anime. I think it is the whole western civ proceeds Japan and their language mostly in music. By the way you gave me a first real laugh on this week few minutes ago when I watched you Gimme Chocolate reaction, thank you for that.
Yes! I've been waiting for more Babymetal, they are not a band to sleep on.
Happy we could deliver!! 🦊🤘
I feel the same way. They just make me so happy!!
As soon as you said Anime opening I thought of like Avatar like Toph or someone just ripping through people lol
Damn the tears is falling down when i hear this song. 😍 I hope you gonna do a reaction of Sabaton's newest song called: The First Soldier.
You should hear No Rain No Rainbow Live in Tokyo. Su has a great voice.
Awesome reaction. If you want to see more of their talents, check out Megisune or Distortion

It's Blasphemy to pause a Su high note 🔥😉
@@martinmetal7481 "oh wow listen to that high note! Better pause now!" 😅
But we go back when we pause! 😊
Nothing like a bunch of Sith Inquisitors rockin out LOL :)
yeah .... with Babymetal it's better you soak in and feel it rather think about it , that way the magic feels more .... satisfying.
days, weeks, years, forever 🙂
Su and Moa also play guitar, which I hope we see more of as the band evolves.
FYI, your mic volume is a little low.
ayyy babymetal rules! imo I their live stuff is better, so I would recommend rondo of nightmare at budokan next : >
Kami Band is friggin insane
I feel like giving a dislike just for the anime comments. Haha. It's like reactors are required to say "that sounds like anime!". Apparently everything sounds like anime. I've recently seen someone comparing a Metallica song to anime. 🤣
Im just kidding about the dislike.
That said, i am digging you guys reaction and look forward to your trip down The Foxhole. 🤘🤘🤘
All hail The Fox God
