  • This video originally started out as just clips of 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' and 5029 'Nunney Castle' in action this year. However, in late November, following ongoing firebox and boiler stay issues, Nunney Castle was unfortunately withdrawn from service; the morning before what was planned to be her final mainline run, 'The Marches Castle'. It is unsure whether she will return any time soon, or even at all. So instead of the two Castles, this video is dedicated to Nunney herself, and to all the people who kept her going for everyone to enjoy.
Included in this video are various shots from 2014 and 2013 of Nunney at work on both the mainline, and on heritage lines.
    These are as follows:
    5th October 2013
    The West Somerset Railway
    'Cambrian Railways' Gala
    Location: Kentsford
    27th April 2014

    Falmouth - Bristol
    Double headed with 34046 'Braunton'

    The Anniversary Limited
    Westbury - Plymouth - Bristol

    16th September 2014
    The Cathedrals Express
    Westbury - Kingswear - Westbury
    Location: Sprey Point
Various dates in 2013 and 2014
    The Torbay Express
    Bristol - Kingswear - Bristol
Locations: Yatton, Whiteball, Teignmouth, Kingswear, Greenway Tunnel, Torre, Pugham Farm x2 and Yatton
    25th October 2014

    We'll miss you, Nunney.

Despite my love for both the LMS and the LNER, there's just something amazing about a Great Western single-chimney Castle going flat-out like a lizard drinking. Cheers from an enthusiast from America, mate!

Brings tears to an old man,s eyes remembering those halcyon days' of 1947 when we used to travel from Torquay to Paddington at a cost of 48/- return. That's £2.48p in today's money.

Great compilation. I would have thought with the issues with her boiler and her only being certified for another year it would make sense to overhaul her now rather than possibly repair her and only get another couple of months running before her boiler ticket expires.

pullman coaches 50 to 60 years old, your really privileged to see them, as their really rare, their the brown and cream coloured coaches, the windows are a different shape to, originally american, but ours were made here

I think the coaches were made at Metro Cammell, Saltley Birmingham. I served an engineering apprenticeship there from 1956 to 1961. They also built the Pullman Blue train and coaches for the Orient Express.

Excellent video! Thanks for sharing. Why would Nunny not be rebuilt? Isn't she one of Jeremy's many locos from his mainline collection still? He and his predecessor have kept her running for years. Or is it because there are "other" castles on the mainline and two long missed about about to return to steam?

these green and pleasant lands set in a shiny sea, when we had a thriving industry and people had JOBS, ahh yes i remember it well, we need those times back, our kids are getting to be, really pessimistic, bloody bureaucrats, lining their pockets and screwing it all up, and we had, real food and clean water to

again boiler and firebox issues are all down to bad firing too much coal in the door hole means you cannot throw it to the front under the brick arch were it will be needed bad firing or over firing you only end up with the boiler end plate distortion which then pulls on the firebox stays
so correct firing must be maintained

well I going say there is still bad firing going on you need air under the fire for it to burn and too much coal does not help mathodicl firing is better
