  • So today I find myself getting up at 4am to head up to Tyseley Locomotive works to see 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe departing up the infamously steep southern exit of the complex. Stopping half way up the incline for a signal check allowed me to catch a standing start with spectacular results! As surefooted as always the incline caused no issues at all.
Next was a quick leapfrog to Hatton Bank to see the Earl hurtling Southwards towards Warwick.
My next location was Heyford Station set right alongside the idyllic Oxford Canal. And the Earl promptly rushes through at quite some pace on its way to its watering stop near Oxford.
Next up is Culham station followed by a short jump to a Bridge overlooking Cholsey station.
For the last shot of the outbound leg I revisited a favourite location of mine overlooking Crofton Beam Engines.
For the Return leg I came across a great location near Shrivenham on the Great Western mainline, more or less uninterrupted viewing of the line side.
For my final shot of the day I chose Appleford, being reasonably close to a signal check near Didcot, it would still be powering away towards Oxford.
My intention was to go to Hatton Bank for a nighttime shot of 5043 powering up the bank. But this wasn't to be.
My car decided to breakdown in spectacular fashion and I was taken back to Surrey on the back of a Lorry.
Other than that a fantastic days filming.
    Hope you enjoyed it.

That was the absolute best lift off on a grade by a British steam driver I have ever seen. Not a hint of a slip. Bloody brilliant.

Yes indeed. The Castles are well renown for their sure footedness. Amazing machines and an amazing bark to boot!

A masterclass in starting such a load on a gradient, obviously using a superb sure footed loco.

There is something magical about steam trains. I was in Reading station back in 2013 and a steam train came chuffing through and everyone just stopped and watched it

The re-start on the hill was a masterful piece of driving. Fantastic hill start. Didn't once "pick-up her feet" (wheel slipping). Western engines were very "sure-footed".

Excellent video - seeing a Castle set loose like this brings back great memories - I remember seeing 5043 in the late 50s on "The Cornishman" near Cheltenham - and she is still going strong - wonderful !

Wow. What a superb performance. One could easily have thought this was taken in its heyday. The speeds she was achieving is something to behold. Well done to all. Thanks for recording and posting

Great Filming and some wonderful shots of her flat out. Each time it came by I noticed the fireman shovelling away!!! I bet she had to have a lie down in a dark shed after that day!!

This was brilliant! Seeing the engine run out of steam on that tough grade, then build up pressure and take it, while barking like a cannon, was fantastic. I've never seen anything like it. And I always enjoy seeing them run at speed. Great video.

Thankyou my friend, your comments are much appreciated.
However the earl was stopping on the gradient due to a red signal. I cut the commuter train passing from the final edit because it took ages and we're all here for the steam!

As a lad i remember the Kings,Castles, and Hall classes at Paddington stn, best locos ever, in the late 80s early 90s i worked with an ex GWR fireman he said what a hard job, and how he hated working with some drivers as the rinsed through the coal. Great video thanks for posting.

Many thanks for sharing very much appreciated. 5043 is a favourite of mine because she seems to perform so well, the guys at Tyseley seem to have done a very good job . The West Somerset Railway Association's 7821 is at Tyseley at the moment having work done, let's hope she turns out as good.

Fantastic photography many thanks for posting . Very impressive start when the engine lifted the train with very little fuss even though it was on a gradient . I wonder if a Pacific could have done it without slipping ?

This may sound strange coming from a Scot, but I love this loco which always turns in great performances and looks superb. I've seen and filmed her on several occasions and I'm so impressed by her. That's a def like from me and will sub to your channel. Thanks for a very enjoyable video. Ken

Great visuals, but the audio ruined by wind roar. A great shame, it could so easily have been prevented with a penny-worth of cotton wool over the microphones. aperture(s).

Thankyou for your comment. Unfortunately the wind was so strong that day that my penny-worth of cotton wool over the mic just wasn't enough to cut it. Not to worry, I now have a quids worth of cotton taking its place ;)
