In spanish the Fabled archetype is called "Fabuloso" which is technically not incorrect, but that word is always used to say "Fabulous", so you have cards called like "The Fabulous Cerburrel". Thats the whole reason I started using the archetype back in the day, which became my favorite ever. On the games I always call my Fabled Decks "¡Soy Fabuloso!", that is "I'm Fabulous!"
Well, fable means fábula, as in a short story that teaches a lesson (red riding hood for example). So I'd argue that the Fabled monsters should be named something like Cerburrel de Fábula, Kushano de Fábula, Ragin de Fábula, etc. Fabuloso still sounds good tho
In Italian, the normal Fabled are "Il Favoloso" (e.g. Fabled Raven is "Il Favoloso Corvo). Issue: "The Fabled" sub-archetype. They decided to add a random(?) "F." to the names, e.g. The Fabled Cerburrel becomes "Il Favoloso F. Cerburrel"
Whoever translated Clockwork Night into German apparently couldn’t tell the difference between Night and Knight, so the card is now called “Uhrwerk-Ritter” (Night - Nacht, Knight - Ritter)
Dude same with DIFO filler card "Light Law Medium" which is quite obviously supposed to be a sort of psychic, a medium, but has been translated as "Lightgesetz Mittel" translating medium as in "a medium of communication or transportation" or sth along those lines. DESPITE "MEDIUM" ALSO BEING THE GERMAN WORD FOR THIS KIND OF PSYCHIC lol
I had too look this card up, because I have never seen it, but I feel like if it was actually the psychic kind of medium, they would make it a psychic monster instead of fairy. Medium could refer to its size, in which case "Mittel" would be a fine translation
Fun fact about that translation. When the card was used in the Anime, it was originally mistranslated as "Clockwork Knight", so them sticking with that translation could be seen less as a mistranslation per sé but just faithfulness to the original anime's translation.
@@jem5299 Actually I am pretty sure it is supposed to be a psychic medium still. The card originally only existed in a really old yugioh video game that came out in 2000 and psychic types did not exist back then. I assume they kept it as a fairy to stay true to the original.
Slightly related to the brazilian translation of Red Eyes Black Chick, but for Magic The Gathering instead: One of Nicol Bolas' brothers is named Piru, right? In portuguese, "Bolas" means "'balls" and "Piru" is slang for "cock". So in MTG, we have the Cock and Balls brothers.
Because the German word for "Nurse" in "Nurse Dragonmaid" is "Krankenschwester", and the translation team didn't know it stood for nursery, we have "Drachenmädchen Rentnerwachskeks" as "Dragonmaid Ernus", to keep all the letters. But thats just the 3 words "pensioner", "growth" and "cookie" back to back. Its so weird to say. I guess they couldn't be bothered to find anything else pronounceable? I guess the consonant to vowel ratio makes it rather hard to find anything with explicitly no meaning.
be happy that dragonmaids didn't get the french translation team experience. in france, they are MERMAIDS whose dragon form names are nonsensical because they DIDNT TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH
The fucked up German Dragonmaid is even funnier when you realize that in Japanese... the dragonmaids' dragon forms all have German names lol. They're each named after their element, so Dragonmaid Ernus in Japanese is "Dragonmaid Erde" instead.
Honestly, even then it isn't funny. It's just a combination of 2 words, the archtype and it being a tuner. Just... normal. Except for english speaking people who can'*t just combine words.
@@GreyVictory1510 Dude, what are you talking about? We have Interplanetarypurplythorny Dragon, and that shit is funny af. So yeah, combining words instead of separating them can be pretty funny.

4:30 small correction the H in portuguese isnt pronnounced as it is in spanish, and due to some gramatical differences the "LH" is pronnounced together as "lee" so the actual pronounciation of the card would be closer to "Pin-to ne-gro de o-lee-os ver-me-lee-oos
One of my favourite cards, Anteater Eating Ant, got mistranslated in German and is just called "Anteating Anteater" for us, which... Yeah, that's just a regular Anteater.
"Testudo erat Numen" and "Numen erat Testudo" have the same name in English, French, Italian and Spanish. German decided to translate the Latin into "Die Schildkröte war göttlich"/"Göttlich war die Schildkröte" ("The turtle was divine"/"Divine was the turtle") Everyone else has to learn Latin to understand the lore of this turtle, but the german translation team found it very important to give it to us straight that this turtle used to be divine. also, "Reverse Buster", random packfiller that busts reverse (=face-down) monsters, was translated into german with "buster" not as in "destroyer" but as in "what an old person calls a young troublemaker" to "Umkehrbursche" ("reverse lad") Through a couple layers of abstraction he's basically gone from "face-down destroyer" to "buddy who turns things around"
Fun fact about MtG translation in that case: There exists a card named Wild Nacatl, which was just a bulk common from a set 15 years ago. But in the States the german version somehow rose to nearly 10 bucks because it was the Wilder Nacatl, which made it somehow better.
You know, the worst part of all of this is that "Hochgeschwindigkeitsroid Gummiband-Schütze" is a LITERAL TRANSLATION of the english name of the card. "Hoch" means high. Roid stays the same. "Gummi" means rubber, so "Gummiband" is Rubber Band "Schütze" means shooter. However, "Geschwindigkeit" Is the MOST COMMON TRANSLATION for "SPEED" and solely responsible for turning this into word salad.
I have to spit out a bunch of Italian translation issues here right now. Excluding stuff already mentioned by other commenters: -The original translation of V-Jet Tiger's flavor text that interpreted the reference to dogfighting as in actual dogs fighting -Naturia Eggplant that interpreted the "Eggplant" part as an egg that is also a plant -Dragonmaid Sheou keeping the English name while all the other ones had their anagram names properly redone (I think it's because the word they chose to translate House Dragonmaid could potentially include the N-word when you shuffle the letters around) -In fact, Dragonmaids were all mistranslated as Dragondamsels ("Dragonzella") -Miracle Kids being translated as "Miraculous boy" despite not only the English name was plural but Hero Kid was made into a girl -And also all those card names that in Italy somehow dodged censorship, such as Des Kangaroo and Barrel Dragon being reverted to their original Japanese names of Death Kangaroo and Revolver Dragon or TY-PHON being called a "Super Starmurderer" -Also, remember Ill Blud? Well, for some reason they decided to call him Galeogrugno, which basically means "Pug-faced convict".
Another very old mistake: Sorcerer of the doomed was initially called just "Stregone Dei", essentially taking out the last word for whatever reason. In the same vein, The Stern Mystic isn't stern anymore. As for Dragonmaid, I assume it's moreso the classic maid/maiden mixup
German card translations are the best! Fun fact: In Germany we have multiple schools named "Albert Schweizer Schule" or "Ass" for short, we had a big sign on the school parking lot saying "ASS"! Exchange students and visitors always smiled or cracked up laughing when they saw our "ASS" Hoodies. Now let's enjoy Mbt's Perfektes Ass!
Junk Synchron as the first ever Synchron got a small translation mistake in German. All other Synchron monster are just named Synchron. Synchronisierer is just Synchronizer and because it still fits the archtype with this wording, it was never changed
I know it's in reference to the anime, but in *Poland* the first run of the anime was done by one of the cheaper networks and I swear they got like the janitor or something to translate it. The two most memorable names were when Mokuba summoned Man-Eating Plant they translated it as "A man eating a plant" and later Black Luster Soldier got translated as "Soldier of Black Lust". Those became a local meme for as long as I played the game.
In Brazil we have a meme with Heatleo or as it is called in the Brazilian translation,Salmangrande Leardor. A guy was making a 3x structure video when the structure came out and he accidentaly said he's running 3 Leardar and 3 Leardor and he showed 6 copies of Heatleo(the structure had multiple copies of it). Sometimes I see people refering to Heatleo as "Leardar e Leardor" as a reference to this
I often talk about "Whitebeard, the Plunder Patroll Helm" and how its french translator misunderstood the "Helm" part as coming from "helmet" instead of "helmsman". Leading to the dude being Casque de la Patroll du Pillage instead of Timonier de la Patroll du Pillage. There are countless examples like this one.

The cool thing with words in german is, you can string alot of independent words together and they still build a "legit" word. Like: "Schiffsfahrtskapitänsmütze" which directly tranlates to:" Ship, drive, captain, hat" but it really means: " Captains hat " XD
My favorite are the Koaki Meiru. In case you don't know, Koaki Meiru doesn't mean anything in Japanese. Their name in Japanese os Core Chimera. But the Japanese have a hard time with pronunciation of English words, so they spell it as koa kimeiru.
I like how in gendered languages, Hiita changes sexes between versions. iirc regular Hiita is male, then the Familiar Posessed is female, link is male.
The right wing media might have told you about trans people who regret transitioning, but what about the trans people that transition, regret it and de-transition, regret that as well and then transition back? Ever thought about them?
While we can (and should) laught at bad translations, we need to keep in mind that in many cases, especially before the brand was established, translators would only be given the text itself with little to no context, and strict daily quotas to meet. This could explain mistranslations such as "light" becoming "not heavy", and "donkey" being misread as "monkey". Italy seems especially prone to this, as the demand for translation is very high and English literacy is relatively low.
In French, Jack Jaguar cracks me up, because they just translated the name "Jack" to "Jacques", which, while the same name, does not have the same vibe to it. Also, love Ojama Black in Spanish, for some reason.
As an Italian “Frienddonkey” always messed up so hard with my head. I thought that maybe there was an Easter egg or smth similar for years. Than I realised that Italian translators probably did what Italian translators usually do and that’s using Google translator for everything… now would you look at what happens if you missclick a “d” for a “m”? Yeah, exactly…
One of the best misstranslation in italian is naturia eggplant, for a reason that I will never understand, they translated it with “uovopianta” instead of “melanza” (wich is the right translation of eggplant). They translated it LITERALLY by dividing the 2 words, so egg (uovo) and plant (pianta). I REALLY HOPE KONAMI FIRED THIS TRANSLATOR

There's an exception to the italian Black Luster Soldier versions. Don't know if it's still like that, but at some point Envoy of the Beginning was properly translated, becoming "Soldato dell'Oscuro Desiderio - Emissario dell'Inizio".
The official Italian name errata list states that the next reprint will change it to say "Glorioso Soldato Nero" as all the other cards. But there has been no reprint with the fixed name yet. Not even in the 25th Anniversary IOC reprint they fixed the name.
Man the best german mistranslation has to be "Ameisenfressender Ameisenbär" for "Anteatereatingant". The literal translation is "Ant eating anteater". Which is definetely wrong because there is no anteater on the card, it is one giant ant.
In the german dub of the anime, they refer to the BEWD as, essentially, "The White Dragon With the Stone-cold Stare". Which is very cool, but did not make it to the actual card game... which is probably for the best, since that would be one hell of a Frog-the-Jam situation with all the support that Blue-Eyes has gotten over the years. 😅
Abyssactor Comic Relief was poorly translate in French. They did not refered to the comedy archetype but translated the individual words literally: the abyssactor is comically relieved
Annual reminder that Trial of Nightmare was originally printed as Trial of Hell. It was changed immediately after the 1st edition version so no unlimited edition copies exist.
What really hammers it home is that he "mispronounces" (as in, different from how we would, not wrong per se) Rotschild almost the same way he mangles the card names. That man's a pureblood american, through and through.

German localization team took kind of an L on that one, shoulda gone with Ameisenbärfresserameise
Cretin really doesn't translate to idiot, However because it's originally an insult on someone's intelligence, It is sometimes translated that way, despite not matching the vibe at all. Cretin in modern English is more associated with physical and social aspects of the condition it is named after, However that doesn't translate well into other languages where these associations are often different.
What bothers me most about "Schattenpuppe" (and most other versions of "Shaddoll" in other languages) is that it's just a direct translation of "Shadow Doll/Puppet", and loses the wordplay between "El Shaddoll" and "El Shaddai", which is one of the Hebrew titles for God.
I have an unfamiliar one in Korean. You know the DM era that the vanillas were localized as whatever the fk TLs came up with? Like, 'バーサーカー(Berserker)' goes 'Mystic Clown' in TCG? Well the Korean TLs, don't ask me the reason, went '마력의 광대(Clown of Mana)' for that one. That's as far as OK. But when the GX era hit and バーサーカークラッシュ(Berserker Crush) released for Winged Kuriboh, the korean TLs for whatever reason got afraid 'バーサーカー' would be the name for the next archetype. So, they brought DM era localization '마력의 광대' for that keyword and now, 'Berserker Crush' in Korea is, still to this day, '마력의 광대 크러시(Clown of Mana Crush)'. HONK

Same thing in italian where it's called "Favoloso".
"OH BITCH , I'M FABULOUS!"
And it'll clean your house!

@@_grofAI'd argue it's worse. I think they went for Medium as in _size._ Small, Medium, Large. Klein, Mittel, Groß.
Nada me convence que isso não foi de propósito, tem algum BR na Wizards fazendo de sacanagem com certeza
Me lembra o mestre Sifo Dias do Star Wars
There's not a single thing you can do to convince me this wasn't done on purpose after a portuguese intern pointed out to him that Bolas means Balls
@@bleakslugI'm sorry what
And they say germans have no humor
The fucked up German Dragonmaid is even funnier when you realize that in Japanese... the dragonmaids' dragon forms all have German names lol.
They're each named after their element, so Dragonmaid Ernus in Japanese is "Dragonmaid Erde" instead.
Krakenschwester is so cool wtf
As a german, you never really find Gerümpelsynchronisierer funny until somebody points out how funny it is.
Honestly, even then it isn't funny. It's just a combination of 2 words, the archtype and it being a tuner. Just... normal. Except for english speaking people who can'*t just combine words.

I can't believe Dimension Rizz didn't make it into the video
Which card?
One of my favourite cards, Anteater Eating Ant, got mistranslated in German and is just called "Anteating Anteater" for us, which... Yeah, that's just a regular Anteater.
It wasn't translated into Italian, so it took me years to understand what the name was
"Testudo erat Numen" and "Numen erat Testudo" have the same name in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

But in the States the german version somehow rose to nearly 10 bucks because it was the Wilder Nacatl, which made it somehow better.
there's gotta be a 2nd part of this thread topic, I've never seen Joseph laugh this much 😂
You know, the worst part of all of this is that "Hochgeschwindigkeitsroid Gummiband-Schütze" is a LITERAL TRANSLATION of the english name of the card.
"Hoch" means high.
Roid stays the same.
"Gummi" means rubber, so "Gummiband" is Rubber Band
"Schütze" means shooter.
However, "Geschwindigkeit" Is the MOST COMMON TRANSLATION for "SPEED" and solely responsible for turning this into word salad.
Ohhh , that makes much more sense now. Yeah , now I understand why it's a clusterfuck
I sure love my Hochgeschwindigkeitsroids.
So, highspeedroid rubberband-shooter? That's quite a name.
@TaIathar that's the same as the English name
They just could've used Raschheit or Renner,
Tho those don't have the word wind in them.
I have to spit out a bunch of Italian translation issues here right now. Excluding stuff already mentioned by other commenters:
-The original translation of V-Jet Tiger's flavor text that interpreted the reference to dogfighting as in actual dogs fighting
-Naturia Eggplant that interpreted the "Eggplant" part as an egg that is also a plant
-Dragonmaid Sheou keeping the English name while all the other ones had their anagram names properly redone (I think it's because the word they chose to translate House Dragonmaid could potentially include the N-word when you shuffle the letters around)
-In fact, Dragonmaids were all mistranslated as Dragondamsels ("Dragonzella")
-Miracle Kids being translated as "Miraculous boy" despite not only the English name was plural but Hero Kid was made into a girl
-And also all those card names that in Italy somehow dodged censorship, such as Des Kangaroo and Barrel Dragon being reverted to their original Japanese names of Death Kangaroo and Revolver Dragon or TY-PHON being called a "Super Starmurderer"
-Also, remember Ill Blud? Well, for some reason they decided to call him Galeogrugno, which basically means "Pug-faced convict".
Blud thinks he's a convict
Italian here: basically all cards that include the word "slayer" are translated as "assassin/murderer", which is super cool
In portuguese we also have dragonzelas lol
this one is for my brazilian brothers: abyss splash in spanish is Abisalpicadura

Like:
"Schiffsfahrtskapitänsmütze" which directly tranlates to:" Ship, drive, captain, hat" but it really means: " Captains hat " XD
My favorite are the Koaki Meiru. In case you don't know, Koaki Meiru doesn't mean anything in Japanese. Their name in Japanese os Core Chimera. But the Japanese have a hard time with pronunciation of English words, so they spell it as koa kimeiru.

One of the best misstranslation in italian is naturia eggplant, for a reason that I will never understand, they translated it with “uovopianta” instead of “melanza” (wich is the right translation of eggplant).

Cretin really doesn't translate to idiot,
