  • How to uppercut in a real street fight to knock someone out with one punch. The uppercut is a great knockout punch but there's a problem in a real fight. This self defense technique is the solution!

    I have read that the upper palm strike was the technique that American soldiers used against the Japanese in WWII in hand-to-hand combat. The enemy soldier never saw it coming as it was below his sight line and it put him down immediately.
    While taking martial arts classes (Jujitsu) several years ago, I mentioned this to our Sensei and he insisted using the fist for the upper cut instead. Your technique makes more sense.

    When I did H2H (Hand to Hand Fighting) training in the military, we were taught that a fist/punch was the equivalent to the air forces fire n forget. Once you let it loose its no other purpose or control options.
    It is always better to use open hand or semi-open-hand thrusts, pushes, strikes, grabs, chops, and blocks, they are like the Swiss army knife of hand to hand fighting.
    They adapt to other roles quickly if they failed in their intended role as described in the video.
    But also not being a fist means that if attacked by your opponent or an attempt to grapple you, you open hand is more capable to respond much faster to countering a grapple.
    If you fall your hand is open, I know that opening times of the hand are fast but if distracted by fighting it can be overlooked to open your hand when falling. This can lead to the incapacity of that hand in the fight.
    I was a boxer for my regiment and found it hard to NOT make fists when fighting. I had to focus really hard not to do it.
    Now I don't make fists at all.
    That serves two purposes, one its less threatening and least likely to 'trigger' an opponent into a fight, two you always look unprepared and this lessens the opponent level of ferocity against you,.... you don't run 90 miles if you only need 5 miles. As humans we always do what we can to conserve energy and fighting less is no exception.

    Agreed on the nonsense, and you're right about the uppercut being a wonderful strike. Add to that boxing or kickboxing style footwork and combinations and you have a winner. Even if you miss your uppercut you can always have a cross or hook ready afterwards depending on whether it's a front or rear hand uppercut, respectively. It tends to pop the head out of their guard, leaving it open for the follow-up.

    These days every smuck will teach boxing.. leave that to boxers please. Just want to say that you never ever bend your wrist at punching (or your wrist is history soon) and uppercut is never ever 1st punch you throw and not from that distance. Uppercut is inner fight punch (close to body). To land it you have to step in or let oponent come to distance to conter his atack.

      Well i was told: To hurt somebody is easy ;) Try to help him 1st.. Ok now to boxing.. Learned in 1st place not to hurt yourself, 2nd to protect youself and don't let anybody hurt you. Boxing is not just fighting. It is the way of life you chose. Anybody can throw a punch and if he's lucky he hit the target, but to fight by smart boxing is another story. I respect everybody who train boxing or what ever kind of sport they do. Just can't get over that that those who have no clue, try to get important, teach others wrong or take advantage of somebody. To many of those "wannabes" have influence on kids.

    No offense and thank you for the tips. One thing I would like to point out in addition to your video. A lot of a punch's power is determined by the use of properly using your legs. If you know how to throw a punch then I'm sure you'll agree that approximately 65% of your power is generated from the proper bending of your legs in coordination with your punch.
    ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF AN UPPERCUT.

    Wow! people stop hating... This guy knows what he is talking about. he can't go over every little detail in a single video. that would be a waist of time. the palmed upper cut absolutely works. Any regular "street fighter" throws wild punches, half the time with his eyes closed! Real easy to duck under and all in one motion throw your whole body into it. I have used this once and it worked perfect the first time. His other 2 buddies didn't want any part of it. nice job! keep the videos coming!

    If you try to hit your enemy with the palm in the chin as you say, wouldn't it be more difficult than with the fist? What I mean is that you could tangle your fingers in the process and actually make things worse. As you said, in a street fight people move around a lot. Thanks

    Nice theory..But its still a theory. To use this in a fight you have to get in much closer than an uppercut. An uppercut also has more power or speed behind it as well as impact. Palm heel is OK at the beginning of a fight but once the blows are reigning down yr best bet is harder strikes, punches, kicks, elbows, knees and head butts. Palm heels become palm pushes when the fight is already on. Now eye gouges and throat strikes are something else altogether

    Once while I was in High School, this big, tall bully was bouncing me against a brick wall. He was so big that he could lift me right up off of the walkway with his elbow (he was turned to the side) and then the back of my head would hit the wall, harder and harder each time, as my neck and shoulders weakened. Everything was getting cloudy and black, then my reflexes took over. I was able to time when I would come down off of the wall so that just as my toes would touch the ground, I shot out my right hand and hit him in the neck with the "Ku Hou" (Tiger's mouth) area at the base of my thumb. I was careful not to hit his windpipe with the knuckle at the base of my forefinger (still back in the days when I didn't want to hurt anybody.) The bully literally flew back 3-4 feet and landed on the grass. He couldn't see it coming! Since then (1967) I've learned a lot more about self defense, and have become somewhat less tolerant of violent criminals. I've had more "encounters" since then of course.

    @lastwithpaganblood87 - Thanks! Yeah, most people instinctively punch with a closed fist but even in training against a heavy bag, I've folded my wrist and injured my hand. It's even harder in a real street fight because the person is moving and this makes for an unstable striking surface.
    Palm heel strikes are the way to go!

    One simple answer to the lowered guard when uppercutting, use your elbow in a vertical strike. That way you can keep your striking hand up whilst utilising the turning moment of the elbow to create a huge impact force. Plus the elbow is a large bone, so its much less likely to break than fingers or even your palm.

    Very good advice. I was taught the less joints between you and your target = more power inflicted. Your knuckles absorb some of the force of a blow with a closed fist. Elbows and knees are the strongest force, palm and heel are close behind. I was taught to rarely if ever use a closed fist as too much of my focused power will be lost in the extra joints between me and the target. Good info here, just not fully explained. I dunno if this guy has any martial arts training or not but his method is smart.

  • @matthias66
    @matthias66 10 років тому +2

    A palm heel strike is not a punch, it is an open handed strike. A punch is a close fisted strike.
    I would also mention that uppercuts are only supposed to be thrown at very close range, like in inside fighting in boxing, where mostly hooks, uppercuts, and straight rights or overhand rights are thrown.
    This isn't Mortal Kombat, you can expect to throw a uppercut from an intermediate distance and expect it to connect. It isn't practical.
    There isn't "one" best punch to knock someone out. In my opinion, there are 3 that are practical- the Straight Right (Straight Left for Southpaw), Left Hook to the Head (Right Hook for Southpaw), or Overhand Right (Overhand Left for Southpaw).
    Straight Right aka Cross, if it connects on the chin, there is a good chance you'll knock someone out. Even if it hits the face, if it is hard enough, it will stun someone.
    Left Hook is a little harder to land if you aren't experienced in boxing, but it hits one of two areas- the chin or the temple of the head. Either one, if hard enough, will be a K.O.
    Overhand Right is an advanced boxing punch that combines the motions of a Hook and a Straight Right. It is not a wild haymaker, like you see in street fights, but a precisely aimed punched, aimed for the face or chin. If it lands on the chin hard enough, it will knock you out.

      Richard Snow Uhhh.. Actually I am a BB in jujitsu, smart guy, and have been teaching martial arts and street self-defense to adults and children for many years. The principles and technique demonstrated in this video are garbage, as with every other video of theirs. It's crap. It's a scam. Check out their website for all you need to know. This kind of quasi-martial arts bs is laughable at best, and dangerous at worst. Giving a false sense of security to the poor impressionable suckers that are drawn into it, and potentially getting them hurt or killed. It's a travesty and it's sad.
      As for you, There's an old saying I like that fits here.. "Better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you're an idiot, than to open it and remove all doubt."

      Hardcaliber19 "Better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you're an idiot, than to open it and remove all doubt."
      I think that applies to d-bags criticizing form on a video that's exemplifying what can *go wrong* in a street fight(ie not having perfect form with every single punch that's thrown).
      Or giving a list of credentials to prove yourself... despite the fact that the very person you're criticizing has that same list(and then some)

    • @hardcaliber19
      @hardcaliber19 10 років тому +2

      Richard Snow Nice try. So you're saying that their crappy form is intentional? Please don't make me laugh. All of their videos are like this. No form, half-assed technique, and incomplete concepts from a self-defense perspective. It's just regurgitated crap from any RBSD book out there, and it's not even described or performed well. These guys are frauds, and I pity you if you actually swallow what these clowns are selling.
      Or is he your brother or something? That would explain alot.
      You sir clearly have no idea what you are talking about, save what you imagine in your ignorant little mind. So thanks for the tips, but piss off.

    the real secert to throwing a clean uppercut is to drop low follow your opponents sternum up with your pinky finger thumb towards you, Do NOT bend pivot or anything else weird your wrist (no limp-wristed pansy strikes) rise up while delivering the jaw breaking knock out blow. Speed is the key over power, if you don't achieve the effect you were looking for strike again. Always follow through, I personally gauge my strikes to completely go through my opponent's.

    I have one thing to say, true story: I used to own two OXEN that weighed over a ton each. One tended to be a little "playful." One day he play-butted me under the chin in the standard uppercut manner. He did it so hard that I was actually lifted off my feet a bit and I landed on my back. I needed stitches under my chin. I was NOT KNOCKED OUT (but I was PISSED!).

    Yes, and when you slam the heel of your hand upwards against someones jaw with a lot of force, there's a very good chance that you'll snap the neck. Likewise slamming under the nose, the nose will shatter, the cartliage will compress at a heck of a speed, and the breathing will be very much impaired. Best to do what sensible people suggest, escape if possible. Don't forget, your responsible for your actions. If you get arrested. go to court, watch how fast, you change from victim to assailant.

    Here is a much better way to throw an uppercut. Throw it in the same manner as a traditional uppercut(palm facing up) but bend your wrist back. That accomplishes several things. First, it angles the fingers away from the hard jawbone of your attacker. Secondly, it allows you throw the uppercut without twisting your wrist or arm in an unnatural angle. Finally, it allows you to strike with the hard bones that make up the heel of your hand.

    @heavymetalkid999 - No, this is an urban myth that you can kill someone by shoving their nose up into their brain. The nose is made of flexible cartilage, not bone and the brain sits back so far that it's well protected anyway.
    In fact, one of the benefits of this strike is that even if you do miss with this uppercut and hit the nose, you'll still get a powerful strike in that may not knock someone out with one punch...but it can still end the fight with one punch.
    Great question! Thanks!

    The palm strike to the nose won't kill anyone... It'll hurt like hell, though. (I've taken a few). The bone fragments would have to penetrate one of the hardest bones in the body... The uppercut does have some practical use in a streetfight in clinch range, though I wouldn't use it as a first punch...

  • @Warrior
    @Warrior  13 років тому

    @ShowYourWorking - Very, very similar. almost identical I would say. This "uppercut" gives you the option of using it as a "knockout punch" and also a head control. It can be thrown while grappling, or just in close quarters combat striking range. Palm heel punching techniques are very versatile in self defense.

  • @Warrior
    @Warrior  13 років тому

    @gamingplan - Depends upon your "experience". Not all self defense training is the same. The self defense techniques we focus on are close quarters combat street fighting and don't rely on strength and size for you to win a fight. I'm not saying that size and strength aren't helpful. But the fact is, in a real street fight, a smaller person can easily defeat a larger attacker if he knows where and how to strike and even knock someone out with one punch.

    Uppercuts are great in the flow of a fight when you're in close and punching fast, but I like to throw them with the lead arm, not the trailing arm, which I like to use to throw a straight punch (cross), esp in the situation I see here. Press the attack and throw combinations to keep him on the defensive: l jab (to cover the eyes), r cross, l uppercut, r hook, l hook in very quick combination. One of the hooks should catch him solid if you're stepping into him.

    Rule #1 in a fight:
    NEVER let them get that close.
    Rule #2 IF they do, wrap your body around them (even if you have to take a punch) and get them onto the ground.
    If your experienced and have skill them you don't really need to wrap your body around them, just use your favorite take down maneuver, but then you already knew not to let them get this close.

    Palm heal is good, but like a fisted uppercut you are still striking near the facial triangle. Problem: Teeth. If you miss the chin you could drive your hand into his mouth. You then risk a blood borne infection. You could win the altercation, but ultimately lose. Better to use a palm heal to the side of the jar, temple, etc.
    Better yet....a fist or hand to the throat.

  • @supercell42
    @supercell42 12 років тому

    This would definitely save your hand being broken on the guy's chin but it looks like a much more awkward angle to strike at, just doesn't look natural. The power of an uppercut is generated from your bicep in an upward hooking motion, this looks more like a hard push to the jaw, I don't even know if you could call it an uppercut.

    The palm uppercut is very effective for creating distance from your attacker. At this point, it will give you distance to run and avoid the fight. If you are in a closed room like jail or prison and cannot get away, several well timed fist uppercuts can stop any attacker from wanting to continue. I've survived several years using both techniques. We all bleed at the end of the day.

    You could also aim for the soft area between the chin and throat. Same effect. Less chance of breaking your wrist if you use a punch.

    A study was published in 2005 by NCBI 'Concussion in professional football: comparison with boxing head impacts--part 10' which found that the short hook is not only the most powerful punch by in Boxing but also the punch that will most likely result in a knock out.

    Most fighters, street or martial arts, are always expecting the upper cut and any other sneak attack. Better to concentrate on anything your opponent hands or gives you to work with or attack to the torso, nerves, and soft tissue areas. Head shots only piss off your opponent if you even connect. Mostly you miss and then are open to attack.

    @AK47powpow - Got it. Thanks for explaining your statement more. We try to keep the conversation valuable on the videos so we can all share advice. Yours is always welcome and yes...this IS an ongoing discussion. :-)
    The main point with the video is to use the palm, but also to use the centerline because it's harder to defend. Not trying to imitate MK, but the more vertical the strike, the better chance of getting a knockout from the head snap. Angles offer multi-directional head response.

    @CFPBcreations If you knock someone unconscious it is best to help them by lifting their head up for air, if you bust their nose in and they can't breathe through their nose, calm them down and get them through breathe through their mouth, etc.
    It isn't easy to kill someone unless they're really that fragile. Ofcourse, you should never take a fight too far, clean knockout, help them out, walk away.
    My experience came from a bunch of school fights.

    Also when using the palm heel your fingers blocked his vision so you can attack with your other hand or feet and he won't see as your hand is in his face so the attacks will be more successful.

    Great technique for pretty much anyone, easy to learn and do, and if you make contact something bad will happen to the bad guy every time. Most people will be talking or have their mouth open so there will be some broken teeth or bitten tongue. And drunk or angry guys will never see it coming because they get tunnel vision. Very good video, thanks .

    There is another benefit for the palm strike he didn´t mention, it is more powerful than a fist strike. Try hitting someones chest with a palm strike vs a fist strike and you will confirm what I´m saying.

    The palm heel thing sounds nice but I prefer just using the hardest parts of ur body to attack ie elbows and knees. Idc who u r several knees to the face and/or nose and ur not going to want to fight anymore. I've fought multiple street fights and never lost so using the right tools and having the right mentality to target appropriate areas and u'll win easy as that.

    not if you are in controle. ive been homless for three years and am just now getting back on my feet and ive delt with alot of situations, and if you stay calm, you will be fine, you will know when to run and when to hit, youll save yourself if you meditate while fighting, as you train meditate it all starts with a kata or form, the movment you practice over and over to get your next belt if done while meditating will teach you how to be calm during fights. training should not be underestemated

    the downside to this technique is that it forces you to come in closer and get down lower - it's not as quick that way and you may be more vulnerable.

    I'm all for it if it ends fights. Best way to fight = ONLY fight when forced to - when attacked or when someone else is attacked - and end violence quickly with minimum harm to both you and the person you're attacking necessary to end violence. Why is that the best way? Because that's what morally upright people do, Christian Jew Muslim Hindu Buddhist atheist agnostic whatever. Thanks for the video

    @joerowland I never said self defense was bad judgement. If you can't see that you getting into a fight every time you leave the house because "some dick head is attacking you," then there is nothing for you to learn. When I leave the house, nobody attacks me or my woman or my dog. That doesn't regularly happen to people who try to stay out of trouble. I am having a nice life, thank you.

    You can hurt your fingers with an upward Palm strike, you only have afew inches more of space and you don't usually miss with an uppercut anyway so your not increasing your hit likelihood AND ABOVE ALL IT CUTS POWER IN HALF NOT INCREASES IT!!!!!

    I wish everyone should be respect one another instead of making negative comments on the technique. It is up to each person on how he/she used it. Years ago I learned Tae Kwon Do and never used my hands to fight. But one night, I practiced uppercut technique and the next day I had to defense my friend who got his nose cut by a crazy 250-lb guy. I was 115 lbs and fast, he tried to knock me out with his punches, but cannot hit me. I split-ted his chin with an upper cut and he went backward.

    I'm not 100% certain that you want to try to squat your way into a blow outside the ring. Everyone is potentially dangerous, it doesn't matter who it is, knives objects etc., the point is to halt the violence and get distance. In a street/bar fight you want to give yourself time to get away, not rack up points with good form. Because you always need to have the philosophy: I don't WANT to be in a fight. This video says blind/push away - it's a good idea.

  • @Albo2151997

    Some of these one hit knock out moves can kill someone if used with excessive force. If I get attacked, I really don't want to kill the attacker even if he is dangerous(unless he's carrying a knife or gun). I wish I knew how much force to put in each move. Besides, in the middle of the fight, you're probably not going to be thinking of how hard to hit him.

    @kevinownsdc - It's hard to hit a moving target. You can't worry about his punching - take the offense. Once you land the uppercut, he won't be thinking about punching you. He'll be trying to figure out how to break his fall as he's headed to the ground. Do you see the difference here in mental conditioning? Don't think defensively in a street fight self defense scenario, ok?

    your completely right about using other punches to get an opening for the uppercut, but you cant just go straight in trying to hit someone with it. it is extremely hard to hit someone with an uppercut because an uppercut is telegraphed a lot, most good fighters tuck their chins anyways, and its really hard to hit such a small target when its moving. instead wait for the opportunity to come to you, i like to use it as a counter for a hook or after a devastating body shot but thats just me.

    You really have to look for the uppercut usually street fighters dont have head movement so your pretty much free to throw assuming you can tell when they are coming in with an attack. If they do use head movement it will only be a duck or lean back.
