I feel your pain. I just did all the coolant and vaccum lines. Then the valve cover gasket after watching your videos. Proceeded to watch all the rest of your amazing videos on the tt and do all the same fixes. Just to find out I need a new axel, emergency brake line, turbo, mirror motor, and radiator + radiator fan. Keep pushing!
Sorry to hear that, the struggle is real dude. Thanks for documenting these kind of issues they really help other with similar issues diagnos their car problems with yours. This makes me think mine might be doing the same thing. I guess it's time for a big boy snail ...🐌
Not sure if you've looked into this already, but just in case: there's an old mod that we used to do back when the k03/k04 frames were still a hot item to mod and that is to use extension springs (which can be found in places like home depot for sub $10) and come in packs of 5lbs spring and 10lbs spring packs. Pair them up to your desired tension and loop them from the top of the wastegate neck/nipple, down to the adjustment nut. This is something I also had to do myself back when I ran a k03 - it helped IMMENSLY in not only its ability to spool, but also hold boost. These stock turbos have really lazy wastegate actuators, especially with age. This can have almost identical characteristics to what you're experiencing since the wastegate lacks the ability to regulate appropriately, despite the n75s request (this is not to say your turbo isn't tired however, this is just super common). I would still hold out hope if you don't have any excessive shaft play and the seals are not passing oil into the compressor or exhaust housing. If nothing else, we could use another properly set up big turbo TT around! Keep it up!
For a little more context, since the wastegate flap inside the exhaust housing is mechanically linked to the wastage actuator rod, the exhaust pressure alone can be enough to overcome the the wastegate actuator and open it prematurely as well as open it more than is desired - thus bleeding off your pressure to hit the target boost. These turbos are notorious for spiking and falling flat on their faces as a result.
I was a bit sad when you side"wrap up series". Don't hold back on technical details. Thats what will make people come back, when they need to watch it again, because their TT requires the same repair. The formula to a good story is always the "Three Act Method". : ) All that matters is you show the process the best you can. Your videos were alway pretty slick production wise. Great content....Love-it!
Oh by "wrap" series I meant vinyl wrap series for the tt! The tt series definitely isn't coming to a close any time soon haha. It's got a lot of work that needs done. Thank you for the support! The 3 act method is great advice too! Ill be sure to include as many details as I can as well. Thank you for the support!
@@HunterDirection Haha! So glad too hear you meant vinyl wrap! Classic! Haha! Since I’ve had my TT it’s been a real unknown upgrade wise. Supposedly it’s had money spent on it. I installed the H&R adjustable swaybars, and whiteline adjustable link arms. Superpro double offset lower control arm bushes. Top and bottom rear adjustable control arms(to remove camber from lowered springs). I just bought the steering tierod kit. Future projects. Thank for a great reply
Big adventure with the TT like the majority of us ,TT owners ! Good to pick up some details on your vids. I see that you get the battery on charge when you plug the pc. To much consumption ? Maybe I have to do that with VCDS. With my car, MOT failed cos too mich Co2 😢 I suspect my old sport catalyst to be dead. Anyway, keep on ;)
No need for battery charger with VCDS. VCDS is not reading and writing the ECU binary file which is procedure you don't want to fail. So battery charger is to make flashing a ECU more fail safe.
Hey, I am also diagnosing my boost problems with Motoza. First, my injector duty cycle is exceeding 98% WOT, so I will probably go 550 like you. 386cc should be fine but i think my injectors are tired. Second, how many miles you had before swapping turbo? My turbo is around 75000mi old. But currently having P1557 and P1297 so I am not sure what is happening. Waking our 1.8Ts are very involving process for sure. I learn a lot from your video. Thanks a lot. -225hp owner
turbo concepts looks like they make a kit that you might be interested in. perhaps new rods along with it, but as long as you aren’t pushing a ton of sudden torque you might be able to get away with the stock ones.
Awesome video! Sometimes the unexpected can be a blessing in disguise. I would have a custom downpipe/ manifold made and go big turbo. Might as well do it now while the turbo is bad.
Yeah that's a really tempting option at the moment. Ill have to do a bit of thinking and see what all id need and whatnot. I'm stoked you liked the video!
@@HunterDirection I’ve just learned in life to do it once and right the first time so you don’t have to do it again. I had thought about the Frankenturbo also but after watching CO Motorsports channel I just want to go with what they recommend. They are building 1000hp 1.8T so they definitely know what they are doing. I’m going to save up and get a Garrett turbo and a Haltech elite. Then I’ll build the motor. Depends on your power goals though. Definitely an awesome channel and something I look forward to watching!!👍
I think mine is on its way out aswell, what a timing. Mine recently started this really loud spooling sound at low revs. My boost also drops to 13-14psi in the higher revs, so im planing to replace it soon asweel.
Dang, I'm sorry to hear about the turbo, what are you planning on swapping in? Sounds like it's behaving similarly to my car. Thank you for the support!
Wow, I'm going through the exact same thing with Motoza right now. I saw that you had the wires reversed in your last video but thought you might've just miss spoke. I did mention it to Motoza because I thought I might've had mine backwards. Unfortunately for me I still haven't worked out why my fuel trims are off. I have deletes so looks like that may be rhe issue. One thing I can tell you for sure is that you should check your fuel injector cups on your Grams manifold for leaks. I did a smoke test due to trying to find a boost leak and all four injector cups were leaking. I took them out and put teflon tape on the injector cup threads and the low boost code went away so that's probably your issue.
You could always get another k04 or a maxspeedingrod one for a inexpensive fix for the time being. And will prolly feel significantly better/faster comparatively. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yeah that or a hybrid of some kind would be a solid temporary fix while I start piecing together a real kit and engine internals. Great idea! Thank you for the support!
My 02 just hit 117k, this kinda gives me hope my turbo lasts a lot longer. But I am looking to get a hybrid. What are you deciding to go with? I was looking at frankenturbo kit from urotunning.

the struggle is real - i am having some very similar issues, keep your chin up and see it as an opportunity to improve upon an already epic car.

Time to go big IE RODs and bearings and upgrade to a big turbo and mafless. You'll put out huge power.
Give Turbo Lab America a call. He can rebuild and machine just about any turbo. He’s done k03 and k04 on his UA-cam channel before.

Rebuild the one you got for now. Im doing a clutch in my 05, and id rather do a turbo!
I have 2 K04-022 turbos. I have one that I was planning on rebuilding with Turbolabs build kit and billet compressor wheel. Let me know. I am in WA.
Get an XSpower K04 hybrid, they can support up to 300whp :D
Hi Hunter, sidebar question...Do you think the steering wheel airbag from your TT will fit the S4? It's so much nicer.
Drop in a frankenturbo, I am going to pick up one when I am in the US at Christmas.
That's a super solid idea. I'm sure that would feel way faster than what the car has currently!
Original turbo going? Sounds to me like it's big turbo time

i think you can send the turbo to somebody to rebuild it, without changing it.
