Really appreciate your videos. I grew up in a fly fishing family and got away from it for many years, just getting back into it. It's nice to see a regular dude strip away the pretense and tell it how it is. Keep making videos!
I like your outlook. "If you have to catch the most or biggest fish to enjoy yourself you're doing this for the wrong reason." Truer words have never been spoken.
You are awesome !!! Sarcasm and useful stuff all in one video !!! I teach fly fishing and have been trying to figure it out for 40+ years and you are spot on. Some times I think people take up fly fishing because they ran out of golf crap to buy and need a new hobby with all kinds of trinkets.
I once owned a rod vault. My garage door fell on it and broke every rod inside and the vault itself. Safe to say I learned my lesson, also thought you'd appreciate that story.
Ben, if I didn’t have a rod vault on my 4Runner you wouldn’t have given me a “Huge Fly Fisherman” decal when we met in Parshall!! Which the decal is now on!
My buddy has a fly rod, line, 4 lb leader and a couple of size 14 hooks. Walking down to the river he used to pull a little wool from the end of his old red sweater or his old black woven hat and tie the fibres on one of the hooks. He could catch as much as anyone.
@Marcos C indeed yorkshire has definitely got my vote👍 Personally myself I prefer the river Meon just because it's what I'm used to but I'd flick a fly at anything. The fisheries are something to behold as well. Almost all of the fisheries in the UK are joined to the trout masters competition. I'm 14 but they suit all ages (as I'm going into the trout masters youth finals in August). If you do ever decide to fish over here my tips are: *Don't only fish with gnat imitations or small flies *I only use 2lbs flourocarbon on the rivers for brownies but I will step up to 20 lbs flourocarbon for Atlantic salmon. Also if I'm fishing a fishery with trout over 6lbs I'll step up to 4lbs flourocarbon🙂 *Think outside the box(you'd be surprised how many fish I have found in ditches). *Tie flies similar to original patterns but adapt it slightly(some people might think this is a waste of energy but I say better safe than sorry). *Don't just fish for salmonoids. Ive had some great fun with mackerel, garfish, scad, Pollock and bass in saltwater and in freshwater there are always pike, perch, carp, bream, rudd, roach, dace , the possibilities are endless.😄 Sorry for the long reply but I'm stuck at home with nothing to do as the weather is appalling so I'm bored.😅 If you have any more questions on the fishing over here just let me know. Tenkara is how I started fly fishing and I still love using it on smaller streams or if I just want to get out and not have to worry about a bunch of stuff.
I started fly fishing back in the days when Herter’s was the source of gear and Orvis hadn’t left Vermont. I have a 50 yo vest covered with gadgets on reels. My most frequently used is my leader straightener. Buy everything that looks appealing or useful. Keep what works and don’t let some kid tell you you don’t need it
Great video except for the thoughts on waders. As a Florida boy I can tell you that waders are needed everywhere but Florida. Out side of Florida there are a lot of cold places with great fishing. I mean really cold too! The high in some of these great fishing places is below 60. Heck some time the fish are biting like crazy and it's below 50! And you know what else? When it is this cold there are no bugs! NO BUGS! Get your waders and go north boys!
As a yacht designer, I know you can't have a tower on a drift boat, but every time I see that boat in my YT choices, and given what is showing up on flats boats... I fall for it.
Aight. As someone who lives in Montana and am trying to fly fish, your boat comment was fantastic. It’s so much easier in a boat. I mean it’s because I’m not good and spend more time fixing mistakes, but wow that was funny.
Dude I love your videos! So true on all you have said in this one!! I fish Lake Havasu and there is nothing funnier than seeing someone in waders when I'm in shorts and water socks and the outside temp is 120+ 🤣🤣🤣
I agree on all except the leader straightner. And not because I can’t just pull on the line and straighten. No. Cuz it says Dan Baileys and I got it when I was 12ish on a Fam trip to Yellowstone. I didn’t get to fish but I did get to shop. And at that time Dan had a shop in West. It’s probably a swanky lunch spot now. Love your videos Ben. Keep them coming Btw. I’m missing my FG drift boat who new aluminum was harder than the hope diamond. That thing bites back.
Awesome video! Might get some flack for this, but for me the best way to figure out quickly how to reduce what you carry with you, is by fishing with a float tube.
The lakes where I live in California do not allow bodily contact and you need waders or a boat also you have tons of trees usually on the back so you cast range is limited lastly most people on the shore walk right behind you while fishing so you have to stop and check behind you which gets annoying so getting off the shore is kinda the way to go, you don't need it but it helps in some areas at minimum waders which are fun to bass fish in.
I actually got in to fly fishing because of tenkara. The streams and rivers where I live just aren't that big, and it's easy to take with me and my one box of flies.
Agree with most of this, except Tenkara. Tenkara is a legitimately easy, fun, and productive way to fish. If you don't like it because it's trendy, great, say so. But, as far as simple, easy, cheap ways to get out and fish, it is untouchable
It’s not that I don’t like it, I just think it should be called cane pole fishing instead of fly fishing, because that’s what it is. But hey, do what makes you happy, and that makes me happy.
@@HugeFlyFisherman Yeah, do what makes you happy, sure. But, please explain your argument as to why it is not fly fishing? Fly fishing I've only caught maybe a 4 inch brown trout but it made me feel like a kid again. Caught it off a dry fly but had a much larger trout bite and spit a nymph. So now I watch fly fishing videos because I'm 200 miles away from my fishing spots and it's mid winter here in Canada. A bit too cold to fish for me, all my gear would freeze up.
wading is illegal in montana for sure! also sick ABLE shirt!
Hah, good work Ben. Just happened upon your channel very recently and share many of your same viewpoints - only I express them differently. Nice work!
Good vid bro lol I do have a crap load of old flies I’m gonna hook my nephew up lol
You don't need "sugary drinks" either. But as a flyfishing boat designer, I like Montanans buying my plans. Lots of Canadians too.
i would like a huge fly fisherman branded leader straightner
your edits are great
Do we need to share spots so hopefully there’s even more people there next year?
YOU need one of our flyfishing shirts!!😉
As a new and frugal fly fisherman, this is hilarious.
Pretty sure Tippet doesnt go bad unless its exposed to UV rays or extreme temps though.
I think it gets ridged and fragile after a couple years
That was q breath of FRESH AIR !!
Great video
Few things you forgot... You don’t need expensive shit... skill and patients beats expensive shit EVERY TIME. Also, you don’t need to know 6,000 knots... 2 knots is all you need to know... clinch & nail... DONE... anything more and you’re just earning a merit badge!
As someone who has always been a minimalist fly fisher, you’ve inspired me to thin it out even more! Why do I have flies I have not tied on in 5 years??? Sure I only have 2 small boxes in my tiny waist pack, but 25% of my flies I never use! Keep it up!!
Matarelli whip finisher, yeah I know that's for fly tying not fly fishing but, that's another thing you don't need. Learn to whip finish with your fingers.
4:07 I will never give up the boat lifestyle
Ladders at Pyramid lake...I miss fishing at Pyramid lake. Leave the bad attitude. I get to go fishing, attitude is gone. Dont care if I catch a huge fish or a small fish...or no fish. I got to go fishing, the attitude is going to be awesome. Keep up the great videos.
