So many have given you the kudos that I associate myself with, so I want to comment on another aspect of your video. I so appreciate your gentle, intriguing music background. Anything other than distorted guitar riffs that seem to be de rigueur whenever there is a video about woodworker or tools is greatly appreciated..

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy the music choice. I’m a big fan of classical music!

Great video but be careful with those shirt sleeves and the table saw. I have had a bad accident myself after 51 years using wood machinery. I knoe John Heisz will tell you about his years of experience but accidents do happen. Sorry for the safety rant.

    Nice project and well presented.
Of course they need to be as long as the rulers so you are kinda stuck with making a big tray.
    Some thoughts:
Maybe you could use real magic (by which I mean magnets) as the catch.
What if the parallelogram had a longer base than the drawer? The hanging frame (that attaches to the cabinet) is the same size as the drawer but it looks like it could reach further back without messing up other things and this could let you lengthen one of the parallelogram arms and that might reduce racking (which i imagine is the problem)
A torsion bar or the like connected at the middle of the back of the drawer might even out the tension (left/right) and maybe with an eccentric bit of stuff in that connection it could have two stable stations - one at each end of travel (out and stowed)
I'm a bit far from a set of legos so I'll have to leave it at that.

    •  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the ideas!
The base cannot be lengthened with my set up right now. The position on the drawers and bar on top is critical and unless I wanted to extend the whole drawers forwards I could. Not make the bars longer altogether.
Magnets would definitely work depending how heavy would you put in it is! For the rulers it’s definitely a viable option!
Torsion bars are something I though of and perhaps I’ll try it one day!

Would some lubrication and wear (open and close them a bunch) on the hinges help the long drawer open better?

    •  4 роки тому

I don’t open it all that often, just a few times a week so I’m not sure. It got slightly tighter with the change in humidity but the other didn’t. The wax really Helped the second one I made so I’m sure it would have helped the long one too!

I’ve been pondering the longer drawer. What if the left and right brackets were tied together by a long dowel (in place of those pivot nubs) and the drawer move around the dowel. This would reduce differential movement between both ends.

    •  4 роки тому +1

Appsolultly! I came to the same conclusion but I didn’t do it because
A: I only though of it after aha
B: a regular dowel would probably not work. A quarter tern in torsional give is probably enough to make it stop working so either the dowel would need to be a hard wood and fairly thick, or I’d need to go with something made of metal.
But over all you are right, it’s definitely he way to fix this and if I ever do this again I’ll try it. I use them everyday so maybe I’ll remake them for fun some time!

    • @BiggMo
      @BiggMo 4 роки тому +1

Ebenisterie Éloïse: consider a fiberglass rod, a bit easier to bond to wood parts, also torsional give will also be a by-product of friction along the width. UHMW bushings might be worth considering.

Thanks for the idea! It would definitely be a good way to do it but I may stick to steel just because part of me loves to make things in an old timmy way. We will see!

My OCD is playing havoc with the last glass panel to the right , it's 20mm short of the ones beside it .

    •  4 роки тому +1

Haha yes the workbench is actually horrifically built. There is no real joinery and everything is made from scraps or the wood I have on hand, so not everything is the size it should be. It’s also not planned out at all. I just add on over time. But that’s what I like about it, it’s not ment to be perfect, it’s just practical and a great place to experiment! Maybe when I move to a different shop I’ll make a fancy one that is up to cabinet making standards, I’ll see!
