  • Today we're doing another "very hard" EU4 achievement. Start as France and own 100 cores in Europe before 1500. Technically I picked up another achievement too...

    I actually don't know much about the non-volcanic geology of France, but I do know a little bit about the volcanic geology! Mainland France has a few volcanic fields (regions of volcanic activity) that are technically considered still active due to having had eruptions more recently than 50,000 years ago, like the Chaîne des Puys volcanic field in central France, which includes the Puy de Dôme volcano. These volcanoes formed in a rift system over a period of about 90,000 years, with the most recent eruption occurring a little over 6000 years ago.
    France was actually the country which experienced the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, but not in Continental France-it happened on Martinique, a French possession in the Caribbean. The volcano Mont Pelée began erupting unexpectedly on 23 April 1902, mainly just ash and steam, but it scared the populations of many smaller towns nearby into temporarily fleeing to the city of St Pierre, which was the cultural capital of the French Caribbean at the time. The eruptions grew more and more violent, before a brief lull, and then increased in intensity again. And suddenly, on the morning of 8 May 1902, a pyroclastic surge (basically a cloud of superheated gas and ash) emanated down from the volcano and straight into St Pierre. Around 30,000 people died in barely a few minutes, cooked or suffocated to death. There were only two* survivors in the direct path of the flow-a man in a poorly-ventilated prison cell and a man who lived near the edge of the valley. Both of them, and the handful of other survivors that were at the edge of the cloud, suffered severe burns. One of those two survivors in the main path narrowly avoided being killed by a subsequent pyroclastic flow only a few weeks later.
    *Some sources claim three survivors-a little girl named Havivra da Ifrile is said to have escaped by fleeing in a small rowboat to a small sea cave, where she suffered some burns and fell unconscious; she was found hours later drifting in the boat 3-4 km out to sea.

    12:10 “we don’t have canons yet, but we do have canons on board, somehow” , canons had been around for a while, but you couldn’t use them in battle back pause they were way to heavy, and got stuck in the roads, let alone muddy battlefields. But hard wood on floaty ships, very manageable.

      Hate to break it to you dude but that's not quite right. Artillery was incredibly expensive and wasn't prevalent on ships until well into the 17th and 18th centuries. But the main thing is how rare it was, during the eighty and thirty years war even the greatest powers in Europe like France and Spain would only have 50-80 guns for a major siege of a city. Cardinal Richelieu tried to arm the French navy with cannons in the thirty years war, but only managed to acquire enough for some 20 odd ships. Plus galleys as they existed for the games time period essentially never had cannons. EU4 just says that ships have cannons because boardings/troop numbers on ships would add an added level of complexity that was unnecessary.

      @johndunne3547 Рік тому +5

      @Immortal Science of Hauntology You're absolutely right. I completely forgot about small-calibre guns, they were produced and used in much larger quantities on ships. Thanks for the correction
