Hi 👋 I used to to make lead casting at home when I was 19 years old I am 70 now I loved foundry work you see it at work then you do it at home keep up the good work Davyone
I love the video..Having around casting and pattern making most of my life It sure is nice to see this reverting to the home shop.. One thing I always tell someone that is just starting is although there is a lot to know to do it efficiently and with good quality, one must also remember that casting has been around for thousands of years.. If they can do it you can too.. You can get as involved as you want with what you have at hand and it's just fine..
I have a spring Sand Creek in my backyard and I got some kitty litter cuz we got a couple of animals running around the house I'll have to give this a try do you have any tips or some good advice?
its also more likely to carry sand in with the flow and also catch air bubbles.. but im glad you enjoyed it and im glad i got you thinking about it even though you have never tried it :D
I am about to make some green sand myself and i am glad that i don't have to burn out second hand store blenders to make the bentonite clay by following your method and my initial hunch of just using water to break it down
Thanks for your video, I've not done any casting but was wondering if the "blowout" I think you called it in your casting, might have been caused by excess talcum powder that you left in the lower half of your mold. You brushed the face where the two halves join, but left what looked like a considerable amount in the mold cavity when you placed the upper half on to the lower half.
Maybe there was to mush baby powder in the corners when you made the mold. I seen it and was thinking you was going to blow it out from the corners. It looked a bit to much and Im guessing thats what your seeing at the end of the video. Just my 2 cents
Enjoyed the video. Now, I admit that I am absolutely clueless about casting, and in fact your two videos are the only ones I've seen. But, I would like to know why you do not make the gutters for the liquid on the top half, rather than the bottom half? To me it appears that if you make the gutter on the top half, the gravity and natural flow of the liquid would help it to spread more evenly throughout the mold. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing mate Just about to Learn casting myself I wonder if the pitting affect could be steam from the moist greensand Just a thought not a criticism Cheers from across the pond
Hi HD, I am just about to start adventures in home casting w aluminium and trying to find where to get a good crucible, longs etc in Aus? Is there a shop or online store you go to? Im in Sydney. THANKS for your videos! :)
Tom Peterson no that just sandy dirt.. You want the finest sand you can get. At the very least you can go too where they have the cement in Bunnings and get brickies sand, but you'll get a crap surface finish
I'm hoping the bag of chemical spill absorber in bought at Walmart will work. it's made of benzene clay. also for a large volume of good clean, very Fine sand I bought sand used for sand blasting at Harbor Freight . will save some time because I won't need to sift it
Darrin Taylor that clay might be better with oil rather than water.. have a look on the label, if it's made for oil clean up it might be worth testing a small amount
Hello, I am also Australian! I love how familiar everything in your Video feels. I've had a hard time finding all the correct things while pursuing my interest in metal work. I was wondering about the ratio of Sand/Clay, the only sand I have found is 20KG Bags of Play Sand from Bunnings. I was wondering how many kg of Clay I should mix with 20kg of Sand. I'll also be using the exact clay you have, surprisingly easy to get. ^_^
Blake Grayson i tried to reply and im not sure if it worked... but you really want fine washed sand from a garden supply but play sand will get you started and about 10-15% clay
HomeDistiller Okay, I'll take a look for a more fine sand. I actually have a Garden supply shop not too far from me and it didn't even occur to me to look there. Thank you.
all sand is silica sand. if it's nice and white it's even rather pure.. this is washed fine sand from a garden supply place. the place where you would by gravel, sand, gypsum, etc
The reason the chuck is crap is --- on the side of your drill it says RYOBI. I've had Millwaukee and Bosch drills with keyless chucks and they [the chucks] worked just as well as any keyed chuck I've ever used. I also had a Ryobi drill [18 volt] which wasn't worth squat. All aspect of that piece of junk were next to useless.
how can i get very very fine sand? at my place the ground is all sand no loam at all. but the sand is coarse i tried filtering by silting. i have no clue how i can make it finer ANY SUGGESTIONS?
You may not like the amount of time it takes, but you can use a fine flour sift and sift the sand my hand. Time consuming, but you'll get a nicer final product.
Try DE Walt or Hilti drills. You can not go wrong with either of these drill especially the Hilti. But don't go to your local hardware and expect to buy either for the price of a Ryobi. It isn't going to happen.
yeah or a makita drill i know they are all great drills.. but i would have expected atleast a useable product from ryobi.. and i just dont get the use to spend the cash on a $300 drill
HomeDistiller If it makes you feel better, I've bought DeWalts and Ridgids with crappy chucks. I think your right, the truth is that a keyed chuck is the only bulletproof tech but people like me are always loosing the stoopid chuck key. Also, that greedy scumbags that make drills make 50 different sizes of chuck. And they want 10 bucks for a chuck key.
Nicely done there, couple of points I’d like to share, with the holes in your complete work am I correct in that you haven’t used a degasser addictive to your molten mix? You can use soda crystals from the kitchen cleaning isle in your local supermarket, check it is made from sodium carbonate, wrap up a level tablespoon into the aluminium foil. Pop it in when up to temperature and keep the packet/foil wrap submerged as deep as possible, once the bubbling has stopped, Second best bit. Of advice is look at Myfordboy on UA-cam, there’s people that are good and then there are the exception to them, this guy surpasses most others, he makes small alloy castings for his model steam engines etc. He’s very good at the process and has a blog at. Myfordboy.blogspot.com. Has loads of great information about casting etc anyway good luck with your future projects....Phil o
I do degas, and I also have been watching myfordboy for many years.. I have found however that sodium carbonate doesn't work well for degassing (much the same as the UA-camr luckygen).. I've found that chlorine tablets that's used for pools is much much more effective although much much more dangerous.. Thanks for the comment and suggestions

Nice work. Most people would not think that casting with molten metal would involve such delicate skills.
I really appreciate that you posted that. Very informative, especially the part about using kitty litter for the clay. Thanks.
Thank you sir!!! Very good instructions. This will help me tremendously.

Thank you for your sharing. Very good green sand casting process video, i learnt more from your video.
very cool!! Thanks for the video. I know it was 10 years ago but it is still helpful.
Great video. Very informative.

THANKS FOR VIDEO ..BRILLIANT
I am about to make some green sand myself and i am glad that i don't have to burn out second hand store blenders to make the bentonite clay by following your method and my initial hunch of just using water to break it down
It takes some work.. And it might pay to make it even wetter than I did, and work it as it dries out
Good work indeed
your most welcome.. and thank you for being polite on a general very impolite forum.
Why are they impolite? I haven’t seen that much and I’ve watched 1000’s of videos

Now when you use the kitty litter do you also have to sift through the cat litter and separated from the clay before you mix it to the sand or no?
Would all of this mixing be done much easier with a cement mixer?
I am going to attempt your mix and see how we go. thanks .
Thank you .
Love the case of VB mate
Is the footprints necessary or optional for the recipe? :) :)
Thanks for the video
I wonder if a cement mixer would work for folding in the clay...
+J Alex Wheeler i think it would work quite well.. you would want a nice clean mixer though
I suscribed cus of your dryed steak and u have one of the most bizzare weird videos lol gj
Thanks for sharing mate Just about to Learn casting myself I wonder if the pitting affect could be steam from the moist greensand Just a thought not a criticism Cheers from across the pond
You are a f'**king legend!!
hello can i use chamotte and oil to make casting sand
thanks :D i plan to...
Hi HD, I am just about to start adventures in home casting w aluminium and trying to find where to get a good crucible, longs etc in Aus? Is there a shop or online store you go to? Im in Sydney. THANKS for your videos! :)
just want to say: ryobi drills are crap with any chuck....
Good on you
do you have any clue if a bag of "sandy loam" will work from bunnings? i was going to try but my local bunnings didnt stock it
Tom Peterson no that just sandy dirt.. You want the finest sand you can get. At the very least you can go too where they have the cement in Bunnings and get brickies sand, but you'll get a crap surface finish
i searched for "so you think you can dance" and this popped up ???
Did you sieve the bentonite before you mixed it with water? Or did the larger granules just break down in the water during mixing?
Steve Popple it all breaks down when you add the water
Olá amigo tem como você mim ensina como fazer a areia que produto vc mistura com a areia obrigado.
lol at 7:07 I couldn't help but think: you need some hotties doing the macarana lol
Hey mate what ratio of water to kitty litter did you use and also is there a particular brand that works better than others, im also an Aussie.
Mitch Altmann i cant really remember but i think it was a 10:1 ratio
good afternoon. would this clay sand mix work for casting copper into a ball or rods.
it does yes,
You actually keep the sand a bit damp (3-6% depending on the metal type), because the vapour will make the surface smooth.
Of course. The sand won't work at all if it's not damp
where do you got the sand from? what is the name? is a silica sand? is to fine to show your foot print. thanks
Enrique
Enrique Aguilar i got the sand from a local garden supply, its fine washed sand
I'm hoping the bag of chemical spill absorber in bought at Walmart will work. it's made of benzene clay. also for a large volume of good clean, very Fine sand I bought sand used for sand blasting at Harbor Freight . will save some time because I won't need to sift it

What brand of kitty litter did u use
Peter Silva I can't remember.. You just want the clumping type
In my time on this planet, I have found there is no, better way to get something done elbow grease is the only way!
Can I use beach sand??
You can use whatever sand you like. It will just effect the surface finish..

what's the baby powder for?
Lachy Parker it stops the sand sticking to itself.. otherwise you wouldn't be able to spilt the mold
ah makes sense
It looked like you were dancing when you were mulling the sand
only aratar would be into this kind of thing... when are you going to make us an awesome sword?
-Goliss
Is that Bowmore I see you drinking?
Why the baby powder?
Max W its to stop the 2 halves of the mold sticking together
replace the chuck on that ryobi
nope. its a Bowmore bottle though ;)
how can i get very very fine sand? at my place the ground is all sand no loam at all. but the sand is coarse i tried filtering by silting. i have no clue how i can make it finer ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Make a ball mill. If you don;t know what it is, google it.
thanks, i know it. but wil this result in a usable powder of greensand?
Js kc255 i would imagine so, but i havent done it.

Hummm operating by hand, sounds like me most knights
you dont cast swords. you forge them
Be a tart it won't hurt
Greetings from U.S. Throw that cryobi away and go buy yourself a real drill. You'll be glad you did.
That thing went in the rubbish years ago lol
Really, cheapskates and overly college educated types buy Ryobi.
and douche bags that dont know what their talking about post comments like that
