Hurray. I have waded through lots of other peoples tutorials looking for just this thing.
Thank you for your understandable instructions.
You ARE AN EXCELLENT TEACHER! Short, concise words as you SHOW exactly what you teach! I've been searching for a video like this for 2 months and the ones I found were way too wordy, went on forever and were boring as hell... But yours are short, not wordy and get right to the point and showed me exactly what I wanted to learn--QUICK!
After watching your video, I scoured the yard sales & Salvation Army for blenders. I set the price at $10/per blender. Found 4-5 blenders at that price. As you pointed out, the blenders are not designed to do these types of operations.
Reason that I acquired so many blenders was that I wanted to attempt to pulverize a portion of my "play sand" as well as the Kitty Litter.
And yes..., before anyone points out the dangers of inhaling silica sand dust..., all respiratory precautions were done during ALL pulverizing operations.., I worked outside, wore a good quality respirator, and used a large shop fan to blow away the dust.
Now my ratio of ingredients is: 4 parts regular "double sifted" play sand, 4 parts "double sifted" pulverized play sand, & 2 parts "double sifted" Kitty Litter.
The resulting GreenSand is super fine, and produces a very fine surface on castings.
Thank you for your tutelage that helped me formulate my GreenSand!
Stay well!
Edit: pulverizing play sand really wears out the stainless steel blades on the blenders, and I actually pour the pulverized sand across a molybdenum magnet a few times, and removed a few grams of steel. I'm not sure if that microscopic steel would've caused any issues, but my OCD wouldn't let me not try this step..
Thanks for showing i enjoyed it no bullshit easy to listen to and a great result, keep up the good work.
All the best from Australia.....
Thanks Jeff! All the best mate :)
This is an amazing video nothing flashy just simple raw information that I was looking for
What a great tutorial. This is exactly what I was looking for! I'll be hitting the flea markets and garage sales for the blender. Thank you.
Thanks friend, share it with others...thanks for watching! 😊
I’ll second everything Jeff said. This is just what I was looking for as I am already making my wooden pattern and as I’m waiting for different parts to cure, glue, filler ect I want to get on with making the sand. Thanks so much for the lesson and showing how straightforward it really is. After seeing your kitten casting your green sand is more than good enough for me. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Thanks!, HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉😊
A brilliant clear video, well explained and easy to understand. You did a great job in educating others in learning a skill.
Thanks! :)
Thanks for showing, greetings from Austria.!
Wuwaooowwowoww great and simple!
I used to work in a steel foundry for a while many years ago (before UK got rid of most if its manufacturing industry) and was working with huge moulds and casts - your videos explain the whole process perfectly in a smaller scale and are brilliant! Thank you
Thanks Harry!, much appreciated!
Casting sand when used for metal has no water in it.
@@lenny108 it depends on what kind of sand you make, my sand uses water
@@MakinSumthinFromNuthin Let's say you pour a metal in that mold that has a temperature of 900 C the whole mold will explode when there is water in the sand. The water immediately turns into steam.
no bs, no nonsense, great instructional vid, thanks
Thanks Jonnie! 😊
Man, thank you very much
!
Your explanation is detailed
,effective and very easy to learn.
After a long search on the internet
I finally found it in this video of yours,
i was unsure and was bothered by the question of how to get started.
Now that I've seen and heard your explanation,
everything is easy...
Big friendly greetings from Serbia and thank you very much.
Glad you found it helpful! 😊
Brilliant! Looking forward to trying this!
Awesome video !!!!!!!!! Thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video! Looking to do that today and you just saved me a few hours of searching for bentonite! Thanks!
Great, glad you stopped by 👍🏼
One of the best teaching methods on U Tube. Now to give back- When sand blasting, you can use the cheaper sand, the kind that always clogs your gun, if you sift it the way Sumthin does. You can also sift with a larger sifter, the kind that has a squeeze-actuated arm that does the work. Saves a lotta money! Thanks again, Sumthin! Superior video!
Thanks!!!!!! Thanks for watching & Happy Holidays! 😊🎉
Kitty litter is diatomacious earth. Sand is silica. They are both silica. The dust from it will cause silicosis. You really need to wear a respirator or at the very least a dust mask when working with them to prevent silicosis.
Great advice, thanks
actually the kitty litter he mentioned, the one that lists clay on the label is bentonite clay. but yes a respirator is a must when working with anything this finely powdered.
The thing that makes play sand OK for kids is that the fine silica has been removed to reduce silicosis risk. Then the kitty litter adds it right back. We pay for that processing when we buy both, and do additional labor to mix them again. How much better is the result of this process than just sifting plain old regular free sand off the ground that already has bentonite in it?
Dustin Maki not sure of what you are talking about. Sand is sand and it does not lose its silica properties. The bentonite clay that is used for cat liter is commonly taken from Wyoming. Never dug up sand with bentonite already in it. I have never seen kids in a play box wear a respirator or on a beach covered in sand. I think people watching this video should wear a respirator for him instead being the little kid that say oooooooohhhhh your not wearing a respirator!!!!!!!!!!
@@jasongrinnell1986 I think he works for OSHA!! 😂
That´s what I was searching for! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Great! Glad you stopped by and that it helped you! Consider subscribing if you haven't already. I have other vids involving casting. Have a great day! :)
Buddy! You're awesome! Seriously thank You!
I am going to send that to my brothers....they dont believe me when I say it :)
Thanks for the great money saving tutorial.
After finding that a bag of casting sand on the internet was $85, plus expensive shipping, it was wonderful to learn that good casting sand can be made in this way. Also noticed you cut slots in the perimeter of your casting trays like the professional ones -- seemed like a great security measure. Good video.
Thanks, glad I could help you out! :)
You know your stuff. Loved!
Thanks! I appreciate ya watching! :)
Liked and subscribed - thank you. Great straightforward manner, not too much talking, but not leaving out any information either. Excellent!
Not too much talking eh? I know hundreds of viewers that would disagree with you! LOL Thanks Rusty! ~ Richard
Excellent walkthrough, thanks for taking the time!
Thanks!
I loved this! Laughed a lot with the whole kitty litter In a blender bit, but I have to say it’s pretty brilliant!
Very nicely presented ,no nonsense, straight and to the point.Never heard of play-sand in Ireland and kitty litter I also need to research.I also need to find another method of breaking down the kitty litter.(probably make another project out of that). One thing is sure ; I am going to have a go.And I think I will also have a go at making an air-tight lid so it holds as much moisture as it needs without having to remix. Thanks for sharing and I will let you know how it went.
Thanks, yes...an airtight container is perfect. Greetings from USA :)
Great value! Thanks for making it so easy to understand.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Thanks for that, it's a huge help. I've been asked to make a ring out of scrap gold which I'm looking forward to but I'm a complete novice at casting with no kit whatsoever so I'll be making what I need as much as possible.
thats awesome! if making jewelry look into lost wax casting
this was great. I've been wanting to experiment on casting brass/aluminum and this seems to be the cheapest and easiest way. thank for showing us this :-)
Aluminum, brass, cast iron....will work for all 😊
Great tutorial..and what a money saver,,in UK casting sand is expensive..cheers for the knowledge
Thank you
Thanks man, you answered all my questions. Great video.
Thanks straight forward and easy...
Sir, I love this video so much. I like it better than that other one I saw. I'm going to cast a little silver pendant with this method of making my own green sand. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this tutorial. You instructions are excellent. I am new to sand casting. I started off on my own with a pattern and tried plaster of Paris which ended up as a disaster. Huge mess and lousy results. Next I tried Portland cement. That too was an utter failure. My next attempt will be green sand. I am looking to cast small lead hammers to use in my home machine shop. I figure that as they get all mushroomed over, I can just melt them back down and cast new hammers.
U R Welcome! Perfect application!
Great info thanks for sharing.
Awesome instructions. We'll start with lost-foam casting in regular sand, but we'll get to this level down the road. Thanks for sharing!
YW!, I see people using regular sand all the time. Since I had green sand I figured I would just use that. Lost foam is pretty cool :)
Thank you so much! More yard sale shopping in order!!!!
You're Welcome! Check local Craigslist too...."GOLDMINE"
Dude, these are great tutorials! Thanks for this.
Thanks!!!
Watched another of your video and didn't know what green sand was. Then checked your channel and boom here it is. Great video. Thanks for making this!
Glad you found it! :)
Beautiful video, just like a flower.. :)
Thanks for sharing! I tired substituting time for work and just hydrated the clay to make it a liquid, poured it though a strainer and into the sand. Stirred a little every other day for 2-3 weeks until it was dry enough again. Less work grinding clay if you don't have a blender, but it too much longer of course.
Thats not a bad idea at all if you have the extra time....I thought about doing that as well. Nice job
Thanks mate for the lovely edition also for your time, fantastic👍👍👍
thanks!
Can't wait to try this 👍I just love channels like this, keep em coming😆
I hope you do try, keep me posted!
Thank you for the great video. I want to make some of this greensand. I have been using Petrobond but I am getting low and it is expensive so I am changing to homemade greensand. Thank you for your demo and instruction... I wish you good health for you and yours..
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the video. Answered on of my major questions. That mold looked impressive!
Thanks!
Reviewed this again, and would recommend respiratory protection when sifting your sand, and pulverizing your clay. I was very conservative when it came to personal protection, while working in dust environments. Still wound up developing work place asthma/COPD. Stay safe out there.
I found this very informative as since June last year I have been working in a foundary but there we use air set resin sand and I have bought myself a small melting furnace to try making stuff from aluminium cans and I have bought some petrobond casting sand but because of the expense of it was told to use green sand as backing for it so I don't use much .
Hello my Freind can show me more about aluminum foundry , i really want to learn it
If you can this is my email: zaherdamardji@gmail.com
Fantastic!
Awesome video Very easy to understand Thank You
Thank you for a superb video; I have been trying to make diving belt weights but so far have failed miserably; this instruction of the fine flour of play sand and cat litter will definitely work for me, so simple, effective and cheap too 👍
Great to the point instructions
Skill is strong in this one. Thanks for this great tutorial 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
TY!!!
Thank you! Great video. Now I know what I am doing tomorrow....
Nice!! 😊🤗
Excellent video. Thank you for this.
Thanks for watching & commenting! 😊
Thanks for sharing and thanks for a very informative video on how to make Green Sand for casting. Thanks again
Glad you liked it and found it useful. Consider subscribing! :)
I did subscribe. Downloaded this one and the casting of the Virgin of Guadalupe. I will look over channel and download more of your vids. Thanks a million
Welcome aboard! :)
Excellent in every aspect. Off to the store...
thanks for the informative video!
Great video! I will say though that it’s important to use a mask or to be outdoors when dealing with clay dust. It may seem innocuous but if it gets in your lungs, it’s not coming out.
Excellent job describing your process. Concise, clear, and to the point. Thanks for producing the video. I'm off to buy some play sand and kitty litter. I broke the mast hinge on my sailboat, and it looks like a simple sand casted part. I've always wanted to try my hand at sand casting, so needing a new hinge will be a chance for me to give this a shot. I have subscribed to you channel.
Good luck with your casting project! Thx for watching~ Richard
everything I needed to know and no BS, well done and thanks

I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Randy Louie instablaster :)
@Gregory Axton Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Gregory Axton it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!

thank you so much for the video. im just starting to make my blacksmithing and this helped a lot
Very welcome!
Wow this is great!! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for making it so easy.
You bet!
If you want very fine sand, you can get pre-used sand blasting sand. I find that after using the sand 5 times or more it's no longer useful for sand blasting but is very fine and great for high detail sand casting. nice video
Thanks for the tip 👍🏼
your welcome,, I made an interesting WOOD BURNING ALUMINUM FOUNDRY video on youtube. If you would like to check it out. Not everyone has access to propane, or other fuel sources so its a nice option. just search under WOOD BURNING ALUMINUM FOUNDRY. Feel free to use any ideas on any future videos. Robert
Glass bead sand? I have access to this. Good tip!
That is a great tip, thank you. I sure do appreciate you taking time to share your experience gained knowledge, bc I am brand new to this as I try to make it as a surprise for my husband. He's been dragging us all over the county for the stuff, but it's either marked up too high or not something they carry. Can't wait to see how the sand blaster sand compares to the play sand. Cheers!
Great video, thanks for sharing the info
YW, consider subscribing! :)
Thank you so much! Very good video.
Great Video!!
Thanks for the help. I will be making some up today and casting my first casting today. Pray for me.
Nice, just take your time and be careful not to put too much moisture in your sand, thats the most common mistake ~ Richard
Great video 👍
Great video, I have watched several, this is the best yet!
Thanks for the kind words :) Consider subscribin, lotsa DIY casting videos here! :)
Excellent. Thanks from Aus
Many thanks!
Commenting to save. Thank you!
Thanks we are just starting to sand cast and wondered.about the green sand . It was expensive to buy so this may be a good cost savings
No need to buy it.....make it
Exactly the info I am looking for. :D
Awesome....
Thank You!
thanks for the clear instructions! I am inching my way towards aluminum casting and I'll use this recipe when the time comes. I need to make a forge first! Now I'm off to watch your flask making video!
You're Welcome! I also have a forge build video if ya wanna check it out. Thanks for Watching! :)
+Makin Sumthin From Nuthin OK, I got ahead of myself and decided to try this today. home depot must get the sand from a different place around you. I got the same quikrete play sand and the same strainer from walmart and started to sift. I am not getting hardly ANYTHING. almost all of the sand is big enough that it wont go through that fine strainer. I grabbed the strainer from the house that isnt as fine and it let much more though but I am not happy with how course the sand is. Any ideas?
Usually the Play Sand is extremely fine sand...maybe they have a bad supplier at your store....Try the play sand at Lowes maybe ? :-/
Ran my homebrew foundry for the first time last weekend, melted some aluminum. Now I need something to pour in and found your video. About laughed my head off when I saw my power strip and scale in your shop. Thanks for taking the time to put this together, wonder if the wife is gonna kill me when the blender shows up missing?
Congrats! & HAHA
Sweet now I can make it.
Great tutorial thanks. Never though about using a sifter for the sand.
Thanks for Watching :)
good video very helpful.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
This is what i needed to know. Thank you so much.
Works well for me....good luck!!!
Excellent
Excellent demonstration, thank you for the ideas and the clear explanations. This green sand was always a bit of a mistery to me, thanks again.

Worked, I did use clay powder from a website but it still worked, thx
Great to hear!
cool..you got a subscriber here..all the way from the philippines.. thank you so much
GREAT! Thanks Carla, new casting video being uploaded now :)
I thank you! We did some casting in Jr. High, which was almost 40 years ago. (Can't remember it all)
Thanks!
@@MakinSumthinFromNuthin thank you
Good video will add another good way to refine the clay I use a bucket with a stick blender and mix it in water till I get well peanut butter consistency then I spread it on a tray and leave in sun for few days till dry then just pass thru a siv it crumbles really easy
Thanks...I may visit that idea and give it a try, sounds promising 😊
Great tip. Liked and subscribed 👍
Great video, thank you
thanks!
wow that's great just what I need , im wanting to caste sundials to put on concrete pillars I make , cheers
great video ty for the info
