Well, in Haifuri that wasn't a "sport", the battles were pretty real. Only the main task of "good guys" was mostly to incapacitate the adversary ships, not sink them.

The WW2 ships in this anime have been largely modernized. Much of it's components and internal workings are automated. It's how a small number of school-girls are able to run ships that are originally crewed by hundreds. Also, anime logic.
