Battle of Achelous (Byzantine Empire vs Bulgarian Empire)

- The Battle of Achelous between forces of Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) and Bulgarian Empire took place on 20 August 917, on the Achelous River near the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The battle, which was one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the European Middle Ages, was one of the worst disasters ever to befall a Eastern Roman army, and conversely one of the greatest military successes of Bulgaria. The Bulgarians obtained a decisive victory which not only secured the previous successes of Simeon I, but made him de facto ruler of the most of the Balkan Peninsula. Some of the significant consequences of the battle was the official recognition of the Imperial title of the Bulgarian monarchs as Tsar (Caesar), and the affirmation of Bulgarian Tsar equality vis-à-vis with Eastern Roman Emperor.

I believe that there is a lot of material for new tv series regarding the Balkan conflicts and Bulgarian history. Netflix or HBO can make a masterpiece, following the history of these lands. Bulgarian lands are really complex and the drama here is 100% guaranteed. And like in "Vikings", the early Bulgarian history has gods and believes which are in confrontation with the Christian religion. There are glorious victories and unthinkable defeats. The outcome from all actions is absolutely dramatical. And there are a lot of legends and persons which deserve a TV show production.
They would probably fuck it all up, just as they did in the HBO series Vikings.
@@jasip1000 its a movie.. generally in all historical movies and tv series - almost all in general- we can see mistakes and different persons, events or chronical actions. i guess that the important thing is that a movie be generally good and not totally wrong.

@@jasip1000 i totally agree with you. in this point of view all movies have mistakes.!!! hha
I've often thought largely the same things as well. And not just about our country, but this whole region in general. Byzantine history, in particular, is an even better, truly excellent source for a movie or, better yet, a series. For example, when I was reading Michael Psellos, especially the part about Basil II, I thought "Damm, with a bit of skill, this could be made just as interesting as Game of Thrones" (that's while GoT was still good, of course). Respectively, the medieval Balkans in general and also much of Europe during the Early Middle Ages are highly underrepresented, while having quite a lot of potential. The same goes for much of the rest of the world as well.
Bulgaria emerged as Byzantium's chief antagonist to its north, resulting in several wars. The two powers also enjoyed periods of peace and alliance, most notably during the Second Arab Siege of Constantinople, where the Bulgarian army broke the siege and destroyed the Arab army, thus preventing an Arab invasion of Southeastern Europe. Byzantium had a strong cultural influence on Bulgaria, which also led to the eventual adoption of Christianity in 864. After the disintegration of the Avar Khaganate, the country expanded its territory northwest to the Pannonian Plain. Later the Bulgarians confronted the advance of the Pechenegs and Cumans, and achieved a decisive victory over the Magyars, forcing them to establish themselves permanently in Pannonia.
During the late 9th and early 10th centuries, Simeon I achieved a string of victories over the Byzantines. Thereafter, he was recognized with the title of Emperor, and proceeded to expand the state to its greatest extent. After the annihilation of the Byzantine army in the Battle of Anchialus in 917, the Bulgarians laid siege to Constantinople in 923 and 924. The Byzantines, however, eventually recovered, and in 1014, under Basil II, inflicted a crushing defeat on the Bulgarians at the Battle of Kleidion. By 1018, the last Bulgarian strongholds had surrendered to the Byzantine Empire, and the First Bulgarian Empire had ceased to exist. It was succeeded by the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1185.

What is Byzantine? This state never existed under that name and was invented by a German historian in 1775. The only name of this state was Eastern Roman Empire.
technically it called itself Imperium Romanum and Basileia Rhomaion, aswell as Romania (Ῥωμανία), ie the roman empire/kingdom. they stopped calling themselves the imperium romanum orientale when the west fell.
Of course it's created by a German, the pretender 'Romans'.
so when you think about ,these germans falsificated history a lot, why always german historians ,who are they to talk about other people past, and now all think that bulgars were turkic while we croats and bulgars had almost identical tribe mix irano-slav although why are modern scholars are dividing slovene from iranian while it is the same thing, iranians are slovene ,always germans or french and always wrong, greeting from Croatia

Watching this and remembering my homelands history which at one moment was Bulgarian western neighbor I am often amazed by our first king Tomislav. First defeating Hungarian army on Drava river and then Bulgarian army in Bosnia. Simeon's Bulgaria was an immense military power at the moment.
Bulgaria's only defeat at the time - by Tomislav.
Bulgaria defeated Hungarians, Serbians and especially Byzantines. Simeon could have taken Constantinople but lacked the navy , so he allied with the Arab caliphate in a joint naval attack , but the Byzantines intercepted the plan and rained rich gifts to Arabs to discourage them.
Russians about that: "Under the Byzantine influence, the Serbian Zhupan Zakhariy rebelled against Bulgaria. In 924 Serbia was conquered and annexed to the Bulgarian kingdom, and Zakhari fled to Croatia, proclaimed a kingdom in 925 and a former ally of Byzantium [95]. A Bulgarian corps led by Alogobotur invaded Croatia (926), but was ambushed in the mountains of Bosnia and was defeated [7]. Fearing a Bulgarian response, the first king of Croatia, Tomislav I, agreed to dissolve the alliance with Byzantium and sign a peace based on the status quo [96]. After the conclusion of peace, Pope John X sent his legates Duke John and Bishop Madalbert to Veliki Preslav, who recognized (in the fall of 926) the imperial title of Simeon and the patriarchate of the head of the Bulgarian Church.
So, there was no real war between Criatia and Bulgaria...
he defeated just a small contingent not the main army was a contingent lead by a general. nothing to do with what Simeon lead. Don't be so surprised.
After he ambushed that contingent and destroyed it he knew that what was coming was going to end him so he sued for peace through the pope. Croatia gave up it's alliance with byzantium and there was no need for anything further.
BTW that was only reason why Alogobotur and Marmais were sent to Croatia because Croatia took orders from Byzantium to attack Bulgaria from the rear.
BTW it's just pathetic how the Byzantines kept using Servia and Croatia against Bulgaria. We should have all slavs united against the romans who were the enemy. Servia was always a sell out to other interests. If slavs had united there would be no ottoman conquest and slavs would have dominated the balkans and roman empire would have been subservient.

Worth mentioning that Simeon The Great lead his cavalry himself. Also that his time is remembered in Bulgarian history as "The Golden Age of Bulgarian language and culture"
yes and he lost his beloved horse in that battle. he talks about it in the correspondence with the byzantine. and actually when he appeared later at the gates of constantinople to negotiate with the roman emperor he was riding a white horse that had battle scars. obviously intended to point to the fact that byzantium attacked bulgaria without provocation and that is not forgotten.
Aheloy is a river in southeastern Bulgaria, Burgas district (Aytos, Burgas and Pomorie municipalities), flowing into the Black Sea. Its length is 39.9 km [1].
The Aheloy River is formed by the descent of the rivers Mangarska (left component) and Arnautska (right component) at 166 m above sea level. about 3 km exactly from the village of Beli dol, Pomorie municipality. Both rivers spring from the Aytos Mountain, right from the village of Dryankovets, Aytos Municipality, and the Arnaut River is considered to be the beginning. It flows in a wide valley, near the village of Alexandrovo to the east, and then to the southeast. It flows into the Black Sea to the Aheloy campsite, 1.2 km south of the town of Aheloy.

King Simeon the Great 893-927... For the past 14 centuries or so Bulgaria has been occupying the same core lands in Southeast Europe while Byzantine does not exist anymore. The Ottoman Empire may be considered a successor of Byzantine and modern Greece can be considered a bearer of its cultural heritage but Bulgaria is still called Bulgaria and is still around, unlike the Romans/Byzantines/Ottomans etc...
what ottoman empire has to do with the byzantine?
also which byzantine empire? byzantine empire has totally different phases during its 1000+ centuries. the early period has nothing to do with the late period. not only in lands , but in many things. in the historical sources this difference is obvious. the early byzantine empire was more roman, or better romanized barbarian (i mean in its elite class, the emperors, and the way of life, of course because it was close to the ancient roman empire as a successor and continuer- but the late roman state of the east part has nothing to do with the early. from the elite class and the emperors, to the people and the cultural ressainance. especiall after 1204 we have a totaly different state in character than that of the 6th century for example.

@@cruelty5780 Yes.
You are right.
There is no archeological proof of any Slavic tribes before the settlements of the people who came in the 6th century to that region.
Early Slavic archaeological findings are most often associated with the Przeworsk and Zarubintsy cultures, with evidence ranging from hill forts, ceramic pots, weapons, jewelry and abodes. However, in many areas archaeologists face difficulties in distinguishing Slavic and non-Slavic findings since the early Slavic culture over the subsequent centuries was heavily influenced by the Sarmatian culture from the east and by the various Germanic cultures from the west.
The Proto-Slavic homeland is the area of Slavic settlement in Central and Eastern Europe during the first millennium AD, with its precise location debated by archaeologists, ethnographers and historians. Most scholars consider Polesia the homeland of the Slavs.
The latest attempt of locating the place of Slavic origin used genetics and studied the paternal lineages of all existing modern Slavic populations. It placed the earliest known homeland of Slavs within the area of the middle Dnieper basin, in present-day Ukraine.
This fits perfectly with I2a1b-Dinaric which comes from this exact region and spread during the middle ages.
According to historical records, the Slavic homeland would have been somewhere in Central Europe, possibly along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. The Prague-Penkova-Kolochin complex of cultures of the 6th and the 7th centuries AD is generally accepted to reflect the expansion of Slavic-speakers at the time.
Ancient Roman and Greek historical sources refer to the early Slavic peoples as Veneti and Spori (allegedly from Greek σπείρω "I scatter grain") in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and later in the 5th and 6th centuries also as Antes and Sclaveni. The 6th-century Byzantine historian Jordanes referred to the Slavs in his 551 work Getica, reporting that "although they derive from one nation, now they are known under three names, the Veneti, Antes and Sclaveni" (ab unastirpe exorti, tria nomina ediderunt, id est Veneti, Antes, Sclaveni).[8] Procopius wrote in 545 that "the Sclaveni and the Antae actually had a single name in the remote past; for they were both called Sporoi in olden times".[9] Later, in the 8th century during the Early Middle Ages, early Slavs living on the borders of the Carolingian Empire were referred to as Wends.[10][11]

There is no Slavic population. It took the Romans 280 years to conquer the Thracian kingdoms, as opposed to five years for the Greeks. There is a union of several parts of people having the same language, customs, traditions and blood. Simply and clearly explained. The theory that it was imposed, it was written by our enemies.
71. And Vitalian, moreover, who was commander of the troops in the province of Thrace, being a man of perverse heart, hated Severus the saint of God. Now the emperor Anastasius had appointed Severus patriarch of Antioch in the room of the heretic Flavian, whom he had banished, when the orthodox bishops of the east testified in the favour of the former.
72. And Vitalian, whom we have just mentioned, raised a revolt against the emperor Anastasius, and seized Thrace and Scythia 206 and Mysia, and mustered a numerous army. 73. And the emperor sent against him a general named Hypatius. And when they fought together, he was vanquished by Vitalian and taken prisoner. And on the payment of a large ransom he was set free. 74. But immediately on his return to the emperor, the latter removed him from his command, and appointed in his room another general, named Cyril, of the province of Illyria. 75. And he also gave battle to Vitalian, and there was great slaughter on both sides. Cyril the general retired into the city named Odyssus, and stayed there while Vitalian withdrew into the province of Bulgaria.

And soon we will refound it . We are the strongest in balcans so we can do whatever we want

Guys, the Bulgarian cavalry was composed by heavily armored horseman and also the horses were fully armored. You can see them in the Trayan’s column in Rome. They can't possibly win with only arrows from afar in a close fight with the roman cavalry? Cheers
Trayans column depicts Sarmatian not Bulgarians! from all sources the early bulgarians were fighting like all nomadic people from central asia, with light horse archers, with a small percentage of an armoured elite class. they also employ light/medium infantry.
@@petros311 Not true man, there enough medieval sources that tells the opposite of what you say!
@@petros311 Romans were calling the Old Great Bulgaria only one state! The father of Italian historiography Antonio Ludovico Muratori in his work 'Annali d'Italia' points out that Bulgarians were the oldest and the strongest enemy of the Romans!
@@simeonsimeonov5205 the early bulgarian armies were similar with the nomadic steppe armies mainly with horse archers, that its stated in many sources like in procopius etc. at some point they integrated slav light/medium infantry. apart than some small elite armoured cavalry. i dont know exactly the composition of the armies of krum and symeon but Samuel armies were fighting large guerilla and raid war and avoiding to fight in the open with strong byzantine armies. krum decition to make the skull of emperor nikephoros I, a drinking cup with silver depicts clearly steppe nomad customs.
@@simeonsimeonov5205 not understanding what you meaning when saying old bulgaria only one state! bulgaria was enemy of rome and byzantium from 681ad if i recall corectly, from Heraclius time they were allies. not true the bulgarians were the strongest of the enemies of byzantium. byzantium always had the majority of its army stationed in asia minor due to constant muslim threat, ither from land or from sea. even before the muslim expansion again the majority of the roman armies stationed east to fight the Sassanids! maybe a 60-40% ratio. from the two comanding high military generals the magister militum of the east were superior of his colleage from the west. if you study you would see that the greatest bulgarian victories were always when ambushed the byzantines in narrow roads or otherwise. Samuel armies were inferior of byzantines, thats why he used extensivelly guerilla warfare and raids. he must also had shortage in money that prevent him to gather a large regular army. when Basill II conquered bulgaria he order that the taxes be payed in goods and not in coins as bulgaria had acricultural economy and coins were expensive to find, trading goods were more common.
why is there dothraki in 5:22?
The author has shortly surveyed the history of the widening of the term "Bulgar-Turkic phonological criteria". The last summary of the results of research on the Bulgar-Turkic criteria and their chronological validity was made by Lajos Ligeti in his monograph on Turkic-Hungarian linguistic interrelations (1986). In the paper the author has presented several recent Middle Bulgar-Turkic loans of the Volga Kipchak dialects, following Ligeti's criteria: (1) the prothetic y-; (2) the initial š < si/sï; (3) Ancient Turkic -n ∼ Chuvash -m.

that's pretty much their only real victory in a war against Bulgaria
967-971 the Russian won Bulgaria which is why John Tzimiskes easily occupied Bulgarian lands, cause we were already weaken by Russians. But he didn't dare attack himself . He had to plead the Russian for help.
also Constantine V despite having few successes in battles failed to eliminate Bulgaria after 9 or 11 attempts.
Basil II is their only real victory and lets not forget they lost first half of the war and Basil was defeated. But he came back and used the strongest ever troops against us and bribed a lot of allies around us. That's how he won!

@Physicalyx Hacks lol no they didn’t. Times change and so do the challenges. The Roman Empire is not at all guaranteed to have faired any better
In fact the reason the Byzantine Empire was in this position was due to hundreds of years of Roman mismanagement.
