The origin of the word "woman" is actually to be found in Germany. Back in the olden days the word "man" was referring to humans in general ("Mensch" in German) and was completely genderless. To differentiate between a female and a male human, two words would be used in front of "man", "wer" for males and "wif" for females. The "wer" we can still see in words like "werewolf", meaning "male human wolf" (a female werewolf doesn't really exist, it would have to be called "wifwolf"). The "wif man" (female human) turned into the modern word "woman". Also, the modern word "wife" comes from the old German word "wif" for female human, too.

The word woman is supposed to describe the first one, and "female" the second one. Funnily enough, even when it comes to biology, about 1-2% of people can't be judged based on their chromosomes because of various conditions like mosaicism (they talked about it in the latest episode of SciShow). So to conclude, I'd say that if you have 2X chromosomes, you're most likely a female, not necessarily a woman.

The definition of woman and man aren't as rigid as they were, and are skewed due to words being used in synonymy that shouldn't be. A woman is anyone who identifies with said gender, and associates with stereotypically feminine things. Biological females? Women. A trans woman? Also a woman. A trans woman who hasn't had bottom surgery? Again, a woman. Thinking that a rigid answer to defining "what is a woman?!" or "what is a man?!" doesn't make any sense in today's society, as those questions pertain to *gender*, and not *sex*; seeing as gender is far more abstract in its definition, and isn't as limited.
Using gender and sex synonymously often leads to this misconception of having an "easy definition" for a woman, and is better explained in the video I linked.

When our society has come to the point where people pretend to not know what what a woman is, we are in serious trouble.
But it is complicated since we've way more scientific knowledge at this time and has realized that the simplicity of the 2 sexes really aren't as simple as history has potrayed it. As an example the scientific definition of a female is a person with XX-Chromosomes. But the usual person would consider it based on genitals which doesn't always agree with the chromosomes. There are also sexual differences between people of the same sex like males with male brains and males with female brains.

At that point it's already creating complications since there are people with XY-chromosomes who have a vagina. I would call them women despite them not following all the characteristics of a biological female. So generally people with XX-chromosomes have certain body structures as I mentioned vagina, boobs, a certain brain structure and so on. However not everyone has all biological structures. Specifically brain structure seems to cause effects that makes you feel alienation towards your own body which is called gender dysphoria.
There are also cultural/social ways to view women. That's what we call gender while we usually refer to the biological markers as sex. Hence the term trans-gender and not trans-sex.

In order to define a human, adult female you need to take naturally occuring reproductive organs as your que. Does she have a natural vagina, a naturally occuring uterus, felopian tubes and ovaries? Does she have naturally occuring mammary glands for producing breast milk to feed an infant? Is there abcense of testies and a penis?That's when you're looking at a human female.
The fact that the judge himself was pissed that the letter x has been added to the word woman is pure genius within itself.
