As someone that’s now done multiple lemons races I can say we’ll never be back. The politics involved with lemons simply outweighs whatever fun there is to be had “racing”. The whole 500 dollar car thing has no integrity whatsoever, a true 500 dollar car has no business racing against a c3 corvette with a bmw s52 swapped into it. On top of that being a new team taking it seriously is frowned upon as we received multiple black flags for passing under yellow when there was no yellow(have video of the entire race 🤷♂️) if you want cheap raving that is serious go to Lucky Dog or Champ car. Lemons is a joke
Lemons is a joke, but Chump isn't? In the east, chump is a f'ing demolition derby. Chump's valuation system is just as much a sham. PUY isn't "lemons politics"; flagging is done by the corner workers -- and they're hired by the track. Yes, they can get it wrong sometimes (wrong car number, etc.) If you're getting flagged multiple times, it's probably your fault. ["It's you, home slice!"] Yes, the "$500 car" thing is not as well enforced as some would like. (it's called "BS" judging for a reason.) The spirit of the series is the Class C cars. Having raced "C" for several years now, that's where you want to be -- you're just happy the car hasn't killed anyone, and maybe there's one or two other cars as hopeless to chase around.
This was a fantastic watch and makes me wish that I lived in a bigger city so that I could find a place to get into racing be it auto cross or even carting
Hey I have the exact same car in that same dark green you see (al least on the inside panels), 330k on the clock original engine and trans still drive it (hard) daily, its a soldier. EJ22 and 4EAT's are solid units, nothing fast or fancy.
I’ve had a few Subaru wagon’s. Had several Subaru’s. Still have my WRX swapped ‘96 Legacy. Man the 2.2 in y’alls wagon is so anemic it’s ridiculous. Even the underpowered 2.5 feels so much quicker, and even better with a manual.
The saying goes, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. I've always found it more rewarding to drive at the limit of a slow car than drive a fast car under it's limit.
I've been wanting to do this for years but can't get a team together. Most likely will do the gambler 500 instead. I think that is way more affordable.
Every day Driver: Great job you guys! With both cars.I like that type of racing. I would love to be in that race. And bring some of my favorite cars to race. And be part of you guys team.
I can't believe that LeMons lets the competitors run coolant instead of water. Many wheel to wheel series require water over coolant. Water on the track is no biggie, but coolant is slick and it doesn't just evaporate on its own.
I also don't really get it, he spun yes but I doubt he thought "hm. I wanna spin now", so is there something I don't get or is the black flag really necessary?
I feel like they're being way too restrictive. Try to pass too agressively? Black flag. Try to corner too sharp and spin your own car? Black flag. Get rear-ended by an impatient Miata? Black flag! How is a driver supposed to push themselves if they're not allowed to make a mistake? With the cars they're driving, and the safety gear they're wearing, I think they can afford to loosen up a bit. And how is it a 24-hour endurance race if they don't race through the night?? This is some bullshit.
Thre short rule clarifications: Car without safety (lots of stuff) is valued as $500. Cars get a residual value if requested after each race for allowing improvements or repairs. Everyone races (that passes tech)...bring a car they think is more than $500, you get penalty laps. Finallly (clarification 3.5) Bring the right car...judges don't care but it better be HILARIOUS!.
Michael got it about right. There's no spending limit on safety equipment since it's all required. Brakes and tires are a free for all too. The loophole with the value of the car is you can buy a car for let's say $2k but if you're able to sell a lot of the parts off it when you strip it, the money you make back comes off of your purchase price.
@@phattyhales Don't forget this little tidbit. 1.4: Claiming Race: At the end of the competition, the Organizers-and nobody else, you lazy, better-car-wantin’ bastids-may elect to purchase any vehicle from its owner(s) for $500. In 80 races and counting, we’ve claimed cars precisely twice. Don’t piss us off so much that we raise that to three.
I had always considered chump car over this, just as this seems to be less about racing and more about the spectacle, but either way cheap series are the best
@@nubreed13 that's fair I feel that, idk when I read the rules I took it as way sillier, but the video here definitely shows how fun it can be and even be competitive
what you dont see beyond that $500 limit for the cost of a car..is the THOUSANDS it costs to actually run..prep the car..safety gear...etc. Id love to do this, but its a lot more expensive than it appears.
The Boxster was a personal car that was purchased 16 years prior so we asked the judges to assess value based on market and condition. Which was ROUGH...
aww man. Too bad about the 318. I could have disabled EWS for you via instruction over the phone...then the tumbler can just be bypassed after by splicing 2 wires and touching 2 more together
How did you find a Boxster for $500? Maybe a couple cans of Flexseal for next year. ;) Great video, hopefully will get a chance to race at LeMons next year.
In racing, we call this "sandbagging"...I mean its a Boxster, of course its going to outperform a Mazda 3 or a Dodge Dart covered in astroturf. Fun to watch none the less.
What the hell? A penalty for spinning out? If I heard right, the crew cleaned up oil with kitty litter or whatever oil absorbing substance and someone slips on it, the driver gets a penalty? Seems a little bs to me
For your first race if you build your own car and need all of the racing gear? Expect about 5000$ cheapest way to race? Get your own racing gear and do an arrive and drive(most teams charge between 500-800$) Check the LeMons forum for teams looking for drivers. Cheapest way to have your own LeMons car? Buy one that has already raced. Rather than spend 3500$ building a car, go to the forum and buy one that has already passed tech for 1500ish$

What great content!! very much enjoyed watching that
"How can someone think that a 500$ is a good race car?" then showing up in a 500$ Porsche - awesome ;-)
How did the automatic make it to the end of the race???
Oh wow this is Ridge Motorsport park! I didnt know they held lemons races there..
Awesome guys! I so need to take a shot at lemons racing.
Pimply faced teenage voice Paul at 5:57, haha
Wish we had fun like this in Australia! Hardly any tracks left now. Everything is banned.
I can't believe that LeMons lets the competitors run coolant instead of water. Many wheel to wheel series require water over coolant. Water on the track is no biggie, but coolant is slick and it doesn't just evaporate on its own.
LeMons actually limits us to water only. There was coolant residue that wasn't fully flushed out of the engine.
My old 96 Legacy would of been perfect for this. It had the 2.5l turbo in it, too bad it overheated like a Subaru would.
Greetings from Team Sawzda!
Dam bro, they giving you a hard time re the kitty litter spin.
TurgBurglar
Yea that marshal was a chump
I also don't really get it, he spun yes but I doubt he thought "hm. I wanna spin now", so is there something I don't get or is the black flag really necessary?
oh god that 944... poor thing hahahahaha as a 924S owner I find it absolutely hilarious hahahaha well done!
Nobody else said it exactly this way on this comment thread, so let me be the first..."$500 my ass!!!" Still, great fun all around. :-)
Hey uhh shut
"WHY U RUIN CLASSIC!?"
Isn't this race full of cars that are like $500, because there are definitely cars that are significantly more than that out there...
@@michaelkrenzer3296 can confirm the lada niva was budget exempt since nobody can win in a 50hp lada.
$500 MY ASS!
I had always considered chump car over this, just as this seems to be less about racing and more about the spectacle, but either way cheap series are the best
The racing is legitimate but with the focus on getting as much as you can from the worst car you can find.
@@nubreed13 that's fair I feel that, idk when I read the rules I took it as way sillier, but the video here definitely shows how fun it can be and even be competitive
Wicked cool. Question is how did you find a $500 boxster?
what you dont see beyond that $500 limit for the cost of a car..is the THOUSANDS it costs to actually run..prep the car..safety gear...etc. Id love to do this, but its a lot more expensive than it appears.
Yep, between 3000-5000 to build a car. As low as 2000$ if you can bend tubing and weld the cage in yourself.
Great video from a track I've driven many times.
Part IV is missing in my region... 👀
How much did the Boxster cost pre-strip cost recovery/credit?
Great video guys, seriously good stuff
The Boxster was a personal car that was purchased 16 years prior so we asked the judges to assess value based on market and condition. Which was ROUGH...
aww man. Too bad about the 318. I could have disabled EWS for you via instruction over the phone...then the tumbler can just be bypassed after by splicing 2 wires and touching 2 more together
The UK needs this.
great video! loved it.
How did you find a Boxster for $500? Maybe a couple cans of Flexseal for next year. ;) Great video, hopefully will get a chance to race at LeMons next year.
Great work as always, guys. I've got to avoid Craigslist for a while or my wife will kill me.
Who hasn't wanted to race? Well for car guys. Dang, that was fun
In racing, we call this "sandbagging"...I mean its a Boxster, of course its going to outperform a Mazda 3 or a Dodge Dart covered in astroturf. Fun to watch none the less.
My new goal is to run this race and the Gambler 500 in the same year with the same car. Brb, gonna go surf the web for $500 G-Wagons.
Properly equipped Lemons cars can run for years on end in the series, but perhaps not if you gambler it...
What track is this? It’s beautiful.
The ridge, in Washington state.
What the hell? A penalty for spinning out? If I heard right, the crew cleaned up oil with kitty litter or whatever oil absorbing substance and someone slips on it, the driver gets a penalty? Seems a little bs to me
hopefully in the future would love to join in the ranks of this race.
how much money do you realistically need to have to get into lemons?
For your first race if you build your own car and need all of the racing gear? Expect about 5000$ cheapest way to race? Get your own racing gear and do an arrive and drive(most teams charge between 500-800$) Check the LeMons forum for teams looking for drivers. Cheapest way to have your own LeMons car? Buy one that has already raced. Rather than spend 3500$ building a car, go to the forum and buy one that has already passed tech for 1500ish$
Massive enjoyed this, great film.
Good lord gracious, this is really cool.
I cant wait till the day we see someone on the grid at LaSarthe who started their racing carrer in Lemons.
When is this going to come to the UK?
