In Australian Lemons we're allowed $999 Australian, which is about $700 US. Our team has a $600 car with a $100 motor and a $100 gearbox swapped into it. The actual cost of racing that $800 pile is why I'm broke.

No, you can't. Not only would it not pass safety inspection, but both the race and the rental agency wouldn't allow it. Also, any insurance on the rental car does not apply on race tracks.
back in the 1960's, ''people' (staying generic to protect the not so innocent) would rent Hertz Shelby Mustangs (all of them are green, btw)... on a Friday. Yank the motor, dump them into their hot rods, race all weekend, and Sunday night reinstall the engines back into the rental chassis. Buyer beware if you see an all original Hertz Shelby Mustang come up in Hemmings!! :)
iirc back in the Altamont days someone actually did this; 07? maybe 08? they rented some generic car like a ford escort, got ALL the insurances; a bolt-in cage kit(illegal these days in lemons iirc) and basically beat the crap out of it.
4:20 please never top pushing this narrative. So what happened to the contest rule where if there was any heartburn about what a car cost they had to sign over the title at the end for $500?
The judges only ever used that rule twice. Once because the team BEGGED them to take the car, the other because the team tried extra hard to cheat (to the point of putting artificially rusted engine parts over the racing bits).
@@jaymorrison2419 back in...2012? i wanna say, Jay claimed a Motor from a Team that was basically full of Pratt & Miller guys they had an old 80's camaro with a 600hp "built" engine. it was funny watching them reel when the then-BS Judges Murilee and his cousin told'em to yank the valve covers for a gander.
That rule is still applied in cases of egregious violations of the rules (or if the team asks for it to happen), but generally speaking the narrative is absolutely correct; no one cares because it's about having fun rather than a serious race event.
That is true, but it is WAY more affordable than other "entry" racing series. It would be nice if the organizers were a little more open about the cost of all the safety equipment. This is an idea that i think really should be existing in the UK. Seems like everyone has a dirt cheap form of racing these days but us, look at Finland with folkrace for example. But how do these guys get around things like track rental costs for the day? As that's always been the problem over here with trying to get guys off the cheap oval tracks in budget formulas where they pay maybe £20 - 40 in for 2 heats and a final in race entry fees, in comparison to racing on a proper circuit, where you can pay anything from £240 - £340 for Quali and 2 races.
As a guy who ran 25 Lemons races, with a win , a bunch of top 3's - and we always finished, with a True 500 buck car - we knew how to drive and make it last!. But we quit running the series when it became obvious that car cost was really just a wink wink deal. back in the old days - racers voted and the biggest cheater / Biggest dick on the track, they were pulled off the track on day 2, and their car was destroyed to a bunch of cheering racers. . That provided some incentive for guys to not put high dollar parts in their cars. once that went away - its all about the show - and who you know. we now run Formula V - significantly cheaper - but more important - a level playing field!
9:41 There's a book about the incident he's talking about called Alone at Dawn. Highly recommend it. Glad to see these guys in the car community. Drone footage: ua-cam.com/video/3oKMjTqdTYo/v-deo.html
I've raced Lemons multiple times as well as ChampCar, and I think ChampCar is a better option. ChampCar does not pretend to have cheap cars like Lemons, but believe me there are Lemons teams spending LOTS of money to make their cars fast, and they are trying to win. Judges are not giving these guy penalty laps that are regulars at their events, they will hammer the first-time lemons racers. I would say this, Lemons is expensive! if you want to simply go "racing" on a road course, then open track events are they way to do it, they let you run regular street cars so no expensive rollcages, etc. And if you have a couple buddies come out and bring their cars too, it is a good fun time.
Running 500 dollar cars don't really exist here anymore... 1000 or 1500 would be a more realistic number. When scrap prices were up, the cheap runners all got scrapped.
Bought a low mileage 93 Celica last month for $450. Only thing wrong with it is a blown clutch and a couple small dents. Clutch kit is under $100 and don't care about the dents since I bought it to set up as a 4 cyl circle track car. They're out there, you just have to look.
Not that it would be good on a race track, but I bought a 97 4x4 Blazer a few weeks ago for $400. Like the man said, you won't find them on Craigslist. You have to sniff around and keep your ear to the ground.
$1500 you kidding me? Most of the cars on the west coast are $5k budget not including safety. Most winning cars have huge fuel cells. That’s $2k right there
@@LoneWolfZ I does make the brain cells spark with ideas... The price limit seems too low though. $500 is salvage car material. $3k and you hit a used car lot and find something in the back anyplace.
@@WALTERBROADDUS Built four so far...two were below $500 (Saturn SL2 & Suzuki Esteem) and the third was $40 over the limit (1947 Plymouth Sedan) after we sold off the side glass and interior...fourth did not not keep track because we knew they would not be asked (about $1200, Dustbuster minivan). It actually is easy when you are starting out but gets exponentially more difficult as you either chase IoE's or class wins.
Hot Rod is part of motortrend, right? How is it that their videos look like they are from 2011? Even Liebermann looks like a run down 2011 version of himself
I have a 96 corolla I bought for $1800 with 176k miles on it. She's at 352k miles at the moment and definitely looks the part. She isn't very fast but damn is she reliable. I bet I could sell it to my gf and then buy it back for $400 and put $100 in suspension parts because in her current state she is just dangerous to drive. Then I could run the lemons
You need suspension parts? I've been driving a Mercury Sable with a broken rear spring for months. Lol. Last one broke, and I drove THAT for months like that. Then, a big debate at the mechanic's about replacing ONE spring. Difference: 450.00. It'll sit lopsided. OK, then. Humor me. If it's lopsided, you win... I won that round. Got it 2 years before the other one broke. Haha.
most of the time it's just really how the race organizing works out. most of the lemons staff want some chill time, a great number of tracks will either not run at night(not prepped for it, improper lighting, etc,.) and/or keeping the track staffed overnight is ridiculously expensive. It also gives most teams a chance to weld/duct tape/wrench their crap can back into moving under it's own power on sunday.
What's with the Mustangs? The junker is worth more than $500 on account of its classic status and the Foxbody...well, that's got so much work put into it that it isn't even a question.
I've been interested in LeMons for years, and watching this got the fire stoked again, I have a 97 Grand Prix that I got for free and could easily get shipshape for less than $500...so I went to the website for LeMons and checked out the rules and entry fee. Guys, it costs $1420 USD ($1380 plus $60 for some random reason) plus bribes to get one race at Lemons. One thousand. Four hundred. And twenty US dollars. Holy. Shit. That's just the entry fee, you still need to come up with the cash to safety up you and the car. That's utterly insane and in no way shape or form should they be allowed to call this a cheap, everymans race series. That's a shitload of cash. I can get a day of racing at my local drag strip for $25 and the safety rules are based on how fast your car is, which means any of these LeMons beaters would be fine with a battery hold down. What a crock
R W , not everyone can afford to go racing. No need to get bent out of shape. People that can do, and people that can’t don’t, no big deal. For what it is, it’s pretty cost effective.
Track rental is much more for road racing over drag, emergency services and car recovery cost more, more people needed for marshaling and management, etc. $1,420 is one set of larger race tires, to add a bit of perspective.
@6:04 we still have bottles of HITE! in the RV. Never put Rain-X on the inside. We've made that horrible mistake before. "Rag On A Stick" -- we have several.

I like how they say it was made to get people in the racing but they are charging more than any serious racing organizations for the weekend of racing. This is made to grab money from people that don’t know anything about racing or driving but it makes them feel good that they are “racing” . Plus 0 cars are close to 500$ .

Where is this?
I've raced Lemons multiple times as well as ChampCar, and I think ChampCar is a better option.
ChampCar does not pretend to have cheap cars like Lemons, but believe me there are Lemons teams spending LOTS of money to make their cars fast, and they are trying to win. Judges are not giving these guy penalty laps that are regulars at their events, they will hammer the first-time lemons racers.
I would say this, Lemons is expensive! if you want to simply go "racing" on a road course, then open track events are they way to do it,
they let you run regular street cars so no expensive rollcages, etc. And if you have a couple buddies come out and bring their cars too, it is a good fun time.
Man I want to do this !!
Running 500 dollar cars don't really exist here anymore... 1000 or 1500 would be a more realistic number. When scrap prices were up, the cheap runners all got scrapped.
Not really about being a 500 car...it is about making it look like a 500 car and making them believe it only cost 500.
That’s $2k right there
My car cost 500€ and it works perfectly fine lol
$500 limit. Brings a car with a racing seat that costs more than $500 and is brand new. Yeah.
Lone Wolf safety equipment does not count towards the $500. And what car was new?
@@racerfink the mustang bucket, not the car. Don't get yer undies bunched. The rules obviously are "flexible".
@@LoneWolfZ I does make the brain cells spark with ideas... The price limit seems too low though. $500 is salvage car material. $3k and you hit a used car lot and find something in the back anyplace.
@@WALTERBROADDUS A complete tube chassis is safety equipment, right!?
@@WALTERBROADDUS Built four so far...two were below $500 (Saturn SL2 & Suzuki Esteem) and the third was $40 over the limit (1947 Plymouth Sedan) after we sold off the side glass and interior...fourth did not not keep track because we knew they would not be asked (about $1200, Dustbuster minivan). It actually is easy when you are starting out but gets exponentially more difficult as you either chase IoE's or class wins.
John "Chappy" Chapman will never die in my heart.

Who was that gorgeous driver with the braid. O.O

~"I know right ;)"
Hot Rod is part of motortrend, right?
How is it that their videos look like they are from 2011? Even Liebermann looks like a run down 2011 version of himself
I have a 96 corolla I bought for $1800 with 176k miles on it. She's at 352k miles at the moment and definitely looks the part. She isn't very fast but damn is she reliable. I bet I could sell it to my gf and then buy it back for $400 and put $100 in suspension parts because in her current state she is just dangerous to drive. Then I could run the lemons
Selling and buying back wouldn't help.
Have a good theme. Have fun. Make it safe. Have fun. And you are good.
Haha.
Also gotta put specified roll bars, cutoff switch, tow hooks/loops, steering lockout removed, racing harness, et cetera.
The track version of the gambler 500
Why did 10 minutes of a great video have to be bootlicking?
You guys really should be ashamed of the quality on this one. It looks, and sounds worse than the original episodes of jackass.
You're videos are so much better done. It's refreshing to see a channel like yours, full of quality content that isn't horribly edited.
@@shimes424 Thank you! I really appreciate that sentiment.
I enjoy finding my teams car in lemons videos
why would it not be a proper 24 hour race?! isnt that the point?! the video nitro circus put up recently was a 24hr event.
Depends on who's hosting the event some do the 24 hours some don't
most of the time it's just really how the race organizing works out. most of the lemons staff want some chill time, a great number of tracks will either not run at night(not prepped for it, improper lighting, etc,.) and/or keeping the track staffed overnight is ridiculously expensive. It also gives most teams a chance to weld/duct tape/wrench their crap can back into moving under it's own power on sunday.
What's with the Mustangs? The junker is worth more than $500 on account of its classic status and the Foxbody...well, that's got so much work put into it that it isn't even a question.
That rustang has more that $500 worth of tires on it.
TheRPGentleman safety items do not count towards the $500. It’s what you bought the car for BEFORE turning it into a racecar.
Per-minute this is a lot cheaper...
$1,420 is one set of larger race tires, to add a bit of perspective.
why do you never see Crown Vics? Seems like the perfect car for this.
NVM theres literally a Crown Vic right now.
Because they had the SAME problem as the damned Pinto.
NO. Big fire hazard.
LMAO I LOVE THE SARCASMS IN THAT EVENT. WANNA BE THERE SO BAD. MUST BE A FUN EVENT
cajun jihads lmfao! x'D
FANTASTIC Idea! Bring it to the Nürburgring and I'm in!
Could Germans even do this? Do you have old cars lying about?
I have a hard time believing some of these cars are worth $500.

Not familiar with the rules, are you?

Smoke a stogie with an open-faced helmet
Vin wiki has an amazing video on all this
@6:04 we still have bottles of HITE! in the RV.
Never put Rain-X on the inside. We've made that horrible mistake before. "Rag On A Stick" -- we have several.
She can't be from fox and friends.. She's not blond.
well..she was able to actually complete a coherent sentence so she's definitely not from CNN
CNN is kinda hard to understand if you're a Trumper.
All those pesky facts.
24 hours of LEMONS. That would be like experiencing very tart tartes. For 24 hours. I’ll bet your teeth would be very sensitive after a long acid exposure?
From LEMONS.
I like how they say it was made to get people in the racing but they are charging more than any serious racing organizations for the weekend of racing. This is made to grab money from people that don’t know anything about racing or driving but it makes them feel good that they are “racing” . Plus 0 cars are close to 500$ .
I just realized it said 24 hours of lemons and not LeMans.
200k Miles, the only time cars are clocked upwards.
this looks super fun
