    Amazing design and construction. Great setup for your living quarters and working area. When naming the boat, I hope you include some type of memory of Maverick and Goose who were your original crew. They were a big part of your new career.

      An electric = solar/ generator powered boat has to navigate TOTALLY different than any sail yacht: hop between blue over windy (cloudy) patches, best seasons almost opposite. Pre-monsoon is most sunny, as are mornings. Ocean currents equally important. Much less chop when out of wind.

    Extremely nice boat and happy for you. You finally get the boat you have always wanted.

    The lagoon bulkheads aren't failing through rot. They are undersized and failing through buckling, or failing because they are not tabbed in properly i.e. not attached to the boat. The plywood is less prone to compression failure than the foam as it is denser, hence why it is heavier.

    • @jackblah5842
      @jackblah5842 Рік тому

      He said Lagoon-wood-rot so many times. Nothing wrong with a well designed/maintained wooden boat in fact the builder corrected him 12:00 saying rot had nothing to do with it.

  • @hecdc7703
    @hecdc7703 Рік тому +10

    Beautiful rig! You can see the signs of a solid construction with all the bulkheads, stringers and crossmembers. Your interior layout is very practical and comfortable. Good planning. That cat is going to be awesome. Thank you for sharing this video with us.

  • @johnmikel5934
    @johnmikel5934 Рік тому +9

    Get plenty of spare parts! Beautiful construction design so far. Gotta love that it is wood free, no rot in the future. High density foam means it floats, even in pieces, integral solid one piece hull, a good thing out on the open ocean. Great forestay mounting. Nice electric power system and capacity. Great choice for a long lasting yacht. Best of the best with the cat!

    • @armslength2618
      @armslength2618 Рік тому +1

      'High density foam' and 'solid hull' are oxymorons. The whole purpose of foam (or balsa end-grain mats) is to provide a low-density light weight core inside of a bonded sandwich with two outside panels of fiberglas or marine 1/4 inch plywood, etc. The foam or balsa transmits geometric forces through itself from one shell to the other one, with the second shell strong in tension. The entire sandwich is almost as strong as solid fiberglass but much lighter, essential for cats.
      Solid hulls are for monohull displacement boats, where resistance to grounding or collision damage is more important than lighter weight.

    • @jcheck6
      @jcheck6 Рік тому

      @@armslength2618 So what is your consensus, is this the best construction method for today's Cats? I keep reading about the bulkhead failures on Parley's channel.

    • @armslength2618
      @armslength2618 Рік тому

      @@jcheck6 The 'best' method is application of the optimal material and construction techniques to any particular component. One size does not fit all. If bulkheads are failing, perhaps a better material and stouter construction at that place is appropriate.
      I could build a cat out of 1/2 inch EH26 grade carbon steel, but it might end up with about an inch of freeboard due to the weight. Same as an airplane. You could build it so heavy that it could never get off the ground. But if you use a good steel for the wing box and carbon fiber most other places, you would have something both strong and airworthy. And possibly prohibitively expensive.
      A good start to study from is the construction technique of the Gunboat 68. Then figure out how to build it out of balsa/E-glass sandwich and a bit of steel and/or marine fir plywood to bring down the cost at the expense of a bit of extra weight.

    A couple things not mentioned on your tour 1, how much fuel will your Gen system carry, 2 Witch Fuel will you go with for this system. 3, Of course you will be getting a water maker what brand are you looking at? and how much storage are planning for that 200 300 gal.?? also what type tanks will you be using fiberglass or stainless? Love the size and layout looks like a great cruiser. The wife loved the 3 person shower idea, she said a must for saving water what ever that means???????

Vicariously or not, it's very real for me and others too. The experience, the emotions...the everything. So happy for you, and all of us, to sail the high seas all around the world. The maiden voyage should be epic. I guess the next big thing is a name for her. Since she's cutting edge and electric, a name that is modern and relevant might be fitting.

    Love the living space on a cat, but the sleeping quarters are just so cramped even at 52 ft. As you get older the prospect of changing the bed linen when you can't walk around the bed is off putting. Also, I wonder if well ever see a motor only version with two generators for redundancy and lots of solar on the roof and lots of fuel storage. I could be tempted by that! Great video as always.

    Really interesting to see the increasing momentum in electric propulsion and hats off to the early adopters. When you do the maths however on the solar panels - 4.8kW of panels even, if they were producing 100% output, would take 44 hours to charge the 210kWhr battery bank. Fantastic if you are in an environment where you only occasionally using your motors. Have a look at Bobby's recent Bahama's video and you see the engines got quite a work out.

    • @armslength2618
      @armslength2618 Рік тому

      210kWhr is about 20 liters, or one standard jerry-can of diesel. About 18 bucks. If you're running a million-dollar boat, 44 hours is worth a lot more than 18 bucks. Go diesel.
