Imagine a full size version built around the GAU-8 30 mm cannon with bombs and rockets carried as internal stores inside the thick wings. Fast, quiet and deadly. Have to call it Dorgan.

I'm more than eager to build a maned scaled down Ho-229, first as a RC testing bed, and later on with cockpit for a pilot lying on its chest like the some of the previous flying wings of the Horten Bros.
If I had the investors... I'd love to certificate it to start production of a carbon fiber version.
There's something in this plane that strikes us all, and I feel the need to honor this pioneers with a financially succesful and viable finished product that everyone can fly. I might start a crowdfunding site to get the prototype running 😉
I can't imagine how difficult it would be to fly that ship!
Hello f4udhorn! To my information it was no problem to fly the original and or the RC model. Also the US Bomber B2 is constructed similar but larger.

The U.S flew prototypes during and for years after WW-2, but otherwise you are correct flying wing aircraft did not enter service with the military until four decades later.
When Germany was prohibited from building aircraft after WW 1 they turned to gliding and the flying wing was one of the designs the Hortens used in the early 30's . See the Horten IV - VIII . Those brothers were crazy.

I find it interesting that the plane lifts off main gear first, and then the nose wheel. It has to be a real pain to land.
Nothing is perfect Dan, it is after all a scaled down version of a plane being still developed.

I'd guess that this alone wouldn't be a big problem by itself, but the design (and I assume the model also) has low wing loading and low drag, meaning it has low stall speed and is a bitch to slow down in straight-ish line. Not bad things in the air, not fun when landing.
I'd love to know how well it can glide?

You find information in "Warplanes of the third Reich" byWilliam Green, Manufacturer of this Horta was a companycalled Gotha.

Fred I want to thank you I was actually able to find a copy of it here in the United States.. I'm a license to FAA aircraft mechanic.
Right now I'm in the avionics world. The German people will way ahead of everyone with their technology during world war II.
Let me tell you something they came very close to winning the war.. then the United States entered the war that was one of the happiest days for Winston Churchill.. it's a shame that Germany was being run by a madman at that time who thought it was okay to do away with other races that he felt fit ..here in the United States were back to getting some of that with our president and his hate...

Wow what a build. Early version of stealth indeed. I wonder how it was with radar.
I find no record of Radar testing. During a flight a maximum speed of 497 mph and maximum hight of 52500 ft was acheived.

In the usa the skunk works built a full scale replica and radar tested it. Very very small cross section from the fuel tanks and cockpit parts. The first stealth plane.
@@Anmeteor9663 It was not stealth. It was not small- it was just smaller than that of a Messerschmitt _Me 109._
The first stealth bomber was the De Haviland Mosquito. It had a negligible radar image because of it's wooden construction. They messed it up a bit when they stuck guns and things on it as the original design was unarmed and could fly higher and faster than anything available at the time.
Pretty cool plane but how old is this footage? Looks like it was recorded on an old vhs recorder.

Always asked for myself when i saw him: How do he will land? He does'nt have a Tail, so he cannot rotate without changing a horisontal angle. Well, look's like he is so heavy, that he don't need to do this trick on War Thunder (Yea, i talking about WT's Horten), anyways - Thanks for "answer" :D
Actually, the horten has yaw control with a set of airbreaks on the tips of the wings.

Wondered how practical that aircraft would have been in service.
Flying wing designs have very limited cg range. Fore-and-aft balance is touchy. And without a vertical stabilizer directional control is iffy. Especially if one engine flames out.
Computer control is almost mandatory for flying wings. Their advantages include high manoeuvrability, low drag and small cross section for an attacker. The Horten brothers were really ahead of their time, but they produced some beautiful designs, even for their early flying wings.
@@RWBHere The engineers who worked on the YB-49 fixed the stability problems with an electromechanical gyro box that controlled the aircraft. The pilot controls were read as roll rate commands to the gyro system that operated the control surfaces. It was an analog electromechanical PID system and was one of if not the first fly by wire systems.
Wrong, the design is in the wing. Horten brothers originally designed this flying wing as a glider. Read the history on it. Stability wasn't an issue. You can find rc gliders based on this design even today.

2002 when I recorded this, it was a Giant model in Europe Jimmy.

By the way, I am flying a Cmelak crop duster with a Moki since 1998. Then, it was the largest in Ireland!!! To day it is being overtaken by !/2 Scale models...

@@ScaleJetFred Good afternoon; I'm an Englishman, and am thus proud of our engineering prowess and heritage .. however, having seen how rapidly, astonishingly advanced German aircraft designs were being developed in 1945, I must feel relief that the war ended in that year; had it continued into 1946, I admit to an uncomfortable feeling that matters might have begun to swing back in Germany's favour. I realise that other matters might have come into play had that happened, (Berlin as opposed to Hiroshima might have been the first nuclear victim, for instance), but .. who can say ? .. I'm interested only as one interested in the engineering. Had the war continued, I'd say that we'd have seen British Vampires fighting ME-262 and Horton aircraft - (the centrifugal 'Goblin' jet engine against Jumo-004 axial jets, etc.) I have no idea how THAT might have worked out ! .. (comments most welcome .. please discuss; I'll bookmark this & check back in a month or so.) .. Regards, Mr.Swann, Devon, England.

Stop calling it a " Stealth " fighter. Tests conducted on an all wooden replica showed it had 80% of the radar signature of a BF 109. The actual aircraft, with it's steel frame and metal engine cowlings would have had a larger signature. The stealth myth should die. Beautiful model.
