    There are film courses that study just this movie. Nothing has been made like it before or since. Surrealism is not a strong enough word to describe it. No one really ever has.

    The absolute brilliance [and audacity for the time] of this few minutes of cinema will never be replicated again. Sorry, I'm old, I've been watching films for sixty plus years now and no one has come even close to just how good this film comedy is. I'll admit Blazing Saddles and Life of Brian are up there, for me personally, I keep coming back to the Brothers.

    I've always found this scene the most hilarious comment about the stupid and naïve eagerness for war. The very first time I saw "Duck Soup", I was 8, too young to grasp this idea. But I laughed out loud all the way through the movie. I still do. But I especially love this scene! 🤣

    Somehow, it's Zeppo who steals this scene for me. He's leading the rally with the other brothers, but while they're actively trying to be goofy, he's more like "What? Isn't this how everyone goes to war?" LOL. One of the few times his shtick worked perfectly.

    • @tpowell453
      @tpowell453 8 років тому +8

      Don't see it. At all. He's lost, as usual, among the stars.

    • @thatguyoverthere11
      @thatguyoverthere11 8 років тому +16

      Don't get me wrong, there's a reason audiences never responded to him the same way, and that's probably how he should be remembered. But there were times they knew what they were doing with him. Look at 0:49 and tell me he's not the only one you could possibly buy thinking this is dead serious.

    • @willemverheij3412
      @willemverheij3412 7 років тому +21

      I really like how this is pretty much the best moment that involves all four of the marx brothers. Zeppo rarely gets to join in on the fun. He always works well to me, I just wish he was given more material in the movies.
      He was able to play the roles of the others by the way, in fact he apparently got more laughs as captain spaulding than Groucho when Groucho was sick, which urged Groucho to get back on stage as fast as he could.
      There is actually a scene in the dark in the movie of animal crackers where it is Zeppo who plays Groucho.

    • @TheaterPup

    I can't even imagine how this was directed. Possibly the brothers had their concept of the sequence and (with the exception of the helmet xylo scene, which took more precision), Groucho just called out, "Copy us: after we do something, then you do it! Now wave your arms around! Now freeze while we do a silly singing thing, then do some fake square dancing stuff with anyone nearby!. Now run around all over the place!" 2:45-2:50 almost seems like the camera person was caught off guard. All around good stuff!

      As a performer, you're right, he didn't really fit in. Performing wasn't really something he was interested in, but rather something he was kind of forced into. But while Groucho may have made that remark, he was only referring to what Zeppo brought (or didn't bring) to the act. Off camera, the other brothers, and even Jack Benny all agreed that he was the funniest of the bunch, with a wit that could rival Groucho's. He also had the ability to imitate anyone of the brothers if one got sick during a show - which happened with Groucho on at least one occasion.
