I remember when we watched this movie in class a few years ago. It was pretty awkward, cause no one else seemed very amused, but during this scene I couldn't contain my laughter even if I tried. This was the case during a lot of scenes actually... Something about the humor in this movie just gets me.
It goes without saying that Chico and Harpo were comic geniuses, but Edgar Kennedy, caught in the middle here, was a brilliant comic in his own right, having worked with other comedians from Laurel and Hardy, to Lupe Velez, to W.C. Fields, to the Marx Brothers, to Buster Keaton, to Shemp Howard, to Fatty Arbuckle to Wheeler and Woolsey. Kennedy also had a very long running series of comedy shorts with himself in the starring role. Kennedy's so underrated and deserves to be better known by the general public.
No wonder I was different during childhood, with my Dad recording this and lots of 'Laurel and Hardy'. I couldn't get enough of this one and probably memorized most of the scenes. Harpo's reaction when he gets his pants full of lemonade is beyond price.
What a great routine ! They had it down pat. I remember times when my father would wake me up in the middle of the night for a Marx Bros movie. We both enjoyed them then, and they haven't lost their magic with me even now.
Edgar Kennedy was a wonderful comedian. He was always great as the vexed Irish Cop. "Kennedy's your Man"! He had his own series of movie shorts. Always at wits end.
Yes! I love the stories about Woollcott and the Algonquin circle. And the story about how Harpo's wife got him to marry her by stalking him relentlessly, it's like a funny chase movie. And so much more...
@@dontaylor7315 also the parts where he got arrested in Russia because his suitcase was filled with gag guns and knives & when he chased the girls with a croquet mallet like a madman 😂😂 those were my favourite parts 😂 I was laughing my head off and saying “oh Harpo, you loveable idiot!” 😂😂
@@infjgirl3850 Hey thanks for bringing up those parts I seem to have forgotten; just goes to show I ought to revisit the book, it's evidently been long enough that reading it again will be like a fresh experience. One thing I think I do recall is that Harpo seems to have thoroughly enjoyed Alexander Woollcott, a personality detested by many including Harold Ross, James Thurber and others; I think even Dorothy Parker eventually couldn't stand him. My impression is that Woollcott's insensitive pranks were among the reasons he was disliked but Harpo just regarded them as challenges to outprank the prankster. Another aspect people couldn't tolerate was Woollcott's arrogance and self-importance but I think Harpo was so unimpressed he wasn't even offended.
I want to know who started the "hat gimmick". I've seen this done by Laurel and Hardy as well as the Three Stooges. Is this one of those things where nobody has a clear idea of it or too many take credit for it?
Oh yeah, of all the scenes in Duck Soup the dueling vendors was my favorite - peanut vendors Chico & Harpo really drove lemonade vendor Edgar Kennedy crazy - the hat-passing sequence made laugh until tears streamed down my cheeks, and I nearly wet myself when things culminated with Harpo setting Edgar’s hat on fire in their peanut roaster… screamingly funny zaniness!
Edgar Kennedy who plays the lemonade vendor appeared in quite a few laurel and hardy films. Laurel and hardy and the Marx brothers are my favorite comedy teams!!
Harpo reminds me so much of Dopey from Snow White & the 7 Dwarves. Not only was he the silent one, he also did so many silly things, like this scene right here. You outta see the part where Harpo dunks his feet into the lemonade, which this clip left out.
Ah, the great character actor Edgar Kennedy, who also appeared in early Our Gang comedies and tons of other films, in between Leonard (Chico) and Arthur (Harpo) Marx in a very well rehearsed old vaudeville routine the Marx Brohters perfected on Broadway.
Yes they did, it was only seconds later when the peanut stand was tipped over. Then Harpo took off his boots and swished his feet in the lemonade, to the dismay of the waiting customers.
It was a great thing that they didn't have all of this stuff in one go but actually came back to this scene! The time in between makes a great effect - oh no they're still gonna go at it, poor Edgar Kennedy
How does Harpo manage to be the most loveable Marx, whilst also being biggest shit disturber of the trio? I guess that's what happens when you're mama's favorite.
Nobody did a slow burn better than Edgar Kennedy, who was so good at it that he made a career out of it and was affectionately nicknamed "Slow Burn" by the industry.
the Marx Brothers are the closest thing to Python humour I've ever seen come out of American cinema, and to be completely honest, they do it a little better.
Michael here: UH-OH!! At 2:31, The angered Lemonade Vendor does an Al Bundy on Harpo Marx when the angry lemonade vendor places that horn down Harpo's pants and honks it and WE KNOW IT!! O-M-GOODNESS!!!!
obimokenobi It's definitely Edgar Kennedy. He did play the cop in both Little Rascals(Our Gang) and Laurel and Hardy comedies which were produced by Hal Roach. He nearly always played a cop. He's actually one of the original Keystone Kops. Charles A. Bachman also played a lot of cops in Roach movies and even kind of looked like Kennedy at times so I can see where you made the mistake.

This is a post-Code film and it's reasonably clean. There is the once scene where Harpo seems to have seduced a woman, but he actually up in bed with a horse so I guess that passed the censors!
Who is the blonde women who played the role of the lemonade vendor's wife toward the end of the movie? She is the woman who Harpo sees in the window while is riding through town on his horse, then he goes into her room and hides in the bathtub when the vendor comes home. I looked on IMDB but can't find a cast listing for her.
I really love Harpo. He is such loveable prankster and troll.
Edgar Kennedy is brilliant in this - his reactions really make it.
He really did sell their antics as the straight man slowly going mental over their antics.
Vendor- "I'll teach you to kick me!"
Chico- "You don't have to teach me, I know how!" *kicks*

The 2 Funniest Comedies of All Time ( For me ) .... Black and White "Duck Soup" .... Colour " Love and Death "!
to think it flopped on first release and is now considered to be their best and it is I love how Harpo gets the best of Edgar Kennedy in this scene.
It's almost 90+ years old and this is still pretty damn funny.
Pretty damn scary - the killing of small business.
The hat switching cracks me up every time

Chico does have a point though, just how is he supposed to find out what he's gotta find out if Harpo don't tell him what he's gotta find out?
Giving someone your leg became a running joke in my family growing up thanks to this sketch
