    Nice one David! Currently being in university myself, I know how busy it gets so don't worry about not uploading frequently; because of how busy I am, my Resignal Preston campaign hasn't really taken off yet but once the summer comes round, I am going to put a lot of work into it and hopefully the plan of the campaign will become reality.     Looking at environment and sustainability in transport is putting the cart before the horse. Transport is the great access service for everything we do. Putting E & S to the forefront is pissing into the wind - you minimise success. Service should be at the forefront, then service enablers like humans to provide/manage services and fixed and moving infrastructure to support service. Access services can be provided in many ways. We generally define services by the suite of technologies built up into a mode - many technologies go into multiple modes. Modes survive long term by having long term comparative advantages for a viable group of customers. Access analysis is about looking at the needs of groups of customers (which likely overlap) and assembling a suite of modes to serve them, and comparing a suite against other possible suites using a range of performance, environmental, economic and social outcomes. Sustainability covers many things - a wishy-washy term. Better to be specific.

      Sustainability and environmental concepts work hand in hand with the needs of people in regards to transport (trains, buses, on-demand ride sharing, microbility) and urban design.

      @@peteregan3862 - I disagree. A national rail network being a 'steel highway' which includes rail infrastructure and rolling stock, is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than roads when the direct and indirect costs to the environment, health and pollution based on the number of passengers carried freight is carried. Example - a 218 seat 4 carriage train set can remove up to 218 non-essential cars off the road. A 20 wagon freight train can remove up 12 44-53 Tonne B-Train Double trucks off the the road.

      @@chrismckellar9350 Rail has a structure for which it is most effective - a grid. The alternative, radial, congests in the middle and has longer journeys than a grid. Grids also work better for roads.
      Many people love the community enterprise it takes to deliver rail services over the more self-serve roads. From a cost and service perspective, road and rail converge towards, but not actually meeting as, managed networks for service and safety reasons. Love rail, but look at the full gamut of access service needs of the whole population to find the market rail can best serve. This also means looking at the capabilities of the technologies that form the various modes. When cannot be confident of rail's future without understanding the access needs of us all.
