  • Yvan Sagnet from Cameroon is battling modern slavery in Italy's agricultural sector. Sagnet once worked as a low-wage farmhand. Now he is fighting for the rights of seasonal farmworkers, taking criminal recruiters, or gangmasters, to court.
Yvan Sagnet calls them slaves: the hundreds of thousands of seasonal farmworkers from Africa and eastern Europe on Italy's fields. Without their labor the country would have no tomato, orange or olive harvest. But the workers are exploited and often forced to live under inhumane conditions in ruins or shanty towns called ghettos. In 2011 Sagnet himself briefly picked tomatoes on the fields near the southern Italian town of Nardò. For four days he labored to fill the 350-kilogram crates. He earned 14 euros a day, ten of which he had to hand over to the gangmaster, or Caporale, for transport and water. Caporale is the term for the criminal recruiters who control and exploit the workers. After a 14-hour day working under the blazing sun and even being beaten, Sagnet took home only four euros. He helped to organize the first strike among the farmhands. It was a success, and since then he has been an activist for the rights of the farmworkers and against the gangmasters. Despite death threats, he has set up an organization called NoCap, a label to certify produce farmed under ethically acceptable conditions. And he has taken his fight against exploitation and slavery to the courts. So far, the Italian justice system has responded slowly. It's a fight that will take a long time to win.

Yvan is risking his life every second going against mafia like this. In Italy there's a dizzyingly long list of people who died while trying to fight the mafia and its abonimations. They knew the consequences it would have bring upon them, but still choose to give their life to this cause. By doing all of this Yvan's not fighting only for migrants, but for Italians and Italy too. We should be immensely grateful and proud of him.

It is the corporate elites that are controlling the farmers. The farmers are stuck in the middle,
The USA lost their small farmers in the 1980's thanks to Globalist Pres. Jimmy Carter. Next was stealing of US taxpayers money for the Bank Bailout in 2008. Corrupt Politicians and Bankers hid this all through their corrupt news media.
The United Nations and the Corporate elites want global anarchy. For the past 70 years we have spent Trillions of dollars to help people (UN organizations) and the only ones lining their pockets is the politicians & corporations.

Maybe or maybe not. In many cases it's much worse in Africa. Travel for an hour or two on unpaved life dangering roads. Also theres no running water in these farms or electricity. And the warlords give them even less than in Italy and if the workers die of heat stroke or get killed in a mines it's simply understood as the risk for making wages. Plus they exploit any workers including paying pennies to children. And poverty drives these workers to work in these conditions because even the little that they make is better than nothing. Whats worse is that in some places in Africa. These workers are exposed to toxic by products either when they're working in the mines extracting minerals or recycling certain metals from electronic products. Not saying what the Caporali is doing is ethical. Just saying it is equally as bad in Africa and in many cases even worse. And this is just understood as unwritten law. Do you think that in Africa you can gather witnesses and take it to the higher court, work with local farmers and vendors to improve the safety and working conditions and get better pay lol are you kidding me? That person and their whole family will get murdered within 24 hours! So the exploitation of human slavery is already occuring in Africa. It's just being adopted in places like Italy from the brains of fellow Africans. If fellow Africans didn't exploit their own people this wouldn't happen. It's really greed that makes them cruel to their fellow man. Greed is what makes fellow Africans exploit their own people for profit and riches. Greed is what makes the Italian farmers agree with the exploitation. But that greed starts at home first in Africa because that's the origin of the exploitation since the beginning of time.

To be fair many Africans are treated the same way in their own countries. Thats why the Caporali are from Africa like the Sudanese that mistreated Ivan. What's worse is they have to travel for an hour or two on unpaved life dangering roads. So Africa isn't any better in many cases, it's worse! There's no running water in these farms or electricity. And the warlords give them even less than in Italy and if the workers die of heat stroke or get killed in a mines it's simply understood as the risk for making wages. Plus they exploit any workers including paying pennies to children. And poverty drives them to work in these conditions because even the little that they make is better than nothing.

I was surprised to see that the family had a sprawling farm, but even more outwardly surprised to see African farmhands working the fields. I believe one of the farmers in the video was saying that they could get certain fruits and vegetables from other African countries for less to be imported to Italy. Beautiful place, food etc This was during the litter collection strike ( mafia related the locals said) so the place despite having breathtaking scenery was filthy af. The heat was unbearable so i cant imagine picking tomatoes in that sun. One thing we noticed were these young african girls in remote areas sitting by the roadsides - very odd ithought. When i came back i googled and found my horrific answer. Thats a whole lot of exploitation not even covered here. Some folks here are calling it bullying ; a relabelling tactic to water things down imo . I now consume ethically..including holiday destinations . Alright, I finished this whole documentary. Thanks again, DW, for bringing to light an issue I- a factory worker and student in Small Town USA- never once considered. For those of you who are surfing the comments section and don't want to watch the full video, here's the heart of the issue: workers' rights. The supermarket industry forces prices down to international levels, and Italians can't compete. Because of that, the Italian farmers hire migrants and pay them very little. Then they cut into the migrants' wages through extortion for things such as transportation (30 people in a small van with no open windows), bedding (10 euros for a rotten mattress), and basic necessities (1.5 euros for a shower)- which results in migrants making next to nothing. And if a migrant worker happens to faint from heat exhaustion, lack of water, or getting beaten by gangsters on the job, then too bad for him. According to the Italian farmers' organization Yvan works with, all of this is a problem which could easily be solved by supermarket chains paying Italian farms 2¢ more for the produce they cultivate.
So again, this is not slavery on paper, but because of the surrounding circumstances in which migrants are subjected to abuse and extortion, it is in practice.

    • @aron8659

and it's still 100x better then the place they came from, it's a difficult job with low pay, but to say it's slavery it's an immoral lie...they can leave any moment they want. Not to mention that migrants complaining about low wages is interesting, given their larger numbers cause wages to go down in a free market economy, if they weren't there, these jobs would be paid more or not exist.

Thank you for this summary. I see this exactly like you and I think this comment section would be way better of to talk and discuss about general working conditions for *all* people working in our countries and criticize companies and missing laws, that allow something like this even happening.
Instead you see how people just blame migrants for working their asses of in the heat of the italian sun so some people can earn a lot of money by seeling their tomatoes for a prize way bellow what the work was actually worth and the goverment just watching over it, because they are no italian citizens...

It's pretty easy to piss on migrants, or to allow exploitation on this level because it means that you pay less at the grocers for your food. In essence, you're enjoying the fruits of exploitation because citizens of most countries would not do this sort of job under the same conditions as a migrant worker. Perhaps paying $15 per tomato would be more to your liking, which would represent the cost of domestic labor and the profit margin necessary to keep these farms afloat. It would also do away with migrant workers, and that seems to bode well with the posters here. In the alternate, you could just shut down all your farms and import from another country. Let Cameroon build farms and sell tomatoes to Italy.

It has been going on for a long time with close to no end in sight due to the state's unwillingness to solve the issues at hand. The system we have in place thrives off workers' exploitation, since the goal is the accumulation of capital, and not setting standards of living for all of us.
If abusing precarious individuals results in higher profits, in a system where that is the only goal, while assuring proper salaries and living standards results in a significant loss in profits, these horrible behaviors will sadly remain unchanged.

    - Why do people go to Italy to live and work under these conditions when they could build up an agricultural industry in their own countries?
    - Why are other Africans helping to exploit these workers?
    - Why don't they keep their living quarters more clean? That would make things at least a little bit more bearable.

I feel the fire within me to complain about the African leaders and may be also work with other's to see that we change the situations. But it is too bad to the extent that the moment you opose what is going on you are searching for your own death. It is quite sad . Being a Ugandan i have seen my fellow youth standing up for better idea s and their lives have been taken away. It is quite sad. People standing against all that are killed in broad Daylight. If only we were brave enough to stop all this nuisance. We would be better.

You are amazing Brother. May the blood of Jesus cover you. May you not die due to man's will. May the good Lord grant you long life for you and your family until you see generations and generations of your grandchildren

As an Italian, not even supporting the right, all I can say is that this is a product of globalisation, neoliberalism, immigration policy and geopolitical. What once upon a time was called "slavery" is now called "we've got to save the life of these persons and take them here from Africa to assure them a better life". On another hand farmers have to compete with lower and lower costs to sell their products or they can't enter in the Large Scale Retail Distribution managed by huge multinational companies. Without considering that western countries (USA first) go destabilising countries for their business and produce the immigration with the consequences we all see.

Spain and Italy treat the immigrants the same way in the fields. In Spain there are even ghettos of farm workers

Isn't it amazing how God orchestrates? He thought he was in Italy to earn a degree but his purpose there was far greater!

Yvan is a good fighter but I think he'd be better off fighting the Cameroonian government over their plundering of public funds which is the main reason people are setting off on such miserable journeys through the death sea called the Mediterranean to end up being enslaved in Italy or anywhere else in the world. Fighting for the wellbeing of our people is always better at home

Kudos to you. I think we are raging wars against the wrong people. If only we could put all the anger that we are directing towards Europe onto the injustices in our countries we would be far much better. I only wish I had the courage. But where i come from human rights is a joke. You speak about injustices you are shot to death in broad daylight

As much as I sympathise with that man, it was his choice to move there. There is injustice everywhere

a choice with the hope for a better future, not being treated poorly, besides that these people dont have much of a choice as they dont have the same priviliges as others. With my dutch pp I have much higher chance of getting a well paid job.
