Zac is like a comedy assassin. He's quiet, he's not particularly flashy, but when he strikes he's freaking deadly lol
He's such a good comedic straight man. Honestly, his style really reminds me of the comedian Bob Newheart sometimes.
His performance as the brain slug infecting a pilot in A Starstruck Odyssey was incredible. He started with single guttural syllables and eventually graduated to “Give me that” in like episode 6
he's great at just being a straight man to Brennan's insanity.
I wish I found him funny. He's never made me laugh. I wish I could enjoy his comedy but it just falls flat for me.
@@wildoranges well comedy is subject, you might find something funny that I won't and that's alright. Personally I find him quite funny and that's ok, you don't half to there's plenty to love and laugh at in this show so I hope you find some fun in it!

Senile old man and the one remaining Grandson reluctantly taking care of him is not the dynamic I was expecting but I love it.

The Brennan/Zac comedy dynamic never ceases to hit: Brennan is willing to say or do anything to follow a genre or tone, but Zac just casually reminds us all that we are still in a society.
Brennan takes us on an insane, fantastical adventure to a time and place we’ve never been! -then Zac reminds us that we could still like, die, or something 😂

His improv style is always so understated, subtle, and terse and that makes it funnier. He just needs 1 to 3 deadpan words between someone's elocution. I could write an essay about his improv, but that would be weird.

He pairs well with anyone, which is a great talent to have in any kind of performance art (which is really what these public D&D sessions are). He can just as easily be as crazy as Brennan's character and get a laugh, but he knows when to be the straight man and can still get a laugh.

Exactly what one of my theater teachers told us once. One of the most important for bland lines to be comedic is timing and tone

Man Zac is great. He easily could’ve acted concerned as Colin but instead he just has this calm “you know we’ve got things to do” energy that’s so good as Raphael is unraveling into Gollum.

I think the biggest break from Brennan was because Zac undermined his expected tropes. Zac normally has a minimalist approach to comedy, which is already the opposite of Brennan with monologues and give-and-take improve. But when Zac said “so.. you want to stay here, right?” It’s going against the D&D premise of the party needing to be together, and against improve’s famous “yes and” agreeing/accepting what the other person is saying and adding to it.
Hey! Just wanna point out this doesn't actually break the yes and principle. The yes and principle is mostly just about not sandbagging the scene from progressing. Even though Zac isn't following Brennan's energy, he's still following up his prompts in a way that furthers the scene. And having two characters with mismatched energy is classic comedy!
The silent sleeper agents of comedy: “no, and” and “no, but”
Barry responding “right on” to Skip entering the room gesturing to his body and shrugging walked so “we need you to lock it in a little bit” could run

Zac Oyama is the master of understatement. Brennan makes jokes out of large bombastic statements, but only Zac can make comedy by simply saying ". . . yeah".
Zac “I killed that guy, yeah.” Oyama. The guy is a master of one-liners.
Zac's comedy is so unique. It's like a fantastic mix between playing the straight man and complete absurdity.
I see Brennan's "Hitting on Zac in every D20 season" streak is still going strong.

Brennan has a mastery of comedy that is well-honed, trained over a long lifetime of roleplay and improv. Zac, on the other hand, has a comedic gift from the hand of god himself that seems to come oh so naturally with little to no effort. Brennan crafts masterpieces, lexical tapestries in which each singular word represents both a fraction and a whole of comedic genius. Zac simply opens his mouth and spills forth little miracles of humor, each with the divine power to bust your entire gut in inexplicably perfect ways.
Two equally funny dudes with TOTALLY different vibes, who work so fucking well together lmao
(In all seriousness I'm sure Zac is also a professionally trained improv comedian and puts a lot of effort into his humor, he's just got a more minimalistic vibe to his comedy that contrasts Brennan insane ability to just string incredible words together like a comedic freestyle poet)

I love how Anjali over the course of this minicampaign became the honorary president of Zac Oyama Fanclub. Her reactions to him, frequently just falling into the frame laughing when the camera's at Zac, are priceless. ❤
I love Colin’s entire arc with Riphaneal is basically “Just watch over Grandpa and make sure he doesn’t hurt himself.”

I think Zac's "What?" at 1:12 is honestly the best part. It feels SO real, the perfect mix of annoyance and confusion.
Zac is just a naturally funny dude, but also has talent for improv with a scene like imagining he's holding and interacting with objects. For all the times Brennan's messed with his characters, Zac's way of interacting with Brennan's was to always just assume they were way too much for him and just be like "bro, chill" lol

I keep saying this, Colin Provolone is the closest a Zac Oyama character has ever come to just being Zac Oyama.
It's genuinely impressive how, in just a few short hours, each episode can make you bust out laughing in one moment and then almost perfectly transition to the most serious, heart wrenching war drama you have ever seen, and do so without losing its viewers or even making it seem completely tone breaking.
These players and the writers of this world have my full respect, i love them so much

I feel like the type of comedy people have gotten used to through mainstream film and tv is the “hey this is clearly a joke and should be funny haha” and “look at this hyperbole, and funny movements, it’s funny right?” But there is nothing better than the comedy of the character/actor being an ordinary person going through a comical situation (situational comedy). As Bryan Cranston said “if the character realises something is funny, it takes the onus off the audience to laugh”, there’s almost more comedy in the audience subconsciously thinking of the absurdity of the scene when there is a calm and reasonable person trying to manage the chaotic and comedic nature of what they are witnessing/experiencing. Like a person who is good at their job trying to maintain sanity while working with someone who has no idea what the hell they are doing.
Sorry for the long description, I’m a Media teacher and I’m very passionate about depictions of comedy, especially as a short film I made is that exact type of comedy 😂

“if the character realises something is funny, it takes the onus off the audience to laugh” reminds me of "Dr Strangelove" and how it carries it's comedy completely in the absurdity evident to the viewer because the movie internally takes itself very seriously.

I think this pretty much explains why I don't like what's most commonly thought of as "funny". I don't like stuff that "tells" me to laugh. I like things that the more I think about it the more funny it gets, or something that goes over the brink of "okay?" to actually causing laughter once the right context is in place.
Even in "Make Some Noise" Zac is just the one hit KO on his delivery.

Rafaniel and Colin was the pairing I didn't know I needed until it happened. This little radish( was he a radish or an onion) man was just becoming more and more unhinged, and Colin could not care less.

I love Zac and he's funny. I mean everyone else is laughing, but I think Brennan just loves Zac. We already know that, but oh my, is he getting deeper and deeper.

You know, I feel bad that Raphaniel has pretty much deteriorated to this point.

A big credit to Matt for being so consistent in his language for a setting he didn’t make. He killed it as dm this season. I’m admittedly not huge on critical role, I prefer dimension 20’s more focussed approach to storytelling. But Matt really shines here in that format
