Dale Ellis (53pts) vs. Bucks (1989, 5OTs)

- The game in which Dale Ellis set the NBA record for most minutes played in a single game with 69. Ellis's name and performance is the one which other players mostly recall when talking about this game. Yet him being the pure scorer he was, you'll read how Ellis himself remembers actually not being all that efficient (18/39 FG).
That might be somewhat true up to a point, but you also have to acknowledge how truly exhausting it is for a player to clock enough minutes for it to count as two games and still put up all those shots (he also got to the line for 17 free throws). Ellis had 33 after the first four quarters expired and then proceeded to light it up. I think we''ll go ahead and commend him for that. After the Supersonics were down 9 in the fifth overtime, Seattle almost forced a sixth one thanks to a Dale Ellis steal. Ultimately, it wasn't meant to be... November 9, 1989.
Disclaimer - eight of Ellis's 53 points are missing from this video since my version of the game doesn't have the full 73 minutes.

+LamarMatic It's sad what happened to Dale Ellis later that season, since his car accident basically cost Seattle a playoff appearance in the '89-'90 NBA Playoffs. That Seattle team included a young teenager named Shawn Kemp who had to be the backup PF/C behind Xavier McDaniel and Michael Cage since being thrust into the starting lineup would've ruined Kemp's NBA career before it even got started, and that allowed Seattle to be in a position to draft Gary Payton in 1990.
It took a few seasons until Kemp was ready to handle full-time starting PF duties by '92-'93, coincidentally happening at the same time Seattle became serious playoff contenders under George Karl's guidance. And although Payton was a ready-made NBA starter from the get-go, he would not be elevated to All-Star status until George Karl's hiring.
I still wish Dale Ellis would've stayed with Seattle for the rest of his NBA career though, just so he could stick around in his prime for Payton/Kemp. But after '89-'90, he wasn't the same 20-27 ppg scorer nor was he allowed to play like one for the rest of his career. Why was it maddeningly disheartening to see Dale Ellis reduced to a sub-20 PPG scorer in the 1990s?
One of the best shooters of all time; underrated. Very good scorer at his best, too.
Exactly. Now THIS guy is truly underrated, overlooked since his retirement. Not a superstar, but certainly someone you could never rest on. Or else!
One of the most underrated shooters in the nba’s history.
Who's here because of Reggie's top 5 shooters of all time?
As a kid I remember Dale Ellis being a straight bucket-getter!!
It always amazes me how such an incredible star has been left behind and never got the respect he deserves. I guess ellis was very modest guy and never looked for spotlights despite he've been one of the most talanted and dangerous players of the late 80'. He was dream team material for sure back then and I'm so sorry for him. Personally, I love him very much. Fatal yet noble.
It’s because his window was pretty short. Kinda like Jerry Stackhouse and Antonio McDyess, they were both great players for a couple years but you gotta be good for some time to have that impact.
Dale Ellis was good and durable as a role player but really only had 3 1/2 “quality” years and the rest he was just a really good role player
fantastic shooter
Whenever I hear the greatest shooter ever debate, I wonder why Dale Ellis' name is rarely brought up.
He is definitely one of the top three shooters that come into my mind as a kid growing up and watching him shoot so smoothly from 2-point jump shots to threes.
So many pundits and writers want to appeal to the current generation and say Steph is "the greatest shooter the God has ever created" like Stephen A. says, and also put Dame and Klay into the mix - and I love all three of them. Let the kids know that there was a guy named Dale Ellis who was a pure scorer with a smooth jump shot, and probably could give any shooters a run if put against one another.
Whos here after Jokíc's 65 min game?
I am. I was curious after a report said Dale Ellis played for 69 min in a 4 OT game. I scratched my head for a moment as someone on air mentioned 4 OTs as well. The math didn't sound right until it was 5 OTs. Jokic's an amazing big man. Hopefully the big man recovers. 65 minutes is insane.
Very nice midrange shooter
Underrated scorer but I didn't know he could light it up like this.
God Bless Dale Ellis
Not much antics after making a shot : NBA's lost act
SWISH👏
Michael Cages Hair is the all time greatest.
Top NBA player during his time in Seattle, could have played couple of times in All-Stars game,he only played once.
Ironically he became a Buck later in his career
2 years later

Man, I miss this style of basketball.
Wonder if people were like, alright I’m out after the first few ots lol
Dale Ellis is my cousin
Christian Ellis he’s a player that’s very underrated in nba history.
I've always liked Dale Ellis' game. I remembered him playing at UT.
Better than Curry
Boi stop ✋🏿
You're a special kind of delusional
If he played today it is possible. As it stands, no.
About the same as Dell Curry
@@fuckthechinesevirus9462 i'd take ellis over dell
Olden Polynice!
53 points don’t seem so impressive in a 5 OT game
Wu Liwei Fifty points is fifty points, nitwit.
Who the fuck normally scores more points than minutes played on a regular basis?
@Die Noob I wouldn't call it garbage, but it's not overly impressive. Playing 69 minutes in an NBA game is insane, though; that's as many minutes as most starters would play in two games. He still shot 46% that game, and his legs were probably done by the end of the game.
Regardless. he had plenty of big games over the years.
I give more props to playing 69 minutes out of 73 minutes of basketball. And again, 50 plus points is still 50 + points. After all of that up and down running which included regulation and 5 overtimes, shooting a basketball feels like throwing up a medicine ball. I'm certain his teammates appreciated him doing all of that scoring in OT.
