  • Pet chinchillas - how much do they cost!? I break it down for you!
    Hey guys, it's Em!
    So many of you have been asking how much it would cost to buy a pet Chinchilla, so I'm here to give you a realistic idea of how much it can cost to buy a pair of chinchillas.
    We'll cover the actual cost of a pair of chinchillas, everything you will need to set them up at home, and some essentials which you may not have even thought about!
    *DISCLAIMER*
    Chinchillas are happiest when kept in a pair. I recommend bonded, same-sex pairs, such as two males, or two females.
    If you have done your research and you feel chinchillas would be a good fit for your family, please consider adopting, rather than buying!

    I’m going to start off by saying, instead of spending $150 of one from petsmart, you could adopt one in need for a home for about $50 or less, it could possibly be already spayed or nurtured, so youve already save yourself $600. Just saying 🤷‍♀️

    Hey, i have two (two year old) chinchillas, they are amazing pets and i love them so much but i just wanted to add a couple more things :)
    - Mine are very picky, (this may not apply to all chinchillas but I'm speaking from experience.) i have spent quiet a lot of money over the two years on probably 5 bath houses for them (£6-£12) only for them to refuse to use them or not fit into them once they got bigger. I also started them on the cheaper food the person i got them off gave me and due to it being out of stock bought the one that was twice the price and now that's the only one they will eat.
    - Be careful with cages, they are incredibly clever and will figure out how to unlock some door locks, i bought a cage for £200 which i have to padlock closed as they can use there powerful back legs to kick open.
    - They chew anything they can, i have had to buy a large roll of cardboard so that they don't chew the skirting board and the wooden cabinets that are in the room i get them out in.
    Just a quick side note as well not all chinchillas are as cuddly and calm as Olaf. One of mine is loving and friendly and you can hold her and she will sit on my shoulders but the other one will only allow you to touch her when she wants you too and even then its is rare.
    Hope this helps someone :)

    When I had my Chinchilla, the dust and bedding were by far the most expensive ongoing costs, because they both needed replaced regularly and weren't that cheap to begin with.

    • @kapuraftw
      @kapuraftw 7 років тому +4

      Emzotic in my experience, its because they are including a physical with the cost. my local vet had vouchers that brings a spay or neuter down to 30$ USD per animal, but thats because the rest is offset by donations to make sure those with animals are at least getting the bare minimum (spay/neuter/rabies/etc). for a new pet owner that is paying out of pocket, they will have their first visit be a full physical...and thats where they really get you for your money. my most recent bill was for 300$ for two cats to get two shots and a physical. i know the shots were only about 1/3rd of the cost, his time was the majority. but, thats only my experience in my US town as a patron. hopefully someone else who works in the industry will clarify....because 500 is quite a steep price.

    • @katk7505
      @katk7505 6 років тому

      Spaying and neutering is much more pricey for exotic pets in the US. cats and dogs are relatively cheap (sometimes free) but the surgery is more difficult and more risky with smaller pets because theyre often more sensitive to being put under anesthesia.

    Getting your pet "nootered" ( 😅) is not the only time you are going to have to see the vet. Animals can get ill, they can get injured. They have to get vaccinated every year. You have to take those costs into consideration as well. I got my cat from the rescue and I paid 50€ in donations which seems pretty inexpensive. But a few weeks later he broke a vase, stepped into the broken glass and I had to rush to the vet. He recovered, fortunately, but that cost me 300€ ... when you get a pet you commit to caring for it in good times and bad times. Animals are neither Birthday gifts nor Christmas gifts or whatever. They become family and they have to be treated as such until they one day have to cross the rainbow bridge!
    And Em, I am happy to have found your channel! It's amazing to see how passionate you are. Please keep up the good work! People's attitude towards animals needs to change and the only way to do that is to educate, educate, educate. Thank you ))

    Kaytee isn't really a good brand, and paper bedding isn't recommended for chinchillas because it can cause blockages. Also, with the Critter Nation cage, you would want to make anti-pill fleece covers as well as ramp covers because plastic isn't good for chinchillas to be chewing on. They would also need chinchillers because they need to be kept at a cooler temperature. I'd recommend getting Oxbow essentials or mazuri chinchilla food. Chinchillas also need a wheel, and the best wheels out there in my opinion are the ChinSpin and the metal flying saucer wheels, and the good wheels usually cost around $ 50-100. You also forgot about the food bowl. I'd also recommend Oxbow Timothy hay. Chinchillas shouldn't be fed fruits, nuts, seeds, or things with sugar in them. For treats I personally give my chinchilla rose hips and regular cheerios. I've been doing research on chinchillas and their proper care for around 6 years, as well as on other small animals.

    Don’t use Kaytee. They have mould in the food and the food has killed tons of rats, mice, hamsters and chinchillas. Please be careful when selecting brands.
    Thanks and have an amazing day 💗😉😘

    A couple of ways to cut back on the "Ongoing cost" of certain items:
    1. FOOD: There is a type of rabbit food that has been deemed by the community to be safe and healthy for chinchillas: Manna Pro SHO. This food can be bought in bulk at most farm and feed stores in the USA, and one bag for one or two chinchillas can last the better part of a year. Couple that with good quality hay CUBES (still contain long-strand hay for healthy digestion) and you run about 40 dollars per year in food. Because it is a bulk food, though, it is important to keep the pellets in an airtight container in a cool, dry place in order to preserve freshness.
    2. BEDDING: If your chinchilla is not a chewer, a good option for reusable bedding is fleece. Fleece pads can be plenty absorbent to wick away pee, and with some careful folding can also be a quick cleanup for the mountain of poops chins make. Just make sure to never wash fleece with dryer sheets, or it removes the wicking property.

    You should do an update! I love your videos ❤️. But after having chins for a long time, I realized quite a few things! For my chins, I spent around $2,000 within the first year. The years after got cheaper and cheaper. They need liners for the ferret nation (which was also a plus you had in your video!), which is made out of anti-pill fleece. This is because they can’t digest plastic, and it could easily kill them! You can sew them for cheap, but since I don’t have a sewing machine, I just spend $120 on the hammocks and the liners! Kaytee is also a horrible brand, but Oxbow Essentials is amazing! And the water bottle should go outside of the cage, since they’ll eat the plastic right up! They also LOVE to jump, so a lot of ledges are needed! The bedding is also horrible for them. Mine are litter box trained with aspen wood chip bedding! They will eat the paper bedding and it can also kill them! (Their ladders should also be lined with fleece because they’re known for breaking their legs on the ladders). Only kiln dried pine is best for chewing (and lava ledges). Chew toys are best as the lava rocks and the wood though, so you were covering a large percentage of it! Absolutely no hate! You can’t be a professional about every animal, so many animals have different needs! So basically absolutely no plastic within their reach and only kiln dried wood or ceramic/glass (and lava ledges/rocks)! But all the love, I absolutely admire you!

    I live in mid-America and I have three Chinchillas. Your start up cost are spot on. I have that exact cage. I spend about $100.00 a month to maintain my happy baby’s. That gives them a variety of thing to chew and also the dust baths and bedding. Their wellness vet visits are not included in that monthly cost. When I take a holiday I have to have a house sitter for them cuz I don’t want to trust any other enclosures.... Love your channel and watching all your videos. ❤️

    Hi! I use the exact same type of bedding that you used for the price in your video for my snake. I have to say that it has lasted me for about three years and there's still a 1/3 of the bag left. That being said, I do use a decent amount of bedding every time because my snake loves to burrow so I would highly recommend this type of bedding for a chinchilla.

    • @animals4life404
      @animals4life404 3 роки тому

      I don't personally own any snakes, but I wouldn't use rodent bedding on snakes, just in my opinion, and I don't recommend paper bedding for chinchillas, I have a chinchilla, and some might try to eat the bedding (like if they are stressed out or live in bad conditions at the time or prior to getting it) and in general they don't really burrow (some might but its not very common) I highly recommend using fleece as bedding and you can wash it and reuse it. Paper bedding can work great for some chinchillas, but its better for hamster, gerbils, and other small animals that love to burrow.

    I got my 3 chinchillas off of KSL from previous owners and all together they probably cost $250
    which included chinchilla dust, two cages, a bag of bedding, bag of Timothy hay, dust bath bin, and some toys
    (it's a lot easier to cut down the cost if you get them off of Craigslist or another website. though, they're probably going to be older and you dont know exactly where they've come from or what they've been exposed to, so be careful)
    continuous costs include bags of food and Timothy hay which I buy monthly. i used to buy new toys for them every few weeks but now I make my own. but again you need to be careful because chinchillas can't process everything and some wood is actually very bad for them to ingest.
    dust is also a reoccurring cost but I probably only have to buy a big thing every 3 months.
    also, I wouldn't get a chinchilla unless you know you can afford a big cage right away, the one i have was around $80 but isn't as big as i would like to get them in the future. dont get me wrong, it fits them nicely, I would just like them to have a bit more room to play and run around because I'm the type of person to pamper my animals.
    Okay hope that helps someone at least if they're looking for other ways to get around costs. dont forget to make sure they're legal where you live too, so incase of an emergency you can go to the vet.
    another side note, I wouldn't keep the opposite sexes in the same cage, males in one and females in the other.

    You're both beautiful creatures!
    As domesticated chinchillas have been bred from two different subspecies, they often maloclude due to their differing upper / lower jaw shapes depending on what the individual has inherited. Not to mention that their tooth roots can grow and also become exceptionally painful!
    In the UK most insurance companies don't insure for chinchillas due to their dental problems- or, if they do provide insurance, dental issues aren't covered. Not sure how it works in the US.

    I have 2 8 year old chinchillas who I rescued over the summer with all of their things for free, the thing I wasn’t expecting was that I’d pay for a lot more energy every month. They need to stay at low temperature, under 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I live in an area that is often over 100 in the summer, so while I’m at work I need to have the ac on all day. I feel it is worth it because I do love my chinchillas however I didn’t think about it before getting them! Thank you for this video though, it’s good to be informed of cost before buying an new family member!

    • @colinjava8447
      @colinjava8447 7 років тому +2

      That's a lot more variable, if you were to take a bunch of different snakes and plot of graph of snake size against cost, you would see a positive correlation.
      The larger the snake you get (really talking about pythons and boas here), the larger the enclosure, and larger food items you will need to give it.
      I spend about £35 a year on frozen rats for my 4 foot royal(ball) python.
      The vivarium and accessories doesn't add up to that much, maybe £200 depending.
      You can always build your own vivarium too for cheap.
      I use a carpet for the snake, its absorbent and easy to clean with a hose, I think this is more comfortable for snake than bark chippings or something.
      Your heating will depend on the snake, you will want a thermostat too (or dimmerstat for light based heating).
      Other accessories like hide/thermometer/waterbowl dont cost that much.
      But it all depends on the snake you get ultimately, some may have more complex needs.
      But typically since they don't eat so often, they are cheap to feed, unless you have a 20 foot snake.
