THIS VIDEO WAS EVERYTHING! As a woman with ALOPECIA hearing the history & sentiment behind this video made me so happy & a very out loud proud WIG WEARER! Thank You Jaymes 🙏🏼💖🙏🏼💖
Those Egyptian wigs are glorious! The one held by the British Museum that came from the Temple of Isis in Thebes is amazing. It has over 400 strand of hair, about three hundred are braids and the other hundred the set curls on top. It is made with a near-ventilating technique that has the hair tied in place through the use of beeswax and a twisted strand wrapped around the base of the loop that is beeswaxed in place. Human body temperature won't melt beeswax, so it serve like got2be almost, gluing that stand in place to the base it is tied into. Amazing!!!
Loved every minute of this and would definitely be interested in more like it 🥰🥰🥰 Strange to think that wigs existed for so long, before the idea of shame was brought into it.. Thankfully things are changing (The stigma of wearing a toupee is still there, though)
Loved this. My mom used to manage a wig salon in Rockford IL when I was little. I remember going there and being scared to death of the back room where they made/repaired wigs. There were all these heads back there! ;-)
I loved wearing wigs when I was little cuz I thought it was so fun having different hair. They were just cheap Halloween wigs. Now that I'm older and wigs are a big thing again, I've bought some better quality ones and I've figured out how to make them look fairly natural when I wear them. Wigs are a magical thing.
Jaymes, I just want you to know I was introduced to you on Jack’s “The Doll’s Witness” UA-cam channel during your birthday episode. I then followed your channel, watched your drag race seasons, which also led me to check into Trixie Mattel’s stuff. Your chatter while styling wigs is interesting and informative. You seem like a really cool and intelligent person. I appreciate you!
I remember a makeup artist talking about why she likes to wear wigs from time to time, and she really like to change up her look without having to do something permanent. Sometimes she'd wear her natural hair, but other times she'd create her look around one of her wigs. I found that really refreshing and such a great way to easily change your look without having to wait a few months before doing so again. Also, shout-out to the cosplay community! Some of their wigs are just as big and grand as drag wigs!
GG!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! The 1960s and the 1970s were ABSOLUTELY THE BEST TIME FOR HAIRSTYLES!!!!!!!!!! Vidal Sassoon and Trevor sorbie did AMAZING THINGS in the advancement of precision and geometric hairstyles!!!!!!!!!! And, THANK YOU for the vanilla blonde hair and red lips!!!!!!!!!!
I agree. It is so funny how there has been a need and business for wigs, but in my lifetime, there has always been... I guess... such a stigma against them in the past until recent years today. Thank for this.
I love watching your wig videos, mostly for you talking about stuff! The wig styling part is also cool (it adds to the ASMR effect), but I like listening to you talk about Hollywood/beauty/wig history the most. ❤
I saw an interview with Carol Daly, the only female detective to work the East Area Rapist case in Sacramento in the mid-70s, where she said that at the height of his crimes, she had to buy a wig because she never knew what time of the day or night she would be called on to take statements from the victims and talk to the media, and it was just easier. She is amazing.
I had to pause the video on all the old ads and read them, GREAT video, learned a lot; as a wig wearer myself, really appreciate this one! Wig wearing for me is an art form. Much love from New Mexico USA!🥰🥰🥰
My mom had leukemia in 1998. After vigorous chemo and radiation she lost her hair and when it grew back it was thin baby hair. (I know most people's hair goes back to normal and probably had less chemo and radiation, but she's been in remission since so can't really knock the results) In the last few years she's started wearing more and more wigs and honestly bringing her back to how she felt before she lost her hair. It's also nice to see people who knew her before reactions to seeing her have hair again.
I love how through Jaymes is. Mother is in her element. Sharing knowledge, showing the illustrious history, good and bad, of how far wigs have come. Fascinating. Love the outfit and wig changes.💕🩷💕🩷 Let's celebrate the wig!!
this was the deal pickle ! I knew about most of this but you explained the more detailed pieces to the puzzle..new follower here in vegas & on your fb...
My great-aunt had a fabulous bubble cut wig. Jet black, even when she was 70. I think her nurse took it, because it wasn’t there when we went to clean out her apartment. I was bummed. I should’ve kept her Spanish wicker furniture too.
Wigs are a great way to switch up your look / try new styles and colors without commitment or damage. Anyone who can't vibe with that is not allowed to sit next to me @ the lunch table 😉
Always love your videos & enjoyed your take on wig history. Great work. I might dispute Queen Elizabeth 1 using wigs to disguise bad health - besides a case of smallpox as a minor that left facials scars, she was one of the more spritely Tudors fitness wise. She may not have had the most lustrous of hair certainly, and used wigs to upmph that shizz up but she lived up to 69 - not having kids helped. Most likely died of blood poisoning.
Early 1700's mens wigs make me think of 80's perms, womens wigs were shorter and more understated. Once women started to wear their hair longer and bigger, men made theirs into the smaller powdered wigs. Also alot of the wigs would be passed down imagine wearing your dads wig after he died 😶
Wow I'm pretty surprised that for the modern era Lady Gaga's name was never mentioned 😑 👎🏻 also... why don't you just clip the microphone on instead of holding it??

As a HUGE history nerd, I can’t appreciate this video enough
Thank you Professor Mansfield!

I whole heartedly agree
And you don't HAVE to go to a wig store anymore, either! Jaymes taught me about finding wigs online, and it changed my LIFE!
I want to learn history from James only. History of lipsticks, history of eyebrows, history of whatever I don't care

Jaymes, you were BORN to educate. I love learning facts from you, on any old subject.
Actually when you said that wigs fell out of fashion after the 60s etc....not for black people
She is a domestic goddess and a wig historian I loved this
New drinking game! Take a shot, every time Jaymes says, "prominent"! lololol
Bottoms up!
I liked the video just for your wig ALONE! Barbie is peanut butter and jealous!
Always love your videos & enjoyed your take on wig history. Great work.

From the beginning of time historians have been asking “Why Wig”?
How much longer we gonna have to wait for an Iconic Blondes of 'Berta?
A history of wigs :O
Lmao, this video gives “when you’re doing a paper and need to reach the word count” 💀.
Ask Kylie Jenner and she’d say she’s single handedly the reason why wigs are popular 😂
Oh oops you mentioned it in the video 😂
Two steps ahead 🤣
Why is Mother holding a feminine hygiene product?
Early 1700's mens wigs make me think of 80's perms, womens wigs were shorter and more understated. Once women started to wear their hair longer and bigger, men made theirs into the smaller powdered wigs. Also alot of the wigs would be passed down imagine wearing your dads wig after he died 😶
I wonder if the wig makers back in the day were gay men. "Oh honey, that updo for the inconoration? Oh honey"
Which king Louis? There were 16 of them
😊
Wow I'm pretty surprised that for the modern era Lady Gaga's name was never mentioned 😑 👎🏻
also... why don't you just clip the microphone on instead of holding it??
You wear wigss???? I thought that was your real hair! The lies! 😂
