    For some bizarre, but funny reason, this came to my mind:
    Has anyone ever seriously thought about the character, "semi-colon" since "semi" means half, or 50%? _Seriously._ *Why* is it called a "semi-colon" ["half-colon"] anyway? The bottom 'comma' portion clearly uses more space than the the upper, 'colon' [plus SPACE] part therefore *it's MORE than just 'semi' [half]* ? Shouldn't it be more accurate to call it a "comma plus dot," or, a "dotted comma" like we say, "dotted 'i'?"

    Thank you for your well articulated videos. I'm struggling with the following sentence: 'In the class that I present, I am often asked this question, "What are the details?"' Should this be '...that I present; I am often asked...'

    • @shaunmacleod2371
      @shaunmacleod2371 9 років тому

      derek hendrikz No, you can't use a semicolon there because "In the class that I present" is not an independent clause. It is a phrase (in the class) and a relative clause (that I present), and alone would be incomplete. It is dependent on "I am often asked ..." in order to be complete. So the comma is correct.

    Could I use a semiclon before the "and" in the last item of complicated lists?

  • @coreyphelps248
    @coreyphelps248 9 років тому +4

    I have a question regarding the "complicated list" portion of the video.
    Why are you not using a comma or semi-colon to connect the last two items in the list?
    Ex: Vancouver, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta and Montreal Quebec.
    Vancouver, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta, and Montreal Quebec.
    Vancouver, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; Calgary Alberta; and Montreal Quebec.
    I always thought if a list contained three or more items you had to use a comma.
    Ex: I bought eggs, bread, milk, coffee, and cereal.
    I bought eggs, bread, milk, coffee, and cereal.
    Does this rule change when using semicolons and complicated list?
    Ex: I bought eggs, for the cake; bread, for sandwiches; milk, for the milkshakes; yogurt, for the chicken; and olives, for the pizza.

    • @smrtenglish
      @smrtenglish  8 років тому +1

      +Corey Phelps That is called an Oxford Comma. The Oxford Comma is an optional comma before "and" at the end of the list. It is optional and not mandatory.

    • @rd57f
      @rd57f 8 років тому +1

      +Smrt English That's right. It's optional! And by the way, in other languages, like Spanish, that comma is not used at all. I guess, in general, it depends on your personal preferences.

    What about the oxford semicolon on those complicated lists of items?

  • @edwardmclaughlin7935
    @edwardmclaughlin7935 4 роки тому

    In the 'complicated list', I feel the need to use a final semi-colon prior to the 'and' that precedes the last item of the list. Would this be an Oxford semi-colon? :-)

    Thanks; however I'm certainly not new to English, but over the years I've made my English ''parallel wording'', it is compared to art, while this language is consequently conceit wording utilized by people that attempt to communicate it; yet English could be extraordinarily multiplex, or have a simplification; Therefore you need to grasp the idea of how English actually works, an make it your own, or you won't get the point.
